We measured the anti-attachment activity of allelochemical and antifouling substances using monospores from Porphyra yezoensis Ueda as an assay. Methanol or aqueous extracts ($20/{\mu}g/mL$) from 32 seaweeds were added to monospore suspensions. Methanol extracts of Corallina pilulifera, Ishige sinicola, Sargassum horneri, and Sargassum sagamianum inhibited attachment $by\;>90\%$ compared to the reference. Phenolic compounds fractionated from S. sagamianum caused the most potent inhibition. P. yezoensis monospores also showed significant sensitivity to known allelochemical and algicidal compounds.

Marine algal flora and community structure were investigated seasonally at three sites in subtidal zone of Wangdol-cho on the east coast of Korea from May 2012 to August 2013. A total of 122 species were collected and identified, including 12 green algae, 29 brown algae, and 81 red algae. Of these, 38 species were found throughout the survey period. Average seaweed biomass was 472.19-1,198.77 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in spring, 68.99-631.14 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in summer, 200.91-401.20 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in autumn, and 53.61-922.32 g wet wt. $m^{-2}$ in winter. The vertical distribution based on biomass were Grateloupia lanceolata, Acrosorium venulosum, Lomentaria catenata - Undaria pinnatifida, Dictyopteris pacifica, Sargassum horneri, Ecklonia cava - Desmarestia viridis, E. cava, S. horneri from upper to lower subtidal zone. The flora was classified into six functional groups: filamentous form (34.43%), coarsely branched form (25.41%), sheet form (24.59%), thick leather form (9.71%), crustose form (5.74%) and jointed calcareous form (0.82%). The C/P, R/P and (R+C)/P values reflecting the flora characteristics were 0.41, 2.79 and 3.21, respectively. Also, diversity index (H') and dominance index (DI) indicate that the algal community and environmental condition of Wangdol-cho is stable. We recommend that Wangdol-cho subtidal zone should be more protected from human activities such as turbulence and eutrophication in order to maintain species diversity and abundance of algae.
Particulate matter (PM) causes oxidative stress and can rapidly diffuse from the lung to the blood and accumulate in the liver when inhaled. Natural antioxidants can be used to protect against oxidative stress caused by PM. Sargassum horneri, a brown seaweed, possesses antioxidative activity and is a good source of functional foods. Therefore, this study investigated the antioxidant potential of S. horneri extract (SHE) in the livers of PM-induced asthmatic mice. PM inhalation triggered lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress, and SHE treatment attenuated malondialdehyde in the liver of mice with PM-induced asthma. Furthermore, SHE mitigated the increase in catalase activity. Importantly, SHE reduced the activity of 8-oxoguanine glycosylase (OGG1), a DNA repair enzyme. These results suggest that SHE has antioxidant potential for moderating PM-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage in the liver of asthmatic mice.

In recent years devastation on coasts worldwide has led to barren grounds resulting in the loss of the natural population of many marine organisms and macrophytes. Furthermore, fishery resources such as abalone, fish and seaweeds have been depleted (Serisawa and Ohno, 1995). Since 1980, many fishery scientists and phycologists have tried to create artificial seaweed beds using various technique in order to recover lost seaweed beds (Ohno, 1993; Choi et al., 2000). (omitted)
The summer algal flora and community of 15 uninhabited islands in Dochodo, southwestern coast of Korea, were investigated from 9 June to 16 September 2007. A total 53 species (10 green, 14 brown and 29 red algae) of marine algae were identified. Among 15 uninhabited islands, the number of species observed was the highest as 33 species at Jeongdo and Gyeongchido the least as 24 species at Hugdo and Mido. The dominant species were Enteromorpha compressa, Ishige okamurae, Gloiopeltis furcata, Ulva pertusa and Sargassum thunbergii. The algal zonation of intertidal zone was figured out by Gloiopeltis furcata, Caulacanthus okamurae – Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thungergii – Gelidium amansii, Sargassum horneri from upper to lower zone. The flora investigated could be classified into six functional groups such as coarsely branched form (39.6%), filamentous form (25.8%), sheet form (14.1%), thick leathery form (9.9%), jointed calcarious form (5.6%) and crustose form algae (4.9%).

