The sun is a useful reference direction because of its brightness relative to other astronomical objects and its relatively small apparent radius as viewed by spacecrafts near the Earth. Most satellites use solar power as a source of energy, and so need to make sure that solar panels are oriented correctly with respect to the sun. Also, some satellites have sensitive instruments that must not be exposed to direct sunlight. For all these reasons, sun sensors are important components in spacecraft attitude determination and control systems. To minimize components and structural mass, some components have multiple purposes. The solar cells will provide power and also be used as coarse sun sensors. A coarse Sun sensor is a low-cost attitude determination sensor suitable for a wide range of space missions. The sensor measures the sun angle in two orthogonal axes. The Sun sensor measures the sun angle in both azimuth and elevation. This paper presents the development of a model to determine the attitude of a small cube-shaped satellite in space relative to the sun's direction. This sensor helps small cube-shaped Pico satellites to perform accurate attitude determination without requiring additional hardware.
KOMPSAT-2, the first Korean high resolution earth observing satellite, continuously acquires high resolution images since July 2006. The quality of satellite images should be geometrically and radiometrically ensured before distribution to users. This study focused on absolute radiometric calibration which is a prerequisite procedure to ensure the radiometric quality of optical satellite images. In this study, we performed reflectance-based vicarious calibration methods on several uniform targets collected through several field campaigns in 2007. The radiative transfer model, MODTRAN, was used to estimate the amount of energy received at the sensor. The energy reached at the sensor are affected by several factors such as reflectance of targets, atmospheric condition, geometry condition between Sun and the sensor, etc. This study proposes the absolute radiometric calibration coefficients of KOMPSAT-2 MSC images combining several types of collected data through field works and tried to compare dynamic range of sensor-detected energy with other commercial high resolution sensors.
As the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-I (KOMPSAT-1) satellite can roll tilt up to $\pm$45$^{\circ}$, we have analyzed some KOMPSAT-1 EOC images taken at different tilt angles for this study. The required ground coordinates for bundle adjustment and geometric accuracy are obtained from the digital map produced by the National Geography Institution, at a scale of 1:5,000. Followings are the steps taken for the tilting angle of KOMPSAT-1 to be present in the evaluation of geometric accuracy of each different stereo image data: Firstly, as the tilting angle is different in each image, the characteristic of satellite dynamic must be determined by the sensor modeling. Then the best sensor modeling equation should be determined. The result of this research, the difference between the RMSE values of individual stereo images is mainly due to quality of image and ground coordinates instead of tilt angle. The bundle adjustment using three KOMPSAT-1 stereo pairs, first degree of polynomials for modeling the satellite position, were sufficient.
Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4 (CAS500-4), which is scheduled to be launched in 2025, is a mid-resolution satellite with a 5 m resolution developed for wide-area agriculture and forest observation. To utilize satellite images, it is important to establish a precision sensor model and establish accurate geometric information. Previous research reported that a precision sensor model could be automatically established through the process of matching ground control point (GCP) chips and satellite images. Therefore, to improve the geometric accuracy of satellite images, it is necessary to improve the GCP chip matching performance. This paper proposes an improved GCP chip matching scheme for improved precision sensor modeling of mid-resolution satellite images. When using high-resolution GCP chips for matching against mid-resolution satellite images, there are two major issues: handling the resolution difference between GCP chips and satellite images and finding the optimal quantity of GCP chips. To solve these issues, this study compared and analyzed chip matching performances according to various satellite image upsampling factors and various number of chips. RapidEye images with a resolution of 5m were used as mid-resolution satellite images. GCP chips were prepared from aerial orthographic images with a resolution of 0.25 m and satellite orthogonal images with a resolution of 0.5 m. Accuracy analysis was performed using manually extracted reference points. Experiment results show that upsampling factor of two and three significantly improved sensor model accuracy. They also show that the accuracy was maintained with reduced number of GCP chips of around 100. The results of the study confirmed the possibility of applying high-resolution GCP chips for automated precision sensor modeling of mid-resolution satellite images with improved accuracy. It is expected that the results of this study can be used to establish a precise sensor model for CAS500-4.
A numerical formula that presents relationship between a point of a satellite image and its ground position is called a sensor model. For precise geolocation of satellite images, we need an error-free sensor model. However, the sensor model based on GOES ephemeris data has some error, in particular after Image Motion Compensation (IMC) mechanism has been turned off. To solve this problem, we investigate three sensor models: Collinearity model, Direct Linear Transform (DLT) model and Orbit-based model. We apply matching between GOES images and global coastline database and use successful results as control points. With control points we improve the initial image geolocation accuracy using the three models. We compare results from three sensor models that are applied to GOES-9 images. As a result, a suitable sensor model for precise geolocation of GOES-9 images is proposed.

