  • The Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) image and the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) of an target area are put into use to generate three dimensional image map. An method of image map generation is explained. The orbit and attitude determination of satellite makes it possible to model signal acquisition configuration precisely, which is a key to mapping image coordinates to geographic coordinates of concerned area. An application is made to RADARSAT in the purpose of testing its validity. To determine the orbit, zero Doppler range is used. And to determine the attitude, Doppler centroid frequency, which is the frequency observed when target is put in the center of antenna's view, is used. Conventional geocoding has been performed on the basis of direct method(mapping image coordinates to geographic coordinates), but in this reserch the inverse method(mapping from geographic coordinates to image coordinates) is taken. This paper shows that precise signal acquisition modeling based on the orbit and attitude determination of satellite as a platform leads to a satellite-centered accurate geocoding process. It also shows how to model relative motion between space-borne radar and target. And the relative motion is described in ECIC(earth-centered-initial coordinates) using Doppler equation and signal acquisition geometry.

  • The conventional water quality measurements by point sampling provide only site specific temporal water quality information but not the synoptic geographic coverage of water quality distribution. To circumvent these limitations in temporal and spatial measurements, the use of remote sensing is increasingly involved in the water quality monitoring research. In other to assess a trophic state of Yongdam reservoir using satellite imagery data, I obtained Landsat ETM data and water quality data on 16th September and 18th October 2001. The approach involved acquisition of water quality samples from boats at 33 sites on 16th September and 30 sites on 18th October 2001, simultaneous with Landsat-7 satellite overpass. The correlation coefficients between the DN values of the imagery and the concentrations of chlorophyll-a were analyzed. The visible bands(band 1,2,3) and near infrared band(band 4) data of September image showed the correlation coefficient values higher than 0.9. The October image showed the correlation coefficient values about 0.7 due to the atmospheric effect and low variation of chlorophyll-a concentration. Regression models between the chrophyll-a concentration and DN values of the Landsat imagery data have been developed for each image. The regression model was determined based on the spectral characteristics of chlorophyll, so the green band(band 2) and near infrared band(band 4) were selected to generate a trophic state map. The coefficient of determination(R2) of the regression model for 16th September was 0.95 and that of the regression model for 18th October was 0.55. According to the trophic state map made based on Aizaki's TSI and chlorophyll-a concentration, the trophic state of Yongdam reservoir was mostly eutrophic state during this study.

  • Crown density, which is defined as the proportion of the forest floor concealed by tree crown, is important and useful information in various fields. Previous methods of measuring crown density have estimated crown density by interpreting aerial photographs or through a ground survey. These are time-consuming, labor-intensive, expensive and inconsistent approaches, as they involve a great deal of subjectivity and rely on the experience of the interpreter. In this study, the crown density of a forest in Korea was estimated using KOMPSAT-2 high-resolution satellite images. Using the image segmentation technique and stand information of the digital forest map, the forest area was divided into zones. The crown density for each segment was determined using the discriminant analysis method and the forest ratio method. The results showed that the accuracy of the discriminant analysis method was about 60%, while the accuracy of the forest ratio method was about 85%. The probability of extraction of candidate to update was verified by comparing the result with the digital forest map.

  • Major differences between wind speeds from atmospheric pressure maps (Na wind) and nearsurface wind speeds derived from satellite scatterometer (NSCAT) observations over the East (Japan) Sea have been examined. The rootmeansquare errors of Na wind and NSCAT wind speeds collocated with Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) buoy winds are about $3.84\;ms^{-1}\;and\;1.53\;ms^{-1}$, respectively. Time series of NSCAT wind speeds showed a high coherency of 0.92 with the real buoy measurements and contained higher spectral energy at low frequencies (>3 days) than the Na wind. The magnitudes of monthly Na winds are lower than NSCAT winds by up to 45%, particularly in September 1996. The spatial structures between the two are mostly coherent on basinwide large scales; however, significant differences and energy loss are found on a spatial scale of less than 100 km. This was evidenced by the temporal EOFs (Empirical Orthogonal Functions) of the two wind speed data sets and by their twodimensional spectra. Since the Na wind was based on the atmospheric pressures on the weather map, it overlooked smallscale features of less than 100 km. The center of the coldair outbreak through Vladivostok, expressed by the Na wind in January 1997, was shifted towards the North Korean coast when compared with that of the NSCAT wind, whereas NSCAT winds revealed its temporal evolution as well as spatial distribution.

