This study was conducted to evaluate the cleansing effect of RC-Prep (10% Urea-peroxide, 15% EDTA) on apical third of root canal. Thirty single rooted human teeth were divided into three groups, and ten canals in each group were all enlarged three sizes greater than their original diameter with K-type files and irrigated with each of three irrigants. The three used irrigants were RC-prep (Premier Co.) in combination with 3.5% Sodium hypochlorite, Normal saline, 3.5% Na OCL. In each group, one of three irrigants were used in conjunction with instrumentation as they would be during clinical condition. After final irrigation, the canals were dried with paper points and the teeth were split longitudinally. The cleanness of canal walls iii the apical region were examined with Scanning Electron Microscope. The following results were drawn. 1. The use of Rc-Prep in combination with 3.5% NaOCl showed more clean canal surface than the use of other two irrigants. 2. The canals used RC-Prep in combination with 3.5% NaOCl revealed remnants of pulp tissue and smeared layer, but the openings of dentinal tubules were relatively clean and wide. 3. There was no significant difference in the debridement effect of 3.5% NaOCl and Saline solution. 4. The use of Saline solution showed great amount of remnants of pulp tissue which couldn't find in the use of 3.5% NaOCl.
Biological samples can be fixed either by chemical method by using chemical solution or physical methods by using heat treatment. The problem in traditional heat fixation is unsatisfactory quality due to uneven heat conduction in specimen and loss of inner cell contents. Chemical fixation method also bears several intrinsic problems like the limit in specimen size, time consumption in fixative impregnation, and loss of low molecular weight cell components. These factors deteriorate the quality of fixed specimen, thus limit the magnification and contrast of tissue pictures. Microwave heat has been reported to be a good alternative to current chemical methods to overcome these problem. In this study, we tried to introduce the microwave energy method to routine fixation work in hospital. We replaced chemical fixative with saline to provide moderate reaction condition, and used frozen section to reduce time for sample preparation. Temperature was measured at each experiment. The fixation of rat kidney tissue with 2.45 GHz electromagnetic wave and saline showed similar result to the control group fixed with traditional chemical method. Human tumor tissue fixed with 2.45 GHz electromagnetic in frozen section was improved in terms of histochemistry of PAS and immunohistochemistry of tumor marker like cytokeratin. Total turnaround time was reduced from $24\sim38$ h to to $2\sim4$ h. In conclusion, the quality of samples prepared by microwave heating method was at least as good as that of traditional method. If the condition for the fixation of different specimens is standardized, this new method could be applied to routine work in hospital, and could save working time as well.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the smear layer removing efficiency of two root canal preparation techniques. Twelve single-rooted teeth were used in two groups of six each. Group 1 was biomechanically prepared by hand using a K-file with a high volume of normal saline irrigation. Group 2 was. prepared by using ultrasonically activated K-file with a constant high volume of normal saline irrigation. After the experimental procedures, each root was split saggitally. The removing efficiency of the preparation methods were assessed in terms of surface condition of the canal walls at three levels, those coronal, middle, and apical thirds. On the basis of remaining debris, presence of smear layer, and patency of dentinal tubules, each canal was evaluated according to a scale form 0 to 2. A statistical analysis was used to indicated any significant differences in surface condition between the two methods. There was no statistical significance between hand instrumentation and ultrasonic instrumentation at the cervical third but removing efficiency of ultrasonic instrumentation was superior. No statistically significant differences were obhserved for middle or apical third.
A series of superabsorbents based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid, N,N'-methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA) were prepared by inverse suspension polymerization. These hydrogels were further crosslinked on the surface with polyethylene glycol-600 (PEG-600). The water absorbency or swelling behaviors for these xerogels in water and 0.9% saline solutions, both under free condition and under load were investigated. Absorption characteristics of these hydrogels were found to depend on nature and concentration of crosslinker in the system. It was also found that the saline absorption was significantly improved as the incorporation of AMPS in the polymer was increased. The surface crosslinking introduced in the polymers was found to improve the absorption under load characteristics without lowering the free water absorption capacities of the polymer to a considerable extent.