Oxidative stress causes tissue damage and facilitates the progression of metabolic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular heart diseases, and obesity. Lipid accumulation and obesity-related complications have been observed in the presence of extensive oxidative stress. As part of an ongoing study to develop therapeutic supplements, Sargassum sp. were tested for their ability to scavenge free radicals and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as to suppress lipid accumulation. Three species, S. hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii, and Sargassum horneri, were shown to scavenge free radicals in a di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)iminoazanium (DPPH) assay. In addition, Sargassum sp. was shown to scavenge intracellular ROS and to decrease nitric oxide (NO) production in $H_2O_2$ and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced in RAW264.7 mouse macrophages, respectively. Taken together, the results suggest that Sargassum sp. possess huge potential to relieve oxidative stress and related complications, as well as lipid-induced oxidation. They indicate that S. hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii, and S. horneri are potent functional supplements that can produce beneficial health effects through antioxidant and antiobesity activities, with S. hemiphyllum being the most potent among the Sargassum sp. tested. A potential mechanism for the effect of Sargassum sp. on the suppression of lipid accumulation in differentiating 3T3-L1 mouse preadipocytes through deactivation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ${\gamma}$ (PPAR ${\gamma}$) is presented.
Experimental design for ecological restoration approach was investigated from the P' company's slag dumping area with higher pH value. The degree of pH recovery was measured by the injection of carbon dioxide from the LNG exhaust gas, and the residual carbon, for example, calcium and carbonate which can be controlled by artificial seaweed beds. The degree of adaptability from 3 algaes (Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum horneri and Ecklonia stolonifera) and uptake nutrient function of Ecklonia stolonifera chosen in the first treatment were measured in the laboratory to determine the transplanting algae in artificial seaweed beds. The higher value of pH was decreased to 7.0~8.5 by injection of LNG exhaust gas with flow rate $20\;m^3/min$. In the experiment design at laboratory, the upper part of frond of Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum horneri began to decay, and the color changed after 10 days. However, those of Ecklonia stolonifera were after 14~20 days. The uptake rate of nutrient from Ecklonia stolonifera was higher than those of other algaes, and those was similar pattern in the control (e.g. seawater); The DIN concentration uptake of Ecklonia stolonifera was $1.88\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in leachate, but $2.19\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in seawater. However, the ${PO_4}^3$-P concentration uptake was $0.18\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in leachate, but $0.31\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in seawater. These result indicated Ecklonia stolonifera uptaked these nutrients in the leachate as well as in seawater, and it may suggested for this species to transplant for constructing artificial seaweed beds.

The seasonal and vertical biomass of marine forest seaweeds were examined to select a suitable species at 12 sites of the South Sea in Korea between 2018 and 2019. The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) was also calculated in terms of biomass for six species (three kelp and three Sargassum species). A total of 16 marine forest-forming species including four kelp and 12 Sargassum species were observed at the 12 sites. The average annual seaweed biomass by season and depth ranged from 843.73-2,925.85 g wet wt. m-2 at the eastern South Sea and from 343.87-4,580.10 g wet wt. m-2 at the western South Sea. In the kelp species, the Ecklonia cava biomass was predominant, followed by E. stolonifera. The macroalgal species with the greatest biomass was Sargassum macrocarpum, followed by S. horneri. The HSI values of E. stolonifera were between 0.76-1.0 at eight sites and those of E. cava were 0.58-0.92 at four sites, indicating that E. stolonifera was more suitable than E. cava. In the HSI values of the Sargassum species, S. horneri ranged between 0.84-1.0 at all 12 sites and the S. macrocarpum values were between 0.68-0.99. The results indicate that E. cava and S. macrocarpum were the most suitable for the marine forest construction in terms of the seaweed biomass, and E. stolonifera and S. horneri in terms of the HSI values. Thus, we suggest that seaweed biomass and HSI values should be considered when choosing suitable forest-forming species.
An intertidal marine benthic algal vegetation and vertical distribution at Youngil Bay, the eastern coast of Korea was investigated to clarify the community structure and vertical distribution by quadrat method from February 2003 to January 2009. Marine algae identified from the area were 152 species; 25 green, 38 brown and 89 red algae. The dominant species were Ulva spp., Ulva pertusa, Chaetomorpha moniligera, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum horneri, S. miyabei, S. thunbergii, Gelidium amansii, Corallina pilulifera, Grateloupia elliptica, G. filicina, Prionitis cornea, Chondrus ocellatus, Chondracanthus intermedia, Acrosorium polyneurum, Chondria crassicaulis, Polysiphonia morrowii and Symphyocladia latiuscula at study sites. The vertical distribution of intertidal marine algae was divided into three distinct zones. They were characterized by Porphyra spp. and Ulva spp. at the upper, Ulva spp. and Ulva pertusa at the middle, and Sargassum spp., Gelidium amansii, Grateloupia spp., Chondrus ocellatus and Chondria crassicaulis at the lower zones, respectively. Functional form group analysis showed that coarsely branched forms comprised 44.7% of the algal community, whereas thick leathery forms, sheet forms and filamentous forms comprised 6.6-25.7%. R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P values were 2.34, 0.66 and 3.00, respectively.
Sparassis latifolia is a fungus abundant in β-glucan and amino acids and is highly valued as a medicinal mushroom. Among amino acids, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a free amino acid and has biological effects, such as increase/decrease of hypertension, improvement of cerebral blood flow, and prevention of dementia. In this study, biological elicitors were used to increase bioactive substances as a biofortification method. Sodium alginate extracted from seaweed (Sargassum horneri, Sargassum fulvellum, Sargassum fusiforme) were used as the elicitor. The levels of β-glucan and GABA in the mycelium and fruiting body grown by adding the elicitor to the medium were investigated. Addition of sodium alginate positively affected GABA production and negatively affected the β-glucan production in these fungi. Sodium alginates extracted from S. fulvellum induced the highest increase in GABA in the mycelium and fruiting bodies. Moreover, we investigated the effects of the extracts from mycelium and fruiting bodies on dendrite development in primary cortical neurons. We found that the extract from the fruiting bodies of sodium alginate treated fungi with increased levels of GABA inhibited the dendrite outgrowth of excitatory neurons, but not inhibitory neurons.
