  • This paper presents a dynamic simulation algorithm for studying the effect of Unified Power Flow Controller(UPFC) on the low frequency power system oscillations and transient stability studies. The algorithm is a Newton-type one and gives a fast convergence characteristics. The algorithm is applied to inter-area power oscillation damping regulator design of a sample two-area power system. The results show that UPFC is very effective for damping inter-area oscillations.

  • We constructed a high-$T_c$ scanning SQUID microscope (SSM) operating in the liquid nitrogen. We used a washer-type YBCO SQUID with inner and outer dimensions of $12{\mu}m$ and $36{\mu}m$, respectively, which was grown on the $SrTiO^3$ bicrystal substrate. The sample, rather than SQUID, was scanned using two stepping motors. We also developed readout electronics, stepping motor controller, and the software for system control and data display. We took images of various samples using our SSM and found that the spatial resolution is about $40{\mu}m$ and noise level is lower than $10^{-7}T/{\surd}Hz$ at 100 Hz and higher at lower frequencies. The noise level was much higher than that of a typical SQUID due to the other coupling from the electric parts. We present a simple argument on the inductive coupling between the sample and the SQUID which should be under-stood for the proper interpretation of the obtained images. By comparing the measured data with the simulation results the gap between the SQUID and the sample is estimated to be $40{\mu}m$.

  • TDS(Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy)system, for diagnosis of CRT manufacturing process, was designed and constructed. Outgassings and thermal desorptions from the part or materials of CRT can be measured and analysed with this system at various temperatures. The system is consisted of 3 parts, vacuum chamber and pumping system with variable conductance, sample heating stages & their controller, and outgassing measurement devices, like as ion gauge or quadrupole mass spectrometer. The ultimate pressure of the system was under $1{\times}10^{-7}$ Pa. With the variable conductance system, the effective pumping speed of the chamber could be controlled from sub l/s to 100 l/s. The effective pumping speed values were determined by dynamic flow measurement principle. The temperatures and ramp rate of sample were controlled by tungsten heater and PID controller up to 600℃ within ±1℃ difference to setting value. Ion gauge & QMS were calibrated for quantitative measurements. Some examples of TDS measurement data and application on the CRT process analysis were shown.

Robust Sliding Mode Controller Design for the Line-of-Sight Stabilization

  • The line-of-sight (LOS) stabilization system is a precision electro-mechanical gimbals assembly for rejecting vibration to isolate the load from its environment and point toward the target in a desired direction. This paper describes the design of gimbals system to reject the disturbance and to improve stabilization. To generate movement commands for the actuators in the stabilization system, the control system uses a sensor of angular rotation. The controller is a DSP with transducer and actuator interfaces. Unknown parameters of the gimbals are estimated using the signal compression method. The cross-correlation coefficient between the impulse response from the assumed model and the one from model of the gimbals is used to obtain the better estimation. And SMCPE (sliding mode control with perturbation estimation) is used to control the gimbals. SMCPE provides robustness of the control against the modeling deficiencies and unknown disturbances. In order to compare the performance of SMCPE with the classical SMC, a sample test result is presented.

  • In this paper, vibration reduction techniques of a voice coil motor (VCM) actuator are presented for AFM imaging system. The damping coefficient of the actuator driven by VCM with a flexure hinge is quite low and it cause the about 30dB peak amplitude response at the resonance frequency. To decrease this peak response, we design and apply elliptical band-stop filters to xy and z axis VCM actuator. Frequency response of each actuator with filter is measured to verify the effect of the filters. As a sensor, capacitive sensor is used. Vibration reduction rate of the xy actuator with the filter is also measured while real AFM scanning condition. As another method, closed loop control with the capacitive sensor is applied to the xy axis actuator to add an electrical damping effect and vibration reduction rate measured. These vibration reduction rates with each method are compared. In the case of z axis actuator, the frequency response of force (gap) control loop is measured. For comparison, the frequency response using a conventional PID controller is also obtained. Finally, the AFM image of a standard grid sample is measured with the designed controller to analyze the effect in the AFM imaging.

