This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of nonpoint source pollutants discharge from a small rural watershed. A typical rural area in Gongju City, Korea, was selected as the research site. Water quality and quantity in streams and rainfall samples were analyzed periodically from May to October 2005. Pollutant loads were estimated from a nonpoint source pollution model (AvSWAT, Arcview Soil and Water Assessment Tool). During the rainy season, from June 26 to 30 September 2005 and the dry season, before 26 June and after 30 September 2005, biological oxygen demands and chemical oxygen demands accounted for 91.3% and 93.7% of annual load, respectively, while total-N and total-P were 97.1% and 91.1% of annual load, respectively. The observed stream flow was $66.5m^3sec^{-1}$, while simulation stream flow was $66.2m^3sec^{-1}$. That can be assumed that simulation can be used to estimate the stream flow without practical measurement. However, the runoff trend following the occurrence of a storm event was not recorded properly.

This study implemented the rainfall-runoff analysis of the Mekong River basin using the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). The runoff analysis was simulated for 2000~2007, and 11 parameters were calibrated using the SUFI-2 (Sequential Uncertainty Fitting-version 2) algorithm of SWAT-CUP (Calibration and Uncertainty Program). As a result of analyzing optimal parameters and sensitivity analysis for 6 cases, the parameter ALPHA_BF was found to be the most sensitive. The reproducibility of the rainfall-runoff results decreased with increasing number of stations used for parameter calibration. The rainfall-runoff simulation results of Case 6 showed that the RMSE of Nong Khai and Kratie stations were 0.97 and 0.9, respectively, and the runoff patterns were relatively accurately simulated. The runoff patterns of Mukdahan and Khong Chaim stations were underestimated during the flood season from 2004 to 2005 but it was acceptable in terms of the overall runoff pattern. These results suggest that the combination of SWAT and SWAT-CUP models is applicable to very large watersheds such as the Mekong for rainfall-runoff simulation, but further studies are needed to reduce the range of modeling uncertainty.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the complementary relationship-based evapotranspiration models, namely, advection-aridity (AA) model of Brutsaert and Stricker and the CRAE model of Morton for estimating actual evapotranspiration. Both models were applied to the Bokhacheon middle-upper watershed, and their estimates were evaluated against the water balance estimate. The calculation was made on a daily basis and comparison was made on monthly and annual bases. For comparison, the water balance estimates were not obtained from the observed precipitation and streamflow data but were based on the simulated data by using integrated watershed model, SWAT-K which is the revised version of SWAT. The reason not to directly use the observed data for water balance estimate is that the credible record period is not sufficient and the streamflow has been altered due to water use and release. Overall, the results showed that both AA model and CRAE model with their original parameters overestimate annual and monthly evapotranspiration, and the large difference between the complementary relationship-based approach and the water balance approach occurs especially for the dry season from Nov. to Mar. It was found out that the parameters, particularly for the advection related parameter, must be recalibrated to accurately produce monthly and annual regional evapotranspiration for this study area.
The availability of groundwater in the Yeoncheon area, South Korea, was estimated using the distributed hydrological model SWAT-K to calculate recharge rates based on land use and soil distribution. Model calibration and validation results were consistent between observed and simulated streamflows, with coefficients of determination of 0.75~0.97. Calculated groundwater recharge rates varied temporospatially, with lower rates in winter and spring than in summer. Estimated recharge rates were compared with the baseflow index of natural streamflow to assess the validity of estimated recharge amounts. Groundwater development potential was determined by calculating the recharge amount for a 10-year period by statistical frequency analysis, confirming it to be 11.5% of annual precipitation.

