  • Purpose : The purposes of this study were to examine the levels of job stress, perceptions of the patient safety culture, and patient safety nursing activities, and to identify factors influencing patient safety nursing activities among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Methods : For this cross-sectional study, data were collected from 161 ICU nurses working in two university-affiliated hospitals in Gyeonggi-do between June 30 and July 30, 2020. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, a one-way ANOVA, the Pearson correlation method, and multiple regression using the SPSS program. Results : The average levels of job stress, perception of patient safety culture, and patient safety nursing activities were 3.48, 3.44, and 4.45 out of 5, respectively. Multiple regression showed that perception of patient safety culture and career in current workplace were found to be statistically significant correlates of patient safety nursing activities. Conclusion : In order to promote patient safety nursing activities, patient safety culture needs to be incorporated into the education of ICU nurses. Perception of patient safety should be enhanced to improve patients safety nursing activity.

  • Purposes: This study aimed to identify the relationships among personal and organizational communication skills, occupational stress, and patient safety activity levels of two nursing workforce groups (nurses and nursing assistants) who provide integrated nursing care services. Methodology: The study design is a cross-sectional study. Seventy-one nurses and forty-three nursing assistants working in the integrated nursing care service wards participated in this study. The data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire from June to July 2021. The relationships among the variables were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Findings: Nurses' personal communication skills (r=.294, p=.013), organizational communication skills (r=.408, p<.001), and occupational stress (r=.243, p=.041) were associated with their patient safety activities. However, nursing assistants' personal communication skills, organizational communication, and occupational stress were not correlated with their patient safety activities. Practical Implication: Patient safety activities of nurses were related to their communication skills and occupational stress, but nurse assistants were not. Therefore, nurses should encourage nursing assistants to responsibly engage in patient safety activities and supervise their works appropriately to achieve high-quality care.

Methods: Data were collected from August 10 to September 26, 2022 from 154 operating nurses who consented to participate and have worked for more than six months in hospitals with 300 or more beds in the Seoul-Incheon area. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program. Results: The main factors affecting patient safety management activities were safety control (β=.36, p<.001) and nursing professionalism (β=.15, p=.046). The regression model was statistically significant (F=13.49, p<.001), with explanatory power of approximately 28.6%. Conclusion: Based on these results, the aforementioned activities can be promoted by preparing and providing an operating room safety management program that can improve safety control and establish proper nursing professionalism.

  • Since Zohar(1980) emphasized the influence of social, organizational, and psychological context in occupational safety and health study, the research in this area tends to be emphasizing the influences of personal and physical interaction. With this research trend, this paper is to examine the relationship between safety climate model and safety accident, and the interactional or moderating effect of personal and physical factor on the above relationship. Author conducted a survey to 292 manufacturing workers in construction industry, and the chief results of statistical analysis are as follows 1) management involvement, safety education, precaution activities, and safety system have negative effects on safety accident, 2) a-type personality has interactional effect on safety accident with communication, precaution activities, and safety system. 3) physical job load has interactional effect on safety accident with precaution activities, and safety system.

  • Purpose: In this descriptive study, we aimed to identify factors influencing safe nursing activities of nurses working at public hospitals. Methods: We collected data in March 2021 through an online survey. The subjects were 199 nurses who had worked for at least six months at public hospitals. The self-reported questionnaire consisted of items pertaining to safe nursing activities, perception of patient safety culture, and the general characteristics of the subjects. To examine the differences in the safe nursing activities and perception of patient safety culture by general characteristics, we employed a t-test and ANOVA. We conducted a multiple linear regression analysis to explore the factors affecting safe nursing activities. Results: The mean score for safe nursing activity was 4.59±0.39. Perception of patient safety culture and age group were found to be the main factors affecting the safe nursing activities of nurses working at public hospitals (F=17.24, p<.001, Adj. R2=.40). When the score for perception of patient safety culture increased by 1 point, the score for safe nursing activities increased by 0.58 points. In addition, the score for safe nursing activity in the 40s age group was 0.16 points higher than for those in the 20s age group. Conclusion: Effective management and leadership in public hospitals is needed to improve the culture of patient safety at various levels so as to ensure safe nursing activities.

  • Background: Safety management is required to ensure health and safety of personnel in Norwegian fish farming. However, few studies have addressed the status and practical relevance of this risk-reducing measure. Methods: This article provides new knowledge through interviews with 35 employees at different company levels, addressing perceptions of various safety management activities according to managers and operational personnel. Results: The interviews show that managers and operational personnel at fish farms agree that the quantity of measures aimed to improve safety has increased in recent years. However, some activities are perceived to have higher practical relevance than others. In general, measures that fit well with the practical reality are well received by the employees at the fish farms. Conclusion: Suggested improvements include involving operational personnel in the design of procedures, considering all risk dimensions that may affect occupational health and safety, and challenging the value of specific safety activities based on a detailed knowledge of the distinctive characteristics of work practice in fish farming.
