This paper aims to design a variable-stiffness type economical safety joint for service robots. The safety joint was designed to have a passive shock absorbing mechanism for protecting human from a catastrophic collision under service condition of robots. A simple mechanism composed of two action disks for switching the load transfer, a spring and a screw for pre-load was proposed. In order to evaluate the performance of the safety joint a testing platform which can carry out the static and impact tests was also designed and fabricated. From the test results, the designed safety joint was proved to have a variable load-carrying capacity and about 42% impact absorption capacity with simple manipulation of the control screw.
A new soft finger mechanism using a spring as a backbone is proposed in this work. It is a 4 DOF mechanism that consists of a spring and 3 cylinders, which behave like joints with 3 up-and-down rotations and 1 left-and-right rotation. To control each joint, cylinders have small holes in their cross-sectional areas, and wires of different length are penetrated into these holes. We can control each joint by pulling the corresponding wire. The forward kinematics is solved by using the geometry of mechanism. And the relationship (Jacobian) between the linear velocity of the wires and the joint angular rate is obtained. A virtual simulator is developed to test the validity of the kinematic model. In the experiment, first, the position control is conducted by tracking a given trajectory. Second, to verify the flexibility and safety, we show that the soft finger deflects in a safe manner, in spite of the collision with environment.
In a number of fields, robots are being used for two purposes: efficiency and safety. Most robots, however, have single-actuator mechanism for each joint, where the tasks are performed with high stiffness. High stiffness causes undesired problems to the environment and robots. This study proposes redundant actuator mechanism as an alternative idea to cope with these problems. In this paper, Double-Actuator Unit (DAU) is implemented at each joint for applications of multi-link manipulators. The DAU is composed of two motors: the positioning actuator and the stiffness modulator, which enables independent control of positioning and compliance. A three-link manipulator with DAUs enables adaptive control of RCC. By modulating the joint stiffness of the manipulator and controlling the position of RCC, we can significantly reduce contact force during assembly tasks and surgical procedures.

Very long life fatigue tests were carried out on 16Mn steel base metal and its welded joint by using the ultrasonic fatigue testing technique. Specimen shapes (round and plate) were considered for both the base metal and welded joint. The results show that the specimens present different S-N curve characteristics in the region of $10^5-10^9$ cycles. The round specimens showed continuously decreasing tendency while plate specimens showed a steep decreasing step and an asymptotic horizontal one. The fatigue strength of round specimen was found higher than plate specimen. The fatigue strength of as-welded joint was 45.0% of the base material for butt joint and 40% for cruciform as-welded joint. It was found that fracture can still occur in butt joint beyond $5{\times}10^6$ cycles. The cruciform joint has a fatigue limit in the very long life fatigue regime ($10^7-10^9$ cycles). Fatigue strength of butt as-welded joint was much higher as compared to cruciform as-welded joint. Improvement in fatigue strength of welded joint was found due to UPT. The observation of fracture surface showed crack mainly initiated from welded toe at fusion areas or geometric discontinuity sites at the surface in butt joint and from welded toe in cruciform joint.
In this study, we have developed the humanoid joint modules which provide a variety of service while living with people in the future home life. The most important requirement is ensuring the safety for humans of the robot system for collaboration with people and providing physical service in dynamic changing environment. Therefore we should construct the mechanism and control system that each joint of the robot should response sensitively and rapidly to fulfill that. In this study, we have analyzed the characteristic of the joint which based on the target constituting the humanoid motion, developed the optimal actuator system which can be controlled based on each joint characteristic, and developed the control system which can control an multi-joint system at a high speed. In particular, in the design of the joint, we have defined back-drivability at the safety perspective and developed an actuator unit to maximize. Therefore we establish a foundation element technology for future commercialization of intelligent service robots.
