  • Propulsion System provides the required velocity change impulse for orbit transfer from parking orbit to mission orbit and three-axis vehicle attitude control impulse. New LEO Satellite propulsion system (PS) will be an all-welded, monopropellant hydrazine system. The PS consists of the subassemblies and components such as Thrusters, Propellant Tank, Pressure Transducer, Propellant Filter, Latching Isolation Valves, Fill/Drain Valves, interconnecting propellant line assembly, and thermal hardwares for operation-environment control of the PS. In this study, preliminary design process of LEO Satellite propulsion system will be summarized.

Array Antenna Design for Ku-Band Terminal of L.E.O Satellite Communication

  • This study is a Ku-band array antenna for the manufacture of low-orbit satellite communication terminals, designed to have miniaturization, high gain, and wide beam width. The transmission of low-orbit satellite communication has a right-rotating circularly polarized wave, and the reception has a left-rotating circularly polarized wave. The 4×8 array antenna was separated for transmission and reception, and it was combined with the RF circuit part of the transmitter and receiver, and was terminated in the form of a waveguide for RF signal impedance matching in the form of a transition from the microstrip line to the waveguide. The 30° beam width of the receiver maximum gain of 19 dBi and the 29° beam width of the transmitter maximum gain of 18 dBi are shown. Through this antenna configuration, the system was configured to suit the low-orbit satellite transmission/reception characteristics.

Prediction of Parabolic Antenna Satellite Drag Force in Low Earth Orbit using Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method (직접모사법을 이용한 지구 저궤도 파라볼릭 안테나 탑재 위성의 항력 예측)

  • Consumption of the fuel on the satellite operating in low earth orbit, is increased due to the air resistance and the amount of increase makes the satellite lifetime decrease or the satellite mass risen. Therefore the prediction of drag force of the satellite is important. In the paper, drag force and drag coefficient analysis of the parabolic antenna satellite in low earth orbit using direct simulation monte carlo method (DSMC) is conducted according to the mission altitude and angle of attack. To verify the DSMC simulated rarefied air movement, Starshine satellite drag coefficient according to the altitude and gas-surface interaction are compared with the flight data. Finally, from the analysis results, it leads to appropriate satellite drag coefficient for orbit lifetime calculation.

  • The Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite(COMS), the first geostationary observation satellite, was successfully launched on June 27th in 2010. The raw data of Meteorological Imager(MI) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the main payloads of COMS, is delivered to end-users through the on-ground processing. The COMS Image Data Acquisition and Control System(IDACS) developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in domestic technologies performs radiometric and geometric corrections to raw data and disseminates pre-processed image data and additional data to end-users through the satellite. Currently the IDACS is in the nominal operations phase after successful in-orbit testing and operates in National Meteorological Satellite Center, Korea Ocean Satellite Center, and Satellite Operations Center, During the in-orbit test period, validations on functionalities and performance IDACS were divided into 1) image data acquisition and transmission, 2) preprocessing of MI and GOCI raw data, and 3) end-user dissemination. This paper presents that IDACS' operational validation results performed during the in-orbit test period after COMS' launch.

  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications has become a crucial technology for next-generation communication networks owing to its hyperconnectivity capabilities. We examine the progress and application areas of LEO satellite communication services. The LEO satellite communication industry has transitioned from being predominantly driven by governments and institutions to being led by the private sector, following the trajectory of the NewSpace movement. Leading corporations such as SpaceX Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb are deploying LEO satellite networks to offer internet services, while Telesat is preparing to establish its satellite communication network. LEO satellite communications is expected to have a major impact on various sectors of society, particularly for upcoming sixth-generation services. Therefore, the South Korean government must promptly formulate policy support strategies aimed at invigorating the LEO satellite communication industry. This can be achieved through initiatives such as bolstering research and development and extending corporate assistance.

Analysis of Precise Orbit Determination of the KARISMA Using Optical Tracking Data of a Geostationary Satellite (정지궤도위성의 광학 관측데이터를 이용한 KARISMA의 정밀궤도결정 결과 분석)

  • In this paper, a precise orbit determination process was carried out based on KARISMA(KARI Collision Risk Management System) developed by KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute), in which optical tracking data of a geostationary satellite was used. The real optical tracking data provided by ESA(European Space Agency) for the ARTEMIS geostationary satellite was used. And orbit determination error was approximately 420 m compared to that of the ESA's orbit determination result from the same optical tracking data. In addition, orbit prediction was conducted based on the orbit determination result with optical tracking data for 4 days, and the position error for the orbit prediction during 3 days was approximately 500~600 m compared to that of ESA's result. These results imply that the performance of the KARISMA's orbit determination function is suitable to apply to the collision risk assessment for the space debris.

  • KOorea Multi-purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT)-5 will be launched at 550km altitude in 2010. Accurate satellite position(20 cm) and velocity(0.03 cm/s) are required to treat highly precise Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) image processing. Ionosphere delay was eliminated using dual frequency GPS data and double differenced GPS measurement removed common clock errors of both GPS satellites and receiver. SAC-C carrier phase data with 0.1 Hz sampling rate was used to achieve precise orbit determination(POD) with ETRI GNSS Precise Orbit Determination(EGPOD) software, which was developed by ETRI. Dynamic model approach was used and satellite's position, velocity, and the coefficients of solar radiation pressure and drag were adjusted once per arc using Batch Least Square Estimator(BLSE) filter. Empirical accelerations for sinusoidal radial, along-track, and cross track terms were also estimated once per revolution for unmodeled dynamics. Additionally piece-wise constant acceleration for cross-track direction was estimated once per arc. The performance of POD was validated by comparing with JPL's Precise Orbit Ephemeris(POE).

  • Passive attitude stabilization methods using the permanent magnet combined with hysteresis damper and the gravity gradient boom have been widely used for the attitude determination and control of cube satellite, due to its advantage of system simplicity. In this paper, on-orbit thermal characteristics of the cube satellite considering the attitude profiles obtained from the above passive attitude stabilization methods have been investigated through on-orbit thermal analysis. In addition, the effectiveness of the various thermal coatings on the panel for the communication antenna installation has been verified.

  • A propulsion system of a satellite provides a necessary thrust to reach to the final orbit after a separation from a launch vehicle. Also, it supplies pulse moments to maintain the satellite in a mission orbit and for its attitude controls during a mission life time. The present study investigates the development trend of bipropellant rocket engines for an orbit transfer and an attitude control of a satellite using monomethylhydrazine and hydrazine for fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide for oxidizer to derive fundamental specifications which are necessary for domestic development researches. Also, their major performance characteristics are summarized.

Initial On-Orbit Modulation Transfer Function Performance Analysis for Geostationary Ocean Color Imager

  • The world's first geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) is a three-mirror anastigmat optical system 140 mm in diameter. Designed for 500 m ground sampling distance, this paper deals with on-orbit modulation transfer function (MTF)measurement and analysis for GOCI. First, the knife-edge and point source methods were applied to the 8th band (865 nm) image measured April 5th, 2011. The target details used are the coastlines of the Korean peninsula and of Japan, and an island 400 meters in diameter. The resulting MTFs are 0.35 and 0.34 for the Korean East Coastline and Japanese West Coastline edge targets, respectively, and 0.38 for the island target. The daily and seasonal MTF variations at the Nyquist frequency were also checked, and the result is $0.32{\pm}0.04$ on average. From these results, we confirm that the GOCI on-orbit MTF performance satisfies the design requirements of 0.32 for 865 nm wavelength.
