Transfer Function Model Forecasting of Sea Surface Temperature at Yeosu in Korean Coastal Waters (전이함수모형에 의한 여수연안 표면수온 예측)

  • In this study, single-input transfer function model is applied to forecast monthly mean sea surface temperature(SST) in 2010 at Yeosu in Korean coastal waters. As input series, monthly mean air temperature series for ten years(2000-2009) at Yeosu in Korea is used, and Monthly mean SST at Yeosu station in Korean coastal waters is used as output series(the same period of input). To build transfer function model, first, input time series is prewhitened, and then cross-correlation functions between prewhitened input and output series are determined. The cross-correlation functions have just two significant values at time lag at 0 and 1. The lag between input and output series, the order of denominator and the order of numerator of transfer function, (b, r, s) are identified as (0, 1, 0). The selected transfer function model shows that there does not exist the lag between monthly mean air temperature and monthly mean SST, and that transfer function has a first-order autoregressive component for monthly mean SST, and that noise model was identified as $ARIMA(1,0,1)(2,0,0)_{12}$. The forecasted values by the selected transfer function model are generally $0.3-1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than actual SST in 2010 and have 6.4 % mean absolute percentage error(MAPE). The error is 2 % lower than MAPE by ARIMA model. This implies that transfer function model could be more available than ARIMA model in terms of forecasting performance of SST.

Evaluation of the Effect of the Discharged Water from Bong Stream after Rainfall Events on the Bacteriological Water Quality in Gangjinman, Korea (강우 발생에 따른 남해군 봉천 방출수가 강진만 해역의 세균학적 수질에 미치는 영향 평가)

  • We investigated the effect of the discharged water from Bong Stream, which is located in the drainage area of Gangjinman area on the bacteriological water quality in the coastal area after rainfall events. Following 12.5 mm of rainfall, water discharged from Bong Stream had a very limited effect on bacteriological water quality in adjacent area and the affected area did not extend to the designated area. On the other hand, after 23 mm rainfall, the density of fecal coliform at stations located in the designated area was higher than at stations located in the adjacent area. The degree of bacteriological contamination at the surveyed stations in the coastal area after rainfall events did not show a relationship with distance from the shoreline. These results indicate that the direction of spread and the range of contaminants from the drainage area were affected by tides at the time of the survey. Therefore, a detailed survey of the effects of tides on the diffusion characteristics of the contaminants from Bong Stream is needed to establish a proper management plan for the surveyed area.

  • There are several improved designs of passive radar reflector available, but their performance is ultimately limited by the cross-section area and this is governed by the size of the buoy and the acceptable windage. Therefore it is needed to investigate the low-cost, low power, a active device that can be improve the reliability of response. Active Radar Reflector(AAR) consists of a microwave amplifier with separate receive and transmit antennas. It is a device which automatically transmits a signal in response to an interrogating signal received. It was intended to improve the consistency of the radar return from the buoy and the small craft, particularly in poor sea conditions. And it directly improves safety of navigation at sea.

Removal of Fecal Indicator Bacteria from Bivalves under Natural and Electrolyzed Water (패류 중 자연정화 및 인공정화에 의한 위생지표세균의 변화)

  • In coastal areas that are affected by continuous, seasonal or occasional pollution sources, bivalves accumulate biological contaminants such as pathogenic bacteria. We investigated the effect of natural seawater relaying and electrolyzed seawater depuration on the bacteriological quality of artificially contaminated oysters Crassostrea gigas and short-necked clams Ruditapes philippinarum to suggest an alternative method of shellfish sanitation control.When artificially contaminated oysters and short-necked clams (fecal coliform level 1,700 MPN/100 g) were relayed into a sea area of safe bacteriological water quality, the fecal coliform level dropped to below 110 MPN/100 g after 1 day. The bacteriological quality of oysters and short-necked clams that are contaminated at a fecal coliform level of 1,700 MPN/100 g could be improved, and become appropriate for raw consumption by a single day relay under proper environmental conditions. When artificially contaminated oysters (fecal coliform level 330 MPN/100 g) were depurated with electrolyzed seawater, 94% of fecal coliform was eliminated after 12 h and fecal coliform was undetectable after 24 h. After 24 h depuration with electrolyzed seawater, the fecal coliform level of short-necked clams with initial fecal coliform of 2,400 MPN/100 g was below 20 MPN/100 g. However, the fecal coliform level of short-necked clams with initial fecal coliform of 17,000 MPN/100 g was relatively high, at 790 MPN/100 g, even after 24 h of depuration with electrolyzed seawater, because of the repeated cycle of excretion and accumulation of fecal coliform in shellfish tissue under the closed depuration environment. Such natural seawater relaying and electrolyzed seawater depuration can be restrictively applied to improve or secure the bacteriological quality of oysters and short-necked clams in accordance with safety levels for bivalves for raw consumption.

