Simulation of Forest Succession in Kwangnung Experimental Forest with Gap Model (Gap 모델을 이용한 광릉삼림군락의 천이에 대한 모의 실험)

  • Forest stand development in Kwangnung Experimental Forest, Korea, was simulated with a forest succession gap model of the JABOWA/FORET type, in order to predict climax species and characterime the trend of community structure along the succession. The model runs for a period or 1, 000 yr and is based on the averaged successional characteristics of 50 forest plote with an individual size or 1/12 ha gap consisted of the 15 major tree species. The total bimass and leafarea index have arrived at a steady state since about 200 yr and these values are smaller than that or field survey. Carpinus cordata, C. laxiflora, Quercus mongolica and Q. serrata were epected to be climax species that represent about 86% or total biomass in later stage and these results coincided with the previous succession studies from field survey in the area.

  • To investigate the plant community structure in Pinus densiflora forests of Odaesan National Park, fourty plots(each size was 100m$^{2}$) were set up in Sogumgang and Woljongsa area. The classification by the TWINSPAN and DCA ordination techniques were applied to the survey area. Pinus densiflora forests were divided into five community types, which were Betula schmidtii-Acer pseudosieboldianum-Styrax obassia, Quercus variabilis-S. obassia, Q. serrata-Q. vareabilis, Q. mongolica, Abies holo[hylla. The successional trend of Pinus densiflora forests was seem to be seral stage from Pinus densiflora to Quercus spp.. And Abies holophylla was competition species with Pinus densiflora in Woljongsa area. So, management of Pinus densiflora forests requires to conserve for the diversity of mountain landscape resource and gene science.

A Phytosociological Study of the Forest Communities on Mt. Kwanak, Seoul (관악산의 산림군락에 관한 식물사회학적 연구)

  • As part of the study of the structure and the successional trends of our temperate forests, a quantitative survey was made of the relatively well conserved forest stands on Mt. Kwanak, Seoul. Three community types were observed; the Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, the Pinus densiflora community, and the Quercus mongolica community. Evidence suggests that the dominance of Pinus densiflora and quercus mongolica will continue in the Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, however, in the Pinus densiflora community the dominant species, Pinus densiflora, is now being replaced by Quercus mongolica. The trend toward an increased in Acer pseudo-sieboldianum var. koreanum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus cordita, and Acer mono is observed in the Quercus mongolica community. An analysis of the overall composition of the forest reveals that the upper story is mostly occupied by Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora, the shrub layer by Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Lespedeza maximowiczii, and the herb layer by Spodiopogon cotulifer and Artemisia keiskeana. Quercus mongolica may cover most part of the forest, gradually excluding Pinus densiflora. Acer pseudo-sieboldianum var. koreanum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Carpinus coradata, and Acer mono are increasing in importance with the potentiality of developing into major canopy components. With the diversification of the physical habitat Cephalotaxus koreana and Magnolia sieboldii, the species which had almost completely been eliminated form the forest through the severe interferences, have reappeared.

Succession and Heterogeneity of Plant Community in Mt. Yongam, Kwangnung Experimental Forest (광릉내 용암산 식물군집의 천이와 이질성)

  • In order to study the successional trend and the heterogeneity of forest community, we investigated DBH frequency distribution of dominant tree species and the changes of several community indicies including ${\beta}-diversity\;({\beta}_t)$ along a belt transect in Mt. Yongam, Kwangnung Experimental Forest, which has been preserved for about 530 years. Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, and C. cordata were the three dominant species and their DBH frequency distribution showed a reverse J-shaped form, so these species seem to maintain by themselves. Dominancediversity curve had a lognormal distribution. d and H'for pooled quadrats were 0.13 and 1.09, respectively, but these indices within each quadiat varied with the range of 0.13 to 0.57 and 0.5 to 1.09, respectively. The value of ${\beta}_t$ along the belt transect ranged from 0.14 to 0.42. These results suggest that this forest community is in the stable climax stage but the components experience a heterogeneous microsuccession.

Early Vegetation Succession in Abandoned Field in Cheju Island (제주도 저지대 묵밭 식물군락의 2차 천이)

  • In order to clarify the successional trend and its characteristics of plant community in abandoned field in Cheju Island, we investigated the seral changes of vegetation height, coverage, growth form, species richness, diversity and dominance index along with the time lapse, and then compared with those of mainland researches. And in order to seek the overall trend of vegetation changes, we used cluster, TWINSPAN and PCA ordination techniques. The succession was characterized by the lower species number, lower vegetation height, longer period of herb dominant and later invasion of tree species. These results may come from that ecological traits of Cheju Island itself, and ecosystem fragmented influences that block a seed (propagule) transport. Sere of the dominant species was shown as follows: Mazus japonicus(0.5∼1 years)→Conyza sumatrensis (2 years)→Artemisia princeps var. orientalis(4 years)→Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, indigofera pseudotinctoria(5 years)→Rosa multiflora, Miscanthus sinensis, etc.(8 years)→Miscanthus sinensis(12 years)→Boehmeria nivea, Pueraria thunbergiana etc.(15 years)→Mallotus japonicus(20 years)→Litsea japonica, Machilus thunbergii (20 years<). Abandoned fields were classified into three groups according to time lapse; earlier stage(0∼1 years), middle stage(2∼8 years) and later stage(8∼20 years).

