  • The purpose of this study is to explore a weekly life of Korean high school students, especially focused on their activities, locations, and flow. The data were collected from 116 high school students by the Experiential Sampling Method, employing a cellular-phone as a signaling device. Students reported, in response to the 6964 random signals, that 43.4% of their time was spent for social/leisure activities. An additional 31% percent of time was used for productive activities and the rest of times belonged to maintenance activities. When engaged in productive activities, they usually reported anxiety, while they felt bored for social/leisure activities and flow for maintenance activities. The most pervasive context of their lives was school (42.8%), followed by home (33.3%), public space (24.6%), and educational institutes (9.2%). In general, they experienced flow for the most of the locations, except educational settings in which they felt anxiety. The flow for productive activities varied by gender, pending on where they had productive activities, while others did not show any significant differences in the activity flow by locations.

  • In direct vehicle teleoperation, a human operator drives a vehicle at a distance through a pair of master and slave device. However, if there is time delay, it is difficult to remotely drive the vehicle due to slow response. In order to address this problem, we introduced a novel methodology of shared vehicle teleoperation using a virtual driving interface. The methodology was developed with four components: 1) virtual driving environment, 2) interface for virtual driving environment, 3) path generator based on virtual driving trajectory, 4) path following controller. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach in simple and cluttered driving environment as well. In the experiments, we compared two sampling methods, fixed sampling time and user defined instant, and finally merged method showed best remote driving performance in term of completion time and number of collision.

  • Wildlife is a bio-indicator of environmental pollution by antimicrobial resistant bacteria or genes, however, there is no information on antimicrobial resistance in wildlife-origin bacteria. This study aimed to investigate the normal microbiota of staphylococci and their antimicrobial resistance in wildlife that did not take any antimicrobials. After sampling and bacterial isolation/identification, antimicrobial resistance profiles were examined by broth microdilution test, Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion test and mecA genetargeted PCR. Of 90 isolates from wildlife, 83 were coagulase-negative staphylococci while only 7 were coagulase-positive staphylococci. Methicillin-resistance was found in 63 (70%) isolates and 35 of 90 (38.9%) isolates were multidrug-resistant staphylococci. When considering that all of the animals did not take any medication or contacted any medical device before the sampling, the results indicate significantly high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in wild environments. Further study would be necessary to investigate the transmission route of antimicrobial resistance.

  • A heart diagnosis system adopts Superconducting Quantum Interface Device(SQUD) sensors for precise MCG(MagnetoCardioGram) signal acquisitions. Such system needs to deal with hundreds of sensors, requiring fast signal sampling md precise analog-to-digital conversions(ADC). Our development of hardware board, processing 64-channel 12-bit in 1 ks/s speed, is built by using 8-channel ADC chips, 8-bit microprocessors, SPI interfaces, and specially designed parallel data transfers between microprocessors to meet the 1ks/s, i.e. 1 mili-second sampling interval. We extend the design into 256-channel hardware and analyze the speed .using the measured data from the 64-channel hardware. Since our design exploits full parallel processing, Assembly level coding, and NOP(No Operation) instruction for timing control, the design provides expandability and lowest system timing margin. Our result concludes that the data collection with 256-channel analog input signals can be done in 201.5us time-interval which is much shorter than the required 1 mili-second period.

  • In this study, a new PM (particulate matter) sampler was developed and fabricated to collect fine particles in the atmosphere, and laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of the sampler. The PM sampler, which was based on impingers, employed an aerosol condensation system as a PM magnifier to improve its collection efficiencies. Sodium chloride, ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate aerosols were used as test particles, because these components are rich in ambient aerosols. As a result, it was found that the collection efficiency of the novel PM sampler was very high. Thus, it is believed that the PM sampler is an effective device for sampling fine particles. In addition, it was demonstrated that this work could contribute to the collection or removal of fine particles and be applied to the semicontinuous sampling of ambient aerosols for chemical composition analysis.

  • The surface evenness and texture are closely related with the irregularity of yam thickness. Besides, yam thickness variation has an important role to influence the yam performance and the textile process efficiency. Thus, the information not only on the yam thickness, but also on the short- term irregular characteristics that have not been known before is required for enhancing the qualities of textile products. This paper reports the results of a study about the yam thickness and its variation for various types of yam on the basis of a new measurement system applying a laser slit beam as a light source. The new method delivers effective information on the irregularity. The analysis of the measured signal confirms that the visual shade created by the yam doubling and twisting can be measured and the yam thickness characteristics can be represented by correlograms. Depending on yam types, correlograms have different shapes and can be approximated to an exponentially decaying function with or without fluctuating magnitude. In addition, the effective information on the yam irregularity can be influenced by the sampling length interval of the measuring device used for tests.

  • A novel sampling method of the headspace poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) mini-disk extraction (HS-PDE) was developed, optimized, validated and applied for the GC/MS analysis of spices flavors. A prototype PDMS mini-disk (8 mm outer diameter, 0.157 mm thickness, 9.4 mg weight) has been designed and fabricated as a sorption device. The technique uses a small PDMS mini-disk and very small volume of organic solvent and less sample size than the solvent extraction. This new HS-PDE method is very simple to use, inexpensive, rapid, requires less labor. Linearities of calibration curves for ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, limonene and ${\gamma}$-terpinene by HS-PDE combined with GC/MS were excellent having $r^2$ values greater than 0.99 at the dynamic range of 6.06~3500 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) showed very low values. This method exhibited good precision and accuracy. The overall extraction efficiency of this method was evaluated by using partition coefficients ($K_p$) and concentration factors (CF) for several characteristic components from nutmeg and mace. Partition coefficients were in the range from $2.04{\times}10^4$ to $4.42{\times}10^5$, while CF values were 0.88-15.03. HS-PDE was applied successfully for the analysis of flavors compositions from nutmeg, mace and cumin. The HS-PDE method is a very promising sampling technique for the characterization of volatile flavors.

  • Recently, flash memory has been in a great demand from embedded system sectors for storage devices. However, program/erase (P/E) cycles per block are limited on flash memory. For the limited number of P/E cycles, many wear leveling techniques are studied. They prolonged the life time of flash memory using information tables. As one of the techniques, block erase table (BET) method using a bit array table was studied for embedded devices. However, it has a disadvantage in that performance of wear leveling is sharply low, when the consumption of memory is reduced. To solve this problem, we propose a novel wear leveling technique using Sampling-based Block Erase Table (SBET). SBET relates one bit of the bit array table to each block by using exclusive OR operation with round robin function. Accordingly, SBET enhances accuracy of cold block information and can prevent to decrease the performance of wear leveling. In our experiment, SBET prolongs life time of flash memory by up to 88%, compared with previous techniques which use a bit array table.
