Rice cultivar 'Janganbyeo' was cultivated by irrigating the saline waters of high salinity (3.0%) and medium saliniy (1.5%) for 4 days, and low salinity (0.5%) for 30 days at tillering, early meiosis and heading stage. Leaf injury due to salinity was most severe at tillering stage in 1999, but at heading stage in 2000. Heading date was delayed by 1 to 5 days by treatment of saline waters only at tillering stage. Culm length and panicle length were most severely shortened by treatment at early meiosis stage. Yield and yield components except for panicle number were decreased most by high salinity treatment regardless of growth stages. In particular, ripening ratio and grain weight among the yield components were decreased most conspicuously by the saline water treatment regardless of salinity and growth stage. Regarding grain weight grain-filling rate and duration, there is no remarked difference among the concentrations and treatment durations of saline water at tillering stage. However, their reductions were very different among the concentrations and treatment durations of saline water at early meiosis stage, being greatest when treated with high salinity for 4 days and followed by low salinity for 30 days. Also their reductions were very severe only when treated with high salinity for 4 days at heading stage.
This study was conducted to obtain the basic information for easily judgement to level of salinity stress of the reclaimed land. Rice varieties used were Nakdongbyeo and Chilsungbyeo. In seedling stage, 13 day-old seedlings were subjected to salt solution (0, 30, 60, 90mM) for 8 days. In reproductive stage, 30 day-old seedlings were transplanted 3 hills(3 seedlings /hill) per plastic pot (diameter 28${\times}$depth 30cm). Salinity stress was given by immersing pot in the salt solution(sea water) with 4 concentrations(0, 30, 60, 90mM)for 8 days at booting stage. The stomatal resistance was increased with salinity concentrations. Salinity stress appeared to be more sensitive in seedling stage than in reproductive stage in each concentrations. The photosynthesis was decreased in salinity treatment. Salt-treated periods influenced unfavorably stomatal resistance in each stages. The leaf chlorophyll content was remarkably decreased by increasing salt concentrations. The absorption of Na+ and Cl ̄ were increased as salt concentration in the culturing medium became higher, but there was no appearent difference in the absorption of K+, Mg++, and Ca++. The plant height and root length were decreased in salinity treatment. The inhibitory effect of salinity stress on root growth was more severe than in shoot growth. The stomatal resistance could have been used as bio-information.

The profer salinity range for aquaculture of hybrid grouper (Epinephleus bruneus♀ × Epinephleus lanceolatus♂) were evaluated in terms of their survival, growth, feed intake and physiological responses after 30 days of exposure to different salinities (0 psu, 3 psu, 5 psu, 10 psu, 15 psu, 20 psu, 25 psu, 30 psu). Hybrid grouper all died at 0 psu salinity on the 4th day of exposure but all hybrid survived at a salinity of 5 psu or higher during the exposure period. Body length and weight increased above 5 psu salinity and the growth rate was the highest at 30 psu. Hybrid exposed to 3 psu did not eat the feed pellet. Feed intake did not show a significant difference between salinity 20 psu, 25 psu and 30 psu. Plasma osmolality of the juvenile hybrids exposed to different salinities was 341~368 mg Osmol/kg above 5 psu. The oxygen consumption rate was the highest at 30 psu with 163.6±22.3 mg O2/kg fish/h. SOD, CAT and GSH-PX were significantly higher at 15 psu. Therefore, the critical salinity for survive of the juvenile hybrid was 5 psu, and the proper salinity for optimal culture was analyzed with 20~30 psu.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical characteristics of marine environment, and to predict the probability of the occurrence of hypoxia in the Dangdong bay. We predicted hypoxia using the logistic regression model analysis by observing the water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen concentration. The analysis showed that the Brunt-Väisälä frequency which was shallow than the deep bay entrance, was higher inside the bay due to a lesser amount of fresh water inflow from the inner side of the bay, and density stratification was formed. The Richardson number, and Brunt-Väisälä frequency were very high occasionally from June to September; however, after September 2, the stratification had a tendency to decrease. Analysis of dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and salinity data observed in Dangdong bay showed that the dissolved oxygen concentration in the bottom layer was mostly affected by the temperature difference (dt) between the surface layer and bottom layer. Meanwhile, when the depth difference (dz) was set as a fixed variable, the probability of the occurrence of hypoxia varied with respect to the difference in water temperature. The depth difference (dz) was calculated to be 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m, and the difference in water temperature (dt) was found to be greater than 70 % at 8℃, 7℃, 5℃, and 3℃. This indicated that the larger the difference in depth in the bay, the smaller is the temperature difference required for the generation of hypoxia. In particular, the place in the bay, where the water depth dif erence was approximately 20 m, was found to generate hypoxia.