  • To investigate the structure of the plant community of Mt. Jookyup area in Kwangnung forest, thirty-seven plots were set up by the clumped sampling method. The classification by TWINSPAN and two kinds of multivariate ordination(RA, DCA) were applied to the study area in order to classify them into several groups based on woody plants and environmental variables. The classification have been successfully overlayed on an ordination of the same data using DCA. The plots can be classified into five groups by TWINSPAN and DCA. The successional trends of tree species by both techniques seem to be expected two ways in the canopy layer. The first is from Pinus densiflora to Carpinus laxiflora and the second is from Pinus densiflora through Quercus mongolica to Carpinus laxiflora. In the understory layer, it was expected that Rhododendron mucronulatum ${\rightarrow}$Lindera obtusiloba, Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa, Viburunum erasum, Styrax obassia${\rightarrow}$Euonymus sachalinensis, Sorbus alnifolia. As the result of the analysis for the relationship between the stand scores of DCA and environmental variables, they had a tendency to increase significantly from the P. densiflora community to Quercus spp. community that was soil pH, total nitrogen, available phosphate and exchangeable potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium.

Restoration planning of the Seoul Metropolitan area, Korea toward eco-city

  • In order to prepare a basis for ecological restoration of the Seoul Metropolitan area, ecological diagnoses on soil physico-chemical properties and vegetation structure were carried out. Land use patterns, actual vegetation, and biotope patterns were also investigated based on aerial photograph interpretation and field checks. I formulated landscape elements overlaying those data and evaluated the ecological value of each element. Soil pollution was evaluated by analyzing soil samples collected in each grid on the mesh map, divided by 2km $\times$ 2km intervals. Soil samples were collected in forests or grasslands escaped from direct human interference. Soil pollution evaluated from pH, and SO$_4$, Ca, Mg, and Al contents of soil was more severe in the urban outskirts than in the urban center. Those soil environmental factors showed significant correlation with each other. Vegetation in the urban area was different in species composition from that in suburban areas and showed lower diversity compared with that in the suburban areas. Successional process investigated by population structure of major species also showed a difference. That is, successional trend was normal in suburban areas, but that in urban areas showed a retrogressive pattern. The landscape ecological map of Seoul indicates that the urban center lacks vegetation and greenery space is restricted in urban outskirts. Such an uneven distribution of vegetation has caused a specific urban climate and thereby contributed to aggravation of air and soil pollution, furthermore causing vegetation decline. From this result, it was estimated that such uneven distribution of vegetation functioned as a trigger factor to deteriorate the urban environment. I suggested, therefore, a restoration plan based on landscape ecological principles, which emphasizes connectivity and even distribution of green areas throughout the whole area of the Seoul to solve this complex environmental problem. In this restoration plan, first of all, I decided the priority order for connection of the fragmented greenery spaces based on the distances from the core reserves comprised of green belt and rivers, which play roles as habitats of wildlife as well as for improvement of urban environment. Next, I prepared methods to restore each landscape element included in the paths of green network to be constructed in the future on the bases of such preferential order. Rivers and roads, which hold good connectivity, were chosen as elements to play important roles in constructing green network by linking the fragmented greenery spaces.

As a result of the analysis for the relationship between the stand scores of DCA and environmental variables, they had a tendancy to increase significantly from the P. densiflora community to C. cordata community that was soil pH and the amount of humus, total nitrogen and exchangeable cations.

Ecological Changes of the Larix kaempferi Plantations and the Restoration Effects Confirmed from the Results (일본잎갈나무조림지의 생태적 변화와 그 결과를 통해 확인된 복원 효과)

  • Developmental process of vegetation over years after afforestation was analyzed in the Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) plantations with different stand ages. The height and diameter of Japanese larch increased rapidly until 24 years after afforestation and tended to be blunted thereafter. The density of Japanese larch was similar with each other in the 8 and 17 years old stands but was reduced greatly in the 24 years old plantation and changing little thereafter. The floristic composition of the Japanese larch plantation did not show any clear trend depending on stand ages. The differences of species composition among plantation themselves with different ages were bigger than those between plantations and the reference stands, Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) stands. Japanese larch plantations showed a trend of succession to native vegetation dominated by Mongolian oak based on the results of analysis of frequency distribution by diameter class of major tree species. Species richness and diversity of all plantations were higher than those of the reference vegetation. As were shown in the above mentioned results, it can be evaluated that Japanese larch plantations practiced in the level of the functional restoration achieved successful restoration based on the floristic composition similar to the reference vegetation, the successional trend toward native vegetation, and higher species diversity compared with the reference vegetation.

Plant Community Structure Analysis in Gunpo Experimental Forest of Mt. Suri, Kyonggi-do (경기도 수리산 군포시험림 식물군집구조)

  • To investigate the plant community structure in Gunpo Experimental Forest of Mt. Suri, Kyonggi-do, sixty-four plots were set up and surveyed. By DCA ordination technique, sixty-four plots were divided into seven groups. The dividing groups were * Pinus rigitaeda community, P. densiflora community, P. densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, Q. variabilis community, Q. aliena comunity, Q. serrata community, Carpinus laxiflora community. Though the successional trend of seven communities by DCA ordination technique and DBH class distribution analysis was not clearly inferred, * Pinus rigitaeda community and P. densiflora-Q: mongolica community seems to be trended from present state to Q. spp. community. P. densiflora community, Q. variabilis community, Q. aliena community and Q. serrata community seems to be maintained preaent state and C. laxiflora community will be maintainde stable state. Shannon's diversity was 0.7430~1.3025(unit area: 300m$^{2}$) and soil acidity was pH 4.16~5.13 in surveyed areas.
