  • The small-waterplane-area-twin-hull(SWATH) ship has been recognized as a promising high performance ship because of her superior seakeeping characteristics and large deck area for various operations compared to the conventional monohull ship. significant advances in analytical technics for the prediction of the ship motions, wave loads and structural responses, structural fatigue and its prediction, and hull vibration for ship motions, wave loads and structural responses, structural fatigue and its prediction, and hull vibration for SWATH ship have been much developed during the last twenty years. Based on these developments in technology an integrated computational procedures for prediction wave loads and structural responses can be used to get a accurate results. But the major problem of SWATH ship's structural design is the accurate prediction of structural responses by the maximum critical loads likely to be experienced during the life of SWATH. To get a easier and safer computational procedures and the analytical approach for determining the accurate structural responses, a case study has been presented through the project experienced.

  • Recently, the SWATH concept hull form which is capable of high speed navigation with small oscillatory motions in waves, was developed from the catamaran type hull forms. This paper discribes a method to predict motion responses of a SWATH ship in regular waves using the strip theory. The 2-dimensional hydrodynamic problem was solved using the improved Green integral equation which is free from the irregular frequencies. The effects of viscous drag which is dominant in heave damping of the SWATH ship are taken into account. Further, the effects of the stationary stabilizing fins which is important in high speed performance of the SWATH ship are included in the equation of motions. It seems that the motion responses calculated by the present method show better agreement with experimental results than other existing numerical results.

  • An expert system is a software program that solves problems traditionally solved only by a human expert. An expert system captures and manipulates the knowledge and strategies that a human expert applies to solve a problem. In ship design work, experience and knowledge are very important. If expert system for ship design could be developed, efficiency of design work would be increased very much through use of it. This paper is concerned with a general characteristics of expert system and development of the prototype expert system for ship design-a system which can be utilized to improve the vertical plane stability of SWATH Ship.

  • The calculation method which takes into account the shear lag effects on the ultimate transverse bending moment of a SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) ship has been developed. In case of the ultimate bending strength analysis of conventional monohull ships and general box girder structures, the hypothesis that plane section remains plane after bending can be employed but not in the case of the structures having wide flange. For the ultimate bending strength analysis of such structures, a new method which can take into account the effect of shear lag on the ultimate bending strength has been developed by adopting more reasonable assumption that warping distortion of the section takes place inthe same way as the actual stress distribution. Finally, the proposed method has been applied to a a SWATH cross deck structure.

  • There is at present a growing interest in the use of SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull )ship for a variety of purposes due to their good seakeeping characteristics, small speed reduction in wave, and large deck area. Highly sophisticated design technology is requested to develop the SWATH ship. This paper describes the design technology for high speed coastal passenger SWATH ship which includes feasibility study, general arrangement and hull form design, resistance and propulsion test, motion test in regular waves, control fin design, and structural design.

  • The first - stage study of the three - stage SWATH ship development program of Hyundai Maritime Research Institute has been completed. Various computer programs have been prepared in advance to calculate and predict various properties and characteristics of SWATH ships. With these design tools, theoretical analyses for the systematic variation of design parameters were performed, and step - by - step model tests were carried out to derive the final configuration.

  • The SWATH concept hull form which is capable of high speed navigation with small oscillatory motions in waves, was developed from the catamaran type hull forms. This paper describes how the motion of a SWATH ship in irregular waves can be reduced by regulating the stabilizing fins. The optimal regulator and LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) controller for vertical plane motion have been applied for both platforming mode and contouring mode controls. The calculations of hydrodynamic coefficients and external forces are possible for defining the system equation for the design purpose of motion control. Performances of the controlled system are compared with those of original system.

  • This paper reports theoretical and experimental investigation into the added resistance of SWATH ships in waves. It was revealed from the experimental investigations on various SWATH models that the resistance of the SWATH models in waves is considerably reduced over part of the speed range as the wave height increases. As a first step to Identify it, the first and second order wave forces have been investigated barred on a linearised 3-D diffraction theory together with simplified boundary conditions and same results are reported herein. Also, the speed performance of SWATH ships in rough seas is compared with those of equivalent monohulls as well as with those of advanced high speed marine vehicles.

  • One of good ways to make a ship perform well in rough seas is to reduce its waterplane area and accordingly is subject to a reduced wave exciting forties. However, a great reduction of the waterplane area may create a penalty in speed performance due to the increased ratio of the wetted area to the displacement volume. This paper suggests a new catamaran hull form which compromises the speed and seakeeping quality by increasing the waterplane area somehow compared with that of the conventional SWATH ship. A 350 passenger carrying SWATH ship with a cruising speed of 30 knots in sea state of 4 has been developed and its performance was validated by the model tests. The design concept resistance performance and seakeeping dualities of the design craft are presented together with its comparative performance comparison with other high speed crafts.
