More than 0.5 percent of land in Korea is used for cemetery and the rate is growing in spite of the increase in cremation these days. The systematic management of tombs may be possible through the ‘Feature Extraction’ method which is applied to the high-resolution satellite imagery. For this reason, this research focused on finding out the radiometric characteristics of tombs and the classification of them. An IKONOS image of northwest areas of Seoul with 8km x 10km dimension was analyzed. After sampling 24 tombs in the study area, the statistical radiometric characteristics of tombs are analyzed. And tombs were classified based on the criteria such as landscape, NDVI, and cluster analysis. In addition, it was investigated if the aspect or slope of the terrain influenced to the classification of tombs. As a result of this research, authors find that there is similarity between the classification tv NDVI and the classification through cluster analysis. And aspect or slope didn't have much influence on the classification of tombs.

Recent progress in state-of-the-art geospatial information technologies such as digital mapping, LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging), and high-resolution satellite imagery provides various data sources fer Digital Elevation Model(DEM). DEMs are major source to extract elements of the hydrological terrain property that are necessary for efficient watershed management. Especially, watersheds extracted from DEM are important geospatial database to identify physical boundaries that are utilized in water resource management plan including water environmental survey, pollutant investigation, polluted/wasteload/pollution load allocation estimation, and water quality modeling. Most of the previous studies related with watershed extraction using DEM are mainly focused on the hydrological elements analysis and preprocessing without considering grid size of the DEMs. This study aims to analyze accuracy of the watersheds extracted from DEMs with various grid sizes generated by LiDAR data and digital map, and appropriate preprocessing methods.
Volcanic ash is a fine particle smaller than 2 mm in diameters. It falls after the volcanic eruption and causes various damages to transportation, manufacturing industry and respiration of living things. Therefore diffusion information of volcanic ash is highly significant for preventing the damages from it. It is advantageous to utilize satellites for observing the widely diffusing volcanic ash. In this study volcanic ash diffusion information about two eruptions of Mt. Sakurajima were calculated using the geostationary satellite, Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) Meteorological Imager (MI) and polar-orbiting satellite, Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and the Thermal InfraRed Sensor (TIRS). The direction and velocity of volcanic ash diffusion were analyzed by extracting the volcanic ash pixels from COMS-MI images and the height was retrieved by adjusting the shadow method to Landsat-8 images. In comparison between the results of this study and those of Volcanic Ash Advisories center (VAAC), the volcanic ash tend to diffuse the same direction in both case. However, the diffusion velocity was about four times slower than VAAC information. Moreover, VAAC only provide an ash height while our study produced a variety of height information with respect to ash diffusion. The reason for different results is measured location. In case of VAAC, they produced approximate ash information around volcano crater to rapid response, while we conducted an analysis of the ash diffusion whole area using ash observed images. It is important to measure ash diffusion when large-scale eruption occurs around the Korean peninsula. In this study, it can be used to produce various ash information about the ash diffusion area using different characteristics satellite images.

Lack of streamflow observations makes model calibration difficult and limits model performance improvement. Satellite-based remote sensing products offer a new alternative as they can be actively utilized to obtain hydrological data. Recently, several studies have shown that artificial intelligence-based solutions are more appropriate than traditional conceptual and physical models. In this study, a data-driven approach combining various recurrent neural networks and decision tree-based algorithms is proposed, and the utilization of satellite remote sensing information for AI training is investigated. The satellite imagery used in this study is from MODIS and SMAP. The proposed approach is validated using publicly available data from 25 watersheds. Inspired by the traditional regionalization approach, a strategy is adopted to learn one data-driven model by integrating data from all basins, and the potential of the proposed approach is evaluated by using a leave-one-out cross-validation regionalization setting to predict streamflow from different basins with one model. The GRU + Light GBM model was found to be a suitable model combination for target basins and showed good streamflow prediction performance in ungauged basins (The average model efficiency coefficient for predicting daily streamflow in 25 ungauged basins is 0.7187) except for the period when streamflow is very small. The influence of satellite remote sensing information was found to be up to 10%, with the additional application of satellite information having a greater impact on streamflow prediction during low or dry seasons than during wet or normal seasons.

