In Hwangtohyun, meaning 'red soil pass', reddish surface mantles is widespread. Other granitic hills, exceptionally Naju and Youngam area, in Korean peninsula don't commonly have that color. This paper attempts to address this issue by CIA(chemical index of alteration). CIA data and A-CN-K diagram provide crucial insights into the changes in the relative contributions of chemical physical weathering in difference of grus regolith and saprolite. CaO and $Na_2O$ show strong depletion and $K_2O$ is progressive loss. In grus regolith, weathering trends are (sub)parallel to the CN-A join of the A-CN-K diagram, but the sample's composition plot ever closer to the A-K join in saprolite. The difference of weathering trend obtained using CIA data corresponds closely with the visual interpretation of soil color and texture.

It was aimed to promote Cyrtomium falcatum as a material for interior landscape by validating it indoor adaptability in the indoor environment, especially irrigation times, soil treatment and drainage level. Irrigation times were 2 times per week and 7 times per week. Soil treatment and drainage level were carried out drainage-peatmoss : vermiculite : perlite=1 : 1 : 1(D-PVP), peatmoss : vermiculite : perlite=1 : 1 : 1(PVP), drainage-saprolite : leaf mold=1 : 1(D-SL) and saprolite : leaf mold=1 : 1(SL). 1. Top of growth was better with irrigation 7 times per week than irrigation 2 times per week but indoor adaptability was decreased and shown yellowish green. 2. In case of soil treatment, growth was better with saprolite : leaf mold=1 : 1 but indoor growth adaptability was decreased than peatmoss : vermiculite : perlite=1 : 1 : 1. 3. Plant height and blade length were increased under non-drainage treatment but indoor adaptability, number of new fronds and number of sporophyll were decreased under drainage treatment, regardless of irrigation times and soil treatment. 4. Photosynthetic rate(Pn) was the highest in the drainage-peatmoss : vermiculite : perlite=1 : 1 : 1 treatment of irrigation 2 times per week and was the lowest in the saprolite : leaf mold=1 : 1 treatment of irrigation 7 times per week.
Herb has been categorized as a special plants from the beginning of human history and used in different medical systems in different cultures. This research has classified soil into 6 kinds that have diverse elements to see to which various kinds of savory(satureja hortensis) adapt well, experimenting from sowing to flowering for around 13 weeks, and also divided indoor conditions to get the result below. In conclusion, growth status of savory depending on the kinds of soil suggest that in indoor conditions the savory if planted in ⑤ bed soil compounded with saprolite and poultry manure grew better than any other condition. On the other hand, the growth status was bad in ① masato, ② clay, ④ bed soil mixed with saprolite, and ⑥ bed soil mixed with clay conditions. Though you can see the immediate effect of soil on the growth of savory, I'd like to reveal the details of how elements of savory operate in which kind of soil and outdoor conditions the goal of this research, in the next research.

A CIA analysis (A-CN-K and A-CNK-FM ternary diagram) indicates that, unlike the general granitic hills of the Korean Peninsula, the chemical weathering of the granitic grus (sandy regolith) in the eastern Jincheon basin is variable in geomorphic site except the Chuncheon basin. In the study area, there are three types of hills, such as; inner hills, linear isolated hills, and outer hills. The weathered mantles of the outer hills and linear isolated hills are weakly altered, whereas the inner hill, the Bonghyeon profile, shows a stronger chemical loss of the compositions approximating saprolite. There are small differences between the outer hills and linear isolated hills. The Geumwang site is considered fresh rock due to a low lever of alteration, although its sampling profile shows sandy weathering mantles. In the profiles of the Masan and Mugeuks sites, the lower part of weathering mantles has not experienced a significant level of component loss, but the upper regoliths have substantially been modified. The alteration of the hills occurs by chemical loss of CaO and Na2O. K2O exhibited little variation at all sampling suites and it has not changed into saprolite.

The lysimeter ($1.2m\;with{\times}1.6m\;length$) experiment using $^{15}N$ tracer method was conducted to investigate the influence of slopes (degree 5, 15 and 30%) and fertilizer application methods (solid application and fertigation) on the behavior of applied urea in saprolite piled highland with Chinese cabbage cultivation. NDFFs(nitrogen derived from fertilizer) in soil were increased with decreasing of degree of slope and of depth of soil. The recovery as percentage of fertilizer nitrogen by Chinese cabbage were 69.5% for solid application and 76.5% for fertigation in 5% slope, 65.0% for solid application and 70.2% for fertigation in 15% slope, and 56.1% for solid application and 62.3% for fertigation in 30% slope. There, fertigation will make great contributions to the reduction of environmental contamination by run off and to the increase of fertilizer efficiency in Chinese cabbage cultivated highland.

