Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between the constitution of Sasang and the bee venom hypersensitive reaction, as well as the hypersensitive reaction occurrence ratio between males and females, for patients treated with sweet bee venom (SBV) and who had undergone an examination of the constitution of the Sasang. Methods: All 81 patients enrolled in the study were treated with SBV and underwent an examination of the constitution of Sasang from January 2010 to July 2012. We divided them into two groups for the hypersensitive reaction and no response and compared the distributions of the Sasang-constitution types for the two groups as well as the hypersensitive reaction occurrence ratio between males and females. Results: No significant differences were found between the hypersensitive-reaction group and the no-response group (p = 0.390), but the hypersensitive-reaction occurrence ratio was statistically higher in females than in males (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Hypersensitive reactions do not seem to be related to the Sasang-constitution types, but the possibility of hypersensitive reactions among females seems to be higher than it is among males.
Objectives : This study investigated stroke types, ischemic stroke subtypes, risk factors for stroke, stroke complications and Sasang constitutions in two groups divided by age according to the weakness of shingi (shenqi): younger (40 to 63 years) and older (= 64 years). Methods : 165 male patients with acute stroke within 14 days onset were included, who were admitted to Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center from October 2005 to May 2007. Stroke types, ischemic stroke subtypes, risk factors for stroke, stroke complications and Sasang constitutions in two age groups were examined. Results : Mean ages were $53.01{\pm}6.16$ and $70.95{\pm}6.37$ years for the younger 77 patients and older 88 subjects, respectively. There were no significant differences in stroke type, ischemic stroke subtypes, stroke complications and Sasang constitutions. Current smoking was more frequent in the younger age group (P= 0.005). Conclusion : Age does not seem to influence stroke types, ischemic stroke subtypes, stroke risk factors (except current smoking), stroke complications or Sasang constitutions.

Oriental Diagnosis System(ODS) is an artificial intelligence program that utilize entered diagnosis knowledge, determine patient's disease and decide right medicine. The purpose of this study is to find a correlation between pattern Identification in Korean medicine and each sasang types(Tae-Eum and So-Yang) by analyzing ODS diagnosis result. Eventually our study secure availability of using ODS program at clinical training or developing diagnosis program. Subject of this study is 50 patients who was performed Sasang constitution diagnosis (28 patients were Tae-Eum and 22 patients were So-Yang). We analyize patient's diagnosis records by using ODS program and obtained result about pattern Identification. We used SPSS statistics 23 in analyzing the differences of the scores of Eight Principle Pattern Identification, Qi-Blood Pattern Identification, and Bing-xie Pattern Identification in each Sasang types (Tae-Eum, So-Yang). The Heat and Heat-moisture scores were significantly different(p<0.05) and Qi-Blood Pattern Identification scores were not different in each Sasang types(p>0.05). And Weight was significantly different in each Sasang types(p<0.05). It is hard to generalize the result because subject of this study was not enough and had sample speciality(tinnitus patients). However, we explained correlation between pattern Identification in korean medicine and each sasang types based on quantifiable and objective evidence system. it can be used at education of korean medicine and evidence of practice diagnosis. Futhermore, there have been no studies about anaylizing correlation between pattern Identification in Korean medicine and each sasang types using ODS program. So it is worthy of being utilized at clinical evidence data of ODS program.
