  • Saxifraga cortusifolia Siebold & Zucc. (Saxifragaceae, sect. Irregulares, ser. Rufescentes), a species considered endemic along mountain streams throughout Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan, was discovered as a wild population in the Cheona Valley in Haean-dong, Jeju-si on Jeju-do Island of Korea. The population consisted of three subpopulations occupying narrow areas 10 × 10 m2, 5 × 5 m2, and 10 × 5 m2 in size. The number of individuals in the three subpopulations was confirmed to exceed 100. Most of the individuals were on or below rocks at the edge of the valley. A morphological description, detailed photos, and a key to related taxa in Korea are presented.

  • A new Saxifraga fortunei cultivar 'Whitegreen' was bred by crossing between 'Daewoojoo' with Pale Green (Y-G145-C) colored petals and 'Kwanglim' with light Yellow green (Y-G145A) colored petals. The selection and flower characterization were conducted from 2004 to 2008 in greenhouse of Highland Agriculture Research Center, NICS, RDA. Flowering in 'Whitegreen' Showed from September 20 th for 33 days. The number of petals were 11.4 ea., with a width of 1.4 cm and length of 1.4 cm. The plant height was 20.7 cm, and number of leaves per plant was 48.3 ea., with a width of 3.4 cm and length of 3.0 cm. 'Whitegreen' cultivar can be used as a pot flower. 'Whitegreen' plants grown under 50% shade of sunlight have higher degree of acclimation compared to those under direct sunlight. And soft rot disease would occur usually by over-irrigation. 'Whitegreen' cultivar was registered as a novel variety with No. 3456 in Korea seed and variety service on April 2011.

  • A new Saxifraga fortunei 'Pinkle' was bred by crossing 'Juno' with 'Hongoan', both with light pink (RP-N66A)-colored petals. The selection of promising lines and characterization of flowers were conducted from 2004 to 2008 year in greenhouses of the Highland Agriculture Research Center, NICS, RDA. The flowering of 'Pinkle' starts on October 7 and lasted for 27 days. The number of flowers per plant is 99.7 with many flowering habits. The flower show mixed dark pink (R-P N66C) colors at opening. The flower have 5.0 petals, each have the size is 2.9 cm in width and 3.2 cm in length. Mean plant height is 15.8 cm and number of leaves are 44.3 ea. 'Pinkle' can be used as a pot flower. Fifty percent shading of the sunlight is recommended and soft rot disease occurs caused by over-irrigation. 'Pinkle' was registered as a new cultivar in Korea Seed and Variety Service in April 2011.

  • This study was conducted to develop in vitro propagation techniques of new cultivar, 'Greenstar', bred by Highland Agriculture Research Center. The multiple shoot induction and plant growth of in vitro plant were analyzed by MS media concentration (1/2 MS, 1 MS and 2 MS medium), plant growth regulators and its proper concentration; CPPU [Forchlorfenuron(N-(2-chloro-4-pridyl)-3-phenylurea) (0, 0.5, 1.0 and $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), thidiazuron [(TDZ), (0.01, 0.1, 0.5 and $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), zeatin (0, 0.5, 1.0 and $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and BA [6-benzylaminiopurine(BA), (0, 0.5, 1.0 and $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$)] in MS (3% sugar and 0.8% agar with pH 5.7) media. The highest number of induced shoots, leaves and roots were shown in 1/2 MS medium concentration. On the 1/2 MS medium, shoot numbers, shoot length, leaf numbers and root numbers were 11.0, 1.9 cm, 24.7, and 8.0, respectively. On the absence of CPPU in the 1/2 MS medium, shoot length and root numbers was greater than CPPU treatment, but the highest number of shoots was induced by the $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of CPPU concentration in 1/2MS medium. TDZ, zeatin, and BA treatments were not effective on the induction of multiple shoot in vitro culture. As a result, in vitro culture of new Saxifraga fortunei, 'Greenstar' with $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of CPPU in 1/2 MS medium was most effective for the rapid multiplication.

  • We have investigated the vegetation in the peninsula located in Ongjeong-Li Seomyeon in Youngweol-gun. Since this is a limestone area, boxtrees, Abelia mosanensis T. H. Chung ex Nakai, and Selaginella stauntoniana Spring were abundant, as these are types of vegetation characteristic of limestone areas. Pinus densiflora S. et Z. was the most dominant woody plant, but vegetational changes, such as the dominance of Quercus variabilis Blume, Quercus dentata Thunb, and Quercus mongolica Fischer, were observed in spots. In particular, the growth of nursery plants of pinus densiflora S. et Z. was not observed, and young trees like Quercus mongolica Fischer grow as low vegetation of Pinus densiflora S. et Z.. Thus, the ecological succession of Quercus mongolica Fischer is predicted. Outside the investigation area, as herbaceous plants, various vegetations were observed, including Selaginella stauntoniana Spring, Thalictrum coreanum H. Lev., Mukdenia rossii(Oliv.) Koidz., Platanthera freynii Kraenzl., Cephalanthera longibracteata Blume, Potentilla dickinsii Franch., Patrinia rupestris(Pall.) Juss., Swertia pseudochinensis H. Hara, Vicia venosa(Willd.) Maxim., Pyrola japonica Klenze ex Alef., Disporum smilacinum A. Gray, Artemisia stolonifera(Maxim.) Kom. for. Stolonifera, Smilax nipponica Miq., Adenophora triphylla var. japonica(Regel) H. Hara, Isodon inflexus(Thunb.) Kudo, Gentiana scabra Bunge for. Scabra, Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum(Miq.) Ohwi, Dioscorea quinqueloba Thunb., Syneilesis palmata(Thunb.) Maxim., Asparagus schoberioides Kunth, Eupatorium japonicum Thunb. ex Murray, Galium kinuta Nakai & Hara, Saxifraga fortunei var. incisolobata, Lilium amabile Palib., Siberian iris, Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., Atractylodes ovata(Thunb.) DC., and Lysimachia clethroides Duby.

  • A new $Saxifraga$ $fortunei$ cultivar 'Crystal' was bred by crossing 'Dotaerang' with light pink and light Green (RP 58D) colored petals and 'Rocksun' with light pink and light green white (RP62A + GW157A) colored petals. The selection and flower characterization were conducted from 2004 to 2007 in a greenhouse of the National Institute of Highland Agriculture. The flowering of 'Crystal' occurred from September 21 for 31 days. The number of flowers per plant was 279.0 with many flowering habit. The flower coloration was mixed light pink and green white (RP62D + GW157B) at the opening. The number of petals were 7.0, with a width of 2.1 cm and length of 1.8 cm. The plant height was 15.3 cm and number of leaves was 133.7. 'Crystal' cultivar can be used for pot flower. Fifty percent shading is a good cultural practice against direct sunlight and soft rot disease would occurs usually by over-irrigation. 'Crystal' cultivar was registered as a new variety with No. 3466 at Korea Seed and Variety Service in April of 2011 year.
