An approach for quickly updating GIS building data using high resolution remotely sensed data is proposed in this paper. High resolution remotely sensed data could be aerial photographs, satellite images and airborne laser scanning data. Data from different types of sensors are integrated in building extraction. Based on the extracted buildings and the outdated GIS database, the change-detection-template can be automatically created. Then, GIS building data can be fast updated by semiautomatically processing the change-detection-temp late. It is demonstrated that this approach is quick, effective and applicable.

This paper suggests an intersection method to improve the accuracy of three-dimensional position from heterogeneous satellite stereo images, and addresses validation of the suggested method following the experimental results. The three-dimensional position is achieved by determining an intersection point of two rays that have been precisely adjusted through the sensor orientation. In case of conventional homogeneous satellite stereo images, the intersection point is generally determined as a mid-point of the shortest line that links two rays in at least square fashion. In this paper, a refined method, which determines the intersection point upon the ray adjusted at the higher resolution image, was used to improve the positioning accuracy of heterogeneous satellite images. Those heterogeneous satellite stereo pairs were constituted using two KOMPSAT-2 and QuickBird images of covering the same area. Also, the positioning results were visually compared in between the conventional intersection and the refined intersection, while the quantitative analysis was performed. The results demonstrated that the potential of refined intersection improved the positioning accuracy of heterogeneous satellite stereo pairs; especially, with a weak geometry of the heterogeneous satellite stereo, the greater effects on the accuracy improvement.

With the launch of Compact Advanced Satellite 500 series of various characteristics and the operation of KOMPSAT-3/3A, uses of high-resolution satellite images have been continuously increased. Especially, in order to provide satellite images in the form of ARD (Analysis Ready Data), various pre-processing such as geometric correction and radiometric correction have been developed. For pre-processing of high spatial satellite imagery, auxiliary information, such as solar zenith, solar azimuth and offnadir angle, should be required. However, most of the high-resolution satellite images provide the solar zenith and nadir angle for the entire image as a single variable. In this paper, the solar zenith and offnadir angle corresponding to each pixel of the image were calculated using RFM (Rational Function Model) and auxiliary information of the image, and the quality of extracted information were evaluated. In particular, for the utilization of pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle, pixel-based auxiliary data were applied in calculating the top of atmospheric reflectance, and comparative evaluation with a single constant-based top of atmospheric reflectance was performed. In the experiments using various satellite imagery, the pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle information showed a similar tendency to the auxiliary information of satellite sensor, and it was confirmed that the distortion was reduced in the calculated reflectance in the top of atmospheric reflectance.

Image segmentation technique is becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification to extract object regions of interest within images. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation to consider spectral and spatial information of high resolution satellite image. Firstly, the initial seeds were automatically selected using local variation of multi-spectral edge information. After automatic selection of significant seeds, a segmentation was achieved by applying MSRG which determines the priority of region growing using information drawn from similarity between the extracted each seed and its neighboring points. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the results obtained using the proposed method were compared with the results obtained using conventional region growing and watershed method. The quantitative comparison was done using the unsupervised objective evaluation method and the object-based classification result. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the object-based analysis of high resolution satellite images.

In this study, the epipolar images were created by both methods of resolution adjustment and piecewise approach using RPC(Rational Polynomial coefficients) and ancillary data of IKONOS-2 and SPOT-5 satellite images whose resolutions are different from each other. The stereo geometry of these two satellite images was analyzed and the RPC block modelling was accomplished for generating epipolar images. In order to evaluate the accuracy of created epipolar images, the y-parallaxes were analyzed for the specific points which were apparently identified in mountainous, plain and urban area. Also the RMSEs of the specific points were calculated using the coordinates from the epipolar stereo images and the coordinates from the block triangulation. Y-parallaxes were within one pixel and the RMSEs were within two meters for X, Y and Z each.

