An Exploratory Study on Marketing of Financial Services Companies in Korea (한국 금융회사 마케팅 현황에 대한 탐색 연구)

  • Marketing financial services used to be easier. Today, the competition in financial services is fierce. Not only has the competition become more intense, financial services have also changed structurally. In an environment with various customer needs and severe competitions, the marketing in financial services industry is getting more difficult and more important than before. However, there are still not enough studies on financial services marketing in Korea whereas lots of research papers have been published frequently in some international journals. The purpose of this paper is (1)to review the literature on financial services marketing, (2)to investigate current marketing activities based on in-depth interview with financial marketing managers in Korea, and (3)to suggest some implications for future research on the financial services marketing. Financial products are not consumer products. In fact, they are not products at all in the way product marketing is usually described. Nor are they altogether like services. The financial industry operates in a unique way, and its marketing tasks are correspondingly complex. However, the literature review shows that there has been a lack of basic studies which dealt with inherent characteristics of financial services marketing compared to the research on marketing in other industries. Many studies in domestic marketing journals have so far focused only on the general customer behaviors and the special issues in some financial industries. However, for more effective financial services marketing, we have to answer following questions. Is there any difference between financial service marketing and consumer packaged goods marketing? What are the differences between the financial services marketing and other services marketing such as education and health services? Are there different ways of marketing among banks, securities firms, insurance firms, and credit card companies? In other words, we need more detailed research as well as basic studies about the financial services marketing. For example, we need concrete definitions of financial services marketing, bank marketing, securities firm marketing, and etc. It is also required to compare the characteristics of each marketing within the financial services industry. The products sold in each market have different characteristics such as duration and degree of risk-taking. It means that there are sub-categories in financial services marketing. We have to consider them in the future research on the financial services marketing. It is also necessary to study customer decision making process in the financial markets. There have been little research on how customers search and process information, compare alternatives, make final decision, and repeat their choices. Because financial services have some unique characteristics, we need different understandings in the customer behaviors compared to the behaviors in other service markets. And also considering the rapid growth in financial markets and upcoming severe competition between domestic and global financial companies, it is time to start more systematic and detailed research on financial services marketing in Korea. In the second part of this paper, I analyzed the results of in-depth interview with 20 marketing managers of financial services companies in Korea. As a result, I found that the role of marketing departments in Korean financial companies are mainly focused on the short-term activities such as sales support, promotion, and CRM data analysis although the size and history of marketing departments to some extent show a sign of maturity. Most companies established official marketing departments before 2001. Average number of employees in a marketing department is about 58. However, marketing managers in eight companies(40% of the sample) still think that the purpose of marketing is only to support and manage general sales activities. It shows that some companies have sales-oriented concept rather than marketing-oriented concept. I also found three key words which marketing managers think importantly in financial services markets. They are (1)Trust in customer relationship, (2)Brand differentiation, and (3)Rapid response to customer needs. 50% of the sample support that "Trust" is the most important key word in the financial services marketing. It is interesting that 80% of banks and securities companies think that "Trust" is the most important thing, whereas managers in credit card companies consider "Rapid response to customer needs" as the most important key word in their market. In addition, there are different problems recognition of marketing managers depending on the types of financial industries they belong to. For example, in the case of banks and insurance companies, marketing managers consider "a lack of communication with other departments" as the most serious problem. On the other hand, in the case of securities firms, "a lack of utilization of customer data" is the most serious problem. These results imply that there are different important factors for the customer satisfaction depending on the types of financial industries, and managers have to consider them when marketing financial products in more effective ways. For example, It will be necessary for marketing managers to study different important factors which affect customer satisfaction, repeat purchase, degree of risk-taking, and possibility of cross-selling according to the types of financial industries. Using Analytic Network Process to Establish Performance Evaluation Indicators for the R&D Management Department in Taiwan's High-tech Industry

  • The high-tech industry is the economic lifeline for Taiwan. Its characteristics are short product life cycle, rapid changes in the market, and a high obsolescence rate for new products. Under globalization, the high-tech industry has adopted Information Technology (IT) to shorten the manufacturing process, reduce costs and conduct product research and development (R&D) to increase the core competence of enterprises and achieve the goal of sustainable operations. Enterprises should actively strengthen their integration with internal and external resources and lead in R&D management to increase industrial operating performance. Effectively managing operations and R&D management evaluation in Taiwan's High-tech Industry has become a critical subject. This study adopted 4 major Balanced Scorecard (BSC) perspectives to establish the Total Performance Evaluation Indicators for the R&D management department in Taiwan's High-tech Industry. The Analytic Network Process (ANP) was applied to evaluate the overall performance of the R&D management department. The research framework is divided into 2 phases. The first phase is combined with the 4 major perspectives, Financial, Customer, Internal Business Process and Learning and Growth, as the related indicators for each measurement perspective. The Key Performance Indicators (KPI) were selected using Factor Analysis to identify the key factor from the complicated indicators. The relationship between the characteristics of each BSC's evaluation perspective is dependence and feedback. This study applied ANP to conduct the calculation and adjustment of correlation between each KPI, and determine on their relative weights for the objective KPI. The "Financial Perspective" for R&D management department in Taiwan's High-tech Industry focused on the budget achievement rate of R&D management. The weight indicator value is (0.05863). The "Customer Perspective" focused on problem-solving satisfaction. The weight value of this indicator is (0.17549). The "Internal Business Process Perspective" focused on the quantity and quality of R&D. The weight value of this indicator is (0.13506). The "Learning and Growth Perspective" focused on improving competence in the research personnel's professional techniques. The weight value of this indicator is (0.02789). From the total weighting indicators, the order of the Performance Indicators for the R&D management department in Taiwan's High-tech Industry is: (1) Customer Perspective; (2) Internal Business Process Perspective; (3) Financial Perspective; and (4) Learning and Growth Perspective.