In this paper, data transmission corrugated horn antenna for RF sensor satellite system and its radiation characteristic are presented. The proposed antenna is designed, fabricated and measured to obtain the maximum gain at ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ of its radiation patterns. The result of the proposed antenna is that the return loss is less than -15 dB and the gain is over 5 dBi at ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ of its radiation patterns. From these results, it is confirmed that the proposed can be used as data transmission corrugated horn antenna for RF sensor satellite system.

Many nations have been launched their own earth observation satellites due to much interest in space exploration. Because of this, the number of high resolution satellite are increasing day by day. With the development of web environment, general users have easy access to satellite images. The research conducted a basic study about web-based satellite photogrammetry in order to determine three dimensional coordinates easily without having profound knowledge of satellite sensor modeling. Various element technologies were analyzed to decide three dimensional coordinates by using high resolution satellite images in web environment, and case studies were conducted by using IKONOS satellite images. By applying parallel projection model, which is one of sensor modeling methods, epipolar image was created and prototype form of program that can decide three dimensional location in web environment was implemented. Through this, general users could decide three dimensional location easily in web environment and knew that already existed spatial information can be renewed and used in service area.
The satellite sensor model is typically established using ground control points acquired by ground survey Of existing topographic maps. In some cases where the targeted area can't be accessed and the topographic maps are not available, it is difficult to obtain ground control points so that geospatial information could not be obtained from satellite image. The paper presents several satellite sensor models and satellite image decomposition methods for non-accessible area where ground control points can hardly acquired in conventional ways. First, 10 different satellite sensor models, which were extended from collinearity condition equations, were developed and then the behavior of each sensor model was investigated. Secondly, satellite images were decomposed and also pseudo images were generated. The satellite sensor model extended from collinearity equations was represented by the six exterior orientation parameters in 1$^{st}$, 2$^{nd}$ and 3$^{rd}$ order function of satellite image row. Among them, the rotational angle parameters such as $\omega$(omega) and $\phi$(phi) correlated highly with positional parameters could be assigned to constant values. For non-accessible area, satellite images were decomposed, which means that two consecutive images were combined as one image. The combined image consists of one satellite image with ground control points and the other without ground control points. In addition, a pseudo image which is an imaginary image, was prepared from one satellite image with ground control points and the other without ground control points. In other words, the pseudo image is an arbitrary image bridging two consecutive images. For the experiments, SPOT satellite images exposed to the similar area in different pass were used. Conclusively, it was found that 10 different satellite sensor models and 5 different decomposed methods delivered different levels of accuracy. Among them, the satellite camera model with 1$^{st}$ order function of image row for positional orientation parameters and rotational angle parameter of kappa, and constant rotational angle parameter omega and phi provided the best 60m maximum error at check point with pseudo images arrangement.

DATS will connect with IMPS and LHGS to perform the reception of sensor data and the transmission of user's meteorological data, LRIT and HRIT. MODEM/BB will perform the de-commutation of received sensor data as MI and GOCI raw data according to VCID before sending them to MI and GOCI IMPS, respectively. Especially, MODEM/BB in SOC needs to be connected to six clients that consist of the primary and backup IMPS of MSC, KOSC and SOC. On the other hand, LRIT and HRIT delivered from LHGS are encoded as VITERBI and modulated by MODEM/BB. Considering sensor data transmitted from COMS, the assumed format and size of CADU are described in this paper. Finally, results related to the status of received LRIT and HRIT by frame synchronizer in user station are also described.
The methods of the geometric reconstruction and sensor calibration of satellite linear pushbroom images are investigated. The model of the sensor used is based on the SPOT model that is developed by Kraiky. The satellite trajectory is a Keplerian trajectory in the approximation. Four orbit parameters, longitude of the ascending node(${\omega}$), inclination of the orbit plan(I), latitude argument of the satellite(W) and distance between earth center and satellite, are used for the camera modeling. Time-dependent orbit parameters are expressed by quadratic polynomials. SPOT-5 images have been used for validation tests. The results are that the RMSE acquired from 20 GCPs is 1.763m and the RMSE of 5 checking points 2.470m. Because the ground resolution of SPOT-5 is 2.5m, the result obtained in this study has a good accuracy. It demonstrates that the sensor model developed by this study can be used to reconstruct the geometry of satellite image using pushbroom camera.