  • In generating DTM as basic data to GIS, the use of existing map is difficult to aquire current data and the method using airphotos needs cost for stereoplotting and ground control surveying. So, the method of DTM generation by satellite imagery is promising because satellite is able to observe wide area at once. In this study the program for SPOT bundle adjustment and image matching based on Coarse to Fine method is developed and various image enhancement algorithm is used for more accurate DTM generation and also evaluation of accuracy was carried out. Further more, orthophoto, a bird's eye-view, contour map producing, net-work analysis and terrain analysis were performed for GIS applications using generated DTM in this study. Generated DTM using SPOT stereo imagery is useful for GIS applications such as automated mapping, facility management, national geographic information system. Moreover developed automatic DTM generation pro-gram is studied, tested and verified more to be applicable to all the area.

  • The High-resolution satellite images are able to get the latest information of wide range area and to shorten updating cycle of digital map better than the aerial images. Especially, as high-resolution satellite images are opened to public recently and able to be used commercially, the studies that make ortho-images using them and apply to the digital mapping and the database of geo-spatial information system are having been progressed actively. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to establish the auto-extraction methods and to develop algorithms for automatically extracting buildings which are distributed very much in urban areas and which updating cycle needs to shorten, out of man-made structures in the IKONOS ortho-image with 1m spatial resolution. The result of this study, we can extract automatically extract 72% out of the whole buildings. And we could know that the methods and algorithms proposed in this study are good relatively analyzing the error trend by means of the comparison with ortho-image, digital map and hawing result.

  • In this study, the orbit-based sensor modeling is applied to the digital plotting and the accuracy of digital plotting is analyzed. The KOMPSAT-2 satellite image with orbit-attitude model is used for the analysis. The precise sensor modeling with various combination of parameters is performed for the stereo satellite image. In addition, we analyze the error range of ground control points by applying the result of stereo modeling to digital survey system. According to the result, it is possible to produce digital map using stereo image with a small number of GCPs when the orbit-based sensor modeling for KOMPSAT-2 is applied. This means that it is suitable for the generation of digital map on a scale of 1/5,000 to 1/25,000 considering the resolution of KOMPSAT-2 image.

  • The Arctic Circle's huge amounts of fossil fuels and mineral resources are being developed and subjected to active construction projects. Global efforts are continuing to actively respond to climate change, but the dependence on fossil fuels remains high. This study reports a preliminary survey conducted in Alberta, Canada, where oil sand resources are actively developed. A land cover map was prepared using satellite imagery to reduce the cost and time of surveying a wide area. Results likely useful to resource development projects such as ground surface temperature and snow cover distribution were derived by using the obtained image classification results. It is expected that the results of the present research and analysis will be used to establish strategies for the successful promotion and operation of projects to develop resources in the Arctic.

  • Recently, the use of mashup that integrates real-time data with spatial data such as tiled map and satellite imagery has been increased significantly. As the use of mashup has been extended to various fields of O2O, LBS, Smart City, and Autonomous Driving, the performance of mashup has become more important. Therefore, this study aims to compare and analyze the performance of various map platforms, when large amounts of real-time data are integrated with spatial data. Specifically, we compare the performance of most popular map platforms available in Korea, such as Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Daum Map, Naver Map, olleh Map, and VWorld. We also compare the performance using most common web browsers of Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. In the performance analysis, we measured and compared the initialization time of basic map and the mashup time of real-time data for the above map platforms. From analysis results, we could find that Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, VWorld, and olleh Map platforms showed a better performance than the others.

  • This study compared the influence of water quality according to the data sources of spatial information. Firstly, land cover map was constructed through image classification of Daecheong-dam basin and the accuracy of image classification from satellite image showed high as 88.76% in comparison with the large-scaled land cover map in Ministry of Environment, to calculate Event Mean Concentration (EMC) by land cover that impact on the evaluation of nonpoint source pollutant loads. Also curve number and direct runoff were calculated by spatial overlay with soil map and land cover map from image classification. And Seokcheon and Daecheong-Dam basin showed high in the analysis of curve number and direct runoff. Samgacheon-Joint and Sokcheon-Downstream basin showed high in the nonpoint source pollutant loads of BOD from direct runoff and EMC. And Samgacheon-Joint and Bonghwangcheon- Downstream basin showed high in the nonpoint source pollutant loads of TN and TP. Nonpoint source pollutant loads from image classification were compared with those by the land cover map from Ministry of Environment to present the effectivity of nonpoint source pollutant loads from satellite image. And Daecheong-Dam Upstream basin showed high as 10.64%, 11.70% and 20.00% respectively in the errors of nonpoint source pollutant loads of BOD, TN, and TP. Therefore, it is desirable that spatial information including with paddy and dry field is applied to the evaluation of nonpoint source pollutant loads in order to simulate water quality of basin effectively.