In this paper, Nonlinear Static Pushover analysis method(NSP) is proposed which apply to RC buildings reinforced by external retrofit for seismic performance. Based on previous analysis and research, NSP is more developed by connection nonlinearity according to shear resistance mechanism such as dowel and adhesive resistance as major shear resistance elements. According to the proposed method, structural analysis for example buildings was carried out to evaluate seismic performance of buildings. And, it was confirmed that depending on shear strain and characteristics of joint resistant of external retrofitting are different from internal retrofitting. Furthermore, the strength reduction coefficient of the anchor needs to be considered at the joint design.
In this paper, we designed and tested an ankle joint mechanism for a gait rehabilitation robot. Gait rehabilitation programs are designed to improve the natural leg motion of patients who have lost their walking capabilities by accident or disease. Strengthening the muscles of the lower-limbs and stimulation of the nervous system corresponding to walking helps patients to walk again using gait assistive devices. It is an obvious requirement that the rehabilitation system's motion should be similar to and as natural as the normal gait. However, the system being used for gait rehabilitation does not pay much attention to ankle joints, which play an important role in correct walking as the motion of the ankle should reflect the movement of the center of gravity (COG) of the body. Consequently, we have designed an ankle mechanism that ensures the safety of the patient as well as efficient gait training. Also, even patients with low leg muscle strength are able to operate the ankle joint due to the direct-drive mechanism without a reducer. This safety feature prevents any possible adverse load on the human ankle. The additional degree of freedom for the roll motion achieves a gait pattern which is similar to the normal gait and with a greater degree of comfort.
This paper reports on the development of a roller-cam clutch mechanism. This mechanism can transfer bidirectional torque with high backdrivability, as well as increase actuation energy efficiency, in electrical exoskeleton robots. The developed mechanism was installed at the robot knee joint and unclutched during the swing phase which uses less metabolic energy, thereby functioning as a passive joint. The roller-cam clutch aimed to increase actuation energy efficiency while also producing high backdrivability by generating zero impedance for users during the swing phase. To develop the mechanism, mathematical modeling of the roller-cam clutch was conducted, with the design having more than three safety factors following optimization. Titanium (Ti-6AL-4V) material was used. Finally, modeling verification was done using ANSYS software.
The thermal stresses induced by difference in Coefficient of Thermal Expansion between FR-4 board and 63Sn-37Pb solder joint directly affect the reliability of 63Sn-37Pb solder joint. This research, thus, focuses to investigate the crack initiation and propagation behavior around solder joint by imposing a designed Acceleration Life Test Procedure on solder joint by using a newly manufactured Thermal Impact Experimental Apparatus. The fracture mechanism of the solder joint was found to be highly influenced by thermal stresses. The reliability of solder joint was evaluated by using a failure probability model in terms of varying parameters such as frequency and temperature. The relationship between failure probability and safety factor was also studied.
The use of thick plate in increasing in recent years due to the rapid expansion of chemical plants, nuclear plants, ships and other industrial plants. Welding is the most popular joining techniques employed in manufacturing industrial machineries and structures. Normally, Groove shapes are prepared according to appropriate rules and regulations such as KS, JIS, AWS, LR, DNV and etc. for various thicknesses of plate. However those groove angles tend to be too large. As a result of large groove angle, residual stress, deformation of material and strength reduction is obtained. Therefore, the reliability and safety of structures and machinery tend to be decreasing. Therefore, in this paper, theoretical as well as experimental study are carried out to find optimum groove shapes for T-welded joint of mild steel. The test specimen are made in same condition with simulation model. Welding residual stresses measurement by sectional cutting method. ⅰ) The mechanical difference for change the thickness of plate and groove angle are not appeared. ⅱ) In a mechanical point of view minimum preparation angle(40°) is more suitable than maximum groove angle(60℃). ⅲ) The measurement value and distribution of welding residual stresses are not effected largely by groove angle. It is mechanical restraint that mainly affect welding residual stresses distribution. In mechanical point of view minimum groove angle is more suitable than maximum groove angle. Therefore, it is appropriate to minimize the size of groove shape in strength and safety.
