  • We have evaluated the structural integrity of a sandwich composite train roof which can find a lightweight, cost saving solution to large structural components for rail vehicles in design stages. The sandwich composite train roof was 11.45 meter long and 1.76 meter wide. The reinforced frame was inserted in sandwich panels to improve the structural performance of train roof structure and had the shape of hollow rectangular box. The finite-element analysis was used to calculate the stresses, deflections and natural frequencies of the sandwich composite train roof against the weight of air-condition system. The 3D sandwich FE model was introduced to simulate the hollow aluminum frames which jointed to both sides of the sandwich train roof. The results shown that the structural performance of a sandwich composite train roof under load conditions specified was proven and the use of aluminum reinforced frame was beneficial with regard to weight savings in comparison to steel reinforced frame.

  • The usage of sandwich structure is extensively increasing in lightweight protective structures due to its low density and other useful properties. Sandwich panels made of metal sheets with unfilled cellular cores are found to exhibit lower deflections by comparing to an equivalent monolithic plate of same metal and similar mass per unit density. However, the process of localized impact on solid structures involving plastic deformation, high strain rates, temperature effect, material erosion, etc. does not hold effectively as that of monolithic plate. In present work, the applications of the sandwich plate with corrugated core have been extended to develop optimized lightweight armour using foam as medium of its core by explicit finite element analysis (FEA). The mechanisms of hardened steel projectile penetration of aluminum corrugated sandwich panels filled with foams have been numerically investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). A comparative study is done for the triangular corrugated sandwich plate filled with polymeric foam and metallic foam with different densities in order to achieve the optimum penetration resistance to ballistic impact. Corrugated sandwich plates filled with metallic foams are found to be superior when compared to the polymeric one. The optimized results are then compared with that of equivalent solid and unfilled cores structure to observe the effectiveness of foam-filled corrugated sandwich plate which provides an effective resistance to ballistic response. The novel structure can be the alternative to solid aluminum plate in the applications of light weight protection system.

  • Ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with a compressive strength of 60 MPa and density of $1,450kg/m^3$ has been developed and used in the steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures. This paper investigates the structural performances of SCS sandwich composite beams with ULCC as filled material. Overlapped headed shear studs were used to provide shear and tensile bond between the face plate and the lightweight core. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element (FE) model was developed for the ultimate strength analysis of such SCS sandwich composite beams. The accuracy of the FE analysis was established by comparing the predicted results with the quasi-static tests on the SCS sandwich beams. The FE model was also applied to the nonlinear analysis on curved SCS sandwich beam and shells and the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and different concrete core including ULCC, lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC). Validations were also carried out to check the accuracy of the FE analysis on the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and curved SCS sandwich structure. Finally, recommended FE analysis procedures were given.

  • A calmodulin-dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) sandwich fusion protein was generated by insertion of calmodulin into the $\beta$-bulge region of DHFR to observe the effects of structurally constraining the calmodulin structure. The calcium binding properties of the sandwich protein were almost identical to calmodulin. Similar to calmodulin ($10.7 {\mu}M$), the sandwich protein bound four equivalents of calcium, with half saturation ($K_{0.5}$) observed at a [$Ca^{2+}$] of $8{\mu}M$. However, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) kinase activation property of the sandwich protein was lower than that of calmodulin. The sandwich protein activated NAD kinase, but to only half of the level obtained with calmodulin. The K 0.5 for both calmodulin and the sandwich protein were approximately the same (1-2 nM). Methylation analyses of the sandwich protein show that insertion of calmodulin into DHFR results in a large decrease in methylation. The $V_{max}$ observed with the sandwich protein (95 nmole/min/ml) was only 22% of the value observed with calmodulin (436 nmol/min/ml) in the presence of calcium. Addition of trimethoprim to the reaction significantly inhibited the observed methylation rate. Overall, the data suggest that the insertion of calmodulin into the DHFR structure has little effect on calcium binding by the individual lobes of calmodulin, but may constrain the lobes in a manner that results in altered interaction with the calmodulin-dependent proteins, and severely perturbed the methyltransferase recognition site.

  • One of the most important design criteria in underground structure is to design lightweight protective layers to resist significant blast loads. Sandwich blast resistant panels are commonly used to protect underground structures. The front face of the sandwich panel is designed to resist the blast load and the core is designed to mitigate the blast energy from reaching the back panel. The design is to allow the sandwich panel to be repaired efficiently. Hence, the underground structure can be used under repeated blast loads. In this study, a novel sandwich panel, named RC panel - Helical springs- RC panel (RHR) sandwich panel, which consists of normal strength reinforced concrete (RC) panels at the front and the back and steel compression helical springs in the middle, is proposed. In this study, a detailed 3D nonlinear numerical analysis is proposed using the nonlinear finite element software, AUTODYN. The accuracy of the blast load and RHR Sandwich panel modelling are validated using available experimental results. The results show that the proposed finite element model can be used efficiently and effectively to simulate the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of the newly proposed RHR sandwich panels under different ranges of free air blast loads. Detailed parameter study is then conducted using the validated finite element model. The results show that the newly proposed RHR sandwich panel can be used as a reliable and effective lightweight protective layer for underground structures.

  • In this study, low velocity impact analysis on composite sandwich structure was performed. Sandwich structure configuration is made of Carbon-Epoxy face sheets and foam cores. For validating study, the results of an experimental and a finite element method analysis were compared previously. From the finite element method analysis results of sandwich panel, it was confirmed that the results of analysis was reasonable. Impactor velocity to initiate damage was estimated, and in order to investigate the damage at the predicted velocity, impact analysis using finite element method was performed. According to the impact analysis results of sandwich panel, it was confirmed that the damage was generated at the estimated impact velocity. Finally, The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement.

  • This paper is a study of the central structural unit model of the sandwich core structure. The applied model is based on the honeycomb structure formed by the truss, the H-shaped honeycomb structure formed by adding the truss of H shape to the space of the center portion, and the honeycomb structure formed by the plate. Applied material property is AISI 304 stainless steel, which has cost effectiveness and easy to get near place. The truss diameter of the model is three different type: 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. ABAQUS software is obtained to do the analysis and applied test is quasi-static loading. Boundary conditions for the analysis are that vertical direction loading at top place without any rotation and bottom surface is fixed. The test results show that the H-truss model has the highest stiffness and yield strength. Therefore, it is hoped that more and more researching for the development of a unit model in sandwich core structure has been investigating and that the developed sandwich core model can be applied into various industrial fields such as mechanical or aerospace industries.

  • In machine tool design, fast traversing cannot be achieved without reducing mass of the moving part. Honeycomb sandwich panel is extremely lightweight, and relatively rigid at the same time. We can reduce much weight when we selectively utilize honeycomb sandwich panels as stiffeners on machine tool structures. Feasibility of reducing weight is studied using a beam structure with both ends fixed.

  • Sandwich plate structure is widely used in various fields of industry due to its excellent strength and stiffness compared with weight. In this paper, the mechanical behavior of sandwich plate structure with honeycomb core considering buckling is investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to evaluate strength and stiffness of the plate structure with critical stress, natural frequency, and mode shapes. The results of this investigation are obtained from detailed finite element analysis for various parameters, such as length, height ratio, and thickness ratio of honeycomb core.
