  • NuDE 2.0 (Nuclear Development Environment 2.0) is a formal-method-based software development, verification and safety analysis environment for safety-critical digital I&Cs implemented with programmable logic controller (PLC) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA). It simultaneously develops PLC/FPGA software implementations from one requirement/design specification and also helps most of the development, verification, and safety analysis to be performed mechanically and in sequence. The NuDE 2.0 now consists of 25 CASE tools and also includes an in-depth solution for indirect commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software dedication of new FPGA-based digital I&Cs. We expect that the NuDE 2.0 will be widely used as a means of diversifying software design/implementation and model-based software development methodology.

  • Software verification and validation(V&V) is a means to develop high-quality software and assure safety and reliability for software. Also, we can achieve the desired software quality through systematic V&V activities. The software to be applied safety critical system like nuclear power plants is required to setup the V&V methodology that comply with licensing requirements for nuclear power plants and should be performed V&V activities according to it. In this paper, we classified safety-critical, safety-related and non-safety for software according to safety function to be peformed and define V&V activities to be applied software grade. Also, we defined V&V activities, procedures and documentation for each phase of software development life cycle and showed techniques and management to perform V&V. Finally, we propose the V&V framework to be applied software development of SMART(System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) MMIS (Man-Machine Interface System) and to comply with domestic licensing requirements.

  • Application of computer software to safety-critical systems is on the increase. To be successful, the software must be designed and constructed to meet the functional and performance requirements of the system. For safety reason, the software must be demonstrated not only to meet these requirements, but also to operate safely as a component within the system. For longer-term cost consideration, the software must be designed and structured to ease future maintenance and modifications. This paper present a software engineering process for the production of safety-critical software for a nuclear power plant The presentation is expository in nature of a viable high quality safety-critical software development. It is based on the ideas of a rational design process and on the experience of the adaptation of such process in the production of the safety-critical software for the Shutdown System Number Two of Wolsong 2, 3 & 4 nuclear power generation plants. This process is significantly different from a conventional process in terms of rigorous software development phases and software design techniques. The process covers documentation, design, verification and testing using mathematically precise notations and highly reviewable tabular format to specify software requirements and software design. These specifications allow rigorous, stepwise verification of software design against software requirements, and code against software design using static analysis. The software engineering process described in this paper applies the principle of information-hiding decomposition in software design using a modular design technique so that when a change is' required or an error is detected, the affected scope can be readily and confidently located. It also facilitates a sense of high degree of confidence in the ‘correctness’ of the software production, and provides a relatively simple and straightforward code implementation effort.

  • Recently, train control system is adopting computer system replacing mechanical system and its software is taking more responsibility than ever. Train control system software is a safety-critical embedded software with realtime and high reliability requirements. In this paper, we propose a safety assessment method for the train control system software. We review characteristics of train control system software and analyze related international software safety standards to derive requirements for safety assessment. Testing tools used for embedded software are surveyed to find a feasible safety assessment architecture. The proposed safety assessment method is to use safety activity results generated during development processes and feed them to the runtime embedded software testing tool.

  • Safety critical systems are those in which a failure can have serious and irreversible consequences. Nowadays digital technology has been rapidly applied to critical system such as railways, airplanes, nuclear power plants, vehicles. The main difference between analog system and digital system is that the software is the key component of the digital system. The digital system performs more varying and highly complex functions efficiently compared to the existing analog system because software can be flexibly designed and implemented. The flexible design make it difficult to predict the software failures. This paper reviews safety standard and criteria for safety critical system such as railway system and suggests software development methodology for more detail description.

  • Recently, IoT, artificial intelligence, cloud, big data, and mobile fields have converged, leading to a new industrial era called the 4th industrial revolution. This 4th industrial revolution has been expanded to all industry area and Software has been taken as important role in this revolution. Thus Software Safety is the huge factor because Software is highly relevant to human safety in accordance with Software expansion. However this Software Safety has been focused on not organization improvement activities but current design/development, In this paper, to solve this issue, Software Safety Maturity level and relevant Process Area is defined. This study is expected to contribute to systematic software safety activities.

  • With the development of autonomous driving technology, as the use of software in vehicles increases, the complexity of the system increases and the difficulty of development increases. Developments that meet ISO 26262 must be carried out to reduce the malfunctions that may occur in vehicles where the system is becoming more complex. ISO 26262 for the functional safety of the vehicle industry proposes to consider functional safety from the design stage to all stages of development. Specifically at the software level, the requirements to be complied with during development and the requirements to be complied with during verification are defined. However, it is not clearly expressed about specific design methods or development methods, and it is necessary to supplement development guidelines. The importance of analysis and verification of requirements is increasing due to the development of technology and the increase of system complexity. The vehicle industry must carry out developments that meet functional safety requirements while carrying out various development activities. We propose a process that reflects the perspective of system engineering to meet the smooth application and developmentrequirements of ISO 26262. In addition, the safety analysis/verification FMEA processforthe safety of the proposed ISO 26262 function was conducted based on the FCAS (Forward Collision Avoidance Assist System) function applied to autonomous vehicles and the results were confirmed. In addition, the safety analysis/verification FMEA process for the safety of the proposed ISO 26262 function was conducted based on the FCAS (Forward Collision Avoidance Assist System) function applied to the advanced driver assistance system and the results were confirmed.

  • Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependence on software to train control systems. Hence, the safety assurance of the vital software running on the railway system is very critical task and yet, not many works have been done. While much efforts have been reported to improve electronic hardware's safety, not so much systematic approaches to evaluate software's safety, especially for the vital software running on board train controllers. In this paper, we have developed the static software testing tool for railway signaling, especially Fagan Inspection module and checklists supporting module. This static testing tool for railway signaling can be utilized at the assessment phase, and also usefully at the software development stage also. It is anticipated that it will be greatly helpful for the evaluation on the software for railway signalling system.
