  • The formation of iron oxide hydroxide in a ferrous sulfate was studied in different contents of iron in the solution at a temperature range of 90 to $100^{\circ}C$ under 1${\sim}$3 atmospheres. The Mohr's salt thus formed was hydrolyzed under 1 to 3 atmospheres, in 14 to 72 g/l of iron content in the solution pH 3 or 6 for two hours at 90 to $100^{\circ}C$. The results obtained was as follows; 1) In Mohr's salt solution, as the iron content was increased, with decreasing the concentration of hydrogen ion, the yield of iron oxide hydroxide was gradually increased. 2) When iron content in Mohr's salt solution was 42.81 g/l, 91.5% of iron was recovered in the form of $\alpha$-goethite similar to yellow grade of natural goethite. 3) When $\alpha$-goethite obtained was calcined of $500^{\circ}C$, it was turned into ${\alpha}$-ferric oxide with a redish brown colour.

  • A series of hydrophobically associating fluorinated amphiphilic polyacrylamide copolymers with remarkably high heat resistance and salt tolerance were synthesized by free radical micellar copolymerization, using acrylamide (AM) and sodium 2-acrylamido-tetradecane sulfonate ($AMC_{14}S$) as amphiphilic monomers, and 2-(perfluorooctyl) ethyl acrylate (PFHEA) as hydrophobic monomer. The structure of the terpolymer was characterized by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{19}F$ NMR. The solution properties of the terpolymers were investigated in details, and the results showed that the terpolymer solution had strong intermolecular hydrophobic association as the concentration exceeded the critical association concentration 1.5 g/L. The terpolymer solution possessed high surface activity, viscoelasticity, excellent heat resistance, salt tolerance and shearing resistance. The viscosity retention rate of copolymer solution was as high as 59.9% under the condition of fresh wastewater, $85^{\circ}C$ and a 60-days aging test.

  • In industrial production, the development of traditional polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membrane was limited due to its poor oxidation resistance, complex preparation process and high cost. In this study, a composite NF membrane with high flux, high separation performance, high oxidation resistance and simple process preparation was prepared by the method of dilute solution dip coating. And the sulfonated polysulfone was used for dip coating. The results indicated that the concentration of glycerin, the pore size of the based membrane, the composition of the coating solution, and the post-treatment process had important effects on the structure and performance of the composite NF membrane. The composite NF membrane prepared without glycerol protecting based membrane had a low flux, when the concentration of glycerin increased from 5% to 15%, the pure water flux of the composite NF membrane increased from 46.4 LMH to 108.2 LMH, and the salt rejection rate did not change much. By optimizing the coating system, the rejection rate of Na2SO4 and PEG1000 was higher than 90%, the pure water flux was higher than 40 LMH (60psi), and it can withstand 20,000 ppm.h NaClO solution cleaning. When the post treatment processes was adjusted, the salt rejection rate of NaCl solution (250 ppm) reached 45.5%, and the flux reached 62.2 LMH.

  • In order to decolorize the reactive dye wastewater, we investigated the dye-adsorption ability of chitin, which was natural polymer obtained from shrimp shell. Chitin particle(less than 250 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$n) was prepared from shrimp shells in the processes of decalcification in aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and deproteination in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The particle size of chitin was controlled to less than 250 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Three tripes of the reactive dyes-C.I. Reactive Red 120, C.I. Reactive red 241 and C.I. Reactive Black 5-were used. Dye adsorption ability of chitin was investigated by dipping the particle in the dyebaths of concentration of 0.0l%, 0.03% and 0.05% for various periods of time(1,3,5, 10,20,40,80,160minutes). The influence of addition of salt(Na$_2$SO$_4$) and alkali to the dyebaths on dye-absorption was also investigated. We obtained the following results fur the dye-absolution ability of chitin in the dyebaths of three types of reactive dyes. 1) The amount of dye uptake by chitin was increased by addition of salt to the dyebaths. 2) As the concentration of alkali became higher than 3g/I, the amount of dye uptake by chitin was increased. Chitin showed good dye-adsorption ability, when the alkali concentration was high. 3) Chitin showed equal dye uptake in the three types of dyebaths when the dye concentration was 0.0l%. Over 90% of dyestuffs was adsorbed from the dyebaths in ten minutes. When the dye concentration was higher, better adsorption ability was showed in a dye bath of Reactive black 5 than in the others. When the dye concentration was 0.03%, 90% of Reactive red 120 and Reactive red 241 was adsorbed in 40 minutes and the same of Reactive black 5 in 10 minutes. When the dye concentration was 0.05%, 9()% of Reactive red 120 was adsorbed in 80 minutes, and Reactive black 5 in to minutes.

  • Glutathione(L-$\gamma$ -glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine, GSH) produced by microbial enzymes was separated by a liquid chromatography. In order to select a resin which would bind GSH efficiently, a batch adsorption experiment was carried out with GSH solution and various resins at pH 8.0 GSH bound to Q-sepharose and QAE-sephadex among anion exchange resins, but the latter was found not to be suitable because of the reduction of resin volume at high salt concentration. Preliminary experiments using a standard solution were carried out to separate GSH. GSH and $\gamma$ -glutamylcysteine were separated from the other constituents by applying step gradient of salt(NaCl) concentration. GSH was successfully separated from $\gamma$ -glutamylcysteine by applying Tris buffer containing 35mM NaCl. Chromatographic separation behaviors for the enzymatic product was similar to that for the standard solution. Separation yields of GSH from the standard solution and enzymatic product solution were 72.6% and 84.4%, respectively.

