Safety and quality assessment systems are very important in manufacture, storage, transportation, and handling of hazardous materials(hazmat) to prevent hazmat disasters. At present, hazardous materials exist everywhere in our daily lives with various forms of plastics, household products of cleaning and washing detergents, fertilizers or petroleum-related products. However, hazardous materials are dangerous substances when they are released to human or environment. Hazardous materials become very widely used substances in the age of oil-based industrial economy. The Korean Ministry of Environment (KMOE) describes about one hundred thousand types of chemicals are produced and used worldwide. Over four hundred new chemicals are introduced in every year. A crucial question for the Korean hazardous material management may have been raised: Will you be safe from hazardous material incidents? The gas leak disaster at Union Carbide's Bhopal, India in 1984 that made over 6,400 people killed and 30,000 to 40,000 people seriously injured is the representative case for the safety of hazmat. Korea becomes vulnerable to hazmat disaster due to the development of high-tech industry. Thus, the risk assessment system is required to Korea for transferring abandoned hazmat management systems to self-correcting safety systems. This research analyzed characteristics of various hazmat incidents applying statistical analysis methods including frequency analysis or analysis of category data to hazmat incidents for ten years. All of three analyses of category data indicate the significance of causality between hazmat incident site groups and seasons, regional groups, and incident casualty groups.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the problems arising from the actual conditions of the Foodbank, and to implement the HACCP system as a solution in terms of increasing the safety of donated food within the Foodbank. In order to apply HACCP system, the entire Foodbank working process such as preparation, collection, transportation, division, and distribution was considered and analyzed to decide the application point for CCPs. Donated foods mainly consisted of processed foods, raw materials, lunch boxes, and cooked foods from mass catering establishments, which dominated over the others in terms of quantity. Cooked foods were divided into three groups based on menu-types and processing methods. Temperature, pH, and aw were measured on cooked foods, and Total Plate Count, Coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli O157:H7 were conducted in order to apply a HACCP plan. From these experiments, temperature, pH, and $a_w$ of donated food were likely contributed to microbial growth. Donated foods before HACCP implementation showed high numbers in terms of total plate count and Coliforms, both well over the acceptable standard levels. By setting the CCPs on maintenance of donated food below $10^{\circ}C$ and using a $75^{\circ}C$ reheating method, microbiological hazard levels were able to be controlled and lowered. From these results, it is concluded that in order to guarantee food safety, foods donated to the Foodbank must not only maintain a reasonable level of initial microbiological growth, but also must be handled properly through time and temperature controls within the Foodbank system. Furthermore, in terms of implementing the HACCP plan within the Foodbank management structure, basic food safety and sanitation measures, such as reheating facilities and various cold chain systems such as refrigerated vehicle for food transportation are importantly needed. The training and education of Foodbank personnel and management in areas such as awareness of hygiene and safe food handling and practice are also required and necessary.
Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is the major mariculture fish in Korea. The annual aquaculture production of olive flounder in Korea during the period of 2003 was 300,000 ton (2002 Statistics, Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, Korea Government). Anesthetics is very necessary in aquaculture to minimize stress and damage during harvesting, grading, transportation, spawning induction and handling to fish. In the present study, isoeugenol as new anesthetic in marine fish, especially olive flounder, was examined to know the efficacy and proper concentration. As a result, olive flounder adult was exhibited sedation at 5 ppm at 10 and $15^{\circ}C$, and 7.5 ppm at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. Anesthesia was required at least 10, 7.5 and 10 ppm at $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. In case of fry, the effect of sedation was observed from 2.5 ppm at $10^{\circ}C$ and 5 ppm at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. Anesthesia was observed from 2.5 ppm at $10^{\circ}C$, 5 ppm at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. In acute toxicity test, it was impossible to explore $LD_{50}$ with the concentration of isoeugenol adult at $15^{\circ}C$ used, but over immersion volume of 15 ppm at $15^{\circ}C$ was observed mortality in fry. Based on the present study, isoeugenol was identified as a safe and active anesthetic to olive flounder.
