ETRI has successfully completed and delivered to KARI the KOMPSAT Mission Control System. This system was designed to work in the conventional TT&C modulation scheme with the pre-assigned frequencies. As a way to accelerate in catching up with future TT&C technology evolutions, a preliminary study needs to be carried out to prepare for the development of a spread spectrum applicable to TT&C. A brief study was carried out to review some points to be considered in designing and implementing spread spectrum schemes to the ground TT&C system intended for a LEO spacecraft. Also a simulation and link design revisit was performed to see the operational and technical benefits with the KOMPSAT TT&C parameters. An experiment concept is proposed to test as many functions at a time once the prototype is developed. In this configuration, a ground-model TT&C transponder is connected via LAN to the ETRI-developed KOMPSAT S/W simulator and linked to the KOMPSAT TM/TC processing s/w via spread spectrum signals through a GEO satellite bent-pipe link. A satellite data relay link simulation could be carried out in this configuration.

In this paper, System performance parameters such as throughput, blocking probability and delay have been analyzed and expressed as a function of demanding traffic and service terminating probability, and we centers our discussion at particular downlink port of satellite switch which is capable of switching the individual spot beam and processing the information signals in the packet satellite communications with demand assigned multiple access technique. Delay versa throughput as a function of traffic parameters with several service terminating probability can be derived via mathematical formulation and simulation and the relative change of transmission delay was compared.

In this paper, modified power control algorithms are proposed for a satellite mobile communications system with ATC (ancillary terrestrial component). In order to increase system capacity and reduce the transmitting power of the user's equipment, we propose the modified power control scheme consisting of the modified closed-loop and open-loop power control. The modified CLPC (closed-loop power control) algorithm, combining the delay compensation algorithms and pilot diversity, is mainly applied to the ATC link in urban areas because it is more suitable to the short RTD (round-trip delay). In the case of rural areas where ATCs are not deployed or a signal is not received from ATCs, combining monitoring transmitting power equipment and OLPC (open-loop power control) algorithms using an efficient pilot diversity is mainly applied to the link between the user's equipment and the satellite. Two power control algorithms are applied equally to the boundary areas where two kinds of signals are received in order to ensure coverage continuity. The simulation results show that the modified power control scheme has good performance compared to conventional power control schemes in a GEO (geostationary earth orbit) satellite system with ATC.

A pseudolite is used as a GPS backup system, and is also used for the purpose of indoor navigation and correction information transmission. It is installed on the ground, and transmits signals that are similar to those of a GPS satellite. In addition, in recent years, studies on the improvement of positioning accuracy using the pseudorange measurement of a pseudolite have been performed. As for the effect of the time synchronization error between a pseudolite and a GPS satellite, a time synchronization error of 1 us generally induces a pseudorange error of 300 m; and to achieve meter-level positioning, ns-level time synchronization between a pseudolite and a GPS satellite is required. Therefore, for the operation of a pseudolite, a time synchronization algorithm between a GPS satellite and a pseudolite is essential. In this study, for the time synchronization of a pseudolite, "a pseudolite time synchronization method using the time source of UTC (KRIS)" and "a time synchronization method using a GPS timing receiver" were introduced; and the time synchronization performance depending on the pseudolite time source and reference time source was evaluated by designing a software-based pseudolite time synchronization performance evaluation simulation platform.
Satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (S-DMB) systems use gap fillers (GFs) to provide wireless multimedia services to non-line-of-sight locations. GFs act as repeaters, and S-DMB systems require GF networks in order to guarantee mobile reception. Each GF covers a cell or sector. In order to provide contiguous coverage of an area comprising two or more cells or sectors, multiple GFs are needed. However, when multiple GFs are situated close to each other, interference is likely to occur. As a result, in this study, we have investigated system-level environments for planning the design of interference-free GF networks in S-DMB systems. Our investigations revealed that S-DMB services are unavailable because of quality deterioration caused by interference when the delay attributable to a GF and the satellite signals exceeds ${\pm}$256 chips and the distance between the GF and its reception terminal is greater than 4.6 km. On the basis of this analysis, we conducted a field test that confirmed that the above-mentioned time delay can be controlled in such a way as to ensure high quality S-DMB services.
COsmicheskaya Sisteyama Poiska Avariynich Sudov Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (COSPAS-SARSAT) is an international communication support program to perform search and rescue (SAR) operations in emergency situations by using satellite signals relayed from a beacon. The legacy COSPAS-SARSAT was originally composed of low altitude and geostationary Earth orbit satellites; thus, a limited number of directional dish antennas was sufficient to cover the limited number of visible satellites at the local user terminal. However, the second generation COSPAS-SARSAT newly added the medium Earth orbit satellites, e.g., Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to the existing system, so that the number of visible satellites increase dramatically, and the system upgrade to cover all the visible satellites is foreseen. The additional use of planned Korea Positioning System (KPS) to existing GNSS is envisaged to provide a better performance of their SAR service. This paper presents the benefits of the additional use of KPS together with the phased array antennas at the local user terminal of the COSPAS-SARSAT. This is to effectively response to the increase of the number of visible satellites. Numerical simulation is included to evaluate the performance improvement of COSPAS-SARSAT in terms of the number of visible satellites, geometry between satellites and user, and position estimation accuracy.
An automated signal-acquisition method for the NASA's space geodesy satellite laser ranging (SGSLR) system is described as a selection of two system parameters with specified probabilities. These parameters are the correlation parameter: the minimum received pulse number for a signal-acquisition and the frame time: the minimum time for the correlation parameter. The probabilities specified are the signal-detection and false-acquisition probabilities to distinguish signals from background noise. The steps of parameter selection are finding the minimum set of values by fitting a curve and performing a graph-domain approximation. However, this selection method is inefficient, not only because of repetition of the entire process if any performance values change, such as the signal and noise count rate, but also because this method is dependent upon system specifications and environmental conditions. Moreover, computation is complicated and graph-domain approximation can introduce inaccuracy. In this study, a new method is proposed to select the parameters via a conditional equation derived from characteristics of the signal-detection and false-acquisition probabilities. The results show that this method yields better efficiency and robustness against changing performance values with simplicity and accuracy and can be easily applied to other satellite laser ranging (SLR) systems.