This experiment was conducted to possibility for leaf production of wasabi using hydroponics system. When they were grown in aeroponics and soiless culture such as saprolite and Coir, photosynthesis and transpiration rate were high and marketable yield $(leaf\;width\;11{\sim}13cm)$ showed $11.2{\sim}11.7$ of leaf number per plant and $52{\sim}53.8g$ fresh weight. In spring periods, the highest yield was 25.7 of leaf number per plant in nutrient solution of Yamasaki's solution developed in Japan in deep culture during 130 days. It showed be possibility that marketable leaves harvested one leaf every $2{\sim}4$ days though spring and fall culture periods using hydroponics controlled in environmental culture.
Elemental mobility during the weathering of granite in the Gwangju Hyangdeung area was investigated using ICP-MS analysis. It appeared that Al, Fe, Ti, K were lost from the profile, whereas Si, Ca, Na Mg, P and Mn were immobile during chemical weathering. In less weathered soil, large enrichment of K and Ti were found relative to Al, whereas other elements such as Si, Ca, Na, Mg and P are deplete. Fe content is constant throughout the weathered profiles. Amounts of Rb, Sr, Y, Cs, Pb, Th and U increased toward the surface. Nb, and Co have accumulated in the deepest parts of the weathered soil profile. These results agree with similar published studies. In addition, the analytical data shows that Ba and Ga increased, while Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni were relatively constant in this area. REE tend to increase in most samples, while LREEs, relative to Al, were enriched in the lower and upper saprolite. HREEs were enriched in the lower and upper saprolite.
Farmers in highlands in South Korea pile up 20 to 30 cm of saprolites, mostly granite- or granite-gneiss-weathered materials, on surface of arable lands every three to five years to compensate eroded soil and sometimes to discontinue soil-borne diseases. Immediate increases of infiltration and percolation rates are expected with coarse textured saprolites while soil drainage becomes poorer in a long-term. In this study, we analyzed mineralogical characteristics and micro-morphology of plow pan to investigate processes making impermeable layers. Soil samples were collected from plow pan, usually located at approximately 20 cm soil depth and at the lower part of piled saprolites, in arable lands in Hoenggye 5-ri, Daekwanryeong-myeon, Gangwon-do (N37.7, E128.7) in which saprolites were added 2, 4, and 8 years ago; saprolites were transported from similar areas. The saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased over time. Based on soil thin section pedography, quartz and feldspar accounted for a majority of minerals. The size of feldspar decreased and macropores became filled with clay or silt particles over time, which implies that macropores were packed with particles weathered from feldspar. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that intensity of feldspar decreased over time and the reverse was true for kaolinite and illite, indicating that feldspar and mica weathering induced formation of kaolinite and illite. Conclusively, deteriorated drainage by formation of impermeable layers in farms with piled saprolites was caused by accumulation of clay minerals such as kaolinite and illite in macropores; illite and kaolinite can be formed by weathering of mica and feldspar, respectively.

Reddish superficial materials in southern area of Korean Peninsula have been defined as lateritic red soil in Korea. In A-CN-K ternary plots, CaO and $Na_2O$ show similar linear distribution along a A-K line to kaolinite profile and laterite in southern Spain and Cameroon, respectively, and it means strong alteration. But $K_2O$ is weak alteration, plotting between muscovite and illite zone. Granitic reddish weathering mantles in study area show bulk distribution in center when plotted in A-CNK-Fm space, in contrast to laterite in Cameroon, plotting linearly in the middle along a A-FM line. Therefore, alteration of reddish saprolites in Southern Korea have not progressed as much as laterite. To define Reddish saprolite in southern Korean Peninsula as a lateritic red soil, more many studies are necessary.
Potassium (K) released from weathering of biotite in soils has been recognized as one of major K-sources for plant growth. Sand size biotite in a soil-saprolite-parent rock profile developed under temperate climate was studied in terms of morphological, mineralogical, and chemical changes according to depth employing petrographic and electron microscopes. X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe. Biotite showed discoloring from black to goldish white and loss paleochroism with decreasing depth. Both edge and layer weatherings of biotite showed in this study. Hexagonal holes and cracks on (001) plane of weathered biotite grains were observed and their members increased with increasing weathering degree. Biotite was altered to kaolinite with or without intermidiate products such as hydrobiotite, degraded biotite, and illite. Average chemical composition of weathered biotite changed to that of katolinite with decreasing depth: increasing concentrations of silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al) and decreasing concentrations of potassium (K), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), and taitanium (Ti).