Mortality of clam, Meretrix lusoria was measured during the experimental cultures in different sediments compositions and in different salinities of sea water. Experimental groups maintained in silt and clay showed significant mortality, while those treated in sand and in sand-silt showed little mortality. In the groups cultured in silt and clay, young groups of approximately 2.5cm in shell length were subjected to early and high mortality (approximately eighty-five per cent in foully-one days). The larger the shell size was, the later and the lower the mortality occurred. In different salinity, the groups maintained in silt and clay showed different mortalities. It is observed that the survival rate of the shell in the sea water of low salinity was higher than that in the high salinity water. Oxygen consumption of isolated gill tissue showed a little difference between the groups maintained in silt and clay and those in sand (the control-group). Consequently, it may be stated that the mortality results mainly from the deposition of silt and clay, although the survival rate of Meretrix lusoria depends also on water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, body size ana other factors.
The effect of flooding and soil salinity on the growth of yam (Dioscorea batatas) were studied on the experimantal site temporally established in the south-eastern part of Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land (near Gwanghwal myun, Gimjae-gun, Jellabukdo, Korea). Yam seedlings planted by using aerial bulblet as alternative of sliced tubers, were grown for 20-days and transplanted in black-vinyl mulched ridges (about 20 cm in height) at 70cm interval by $20{\times}60cm$ spacing in the $4^{th}$ of May, 2010. Soil salinity was maintained at lower than 1.2 ds $m^{-1}$ during the growing period and did not result to salt injury in all plants. However, flooding injury very seriously led to plant death and plant mortality rates at $67{\pm}21$ and $82{\pm}9%$ of yam plants in the compost and no compost treatment, respectively, died by heavy flooding during the rainy summer season. The main reasons of the flooding injury included the decreased rainfall acceptable capacity (RAC) after the rising of water table and a slowdown of water infiltration rate after the formation of an impermeable soil crust in the furrow bottom with continuous and heavy downpour during the rainy summer season. The effect of compost treatment was not statistically observed because of the severe spatial difference caused by wet injury, although yam tuber yield was higher at 30 kg $10^{-1}$ in the compost treatment than in the no-compost treatment at 20 kg $10^{-1}$. However, the size of tuber ranged at 1.23 to 1.60 cm in diameter and 3.7 to 5.0 cm in length in all both treatment, which means they are still reproducible for the next cropping season. Conclusively, proper counter-flooding measure and soil salinity control critically important for successful yam production in Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land.
Production of resting egg from the Korean rotifer, Brachiunus plicatilis (L and S-type) was investigated at different temperatures (L-type : 20, 24, $28^{\circ}C$, S-type : 28 32, $36^{\circ}C$) and salinities (10, 20,30 ppt). The rotifer was cultured in 25 ml test tube and fed on Nannochloris oculata. With regard to mixis rate, L-type rotifer showed higher rate at lower temperature, and the highest rate was observed at 20 ppt of salinity at each temperature of the experiment. However, for S-type rotifer, the optimum temperature and salinity were $28\~32^{\circ}C$ and 20 ppt, respectively. The highest number of resting egg was 173 eggs/ml in 16 days at $24^{\circ}C$, 10 ppt for L-type rotifer and 410 eggs/ml in 14 days at $28^{\circ}C$, 10 ppt for S-type rotifer. The maximum number of resting egg produced per 10,000 rotifers was 8,122 eggs at $20^{\circ}C$, 20 ppt for L-type rotifer and 8,700 eggs at $28^{\circ}C$, 20 ppt for S-type rotifer. The maximum number of resting egg produced $10^8$ cells of N. oculata was 50.7 eggs for L-type rotifer ($24^{\circ}C$, 20 ppt) and 79.6 eggs for S-type rotifer ($32^{\circ}C$, 10 ppt). The number of resting egg produced per day was $1\~11$ eggs/ml for L-type rotifers and $21\~35$ eggs/ml for S-type rotifer in 9 combination experiments. In this study, S-type rotifer is better than L-type rotifer in resting egg production, and the optimum temperature and salinity for resting egg production were $20^{\circ}C$, 20 ppt for L-type rotifer and $28^{\circ}C$, 20 ppt for S-type rotifer. This result shows the difference of Korean rotifer in the optimum condition for resting egg production from other rotifers reported earlier.
