  • Objective : I want to examine the antimicrobial activity of Samhwangsasimtang against pseudomonas aeruginosa 38 isolated from an acne patient. Method : Antimicrobial activity was assayed through the hot water extract from Samhwangsasimtang against pseudomonas aeruginosa 38 isolated from an acne patient. Result : The size of inhibition zone of Samhwangsasimtang extract was $12.6\;{\pm}\;0.04\;mm$. The optimal pH and temperature for the growth of isolated pseudomonas aeruginosa 38 were 6.0 and $37^{\circ}C$, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Samhwangsasimtang extract was $10\;{\pm}\;0.06\;{\mu\ell}$ and the antimicrobial activity of Samhwangsasimtang extract was not destroyed by the heat ($121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min) and not affected by pH. Conclusion : Reviewing this experimental result, it appeared that Samhwangsasimtang had efficacy against pseudomonas aeruginosa 38 isolated from an acne patient.

  • Effects of Samhwangsasimtang aqua-acupuncture at gansoo($B_{18}$) and chungwan($CV_{12}$) on antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant were investigated in rat fed high fat diet. Concentrations of triglyceride, free fatty acids, lipoprotein and glucose in plasma showed a tendency to decrease in the aqua-acupuncture groups. In plasma lipid composition, total cholesterol and LDL- cholesterol showed a tendency to decrease in aqua-acupuncture groups, however the values of HDL-cholesterol showed no significantly different in the treatment groups. Concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) in plasma and liver showed a low in the aqua-acupuncture groups. The values of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and catalase(CAT) activity showed a tendency to increase in aqua-acupuncture groups. However the values of superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity showed no significantly different in the treatment groups.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 56 herbal formulae covered by the National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) on dementia-related biomarkers and neuronal cell changes. Methods: The 56 herbal formulae were extracted with 70% ethanol at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The antioxidant properties was measured by radical scavenging assay using ABTS+ radical. The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was tested by Ellman's assay and $amyloid-{\beta}$ ($A{\beta}$) aggregation was determined using fluorescence method. To estimate the inhibitory effects of herbal formulae on neuronal cell death and inflammation using HT22 hippocampal cells and BV-2 microglia, respectively. Results: Among the 56 herbal formulae, Dangguiyukhwangtang, Banhasasimtang, Samhwangsasimtang, Cheongwiesan, Hwangryunhaedoktang, Banhabaekchulchunmatang, Jaeumganghwatang, Cheongseoikgitang, and Hoechunyanggyuksan has a significant inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Doinseunggitang and Samhwangsasimtang exerted the effect on the inhibition of $amyloid-{\beta}$ ($A{\beta}$) aggregation. Additionally, 10 herbal formulae affected AChE and $A{\beta}$ aggregation revealed antioxidant activity as well as neuroprotective and anti-neuroinflammation effects in neuronal cell lines. Conclusions: 10 herbal formulae that have been shown to be effective against the major dementia markers have been shown to have antioxidant activity, neuronal cell protection and inhibition of brain inflammation. Further investigation of these herbal formulae will need to be validated in dementia animal models.

  • Objectives: To expand and provide information on the efficacy of herbal medicines, anti-obesity effects were evaluated. In many studies, plant-derived components with anti-obesity efficacies have been investigated for their potential inhibitory effects on 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-obesity effects of 65 herbal medicine in 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells. Methods: Preferentially, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with 65 herbal medicines (500 ㎍/mL) during differentiation for 8 days. Next, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with selected herbal medicines at concentrations ranging from 50 to 200 ㎍/mL during differentiation for 8 days. The accumulation of lipid droplets was determined by Oil Red O staining. The expressions of genes related to adipogenesis were measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses. Results: Among the 65 kinds of herbal medicines, 13 herbal medicines that been shown to be effective against the accumulation of lipid droplets were selected. Finally, selected Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang showed inhibitory activity on adipocyte differentiation at 3T3-L1 preadipocytes without affecting cell toxicity. In addition, Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang significantly reduced the expression levels of several adipocyte marker genes including peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-α. Conclusions : These results suggest that the ability of Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasimtang has inhibited overall adipogenesis and lipid accumulation in the 3T3-L1 cells. Banhasasim-tang and Samhwangsasim-tang may be a promising medicine for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders.
