It has been observed in the past that, the reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns are very often subjected to torsional moment in addition to flexure and shear during seismic vibration. Ignoring torsion in the design can trigger unexpected shear failure of the columns (Farhey et al. 1993). Performance based seismic design is a popular design philosophy which calls for accurate prediction of the hysteresis behavior of structural elements to ensure safe and economical design under earthquake loading. However, very few investigations in the past focused on the development of analytical models to accurately predict the response of RC members under cyclic torsion. Previously developed hysteresis models are not readily applicable for torsional loading owing to significant pinching and stiffness degradation associated with torsion (Wang et al. 2014). The present study proposes an improved polygonal hysteresis model which can accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of RC circular and square columns under torsion. The primary curve is obtained from mechanics based softened truss model for torsion. The proposed model is validated with test data of two circular and two square columns. A good correlation is observed between the predicted and measured torque-twist behavior and dissipated energy.

In order to cope with ever growing traffic flow and complexity in the urban area, construction demands for expanding and realigning of existing urban roads and massive development of underground space within the urban area are in its increasing trend, it is fact that, mainly due to lack of statistical data accumulation through real construction, technology and construction practice to support such demands can hardly be said to have been established enough and leave many things still to be developed. These circumstances therefore came to motivate me to get into a study for a particular subject of "Design Basics for Closely Neighbored Twin Tunnel" among others, and also to put forward subjects required to be further studied in this connection in the future as follows: 1) To make a new economical design model for closely neighbored twin tunnel not only to make a drain for center perfect but also a tunnel construction safe. 2) Further efforts should be exerted for establishment of general standards for design and construction of various types of large cross-section tunnels including Twin structure.

In-place analysis for offshore platforms is essentially required to make proper design for new structures and true assessment for existing structures. The structural integrity of platform components under the maximum and minimum operating loads of environmental conditions is required for risk assessment and inspection plan development. In-place analyses have been executed to check that the structural member with all appurtenances robustness and capability to support the applied loads in either storm condition or operating condition. A nonlinear finite element analysis is adopted for the platform structure above the seabed and the pile-soil interaction to estimate the in-place behavior of a typical fixed offshore platform. The analysis includes interpretation of dynamic design parameters based on the available site-specific data, together with foundation design recommendations for in-place loading conditions. The SACS software is utilized to calculate the natural frequencies of the model and to obtain the response of platform joints according to in-place analysis then the stresses at selected members, as well as their nodal displacements. The directions of environmental loads and water depth variations have important effects on the results of the in-place analysis behavior. The result shows that the in-place analysis is quite crucial for safe design and operation of offshore platform and assessment for existing offshore structures.

This paper presents the Safe Shutdown Earthquake(SSE) input motion for the seismic design of the Advanced Power Reactor 1400(APR1400). The Design Ground Response Spectra(DGRS) far the SSE is based on the design spectrum specified in regulatory Guide(RG) 1.60 of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission(US NRC), anchored to a Peak Ground Acceleration(PGA) of 0.3g and enriched in the high frequency range. This SSE seismic input motion is to be applied to the seismic analysis as the free-field seismic motion at the ground surface of both the rock and generic soil sites fur APRI1400. The enrichment for APR1400 seismic input motion is performed considering the current US NRC regulations, the seismic hazard studies performed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LINL) and Electric Power Research Institute(EPRI) for the Central and Eastern United States nuclear power plant sites, and the seismic input motions used in the design certifications of the three existing U.S. advanced standard plants. It is represented by a set of DGRS and the accompanying Target Power Spectral Density(PSD) Function in both the horizontal and vertical directions.
The purpose of a railway track is to provide a smooth surface for safe and economical train transportation. The performance of the track results from a complex interaction of the track and subgrade components in response to train loading and environmental actions. In the past, the role of subgrade as the track foundation were not recognized adequately. There are insufficient information and inadequate methods for subgrade design, assessment and improvement. This situation has survived for a long time largely because a subgrade defect can often be adjusted by adding more ballast under the ties or applying more frequent track maintenance. Therefore, the application of reinforced roadbed technology will be expected to increase in the future. The reinforced roadbed thickness is set depending on subgrade reaction modulus($K_{30}$) in the condition of upper subgrade through PBT in both conventional railroad and KTX railroads. As train velocity (V), train passing tonnage (N), and train axial load (P) are not considered in design, the roadbed thickness could be overestimated (or underestimated). Therefore, in this study has proposed a determination method of reinforced roadbed thickness using design chart made by resilience modulus and properties of earthwork materials.

This paper replaces a conventional austenitic stainless steel sheet to a ferritic stainless steel for the cost reduction of a pulsator cover of a washing machine. However, ferritic stainless steel has poor formability in comparison with austenitic one. The low formability of ferritic steel results in problems during stamping such as fracture, wrinkling, shape inaccuracy and so on. Design modification of the stamping tool is carried out with the aid of the finite element analysis for multistage stamping process of the pulsator cover. The simulation results show that fracture occurs on top of the product while wrinkles are generated by the excess metal near the wing part. Modification of the initial stamping die is performed to improve metal flow and to eliminate problems during the stamping process. Simulation with the modified design fully demonstrates that safe forming is possible without inferiorities.

With the increases in oil and gas prices, and energy consumption, drillship construction has increased during the last decade. A drillship using a dynamic positioning (DP) system to maintain its position and heading angle during drilling operations. In addition, a drillship is equipped with a moonpool structure to allow its drilling systems to be operated in the midship section. A drillship for the North Sea is specially designed to endure harsh environmental loads. For safe operation in the North Sea, the drillship should have good motion response and robust hull strength. A break water should be considered on the bow and side deck to prevent the green water on deck phenomenon from incoming waves. In addition, the moonpool should be designed to reduce the speed loss and resonance motion. In this study, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a drillship for the North Sea were examined in relation to the motion, wave loads, green water, and moonpool resonance in the initial design stage.

Traditional occupant analysis has been performed with a pre-determined crash puse which is produced from a test and the involved components are designed based on the analysis resuls. The method has limitations in that the design does not have much freedom. Howrver, if a good crash pulse is proposed, the body structure can be modified to generate the crash pulse. Therefore, it is assumed that the crash pulse can be changed to imptove the occupant crash performance. A preferable crash pulse is determined to minimize the occupant injuty. A constraint is established to keep the phenomena of physics valid. The response surface method(RSM) is adopted for the optimization process. An RSM in a commercial code is utilzed by interfacing with an in-house occupant analysis program called SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Enviroment). Design of involved components called is carried out through optimization with the RSM. The advantages of the RSM are investigated as opposed to other methods, and the tesults are compared. Also, the design under the new crach pulse is compared with that trom the pre-detetmined pulse.