The Effects of Value Chain Activity on General Hospital Management Performance (가치사슬 활동이 종합병원 경영성과에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This study, targeting Korean tertiary hospitals and general hospitals, aims to analyze how value chain model in health and medical institution suggested by Duncan and else influences on hospital management. A survey was conducted to verify the actual proof analysis of this study model. 880 questionnaires were distributed to entire 88 hospitals and 739 copies were returned from 76 hospitals. This study mainly consists of three steps to analyze the effect value chain activity has on management performance of general hospitals. For the first step, we analyzed the effects service delivery activity has on management performance. For the second step, we analyzed the effects service support activity has on management performance and for the third, we analyzed the effects interaction between service delivery activity and service support activity has on management performance. The main results of this study are as follows. First, in terms of the management performance of scale, the factors which influenced on daily charge of outpatient were service activity before treatment, at the moment of treatment and value chain activity, while more important factors in daily charge of inpatient were organizational culture, organizational structure and value chain activity. In terms of management performance of quality, the factors which influenced on the first medical examination rate of outpatient were service activity before, at the moment of and after treatment, while activity at the moment of treatment, organizational structure, and value chain activity which is interaction were more important factors in average length of stay. In terms of non-financial performance, the management performance factors which influenced on job satisfaction were service activity at the moment of, after the treatment and value chain activity, while organizational culture, strategy resources and value chain activity which is interaction were more important factors in job commitment. Secondly, all the service support activity, service delivery activity and value chain activity had statistically significant effect on management performance. Among the three factors, service support activity had relatively high effect than others.

Efficient Outlier Detection of the Water Temperature Monitoring Data (수온 관측 자료의 효율적인 이상 자료 탐지)

  • The statistical information of the coastal water temperature monitoring data can be biased because of outliers and missing intervals. Though a number of outlier detection methods have been developed, their applications are very limited to the in-situ monitoring data because of the assumptions of the a prior information of the outliers and no-missing condition, and the excessive computational time for some methods. In this study, the practical robust method is developed that can be efficiently and effectively detect the outliers in case of the big-data. This model is composed of these two parts, one part is the construction part of the approximate components of the monitoring data using the robust smoothing and data re-sampling method, and the other part is the main iterative outlier detection part using the detailed components of the data estimated by the approximate components. This model is tested using the two-years 5-minute interval water temperature data in Lake Saemangeum. It can be estimated that the outlier proportion of the data is about 1.6-3.7%. It shows that most of the outliers in the data are detected and removed with satisfaction by the model. In order to effectively detect and remove the outliers, the outlier detection using the long-span smoothing should be applied earlier than that using the short-span smoothing.

A study of adolescent smoking and drinking in Korea (청소년들의 흡연 및 음주 실태)

  • Purpose : Adolescence is a period of growth and development in body structure and physiologic, psychologic, and social functioning. Smoking and drinking in this period are very harmful and may lead to other forms of substance abuse. We surveyed the actual aspects of smoking and drinking among Korean adolescents and analyzed associated factors. Methods : A survey was performed among adolescents using a questionnaire about smoking and drinking. Data were collected from students who visited pediatric clinics for routine school examinations from July to November 2007. Results : A total of 2,546 adolescents (smoking 1,512; drinking 1,034) participated in the study. The overall smoking and drinking rates were 29.2% and 48.2%, respectively, and the mean age at the first instance of smoking and drinking was 13.8 and 14.1 years, respectively. Among drinking adolescents, 30.1% were offered a drink by their parents, although most adolescents were encouraged to smoke or drink by their friends. Dissatisfaction with family and school life, economic status, and school performance was associated with a higher smoking and drinking rate (P<0.001). Broken families were associated with a high rate of smoking, but peer satisfaction was not related to smoking or drinking. The frequency and amount of smoking and drinking in adolescents were as high as those in adults. Social sanctions seemed insufficient to keep adolescents from smoking and drinking. Conclusion : Adolescent smoking and drinking are highly influenced by family and school environments, so more active social sanctions are required, including parental involvement and legislation preventing adolescents from smoking and drinking.