The application of remote sensing in small scale mapping has recently been widened to various fields such as information analysis of landuse, environmental conservation and natural resources. SPOT imagery, in particular, offers data which can be processed for 3-dimensional point determination. This is made possible by its high resolution, appropriate swatch width/altitude ratio and stereo imaging capabilities. This study aims to develop a suitable polymonial and an algorithm in the determination of exterior orientation which is essential in the 3-dimensional point determination of SPOT imgery. An algorithm is presented in this study to determine the exterior orientation of a preprocessed level lB film of the satellite image. It was found that a polynominal of 15 parameters is the best fit polynominal for exterior orientation determination, where 1st order line function is used for positon ($X_o$, $Y_o$, $Z_o$) and 2nd order line function is used for orientation (${\kappa}_o$, ${\phi}_o$, ${\omega}_o$).
The caldera lake "Chun-ji" is located at the summit of Baekdu volcano, which is in the border of China and North Korea. Chun-ji Lake has altitude 2,189 m above sea level. The Chun-ji is freezing in the winter when the water temperature goes down to zero for a year, and it melts in the season when the water temperature goes up again. However, since it is located at a high altitude, there are many cloudy days, and it is difficult to observe with optical images. For this reason, radar images, which are less influenced by weather than optical images, are more effective for observing the ice of heaven and earth. In this study, 75 TerraSAR-X images from chun-ji area were used for analysis from 2015 to 2017, and the calculated ice area and temperature changes were analyzed. As a result, the ice of the caldera lake formed was formed in early December and slowly melted until mid-April. During this period, temperatures in the Samjiyeon area were about $-10^{\circ}C$ when ice was produced, and the temperature was about $0^{\circ}C$ in mid-April when it was thawing. Correlation coefficients between ice surface area and temperature in winter 2015 and 2016, where global ice is produced, show a high correlation of -0.82 and -0.75. In addition to the results of this study, it can be used as an indicator to monitor the volcanic activity by comparing the result of the recent volcanic activity with the result of the increase in water temperature using various imagery.
The remotely sensed data, such as satellite imagery and aerial photos, can be used to extract and detect some objects in the image through image interpretation and processing techniques. Significantly, the possibility for utilizing digital map updating and land monitoring has been increased through automatic object detection since spatial resolution of remotely sensed data has improved and technologies about deep learning have been developed. In this paper, we tried to extract plastic greenhouses into aerial orthophotos by using fully convolutional densely connected convolutional network (FC-DenseNet), one of the representative deep learning models for semantic segmentation. Then, a quantitative analysis of extraction results had performed. Using the farm map of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairsin Korea, training data was generated by labeling plastic greenhouses into Damyang and Miryang areas. And then, FC-DenseNet was trained through a training dataset. To apply the deep learning model in the remotely sensed imagery, instance norm, which can maintain the spectral characteristics of bands, was used as normalization. In addition, optimal weights for each band were determined by adding attention modules in the deep learning model. In the experiments, it was found that a deep learning model can extract plastic greenhouses. These results can be applied to digital map updating of Farm-map and landcover maps.

Vegetation phenology is the most important indicator of ecosystem response to climate change. Therefore it is necessary to continuously monitor forest phenology. This paper analyzes the phenological characteristics of forests in South Korea using the MODIS vegetation index with error from clouds or other sources removed using the HANTS algorithm. After using the HANTS algorithm to reduce the noise of the satellite-based vegetation index data, we were able to confirm that phenological transition dates varied strongly with altitudinal gradients. The dates of the start of the growing season, end of the growing season and the length of the growing season were estimated to vary by +0.71day/100m, -1.33day/100m and -2.04day/100m in needleleaf forests, +1.50day/100m, -1.54day/100m and -3.04day/100m in broadleaf forests, +1.39day/100m, -2.04day/100m and -3.43day/100m in mixed forests. We found a linear pattern of variation in response to altitudinal gradients that was related to air temperature. We also found that broadleaf forests are more sensitive to temperature changes compared to needleleaf forests.
On 21 September 2010, one of Chuseok holidays in Korea, localized heavy rainfalls occurred over the midwestern region of the Korean peninsula. In this study MTSAT-2 infrared and water vapor channel imagery are examined to find out some features which are obvious in each stage of the life cycle of convective cell for this heavy rain event. Also the kinematic and thermodynamic features probably associated with them are investigated. The first clouds related with the Chuseok heavy rain are detected as low-level multicell cloud (brightness temperature: $-15{\sim}0^{\circ}C$) in the middle of the Yellow sea at 1630~1900 UTC on 20 Sept., which are probably associated with the convergence at 1000 hPa. Convective cells are initiated in the vicinity of Shantung peninsula at 1933 UTC 20, which have developed around the edge of the dark region in water vapor images. At two times of 0033 and 0433 UTC 21 the merging of two convective cells happens near midwestern coast of the peninsula and then they have developed rapidly. From 0430 to 1000 UTC 21, key features of convective cell include repeated formation of secondary cell, slow horizontal cloud motion, persistence of lower brightness temperature ($-75{\sim}-65^{\circ}C$), and relatively small cloud size (${\leq}-50^{\circ}C$) of about $30,000km^2$. Radar analysis showed that this heavy rain is featured by a narrow line-shaped rainband with locally heavy rainrate (${\geq}50$ mm/hr), which is located in the south-western edge of the convective cell. However there are no distinct features in the associated synoptic-scale dynamic forcing. After 1000 UTC 21 the convective cell grows up quickly in cloud size and then is dissipated. These satellite features may be employed for very short range forecast and nowcasting of mesoscale heavy rain system.

Red Tide phenomenon which happens in the southern coast of Korea gives massive damage to the fishermen who run fish farms and thereby a lot of efforts to prevent damage are made from various angles. In particular, red tide monitoring with satellite imagery can make it possible to obtain the occurrence data of red tide throughout the whole areas of the sea, which helps provide important information for establishing the preventive plans of disasters. In this regard, this study selected the South Sea of Gyeongnam Province with a view to suggesting the monitoring results with regard to the spread and reduction of the Red Tide in the middle of the day by using the GOCI Images of COMS. With this intention, it selected the region in the South Sea of Gyeongnam Province. The study results of analysis on the GOCI image data for the years of 2013(Aug. 12) and 2014 (Sep. 11) are as follows: the pattern of the Red Tide in the region of the South Sea occurred in the southern sea area of Geoje-do in the morning. It gradually spread and showed a gradual decline after reaching the top at 1 PM. In addition, in terms of the tide movement in the middle of the day, Red Tide began in the southern sea area and moved to the west, and moved to the east again at noon. It is judged that additional study on many factors such as the characteristics of the future Red-tide organisms, tidal currents, amount of sunshine, and water temperature is needed, but it is estimated that Red Tide movement monitoring with GOCI images would provide very crucial information for predicting the spread and movement of the Red Tide to protect and manage the Red Tide disasters.