In this paper, we investigate the signal design of six (USA, EU, Russia, China, Japan, and India) countries for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Recently, a navigation satellite system that is capable of high-precision and reliable Positioning, Navigation, Timing (PNT) services has been developed. Prior to system design, a survey of the signal design for other GNSS systems should precede to ensure compatibility and interoperability with other GNSS. The signal design includes carrier frequency, Pseudorandom Noise (PRN) code, modulation, navigation service, etc. Specifically, GNSS is allocated L1, L2, and L5 bands, with recent additions of the L6 and S bands. GNSS uses PRN code (such as Gold, Weil, etc) to distinguish satellites that transmit signals simultaneously on the same frequency band. For modulation, both Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) and Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) have been widely used to avoid collision in the frequency spectrum, and alternating BOCs are adopted to distinguish pilot and data components. Through the survey of other GNSS' signal designs, we provide insights for guiding the design of new satellite navigation systems.

Since the broadcast message in satellite signals the security of the data is extremely poor compared to other communication technologies such as the broadcast signal. Thus, encryption of the communication satellite has become a very important issue, an analysis of the communication performance of a general service is always required. In this paper, In order to analyze the encrypted communication the turbo code in an IP-based satellite communication applies the code rate compatible punctured and The wireless channel in consideration of the actual satellite communication was constructed by placing a weight on the Rayleigh fading and the Rician fading two channels. Retransmission-based error control scheme were constructed in the best performance of H-ARQ Type-II, III scheme of a number of ways that are recently considered. we analyzed the effects of normal service against a satellite communication network The security services were configured with encryption algorithms AES, ARIA (CTR, CBC mode).

Small size and low profile antenna for mobile vehicular-top-mounted is needed in satellite communication services such as DBS, Satellite Internet and VSAT. In middle latitudes, the development of an array antenna which has the conformal, low profile and 45 degree beam tilted configuration, and has the high gain with sharp beamwidth, low sidelobe and low loss is required for Ku-band satellite communication. In this paper, in order to meet with these performances, an array antenna consisting of the vertical polarized waveguide longitudinal slots based on the leaky-wave mode of traveling wave antenna is proposed. An array antenna consisting of 16 leaky-wave elements is showing 30 dBi of gain, 4.9 degree of beamwidth, below than -20 dB of sidelobe level, 45 degree of beam tilt angle in center frequency. Feed network designed by waveguide cooperated feed shows good performance of wideband and low loss.