Factors Related to Depressive Symptoms Among the Elderly in Urban and Rural Areas (일부 지역사회 노인들의 우울수준과 관련요인)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to determine the levels of depression symptoms among the community elderlies and to reveal its related factors, specifically aimed at revealing psycho-social factors such as social support net-work, sense of self-esteem, state anxiety, interpersonal behavior trait and locus of control. Methods: The interviews were performed during the period from April 1st to June 30th, 2007 to the 790 elderlies in urban and rural areas. Results: The mean scores of depression (CES-D) among all subjects were 16.65±10.97(urban: 18.81±10.31, rural: 14.49±11.20) and they were higher in urban than rural. The level of depression symptoms was influenced by the variables of educational level, with or without spouse, bear for living expenses, sense of satisfaction in daily life. As for health related behaviors, they were influenced by the variables of with or without regular exercise. As for health status, they were influenced by the subjective health status, with or without disability of body, visual acuity, hearing ability, ability of food mastication, urinary incontinence, with or without help in activity of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activity of daily living (IADL). As for social support net-work and social activities, they were influenced by number of offspring, frequency of offspring contents, frequency of going out and activity of hobbies. As for psycho-social factors, they were influenced by sense of self-esteem, state anxiety and social support, especially, the level of depression symptoms was higher influenced by the variables of psycho-social factors than other variables. Conclusions: Lower of the level of depression symptoms among the community elderlies would require development and application of programs to keep under management psycho-social factors as well as looking for ways to promoting the present health status.

A Study of the Behavioral Characteristics of the Primary and Secondary Searches on Online Databases (온라인 데이터베이스의 1차탐색과 2차탐색의 특성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the difference of behavioral characteristics between the primary and secondary search, the influence of the primary search results on Online databases. Data is collected by surveying the professional and end-user searchers in 33 online information service centers. 262 valid responses out of 308 questionaire are analyzed by the t-test, ANOVA, $\chi^2-test$ using SAS program. The major findings are as follows : (1) Preparatory searches(the levels of expectation, the degree of question comprehension), search results(the number of output documents, precision ratio, recall ratio, degree of satisfaction) are significantly different between the primary and secondary searches on Online Databases. But the number of search terms, Boolean logics, files, systems, relevant documents are not significantly different between the primary and secondary searches. (2) The results of the primary search affect the secondary searches. The number of output documents in the primary search affect the modification of search strategies and objects in the secondary searches. The number of relevant documents affect the variation of search scopes in the secondary searches. The precision ratio affect the change of search strategies and scopes in the secondary searches.

  • The purpose of this study is to deal with fire fighting safety education primarily among the fields of child safety education. So, first of all, this study considered the theoretical background of fire fighting safety education. And this study analyzed the present state and cases of safety accidents in elementary schools. And by focusing on the fire fighting science class for elementary schools which Gyeonggi-do Goyang fire station is executing now, this study analyzed the educational outline, present state, educational goal, and content of fire fighting science class, and conducted the satisfaction survey through questionnaire over the elementary school students participating in fire fighting science class and the fire fighting officers in charge of fire fighting science class. On basis of this research, by developing the new field of fire fighting education and publicity into the program which can diffuse the fire fighting-related chemical experiment based on the science of chemistry and physics in the future and so provide the pleasure and surprise of experiencing directly not only natural fire fighting education and publicity but also learning and the common sense of fire fighting, this study tried to present the alternatives about the measures for activating the fire fighting safety education in elementary schools.

  • The study aims to develop a assessment tool to provide the in-home disabled in a local community with appropriate services in consideration of physical, emotional, social and environmental circumstances. After collection of assesment data of 200 in-home disabled through use of the tool, a desire-extracting algorithm was developed to provide a service to real needs through the use of decision tree analysis on data mining. The study was conducted for Five months from June 2006 through October 2006, and it is divided into development of an assessment tool and extraction of real needs through the use of the tool. The basic framework of the development of the tool was established through the examination of related literature, the subjective satisfaction of the assessment tool and items were developed through the use of a focus group and experts, and verification was implemented through the use of statistics to confirm the validity of the tool.     • This research examined use rate and profitability of equipment in hospital scale with about 500 beds to present data including to review before introducing PACS with the checklist included in preparation and proposal based on expected profit suggested by operation department and cost and use rate of the expensive medical equipment were analyzed. It was proved that profit was generated in the research subject hospital if PACS is introduced. Three to five year of lease is proper for the purchase method of medical equipment. Profit after two year of use will surpass investment cost and generate clear profit. Based on the profit generated from operation of radiology department, the purchase amount to introduce PACS at the hospital will be retrieved after about 1.9 years for the investment. The number of reshoot test at radiology department will be decreased and film, development, and fixer will not be necessary to buy so the operation cost will be reduced. Moreover, other than actual profit increased, the hospital can improve its reputation and employees can reduce their works and get better working environment with less stress. Their job satisfaction will be increased so they can improve service quality and it is good for marketing strategy of the hospital. As a result of this research, it was proved that the small and general hospital should have expected profit with introduction of PACS and analyze its contribution to treatment service and profit after the purchase. Then, the hospital should make a proposal for introduction of the medical equipment and establish effective operation plan.