Evaluation of Bacteriological Safety for the Shellfish Growing Waters in Taean Area, Korea (충남 태안 패류생산해역에서의 세균학적 위생안정성 평가)

  • The seawater in the Taean area was surveyed to evaluate the conditions of the bay and compliance with the bacteriological criteria for a designated area for shellfish production for export. Samples of seawater were collected monthly at 34 sampling stations established in the survey area from January 2002 to December 2004. The bacterial density in the coastal area close to a pollution source located to the northeast of the survey area was higher than in the open sea to the west. The bacteriological counts in the water did not change with 16.5mm of rainfall, but increased abruptly after 65.4mm of rainfall. The total coliform and fecal coliform most probable numbers (MPNs) of 1,224 seawater samples in the survey area were <1.8-2,400 and <1.8-790 MPN/100 mL, respectively. The geometric mean and estimated 90th percentile of total coliforms were 1.9-3.4 and 2.7-26.3 MPN/100mL, respectively, and for fecal coliforms were <1.8-2.6 and 1.8-12.0 MPN/100mL, respectively. The bacteriological water quality in the Taean seawater area met the National Shellfish Sanitation Program criteria for an approved area and the Korea Shellfish Sanitation Program criteria for a designated area for shellfish production for export.

Controlling risks at sea --- Indications of mutual insurance upon safety onboard

  • A lot of efforts have been made to improve maritime safety by means of enhancing safety legislation and verifying the compliance thereof. However, with the development of mutual insurance, it is contributing more and more to better maritime safety. The P&I clubs to be discussed in the paper are now not only exercising controls and providing guidance in event of emergencies, but also keeping close and continuous monitoring over safety operations and conditions of those vessels entered, through their world-wide network and advanced communication, and by professional accident-handling teams. In view of this, it is necessary to discuss the roles of commercial shipping and the close linkage between it and onboard safety practices. The paper looks at first basic principles in maritime insurance, and then focuses on the rules and activities of P&I clubs and their implications upon shipboard operations.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sea water transport between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River estuary. Numerical modeling was used to evaluate the characteristics of the tidal current. Numerical simulations of three different topographies were conducted. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The volume of sea water transport was reduced by $0.7{\sim}18.4%$ when water depth was decreased at Busan New-port (10 m); 2) The volume of sea water transport was increased by $3.5{\sim}21.9%$ when a channel (depth 5 m) was constructed in the direction of the Nakdong River estuary.

Ocean Wave Forecasting and Hindercasting Method to Support for Navigational Safety of Ship (선박의 항행안전지원을 위한 파랑추산에 관한 연구)

  • In order to improve navigational safety of ships, an ocean wave prediction model of high precision within a short time, dealing with multi-directional random waves from the information of the sea surface winds encountered at the planned ship's course, was introduced for construction of ocean wave forecasting system on the ship. In this paper, we investigated a sea disaster occurred by a stormy weather in the past. We analyzed the sea surface wind first and then carried out ocean wave hindercasting simulations according to the routes the sunken vessel. From the result of this study, we concluded that the sea disaster was caused by rapidly developed iou pressure system Okhotsk Sea and the predicted values by the third generation wave prediction model(WAM) was agreed well with the observed significant wave height, wave period, and directional wave spectrum. It gives a good applicability for construction of a practical on-board calculation system.