A Study on the Actual Conditions of Indoor Air Quality of Underground Dwellings and the Automatic Ventilating Fan Operated by CO2 Controller and Timer (지하주거의 실내공기환경 실태조사와 CO2 조절기 및 타이머에 의한 환기팬 자동운전에 관한 연구)

  • The rapid urbanization after 1970s caused the shortage of dwellings in urban areas. As the result, the underground dwellings were developed to compensate for the insufficient dwelling spaces. While the underground dwellings have some advantage in the respect of thermal and acoustic environment, they usually have the basic problems in the indoor air quality because of the lack of natural ventilation through small window areas. The purpose of this study is to investigate and to improve the indoor air quality of underground dwellings. Thirty Units in Seoul and Gyung-Gi Province were investigated into the indoor environmental conditions. For the purpose of the improvement of their indoor air quality, Automatically-operated ventilating fan was installed in a sample unit which has worst indoor environmental condition. Then the indoor air quality was monitored when it was operated by $CO_2$ control system and timer. Finally economic feasibility study was made considering the effect of the improvement of indoor air quality. The extra cost for installing timer could be paid back only in 10 months, so timer-installed automatic fan is recommended to improve the indoor air quality of underground dwellings.

The Maximum Torque/Efficiency of SRM Driving for Self-Tuning Control (자기동조 제어에 의한 SRM의 최대 토크/효율 운전)

  • The control of the SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) is usually based on the non-linear inductance profiles with positions. So determination of optimal switching angle is very different. we present self-tuning control of SRM for maximum torque and efficiency with phase current and shaft position sensor During the sample time, micro-controller checks the number of pre-checked pulse. After micro-controller calculates between two data, it move forward or backward turn-off angle. When the turn-off angle is fixed optimal turn-off angle, turn-on angle moves forward or backward by a step using self-tuning control method. And then, optimal turn-off angle is searched once again. As such a repeating process, turn-on/off angle is moves automatically to obtain the maximum torque and efficiency. The experimental results are presented to validate the self-tuning algorithm.

  • The new filed of learning control develops controllers that learn to improve their performance at executing a given task , based on experience performing this specific task. In a previous work[6], authors presented a theory of indirect learning control based on use of indirect adaptive control concepts employing simultaneous identification and control. This paper develops improved indirect learning control algorithms, and studies the use of such controller indecentralized systems. The original motivation of the learning control field was learning in robots doing repetitive tasks such as on an asssembly line. This paper starts with decentralized discrete time systems. and progresses to the robot application, modeling the robot as a time varying linear system in the neighborhood of the nominal trajectory, and using the usual robot controllers that are decentralized, treating each link as if it is independent of any coupling with other links. The resultof the paper is to show that stability of the indirect learning controllers for all subsystems when the coupling between subsystems is turned off, assures convergence to zero tracking error of the decentralized indirect learning control of the coupled system, provided that the sample tie in the digital learning controller is sufficiently short.

PaperMill - A Layered Manufacturing System Using Lamination and Micro Endmill (PaperMill - 박막과 마이크로 엔드밀을 사용한 적층조형 시스템)

  • A new Layered Manufacturing(LM) system, named PaperMill, is developed applying micro milling technology. A micro endmill(127 11m in diameter) is introduced as the cutter of build material. The selected build material for this system is an adhesive-coated paper roll which provides advantages such as good bonding between layers, machinability, and low material cost. A 3-axis CNC controller and three step-motors are used for the movement of X-Y-Z table of the system. For simplicity of the control of mechanism, the control system for feeding the paper roll is uncoupled from CNC controller. Two code converters are developed for the toolpath generation of the new LM system. The NC converter generates a set of NC codes for PaperMill using commercial CAM software while the SML converter generates an NC code from Quickslice's SML format. The NC codes generated from the converters consist of a series of profile data and trigger code for paper feeding. Two sample gears were fabricated to prove the concept of the system, which shown that the dimensional errors of the fabricated gears is under 3.4 percent.