Fluoride-type cleaning agents such as 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFEA) and hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) do not destroy ozone in the stratosphere and have low global warming potential compared to hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). Especially, HFEs which have no flash point are paid attention as next generation type of cleaning agents for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) since they are safe in handling and have excellent penetration ability compared to hydrocarbon cleaning agents with low flash point. Here, the physical properties and cleaning abilities of fluoride-type cleaning agents such as TFEA, HFE-7100, HFE-7200, HFE-476mec, HFE-449mec-f, AE-3000 and AE-3100E and silicide-type cleaning agents such as trifluoroetoxytrimethylsilane (TFES) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) were measured and compared with those of ozone destruction substances such as CFC-113 and 1,1,1-trichloroethane. They were also compared with toxic methylene chloride (MC) and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) which are now being used as an alternative cleaning agents. As a result, TFEA and HFEs had lower cleaning ability for removal of various soils compared to chloride-type cleaning agents, but they showed excellent cleaning ability fur fluoride-type soils. TFES and HMDS also showed excellent cleaning ability for silicide-type soils.
Urushiol extracted from lacquer tree exhibits good thermal stabilities as well as antimicrobial andantioxidant properties. However, it has been known that the urushiol derivates bring out allergy. In this study, polyurushiol (PUOH) powders were successfully synthesized for the safe and convenient handling of allergic urushiol. First, the as-synthesized PUOH was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), antioxidant test and antimicrobial test. And then, six different LDPE/PUOH composite films were prepared via a twin screw extruder system and investigated their feasibility to use as active packaging materials. Their chemical structures, morphology, thermal optical and antimicrobial properties of the LDPE/PUOH composite films were investigated as a function of PUOH contents. FTIR and SEM results showed that LDPE/PUOH composite films have a weak interfacial interaction and poor dispersion with a high PUOH loading. The thermal properties increased up to 3 wt% as the content of PUOH increases. Compared to the pure LDPE films, LDPE/PUOH composite films are more effective in the UV absorbance and antibacterial activity against E. coli. To maximize the performance of LDPE/PUOH compositefilms as the packaging materials, further researches are required to enhance the dispersion of PUOH powders in the LDPE matrix.
For safe conservation treatment of damaged accessory relics that were unearthed, the quality of the material should be accurately identified through a nondestructive analysis and failure analysis. This study provides the basic conservational scientific data regarding material analyses and conservation treatment that were conducted for 11 relics, including amber and agate that were discovered during the repair of Geumsansa Temple's Hall of Maitreya Buddha and Left Attendant Buddhas in June 2008. An ultraviolet analysis, SEM-EDS analysis and FT-IR microscope analysis revealed that the physical and chemical characteristics of the 11 relics are the same as those of amber. It is inferred that the cracks and exfoliation of the surface of most amber relics is attributable to darkening of the color due to C=C bond oxidation. It is also assumed that cracks and exfoliation occurred from the weathered layer on the amber surface. As such, it is appropriate to engage in conservation treatment of the damaged amber relics by using $Paraloid^{(R)}$ B67 reinforcing agent that is diluted in nonpolar solvent. The greatest care is needed for future handling of organic artifacts.
In recent years, with the rapid development of large and medium-sized urban rail transit in China, the total operating mileage of high-speed railway and the total number of EMUs(Electric Multiple Units) are rising. The system complexity of high-speed EMU is constantly increasing, which puts forward higher requirements for the safety of equipment and the efficiency of maintenance.At present, the maintenance mode of high-speed EMU in China still adopts the post maintenance method based on planned maintenance and fault maintenance, which leads to insufficient or excessive maintenance, reduces the efficiency of equipment fault handling, and increases the maintenance cost. Based on the intelligent operation and maintenance technology of PHM(prognostics and health management). This thesis builds an integrated PHM platform of "vehicle system-communication system-ground system" by integrating multi-source heterogeneous data of different scenarios of high-speed EMU, and combines the equipment fault mechanism with artificial intelligence algorithms to build a fault prediction model for traction motors of high-speed EMU.Reliable fault prediction and accurate maintenance shall be carried out in advance to ensure safe and efficient operation of high-speed EMU.