In Sasang constitutional medicine, both disease susceptibility and drug response are considered to be related to the characteristics of an individual's physiology and psychology: a theory which is central to traditional Korean medicine. Based on such observable characteristics, Sasang constitutional medicine classifies people into four constitutional types. Genetic studies of Sasang constitution would help reveal the inheritance patterns and models of the typological traits and, moreover, help with traditional medical diagnosis and treatment. To investigate the heritable aspect of Sasang constitution, we collected various pedigrees from South Korea. The study population has 101 pedigrees composed of 593 individuals. The determination of the Sasang constitution type of each individual was performed by doctors who diagnose the Sasang constitutional type of individuals as part of their professional practice. We calculated estimates of familial correlation and heritability. Parent-Offspring pairs showed the strongest familial correlation of Sasang constitutional type, with the correlation values of 0.21 and 0.28, followed by sibling pairs with the value ranging between 0.14 and 0.25. From the heritability analysis conducted with the Variance-Component method, the heritability of TE (Tae-Eum) type, SY (So-Yang) type, and SE (So-Eum) type were 55%, 41%, and 47%, respectively. This pattern of heritability was consistent with different set of analyses, which suggest the robustness of our result. Our result clearly shows that the Sasang constitution type is heritable, and further genetic analysis based on our result will shed light on the biological mechanism of Sasang constitution.
Objectives : The objective of this study was to examine the biopsychological traits of each Sasang type from a personality theory perspective. Methods : A review of different theories of personality is provided, in addition to review of ten previous studies on the psychological characteristics of the Sasang types. Results : 1. Similarities and differences were found between Sasang typology and Western theories of personality. 2. The prevalence of Sasang type was 28:36:36 (So-Yang:Tae-Eum:So-Eum), and the majority of the study sample were males in their twenties. 3. The Yin-Yang and Large-Small axes of Sasang typology were comparable to Eysenck's Extraversion and Neuroticism dimension. So-Yang type showed high extraversion and low neuroticism, and So-Eum type exhibited low extraversion and high neuroticism. Tae-Eum type was extravert and neurotic, and highly distinctive in such physical traits as Body Mass Index and blood triglyceride concentration. 4. We make recommendations for future studies on Sasang typology within a biopsychosocial and cognitive framework. Conclusions : This study demonstrates the possibility of Sasang typology being explicable from a cross-cultural biopsychosocial theory.
Objectives The purpose of this review was to investigate constitutional medical research on tumors and to propose information for further research. Methods The literature was investigated from Oriental medicine advanced searching integrated system, China national knowledge infrastructure, and PubMed. The searching terms were cancer, tumor, neoplasm, Sasang constitution, and so on. And studies were collected and analyzed into the three parts of distributions, treatments, and preventions. Results The distribution and type of tumors were different depending on the type of Sasang constitution. The symptoms of a tumor can occur variously in all types of diseases or patterns. Preventing tumors and cultivating health should be considered all aspects of physical, mental, and social health in the Sasang constitutional concept of securing requisite energy of minor organs. Conclusions The Sasang constitutional medicine for treating tumors should be focused on strengthening the constitutional healthy energy considering personal characteristics.
Introduction The clinical usefulness of Sasang Digestive Function Inventory (SDFI) for analyzing Sasang type-specific pathophysiological symptom was illustrated repeatedly. It was revised to enhance its validity, reliability and clinical usefulness, however its clinical studies supporting these were not sufficient yet. Methods 193 healthy university students responded once to Nepean Dyspepsia Index-Korean (NDIK), Functional Dyspepsia-Related Quality of Life (FDQOL), and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ), and twice to SDFI with four weeks of interval. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and Ponderal Index (PI) were also calculated. The 4-week test-retest reliability and correlation coefficients between NDIK, FDQOL, DEBQ, and SDFI were examined using Pearson's correlation. The significant differences between Sasang types in SDFI and its subscales were examined using ANCOVA with the age as covariate. Results The range of test-retest reliability for SDFI and its subscales was from 0.801 to 0.887. The SDFI-total correlated positively with BMI (r=0.323) and DEBQ-External Eating (r=0.433), while the SDFI-Digestion negatively with NDIK (r=-0.472) and FDQOL-total (r=-0.364). The SDFI-Habit correlated positively with BMI (r=0.310) and DEBQ-total (r=0.481), and the SDFI-Appetite with DEBQ-total (r=0.322). The SDFI-total, SDFI-Digestion, and SDFI-Habit scores of Tae-Eum type (35.6±6.25, 12.38±3.24 and 9.89±3.38, respectively) were significantly bigger than those of So-Eum type (29.84±8.31, 9.93±4.28 and 7.66±3.96). Discussion The SDFI was found to be an objective clinical measure with sufficient concurrent validity for measuring eating behavior and quality of life related to overeating and dyspepsia, and illustrated distinctive differences between Sasang types. It might be useful for the effective medical education and integrative medical practice.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in allergic reactions by type of Sasang constitution using multiple allergen simultaneous test(MAST). Methods This study was conducted using the big data of Korean medical health checkups. Subjects with a history of allergic disease, Sasang constitution type information, and MAST results were included. Subjects who had taken drugs before MAST that affected allergic reactions were excluded. We compared total immunoglobulin E(IgE) concentrations, and the number of positive antigens by Sasang constitution using analysis of variance. The presence or absence of a positive reaction and specific IgE concentration classes of 92 antigens in MAST were analyzed by Fisher's exact test or Chi-squared test. Results The distribution of Sasang constitutional types of Tae-Yang, Tae-Eum, So-Yang, and So-Eum among 147 subjects was 2.7%, 42.9%, 38.1%, and 16.3%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the total IgE concentration, the number of positive antigens, and specific IgE concentration classes for each antigen. There was a statistically significant difference in MAST-positive reaction for alder and pine antigens by type of Sasang constitution, and Tae-Eum had the most. Conclusions Tae-Eum showed a relatively strong positive reaction to a large number of antigens compared to the other types, but no statistically significant difference was observed. It is necessary to continuously investigate allergic reactions to provide evidence for the treatment of allergic diseases by Sasang constitution.
Experts of Sasang Constitution Medicine of Traditional Korean Medicine have classified stroke patients with four types of Sasang constitutions in their clinical practice and some types of Sasang constitutions have been regarded as risk factors of stroke, but this is uncertain because there were no evidences by large scale of prospective studies. The purpose of this was to study the association between strokes and Sasang constitutions. Case-control study has been conducted to the patients admitted to the research hospitals. The patients were confirmed stroke by brain MRI or CT scans and recruited from May 2003 to August 2005. The subjects who met the requirement of inclusion and exclusion criteria were 108 patients as the cases and 107 as healthy controls. Data collection has been performed by the trained specialists majoring neurologists through interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory testes. No statistical significance was obtained between the strokes and Sasang constitutions, yet Taeumin, and Soyangin types showed a trend of increase in the incidence of strokes as compared with Soeumin. To acquire more concrete data on this theme, we need further and large scale of prospective researches.
Background Abdominal obesity, a major public health concern, is related to many health problems. In addition, it is influenced by individual characteristics. We investigated sleep quality and physical activity (PA) as risk factors for abdominal obesity, according to the Sasang constitutional medicine. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 5,221 community-based participants. Sleep quality and PA were measured using structured questionnaires, and abdominal obesity was classified according to waist circumference. Sasang constitution (SC) was classified as Taeeumin (TE), Soeumin (SE), or Soyangin (SY) type, using an established SC questionnaire. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to access the association of sleep quality and PA with abdominal obesity in individuals stratified according to the SC types. Results The percentage of poor sleep quality and inactive PA was the highest in the SE type, and the higher prevalence of abdominal obesity was found in the TE type. After adjusting for variables, inactive PA was associated with abdominal obesity in the TE type (OR=1.694, 95% CI=1.42-2.021), and in the SE type, abdominal obesity was associated with poor sleep quality (OR=1.688, 95% CI=1.091-2.611) and low PA (OR=2.127, 95% CI=1.163-3.89). Moreover, the combination of these two factors were also significantly associated with abdominal obesity in the TE and SE types. Conclusion Abdominal obesity was associated with sleep quality and PA, and these results were different in each SC type. Taking various associated lifestyles and individual characteristics in consideration may contribute to better management of abdominal obesity in clinical practice.