  • The rice variety, Kwanok, was reared in the water and land beds and transplanted to the reclaimed soil area, having an average salt concentration of 0.39%. Two levels of the moderate and late season cultures with 4 treatments were used. The K and Si contents of the stem part of land bed seedlings were somewhat smaller, but total carbohydrate remarkably larger, the C/N ratio was accordingly greater than water bed seedlings. The rooting ability of land bed seedlings was vigorous markedly in culture solutions, to which added various concentrations of NaCl, The rooting ability of each seedling water not much declined in theculturing solution of up to 9.4mmhos/cm, (0.6%) of salt concentration, but it was drastically declined in the salt concentration over that. It seemed that the critical salt concentration for the rooting rice plant. The land bed seedlings in each salty condition markedly decreased compared with the water bed seeldings in transpiration rate and it showed a stronger drought resistance and contained a large amount of chlorophyll at transplanting stage, and also showed higher stability of chlorophyll at rooting stage in the salt treatment. The number of panicles, panicle weight, number of grains per panicle and ratio of matured grains of the rice plant grown by the land bed seedlings were much greater and 1,000 grain weight was less than from water bed seedlings. The cultural practices with the land bed seedlings increased the rough rice yields by 15% and 11%, respectively, compared with the yields of the moderate and late season cultures by water bed seedlings.

  • South Korea is largely dependent on imports of forage crops. In order to raise the self-sufficiency rate of forage crops, it is necessary to cultivate forage crops in 135,100 ha reclaimed land of South Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the growth of halophytes and forage crops in order to search for stable plants on reclaimed land. The plants were cultured in Hoagland solution and grown at 0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% of salt concentrations. Plants with good growth at 0.5% of salt concentration were halophytes such as Suaeda asparagoides and Salsola komarovii. Salicornia herbacea and Suaeda maritima showed good growth at 2.0% salinity, and Suaeda maritima showed stable growth at all of salt concentrations. In conclusion, Suaeda asparagoides showed the best growth at 0.5% of salt concentration and was considered the most biomass at reclaimed land in Korea with less than 0.5% of salt concentration.

  • The salt stress at seedling stage of barley was examined in different concentrations of NaCl containing 1/2 Hoagland solution. Among the physiological factors electric conductivity and sodium content of cell sap outflow solution were increased according to the in-crease of NaCl concentration in 1/2 Hoagland solution but the total protein content of root cell sap outflow solution was decreased. Changing pattern of amino acids content in plant was divided into 3 groups which were increased, decreased or unchanged by NaCl concentration in solution. In normal condition, sugar content in plant was higher than potassium or sodium but if NaCl was added more than 25mM in 1/2 Hoagland solution, sodium was the highest. Potassium content in shoot was decreased as 67% of control at 100mM of NaCl containing solution and in root it was decreased as 8%. Sum of the potassium and sodium content in shoot was seriously increased in accordant with NaCl concentration in culture solution, but in root it was gradually decreased. Chlorophyll content per g fresh weight and photosynthetic ability per $\textrm{cm}^2$ in first leaf were not affected by NaCl concentration of 1/2 Hoagland solution but root activity was slightly decreased compared to control.

  • An excess in the nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate leads to a phenomenon called eutrophication. In order to avoid this, numerous methods have been used to remove excess nutrients in the water. In this study, the use of a chemical method was assessed through the formation of magnesium ammonium phosphate. The difference in the removal efficiency of seawater and sea salt solution as primary sources of $Mg^{2+}$ ions and $Ca^{2+}$ ions for the formation of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) respectively, were observed, taking into account the changes in pH and concentration. The results showed that seawater removed about 90 % phosphate and less than 50 % ammonia in sewage water condition, whereas the sea salt solution removed almost 90 % phosphate and 70 % ammonia in solution at pH 9 and 10 mM concentration of sea salt which further increases as the optimum ${Mg/PO_4}^{3-}$, ${NH_4}^+$ ratio reaches 2. The difference in the removal efficiency of seawater and sea salt was due to the fact that the set-ups were prepared in different conditions. This study suggests that both seawater and sea salt can be used to remove nutrients from the water. The relatively higher removal of phosphate can be explained by the formation of HAP from free $Ca^{2+}$ ions initially present in seawater and sea salt solution.

  • In acid hydrolysis process of biomass saccharification. neutralization of acid hydrolyzate is essential step, which resulted in dissolved cations in glucose solution. Impact of cations to Kluyveromyces marxianus in glucose solution was investigated focused on ethanol fermentation. Either potassium or sodium cations decreased the ethanol fermentation and glucose to ethanol conversion. Glucose consumption by K. marxianus was delayed by increasing potassium cation concentration as completely consumed within 12 h in potassium cation 0.46 mol and 0.92 mol but within 24 h in potassium cation 1.38 mol. Also, ethanol fermentation process was slowed down with increasing concentration of the potassium sulfate. Fermentation of glucose solution to ethanol was more inhibited by sodium cation than potassium cation in glucose solution. Glucose was completely consumed within 24 h in sodium cation 0.95 mol. but at 1.90 mol or 2.84 mol in sodium cation could not finish the fermentation within 48 hour. Ethanol concentration was 22.26 g/L at low sodium cation in glucose solution with complete fermentation within 24 h. With increasing sodium cation in glucose solution, final ethanol concentration was reached at 14.10 g/L (sodium cation con) and 0.21 g/L (sodium cation con), which meant delaying of fermentation by sodium cations.