Advances in food packaging play an important role in keeping food manufacturing and food supply safe. Food packaging facilitates the storage, handling, transportation and preservation of food, and also contributes to the minimization of food waste. On the other hand, food packaging materials have high production volumes, short usage times, and accelerate the occurrence of environmental problems related to waste. The circular economy has already been introduced to pursue sustainability through resource conservation and recycling, and to reduce waste and carbon emissions. By activating an eco-friendly economic system that minimizes resource depletion and environmental pollution, reducing, reusing, recycling and redesigning the goals of the circular economy will reduce the impact of food packaging on the environment. This review focused on the safety aspects of recycled food packaging as recycling is currently considered an important means of packaging waste management. Assessing the safety of recycled packaging is very important because recycling can increase the levels of potentially hazardous chemicals in packaging and in the food after they are migrated. Various food packaging materials such as plastic, paper and cardboard, aluminum, steel, and multi-material multi-layers packaging are commonly used, but only the recycling safety of plastic food packaging materials, which is the most used and has a significant increase in post-use problem, is discussed in this review.
This narrative study aims to describe the experience of P.E. assessment that was conducted by P.E. teachers of Korea Science Academy of KAIST, and interpret the educational significance that was found in the process. The study participants were two P.E. teachers who were selected by decisive case sampling method. Data were collected mainly through official interviews with study participants, and through researcher's field notes, informal interviews, various minutes, students' evaluation of teaching, and emails between the researcher and study participants. Data were analyzed through inductive categorization, and to gain veracity of the study, there were integration of diverse materials, advice and suggestions of fellow researchers, continuous confirmation of study texts by study participants. Study participants, while conducting P.E. assessment in Korea Science Academy of KAIST, experienced effectiveness of evaluation such as qualitative development of P,E. classes in accordance with the simplified assessment, freedom from the chores of handling assessment results, students' improved perceptions of P.E. class, realization of safe classes without excessive competition, and the possibility of giving alternative evaluations to pass/fail system but at the same time experienced limitations such as concerns over gaining validity and reliability of P.E. evaluation, the students' attitude who take lightly of P.E. class, and the reality that teachers cannot fail students. The evaluation experiences of the two P.E teachers were educationally interpreted as encounter with good P.E. classes, invitation to P.E. class criticism, and the start of school P.E. culture that is led by students.

To construct a ship, blocks of various sizes must be moved and erected . In this process, lugs are used such that they match the block fastening method and various functions suitable for the characteristics of each shipyard facility. The sizes and shapes of the lugs vary depending on the weight and shape of the block structures. The structure is reinforced by welding the doubling pads to compensate for insufficient rigidity around the holes where the shackle is fastened. As for the method of designing lugs according to lifting loading conditions, a simple calculation based on the beam theory and structural analysis using numerical modeling are performed. In the case of the analytical method, a standardized evaluation method must be established because results may differ depending on the type of element and modeling method. The application of this ambiguous methodology may cause serious safety problems during the process of moving and turning-over blocks. In this study , the effects of various parameters are compared and analyzed through numerical structural analysis to determine the modeling conditions and evaluation method that can evaluate the actual structural response of the lug. The modeling technique that represents the plate part and weld bead around the lug hole provides the most realistic behavior results. The modeling results with the same conditions as those of the actual lug where only the weld bead is connected to the main body of the lug, showed a lower ulimated strength compared with the results obtained by applying the MPC load. The two-dimensional shell element is applied to reduce the modeling and analysis time, and a safety working load was verified to be predicted by reducing the thickness of the doubling pad by 85%. The results of the effects of various parameters reviewed in the study are expected to be used as good reference data for the lug design and safe working load prediction.
