  • The cautious blasting works had been used with emulsion explosion electric M /S delay caps. Drill depth was from 3m to 6m with Crawler Drill 70mm on the calcalious sand stone (soft-moderate-semi hard Rock) . The total numbers of feet blast were 88. Scale distance were induces 15.52-60.32. It was applied to Propagation Law in blasting vibration as follows .Propagtion Law in Blasting Vibration V=k(D/W/sup b/)/sup n/ where V : Peak partical velocity(cm/sec) D : Distance between explosion and recording sites(m) W ; Maximum Charge per delay -period of eight milliseconds or more(Kg) K : Ground transmission constant, empirically determind on the Rocks, Explosive and drilling pattern ets. b : Charge exponents n : Reduced exponents Where the quantity D/W/sup b/ is known as the Scale distance. Above equation is worked by the U.S Bureau of Mines to determine peak particle velocity. The propagation Law can be catagrorized in three groups. Cabic root Scaling charge per delay Square root Scaling of charge per delay Site-specific Scaling of charge delay Charge and reduction exponents carried out by multiple regressional analysis. It's divided into under loom and over loom distance because the frequency is varified by the distance from blast site. Empirical equation of cautious blasting vibration is as follows. Over 30m--under 100m----V=41(D/ W)/sup -1.41/-----A Over l00m---------V=121(D/ W)/sup -1.56/-----B K value on the above equation has to be more specified for furthur understand about the effect of explosives. • In reclaimed loose sandy layer with dredged soil, liquefaction by the small scale earthquake coud be occurred easily. A study has been carried out to investigate the Liquefaction characteristic on Saemangeum dredged sandy soil, and compared with other results from the literature investigation. A series of undrained cyclic triaxial compression tests were performed on dredged sandy soil of Seamangeum area. The tests were performed at the three different initial relative densities(namely 30%, 50%, 70%), different cyclic stress ratio and different consolidation stress condition. The results of this study showed that cyclic stresses (${\sigma}_d$) increased linearly with increase of consolidation ratio, but the stress ratios (${\sigma}_d/2{\sigma}^{\prime}{_c}$) were almost same. The stress ratios were increased almost linearly with increase of relative density. Compared with other sandy soil, Saemangeum dredged sandy soil showed relatively weak liquifaction characteristics.

  • This study was made to find several significant relations among various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance. The alluvial clay samples were taken at the Daebul Reclaimed Tideland in Samhomyeon, Yeongamgun, Jeonranamdo. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1.Most samples belong to medium or high plastic, inorganic, silty clay(clay contents;32-64%, silt contents; 36-68%, sand contents; 0-3%). The specific gravities range from 2.70 to 2.73, the unit weights from 1.45 to 1. 75g/cm$^3$, the natural moisture contents from 45 to 77%, the liquid limits from 32 to 56%. It is certain that the foundation is weak because the natural moisture contents are much higher than the liquid limits. 2.It is known from the shear tests that the unconfined compression strenghs vary from 0.09 to 0. 38kg/cm2, the cohesions from 0.05 to 0. 21kg/cm2, the internal friction angles from 0 to 3˚. 3.The consolidation tests show that the initial void ratios range from 1.25 to 2.28, the compression indeices from 0.43 to 0.84, the preconsolidation loads from 0.21 to 0.74kg/cm$^2$. 4.Cone penetration resistances are usually less than 5kg/cm$^2$ from ground surface to the depth of about 8m, and from S to l0kg/cm$^2$ in the layer below about 8m to hard layer. 5.The cohesion and cone penetration resistance are in proportion to the depth of soil layer. 6.The correlations between various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance for the alluvial clay samples are as follows; a) Wn=0.944C+ l2.733 (r=0.829) b) LL=0. 728Cy+6. 991 (r=0. 873) c) PI=0.659Cy-8.168 (r=0.860) d) rt=0. 0077(272-Wn) =2.092-0. 0077Wn (r=0. 859) e) 60=0. 035wn-0 447 (r=0. 893) f) C=0.380qw+0.031 (r=0.816) g) qu=0.0707qc+0.029 (r=0.810) h) C=0.018Z+0.055 (r=O.802) I) qc=0. 415Z+1, 438 (r=0. 943)

  • Jeju Island is composed of irregular volcanic rock layers formed by several volcanic activities. Since structure such as the offshore wind turbine has to support considerably large over turning moment due to long distance from foundation to load point and relatively large horizontal load. Pile foundations are needed to economically support such structure even in the case of rock layer. Therefore, in this study, mechanical performances are estimated by mixing ratio of water, cement, and sand to figure out optimal mixing ration of filling material for pile penetrated to rocky layers, and outcomes of this study are compared and analyzed with results of other researches. In the same conditions, mechanical performances of the mortar (S/(S+C)=20~40%) are better than those of cement paste and soil cement. On the basis of major outcome of this study, appropriate range of mixing and a strengthening model are suggested.

  • Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil. The granular compaction group piles also accelerate the consolidation of the soft ground and prevent the liquefaction caused by earthquake using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful method in Korea. In the present study, the optimum locations of granular compaction group piles using genetic algorithm are proposed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of the group piles. Also, the optimum design for total weight of granular compaction group piles was carried out in consideration of the economical efficiency and parametric studies were performed to examine the effects of parameters at the design of granular compaction group piles.

  • It is worthwhile to verify the vertical stress distribution in soil mass for rigorous design of foundation. A series of laboratory model tests were performed to investigate the Boussinesq's theory on vertical stress increment in sandy soil mass caused by surface loading. The test results were also compared with Boussinesq's theoretical values. The Boussinesq's theoretical values were always smaller than test results under the footing regardless of depth. Outside of the footing the values were larger than the measured stress at the depth of just footing width. The theory and the test showed similar results when the depth reached two and three times the footing width. The vertical stress decreased as the applied load increased. These trends were confirmed to be valid for the considered range of the relative density of sand and/or the width of footing. More accurate values can be acquired by correcting the theoretical values using these results when Boussinesq's theory is used.

  • This is an experimental study to investigate the behaviour of piled raft system in different types of sandy soil. A small scale "prototype" model was tested in a sand box with load applied to the foundation through a compression jack and measured by means of load cell. The settlement was measured at the raft by means of dial gauges, three strain gauges were attached on piles to measure the strains and calculate the load carried by each pile in the group. Nine configurations of group ($1{\times}2$, $1{\times}3$, $1{\times}4$, $2{\times}2$, $2{\times}3$, $2{\times}4$, $3{\times}3$, $3{\times}4$ and $4{\times}4$) were tested in the laboratory as a free standing pile group (the raft not in contact with the soil) and as a piled raft (the raft in contact with the soil), in addition to tests for raft (unpiled) with different sizes. It is found that when the number of piles within the group is small (less than 4), there is no evident contribution of the raft to the load carrying capacity. The failure load for a piled raft consisting of 9 piles is approximately 100% greater than free standing pile group containing the same number of piles. This difference increases to about 4 times for 16 pile group. The piles work as settlement reducers effectively when the number of piles is greater than 6 than when the number of piles is less than 6. The settlement can be increased by about 8 times in ($1{\times}2$) free standing pile group compared to the piled raft of the same size. The effect of piled raft in reducing the settlement vanishes when the number of piles exceeds 6.

  • The soil does not only serve as a medium for plant growth but also for engineering construction purposes. It is very weak in tension, very strong in compression and fails only by shearing. The behaviour of the soil under any form of loading and the interactions of the earth materials during and after any engineering construction work has a major influence on the success, economy and the safety of the work. Soils and their management have therefore become a broad social concern. A limitless variety of soil materials are encountered in both agronomy and engineering problems, varying from hard, dense, large pieces of rock through gravel, sand, silt and clay to organic deposits of soft compressible peat. All these materials may occur over a range of physical properties, such as water contents, texture, bulk density and strength of soils. Therefore, to deal properly with soils and soil materials in any case requires knowledge and understanding of these physical properties. The desired value of bulk density varies with the degree of stability required in construction. Bulk density is also used as an indicator of problems of root penetration, soil aeration and also water infiltration. This property is also used in foundation engineering problems. While not conforming to standard test procedures, this work attempts to add to the basic information on such important soil parameters as water content, bulk density.

  • This paper deals with a development of combined seismic methods, based on the application of Televiewer and seismic tomography, for the quantitative assessment of reclaimed body or dam at seashores in our county. The underground structure of reclaimed dam is very complex, mainly due to the unexpected exchange of rock fragments with the marine silty mud in conjunction with S.C.P. (Sand Compaction Pile) foundation, so that for several reasons only the use of Televiewer and seismic tomography for general application might not lead to a desirable resolution. Kinds of upgraded measuring and evaluation techniques for that are needed. For examples, a novel strategy for capturing the returning impulses from the outer side of casing plastic pipe is desired to be developed. For the tomograhy, one should be being more focussed on the study of raw data based on the wave propagation theory. In this paper, it is shown that such multidisciplinary approaches can be, by attempting to compare and jointly interpret the results from two methods, much efficient for understanding the reclaimed dam structure.

  • This study analyzes behavior of bearing capacity of open-ended pipe pile from laboratory experiment results. Unlike the conventional pipe piles, cone penetration is implemented into the inside of the pipe pile. During the cone penetration, cone driving energy helps densification of plugged soils and soils below the pile end. Sand pluviator was used to obtain homogeneous soil layers. Two kinds of piles with different pile outer surface roughness were prepared, and two different drop heights of pile driving were applied. Eight experimental cases varying pile outer surface roughness, pile driving energy for conventional and cone penetration implemented piles were conducted. From the experiments, ultimate load of the pile increased approximately by 70% for increased pile driving height, and it increased by 21% for rougher surface pile. When cone penetration is implemented, the ultimate load increased by 40% in average.
