  • Objectives The aim was to develop a method for detecting Sasang constitution based on the ratio of facial landmarks and provide an objective and reliable tool for Sasang constitution classification. Methods Facial images, KS-15 scores, and certainty scores were collected from subjects identified by Korean Medicine Data Center. Facial ratio landmarks were detected, yielding 2279 facial ratio features. Tree-based models were trained to classify Sasang constitution, and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) analysis was employed to identify important facial features. Additionally, Body Mass Index (BMI) and personality questionnaire were incorporated as supplementary information to enhance model performance. Results Using the Tree-based models, the accuracy for classifying Taeeum, Soeum, and Soyang constitutions was 81.90%, 90.49%, and 81.90% respectively. SHAP analysis revealed important facial features, while the inclusion of BMI and personality questionnaire improved model performance. This demonstrates that facial ratio-based Sasang constitution analysis yields effective and accurate classification results. Conclusions Facial ratio-based Sasang constitution analysis provides rapid and objective results compared to traditional methods. This approach holds promise for enhancing personalized medicine in Korean traditional medicine.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the ordinary symptoms, special symptoms and Body Mass Index (BMI) according to Sasang constitution in female college students. Also, we aimed to analyze the factors affecting BMI. Methods Forty-four female college students participated in this study. Sasang Constitution was determined by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II. BMI was measured and ordinary symptoms were acqired through the questionnaire. Special symptoms was determined by Fatigue Severity Index (FSS), Premenstrual Symptom Screening Tool (PSST), ROME III, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), respectively. For statistical analysis, t-test, analysis of variance and correlation test has been used. Results There existed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms between sasang constitutions. Taeumin had higher urine frequency than soyangin, soeumin had higher gap of feces than taeumin. Taeumin had higher BMI and ROME III score than soyangin and soeumin. They showed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms according to BMI. Overweight and obese group is higher in water intake than low and normal group. Low weight and normal group is higher in gap of feces than overweight and obese group. High score group in PSST and ROME III showed high BMI than low score group. We analyzed the factors that affect BMI. BMI are highly correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, FSS, PSST, ROME III and OSDI showed high correlation with each other. Conclusion Urine frequency and gap of feces are different among sasang constitutional types. The obese group and normal group showed significant differences in water intake, gap of feces, PSST and ROME III score. It is found that factors that affecting BMI are systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These results may lead to identifying the causes and factors of obesity in female college students related to Sasang constitution.

  • The Sasang constitution typology was analyzed through SCAT2 and a specialist to examine the correlation between the Sasang constitution and dietary pattern, and the difference in BMI and food preference according to Sasang constitution was determined. The Sasang constitution typology of the subjects was classified by SCAT2 and a specialist. Seventy-four subjects were screened by SCAT2 (SC), and 18 of them were judged by the specialist (SP). The results of SCAT2 and the specialist were consistent in 13 subjects (SS). BMI and food preference among these groups were compared. The concordance rate of SCAT2 and the specialist classification was 72.2%. The BMI in SC was significantly lower in the order of Taeeumin, Soyangin, and Soeumin, but no significant difference was observed between Taeeumin and Soyangin in SP and SS. To analyze the preference of food and the constitutional suitability, the 'Yin-Yang food preference index' was developed and compared with the data classified by constitutional food according to existing ideological medical theory. As a result, there were 33 food items that matched in the SP-SS, which was more than that in the SC-SP (4 items), SC-SS (6 items), and SC-SP-SS (4 items). Twenty-four of the 33 matched food items were consistent with the existing constitutional food data. In conclusion, SCAT2 is a very useful tool for Sasang constitutional research, but for more objective research, it is recommended that subjects who show consistent results by different methods be targeted.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate of Quality of life and Mibyeong index of abnormal symptoms by Sasang constitution. Methods A total of 1,100 people were recruited into this study and were collected by Gallup Korea. Sasang constitutions were diagnosed based on KS-15 (Korean sasang constitutional diagnostic questionnaire) Questionnaire which comprised body type, personality and symptom. In addition, SF-12 (Shot form-12) questionnaire was used to evaluate the quality of life status. Mibyeong status was categorized through Mibyeong tool. Data were analyzed through one-way ANOVA to investigate the difference between quality of life and Mibyeong index on Sasang constitution. Results The PCS (physical component scale) which represents the physical health index and MCS (mental component scale) which represents mental health index showed significant differences among Sasang constitution (p<.001). In addition, The Mibyeong Index (p<.001) which represents abnormal symptom type showed significant difference for Sasang constitution. As for the Mibyeong, only pain (p=0.047) and fatigue (p=0.021) had changes for the Sasang constitution. Conclusions Quality of life and Mibyeong index vary significantly according to Sasang constitution. This results suggest the analysis of Mibyeong index by Sasang constitution could provide the setting of direction to promote public health depending on Sasang constitution.

  • Objectives: Our review aimed to summarize and evaluate evidence on the effectiveness of bee venom acupuncture (BVA) in the treatment of shoulder pain. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effectiveness of BVA on shoulder pain were searched up to October 2019 in 11 electronic databases (Medline, Embase, CENTRAL, CiNii, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, Kmbase, NDSL, RISS, OASIS). The methodological quality of the included RCTs were evaluated using Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and a meta-analysis was performed. Results: Seven studies were included in the review, and four studies were included in the meta-analysis. Comparing BVA plus conventional therapy (CT) with saline injection plus CT, it showed an effect in favor of BVA plus CT in visual analog scale (VAS) and pain rating scale (PRS) (p = 0.02, p = 0.009, respectively). Comparing BVA plus physiotherapy (PT) with saline injection plus PT, it showed that there was no significant difference in VAS and verbal rating scale (VRS) between the two groups. Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that BVA could be beneficial as an adjuvant treatment for shoulder pain.