Streptozotocin, which is a naturally occurring nitrosoamide used extensively to produce diabetes mellitus in experimental animals, has been known to be chemically stable only under acidic condition (pH 4). The present study was conducted to determine whether its degradation products formed under various conditions can induce hyperglycemia in female rats. Streptozotocin in phosphate buffer saline (pH 7.4) resulted in spontaneous degradation rapidly. Furthermore, streptozotocin incubated with plasma isolated from rats was degraded even faster than those in neutral buffer. When streptozotocin was administered iv to rats, significant elevations in blood glucose level were observed within 24 hours. However, rats treated with equimolar concentration of streptozotocin degradation products under the phosphate buffer saline as well as the plasma did not lead to hyperglycemia. These results suggest that, when streptozotocin administered undergo spontaneous breakdown in vivo, its degradation Products do not induce the hyperglycemia in rats.

The traditional kanjang has been prepared by mixing meju and 18% saline solution, and fermenting for 60 days. The traditional kanjang is very salty and inferior in flavor and taste comparing with commercial fermented soy sauce. To improve the quality of traditional kanjang, Zygosaccharomyces rouxii H-62, a flavor-related mutant, was inoculated during fermentation. It was found that the addition of Z rouxii helped to improve the organoleptic quaity of traditional kanjang. The optimal condition for preparing traditional kanjang was to use 5L of 15.5% saline solution per meju. Meju must be cut into 12 pieces to get a proper total nitrogen and pure extract content. The optimal fermentatin temperature was 3$0^{\circ}C$. The prepared kanjang contained over 0.8% total nitrogen and 6.0% pure extract after 60 days of fermentation.

To understand molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation of plant cells to saline stress and stress memory, we developed Arabidopsis callus suspension-cultured cells adapted to high salt. Adapted cells to high salt exhibited enhanced tolerance compared to control cells. Moreover, the salt tolerance of adapted cells was stably maintained even after the stress is relieved, indicating that the acquired salt tolerance of adapted cells was memorized. In order to characterize metabolic responses of plant cells during adaptation to high salt stress as well as stress memory, we compared metabolic profiles of salt-adapted and stress-memorized cells with control cells by using NMR spectroscopy. A principle component analysis showed clear metabolic discrimination among control, salt-adapted and stress-memorized cells. Compared with control cells, metabolites related to shikimate metabolism such as tyrosine, and flavonol glycosides, which are related to protective mechanism of plant against stresses were largely up-regulated in adapted cell lines. Moreover, coniferin, a precursor of lignin, was more abundant in salt-adapted cells than control cells. Cell morphology analysis using transmission electron microscopy indicated that cell wall thickness of salt-adapted cells was significantly induced compared to control cells. Consistently, salt adapted cells contained more lignin in their cell walls compared to control cells. The results provide new insight into mechanisms of plant adaptation to saline stress as well as stress memory in metabolic level.

This study was carried out to understand the geochemistry of saline water circulating in an ash disposal pond of Seocheon power plant, Korea. For this study, ash pond waters, slurry water and seawater samples were collected and analyzed for major ions and trace elements. Results show that ash pond waters and slurry water are alkaline in nature due to high calcium content, and have high concentration of Ca, B, Li, As, Ba, Al, Si and Mn over seawater, suggest that these elements leached from fly ash even at high alkaline condition and ionic strength. Slurry water has high concentration of B, Ba, Li, Mn, Si and Sr compare to ash pond waters, expresses that these elements seem to be easily reached at initial stage fly ash-water interaction, and also might be associated with the surface of the fly ash particles. Additionally, PHREEQC program predicted several secondary solid phases, which are also influenced in the leaching of elements in to the saline water.

Sodium is known to reduce a plant growth and yields. However, the relationships between physiological response of seedling and salinity stress caused by growing media are not well understood yet. We conducted experiments to investigate change of some parameters including Na, EC, moisture content in media under different air temperature ($15^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$), and the response of fruit-vegetables such as cucumber, oriental melon on saline conditions originated from horticultural substrate. Volumetric moisture content of media at $15^{\circ}C$ was 70%, but at $25^{\circ}C$ was decreased by 45% within 22 hrs, showing below optimal matric potential, approximately. During reaction time, the increase of Na concentration was significantly greater in saline substrate than in control. The decrease rate of Na concentration according to supplying irrigation water was higher in saline substrate than in control. $CO_2$ assimilation rate and transpiration rate of Korea melon grown in low temperature were decreased with a Na/cation ratio in hydroponic solution. Water saturation deficit was also increased significantly at $15^{\circ}C$ as compare to $25^{\circ}C$. Saline stress during nursery stage induced a reduction of seedling quality, growth and cucumber yield. The results suggest that the relationship between uncontrolled Na uptake of seedling from saline substrate and meteological condition is responsible for saline stress.