To use image data obtained from different sensors and different techniques, the preprocessing step that registers them in a common coordinate system is needed. For this purpose, we developed the methodology to register middle- and low-resolution satellite images automatically. Firstly, candidate matching points were extracted using the Harris and Harris-affine algorithm. Secondly, we used the correlation coefficient, normalized correlation coefficient and SIFT algorithm to detect conjugate matching points from candidates. Then, to test the feasibility of approaches, we applied the developed methodology to various kinds of satellite images and compared results. The results clearly demonstrate that the methology using the SIFT is appropriate to register these multi-resolution satellite images automatically, compared with the classical cross-correlation.

Worldview-3 satellite sensor provides panchromatic image with high-spatial resolution and 8-band multispectral images. Therefore, an image-sharpening technique, which sharpens the spatial resolution of multispectral images by using high-spatial resolution panchromatic images, is essential for various applications of Worldview-3 images based on image interpretation and processing. The existing pansharpening algorithms tend to tradeoff between spectral distortion and spatial enhancement. In this study, we applied six pansharpening algorithms to Worldview-3 satellite imagery and assessed the quality of pansharpened images qualitatively and quantitatively. We also analyzed the effects of time lag for each multispectral band during the pansharpening process. Quantitative assessment of pansharpened images was performed by comparing ERGAS (Erreur Relative Globale Adimensionnelle de Synthèse), SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper), Q-index and sCC (spatial Correlation Coefficient) based on real data set. In experiment, quantitative results obtained by MRA (Multi-Resolution Analysis)-based algorithm were better than those by the CS (Component Substitution)-based algorithm. Nevertheless, qualitative quality of spectral information was similar to each other. In addition, images obtained by the CS-based algorithm and by division of two multispectral sensors were shaper in terms of spatial quality than those obtained by the other pansharpening algorithm. Therefore, there is a need to determine a pansharpening method for Worldview-3 images for application to remote sensing data, such as spectral and spatial information-based applications.

To plan a GPS survey, they have to decide if a survey can be conducted at a specific point and time based on the predicted GPS ephemeris. In this study, to predict ephemeris, we used the repeat time of a GPS satellite. The GPS satellite repeat time was determined by analysing correlation among three-dimensional satellite coordinates provided by the 48-hour GPS ephemeris in the ultra-rapid orbits. By using the calculated repeat time and Lagrange interpolation polynomials, we predicted GPS orbits f3r seven days. As a result, the RMS of the maximum errors in the X, Y, and Z coordinates were 39.8 km 39.7 km and 19.6 km, respectively. And the maximum and average three-dimensional positional errors were 119.5 km and 48.9 km, respectively. When the maximum 3-D positioning error of 119.5 km was translated into the view angle error, the azimuth and elevation angle errors were 9.7'and 14.9', respectively.

This paper proposes the results of analysis of correlation between satellite geometry elements for an effective use of satellite images. To achieve accurate positional information, stereo images have normal range of convergence and BIE (BIsector Elevation) angles which are greatly influenced by azimuth and elevation angle of individual image. In this paper, the variations of convergence and BIE angles are estimated according to azimuth angle differences between two images and each elevation angle. The analysis provided strong support for predicting stereo geometry without complex analysis of epiploar geometry or mathematics. The experiment results showed that more than 150°, 130°, and 100° azimuth angle differences need to be constructed when elevation angle of two images is 50°, 60°, and 70°, respectively, in order to make the convergence and BIE angle within normal range. The results are expected to be fully used for various application using stereo images.

Even after applying an image registration, Very High Resolution (VHR) multi-temporal images acquired from different optical satellite sensors such as IKONOS, QuickBird, and Kompsat-2 show a local misalignment due to dissimilarities in sensor properties and acquisition conditions. As the local misalignment, also referred to as Registration Noise (RN), is likely to have a negative impact on multi-temporal information extraction, detecting and reducing the RN can improve the multi-temporal image processing performance. In this paper, an approach to fine registration between VHR multi-temporal images by considering local distribution of RN is proposed. Since the dominant RN mainly exists along boundaries of objects, we use edge information in high frequency regions to identify it. In order to validate the proposed approach, datasets are built from VHR multi-temporal images acquired by optical satellite sensors. Both qualitative and quantitative assessments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed RN-based fine registration approach compared to the manual registration.