This study is to evaluated the impact of varying spatial resolutions of DEM (2 m, 10 m, and 30 m), land use (QuickBird, 1/25,000 and Landsat), and soil data (1/25,000 and 1/50,000) on the uncertainty of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) predicted streamflow, sediment, T-N, and T-P transport in a small agricultural watershed ($1.21\;km^2$). SWAT model was adopted and the model was calibrated for a $255.4\;km^2$ watershed using 30 m DEM, Landsat land use, and 1/25,000 soil data. The model was run with the combination of three DEM, land use, and soil map respectively. The SWAT model was calibrated for 2 years (1999-2000) using daily streamflow and monthly water quality (SS, T-N, T-P) records from 1999 to 2000, and verified for another 2 years (2001-2002). The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.59 for streamflow and the root mean square error were 2.08, 4.30 and 0.70 tons/yr for sediment, T-N and T-P respectively. The hydrological results showed that output uncertainty was biggest by spatial resolution of land use. Streamflow increase the watershed average CN value of QucikBird land use was 0.4 and 1.8 higher than those of 1/25,000 and Landsat land use caused increase of streamflow.
To evaluate influence of the future climate change on water environment, it is necessary to use a rainfall-runoff model, or a basin model allowing us to simultaneously simulate water quality factors such as sediment and nutrient material. Thus, SWAT is selected as a watershed-based model and Nakdong river basin is chosen as a target basin for this study. To apply climate change scenarios as input data to SWAT, Australian model (CSIRO: Mk3.0, CSMK) and Canadian models (CCCma: CGCM3-T47, CT47) of GCMs are used. Each GCMs which have A2, B1, and A1B scenarios effectively represent the climate characteristics of the Korean peninsula. For detecting climate change in Nakdong river basin, precipitation and temperature, increasing rate of these were analyzed in each scenarios. By simulation results, flow and increasing rate of these were analyzed at particular points which are important in the object basin. Flow and variation of flow in the scenarios for present and future climate changes were compared and analyzed by years, seasons, divided into mid terms. In most of the points temperature and flow rate are increased, because climate change is expected to have a significant effect on rising water temperature and flow rate of river and lake, further on the basis of this study result should set enhancing up water control project of hydraulic structures caused by increasing outer discharge of the Nakdong River Basin due to climate change.
This study aims to investigate the variation of water quality and discharge under the condition of climate change and Best Management Practices (BMPs), which is one of the reduction methods for non-point source pollution. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is applied to case in Cheongmicheon watershed. The coefficients required for SWAT model were calibrated using SWAT Calibration and Uncertainty Program. Climate change is considered by using Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. It is known from simulation results that the non-point source pollutant increases under the climate change scenario assuming worse condition. It is also found in this study that an appropriate application of BMPs is able to reduce the quantity and temporal variation of non-point source pollutant effectively.

Hydrological models with many parameters and complex model structures require a powerful and detailed model calibration/validation scheme. In this study, we proposed a multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation framework for the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model applied in the Gap-cheon catchment located downstream of the Geum river basin. The sensitivity analysis conducted before main calibration helped understand various hydrological processes and the characteristics of subcatchments by identifying sensitive parameters in the model. In addition, the model's parameters were estimated based on existing data prior to calibration in order to increase the validity of model. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients and correlation coefficient were used to estimate compare model output with the observed streamflow data: $R_{eff}\;and\;R^2$ ranged 0.41-0.84 and 0.5-0.86, respectively, at the Heuduck station. Model reproduced baseflow estimated using recursive digital filter except for 2-5% overestimation at the Sindae and Boksu stations. Model also reproduced the temporal variability and fluctuation magnitude of observed groundwater levels with $R^2$ of 0.71 except for certain periods. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of multi-variable and multi-site method provided high confidence for the structure and estimated parameter values of the model.
In the several decades, various storage facilities have been developed and operated to supply water resource, flood control or environmental preservation etc. Then, how those man-maid storage facilities affect on the downstream water and environment and how the hydrologists can evaluate those features for water resources problem-solving are high-concentrated problems in this field. Most large watersheds in Korea contain various types of artificial facilities such dams, reservoirs, in-land ponds, wetlands etc. But the study to develop the technology for achieving the effect of the variances and properties of the long term streamflow caused by the artificial storage facilities have been on the simple watershed models and experimental modeling in the real fields. In this paper, we introduce the procedure and methods to consider the above problems based on continuous and semi-distributed featured SWAT model. At the first, we describe the elements and mechanisms of storage facilities in SWAT model to see how we can apply that in proper and appropriate manner for real field problems. Then, we applied the process to a sample watershed, Taewha River basin which covers the most of Ulsan region. Specially, we concentrate on our effort to the effect of upper reservoirs on down stream long term flows based on various scenario basis. The result was described and analysed in spacial and temporal variations on that basin using the precise manner.