From 2014 to 2016 water quality survey results according to the location and depth of Youngrang Lake are as follows: Distribution of dissolved oxygen in the water depth was investigated by the middle section and the downstream 1st, 3rd, 5th, when investigating bottem 1m interval anoxic layer. In organic matter and nutrient concentration distribution COD upstream 2.8 mg/L, middle section 4.2 mg/L downstream 4.1 mg/L, more than two times higher in bottem layer and TP concentrations showed a similar trend with COD, upstream of 0.047 mg/L, middle section was 0.051 mg/L, downstream of 0.059 mg/L. There was a difference in salinity every survey period the average salinity is lowest with 28.5‰ when the second survey. And the highest with 32.1‰ in the fourth investigation. Korean trophic state index($TSI_{KO}$) were showed eutrophic conditions in the middle section and downstream else showed mesotrophic state in the entire period. In order to evaluate the cause of water pollution Youngrang lake, regression analysis of the relationship between salinity and DO, COD, TN, TP, Chl-a results, $R^2$ is from 0.63 to 0.95 Youngrang lake water quality was found to have a close relationship with salinity due to inflow of seawater. As a result, in order to improve the quality of Youngrang lake efficient incorporation of the amount of water through the seawater influent as it is considered the key.
The variations of physical properties due to inflow of seawater by sluice gates operation were observed in Shihwa Lake. The distributions of salinity and temperature were investigated at 11 stations during February, 1997 to July, 1998. The salinity of water mass in Shihwa Lake before gate operation was ranged below 15psu and strong stratification due to inflow of seawater was observed at the depth of 11 m. In July 1997, temperature difference of 10^{\circ}C$ was occurred between the surface and bottom water due to strong solar radiation. During October 1997 to February 1998, inversion of temperature distribution, which the temperature of bottom water was higher than that of surface water, was observed. In July 1997, temperature, salinity, current speed and current direction were investigated by RCM-7 at St.3 for 56 days. When sea water was intruded in Shihwa Lake, the symmetric distribution of temperature and salinity was observed and it seems to be resulted from inflow of seawater with low temperature and high salinity. After January 1998, salinity of Shihwa Lake was increased over 30psu due to continuous gate operation and the stratification was weakened.
Relation between spatial variation of soil salinity and emergence of five upland crops such as sudan grass, sesbania, barnyard grass, corn and soybean was studied in the three reclaimed lands of Korea during two years from 2007 to 2008. Although soil salinity is vary high at seeding season, desalting treatment by three days-flooding before seeding, reach at favorable level lower than $6dS\;m^{-1}$ of soil salinity for emergence of soiling and forage crops and then plant number emerged(No. $m^{-2}$) was 55~149 for sudan grass, 118~266 for barnyard grass, 46~115 for sesbania, 3~11 for corn and 6~19 for soybean in 2007. However plant number emerged under no desalting treatment varies place by place because of soil salinity difference in 2008. Plant number emerged after seeding according to soil salinity was well expressed as logarithmic function, and sharply decrease with increase of soil salinity. It is accordingly concluded that desalting treatment of flooding before seeding of upland crops is essential for good emergence in the newly reclaimed land from tidal flat.
