  • We derive and analyze a bit error rate(BER) expression of a Gray coded rectangular QAM(R-QAM) signal with maximal ratio combining diversity(MRC) reception over Nakagami-n(Rician) fading channels. The derived result is provided in terms of the Whittaker function and the confluent hypergeometric function. In addition, by performance comparison with M-PSK, we see the Nakagami-n fading channel characteristics. Because the derived expression is general, it can readily allow numerical e·valuation for various cases of practical interest such as line-of-sight (LOS) or satellite communication channel analysis.

  • The accuracy and efficiency of RTK-GPS is proved through its measurement, but it is not used in cadastral detail surveying, due to low accuracy caused by the trouble of satellite reception in a built-up area and lack of detailed guidelines for practical application. Thus, this study tries to offer detailed directions for the practical use of RTK-GPS by analyzing the application problem of RTK-GPS measurement. As results of the study, for the practical use of RTK-GPS it suggests enactment of regulations, connection of practical RTK-GPS measurement with the existing detail surveying methods, introduction of a VRS method for increasing the arrangement density of reference stations, and integrated use of GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellites for securing accuracy and stability.

  • In this paper, we propose a performance index that can compare the position estimation performance according to the time slot allocation order, which is superior in the position estimation performance in the operation of the Link-16 based relative navigation system. In order to verify the validity of the performance index, a software-based Link-16 relative navigation system performance analysis platform composed of a signal generator, a signal reception and navigation algorithm execution unit, and a performance analysis unit was designed. Using the designed software platform, we analyzed the relationship between proposed performance index and position estimation performance according to time slot allocation order in the same position reference (PR) arrangement. The performance index of the proposed time slot allocation is expected to be utilized not only for the Link-16 system, but also for the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)-based navigation system.

  • This paper presents the design results of a Multi-band Global Positioning System (GPS)/Korean Positioning System (KPS) Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) precise positioning simulator and evaluate its functionalities. The designed simulator consists of a trajectory generation module, a Radio Frequency (RF) signal generation module, a RF signal reception module, a coarse positioning module, a precise positioning module, and an error statistics reporting module. Simulations in realistic scenarios confirm that the proposed baseband simulator works appropriately. The developed simulator can adjust the type, number, band, and Pseudo Random Noise (PRN) code type of the satellite constellation in various ways, and the practical positioning performance can be tested. It can also reflect the channel influence at the actual RF stage and the influence during the initial synchronization and tracking process. Considering such advantages, the proposed simulator would be useful in future researches and developments related to KPS.

  • Radiosonde is an important in-situ profiling instrument that measures atmospheric temperature, moisture, and wind structure from the surface to the middle stratosphere. The operational radiosonde measurements are carried out more than twice (at 0000 UTC and 1200 UTC) daily at approximately 1,300 World Meteorological Organization (WMO) stations and play a pivotal role in daily weather forecasts. It also contributes to the monitoring of atmospheric structure by providing the key physical information like temperature and pressure, forming the backbone of atmospheric (re)analyses and numerical weather forecasts. Additionally, high-resolution radiosonde profiles are used for calibration and evaluation of satellite products. Despite these advantages, radiosonde measurements are mostly limited to operational uses due to the high initial cost of ground instrument setup required for data transmission and reception. This study outlines a cost-effective (roughly one-tenth of the operational cost) method for establishing the ground station and the necessary radiosonde measurement procedures, offering guidance for individual researchers or university-level instructors.

  • The S-band telemetry and telecommand formats for geostationary orbit satellites should have sufficient reliability, since they transmit massive satellite health data and receive the mission commands in the 36,000km of the geostationary orbit. Also, they have to efficiently manage the large quantity of satellite health data under the limited data transmission rate. Cheollian-2A and 2B satellites were developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute and launched at 2018 and 2020, respectively. Their missions are to conduct continuously the mission of Cheollian-1, which was the first geostationary orbit satellite of Korea. Therefore, the fundamental S-band data format design for Cheollian-2A and 2B should meet the requirements of Cheollian-1. Meanwhile the latest remote data processing techniques for these newest geostationary orbit satellites should be implemented. In this paper, the advanced S-band space data formats and management methods are proposed for more efficient data transmission, reception and operation with the limited data rate of the geostationary orbit satellites. The implemented results in the flight software of Cheollian-2A and 2B are described in detail.

  • In this paper, for both transmission and reception with single antenna system of satellite communication, dual-frequency antennas which operate simultaneously at 12.5 GHz and at 14.25 GHz are designed, constructed and measured. Also by using dual feeding structure, the problems of single-fed dual-frequency antenna such as the separation of transmitting and receiving signals and single polarization, are solved. Microstrip patch as a radiation element of dual-fed dual-frequency antenna has width and length which are the resonance lengths of the corresponding frequencies for transmission and reception, respectively. The effects of the feed line on the other frequency feeding are minimized with the optimal matching scheme for the feed lines. For solving the space problems of dual-fed two-dimensional array antennas, microstrip-line and coaxial probe feedings are used for each frequency and a two-dimensional $2\times2$ array antenna was designed and measured their characteristics. The experimental results show that errors of resonance frequencies are less than 1.44%, the return losses are less than -21 dB and the isolations between two feeding ports are less than -21 dB. The characteristics of radiation patterns of dual frequency microstrip antenna are measured and evaluated. The directivities, sidelobe levels and cross polarizations are also measured and compared with the simulations. The results show some errors due to the misalignment of coaxial probe feeding.

  • By increased moving speed of aircraft, estimating location of itself becomes more important than ever. This requirement is satisfied by appearance of GPS, however it is useless when signal reception from satellite is not good enough by interruption, for example, traffic jamming. Applying link for communication to additional positioning system is capable of providing relative position of aircraft. Estimating location with link for communication is done without additional equipment but with signal processing based on correlation of received signal. ESPRIT is one of the representative algorithm among them. Estimating correlation matrix is possible to have error since it includes average operation needs enough number of samples not impractical. Therefore we propose algorithm that defines, estimates and removes error matrix of correlation. Proposing algorithm shows better performance than previous one when transmitters are close.

  • In this paper, we proposed and fabricated the single-feed dual-band circular patch antenna for S-DMB(Satellite-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) and ITS(Intelligent Transport Systems) services. The manufactured dual-band antenna showed that the measured -10 dB bandwidth and the minimum return loss was 90 MHz and -35 dB for S-DMB, 180 MHz and -18 dB for ITS, respectively. It is noticed that the measured and the simulated results are agreed well. And the antenna gain of S-DMB and ITS has 2.3 dBi and 2.7 dBi, respectively.

  • GPS (global positioning system) is a popular system that provides location information by measuring arrival time difference at the receiver between several GPS satellite signals. GPS is widely used in commercial area as well as military systems. Reliable GPS signal reception is more important in the military applications such as guided missiles. However, since the carrier frequencies of the GPS signals are well known and the received power is extremely low, the GPS systems are vulnerable to intentional jamming attacks. To remove jammers while maintaining GPS signals at the received signals, a popular technique is an adaptive beam steering method based on array antenna. Among adaptive beam steering techniques, this paper considers MVDR (minimum variance distortionless response) algorithm, and proposes a new adaptive technique that preserves the received signals at desired directions, but removes the unknown jamming signals adaptively. The performance of the proposed method is verified through computer simulation.
