The STS304 stainless steel was oxidized isothermally and cyclically at temperatures between 1050 and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in air. During isothermal oxidation, it displayed good oxidation resistance at $1050^{\circ}C$. However, it suffered from breakaway oxidation above $1100^{\circ}C$, being accompanied with internal oxidation. During cyclic oxidation, it also displayed good oxidation resistance at $1050^{\circ}C$, but it suffered from massive weight loss above $1125^{\circ}C$. The oxide scales formed consisted primarily of $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ with and without $Cr_2O_3$. They were generally non-adherent.
STS444 with or without $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$ (LSM)-coating was contacted to $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ (LSCF) cathode on various electrolyte materials and the polarization resistance $(R_p)$ was measured by impedance spectroscopy. By making a symmetric half-cell and contacting only one side of the cathode with the interconnect, the effect of chromium (Cr) poisoning was separated from the aging effects. When the LSCF cathode was contacted with LSM-coated STS (stainless steel), $R_p$ of LSCF was lower than that contacted with the uncoated STS. Impedance patterns measured for the working electrode (W.E.), the counter electrode (C.E.) at $600^{\circ}C$ in air were analyzed. Normalized data of net Cr effect showed that $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_2$ (GDC) electrolyte is more tolerant to the chromium poisoning than $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}$ (LSGM) or 8 mol% $Y_2O_3-doped$$ZrO_2$ (YSZ) electrolytes.
We have successfully fabricated high strengthening Cu/STS/Cu 3 layered clad metal of $70kgf/mm^2$ grade for electric device lead frame, and investigated thermal effect of the mechanical and physical properties on the Cu/STS/Cu 3 layered clad metal lead frame material at different temperatures ranging from RT to $200^{\circ}C$. The fabricated clad metal shows a good thermal stability under 6% degrading of mechanical tensile strength and hardness change at $200^{\circ}C$ and also physical properties show stable thermal and electrical conductance of over $220W/m{\cdot}K$ and 58.44% IACS upto the $200^{\circ}$. The results confirm that fabricated high strengthening Cu/STS/Cu 3 layered clad metal can be applied for the high performed electrical lead frame devices.
This study is focused on oxidation prevention of STS430, which is generally used as solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) interconnect at intermediate operating temperatures with oxidation-proof coatings. Inconel, $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCo)$ and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCr)$ were chosen as coating materials. Using a radio frequency magnetron sputtering method, each target material was deposited as thin film on STS430 and was analyzed to find out favorable conditions. In this study, LSCr-coated STS430 can reduce electrical resistance to 1/3 level, compared with uncoated STS430. Also, long-term durability test at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1000 hours tells that LSCr thin layer performs an important role to prohibit serious degradations. Superior oxidation-resistant characteristic of LSCr-coated STS430 is attributed to the inhibition of spinel structure formation such as $MnCr_2O_4$.
In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance at the anode side separator for molten carbonate fuel cell, STS316 and SACC-STS316 (chromium and aluminum were simultaneously deposited by diffusion into STS316 authentic stainless steel substrate by pack-cementation process) were applied as the separator material. In case of STS316, corrosion proceeded via three steps ; a formation step of corrosion product until stable corrosion product, a protection step against corrosion until breakaway occurs, a advance step of corrosion after breakaway. Especially, STS316 would be impossible to use the separator without suitable surface modification because of rapid corrosion rate after formation of corrosion product, occurs the severe problem on stability of cell during long-time operation. Whereas, SACC-STS316 was showed more effective corrosion resistance than the present separator, STS316 due to the intermetallic compound layer such as NiAl, Ni3Al formed on the surface of STS316 specimen. And it is anticipated that, in order to use SACC-STS316 alternative separator at the anode side, coating process, which can lead to dense coating layer, has to be developed, and by suitable pre-treatment before using it, very effective corrosion resistance will be achieved.
The tensile tests to identify the statistical tensile properties and the acoustic emission characteristics were conducted for STS304 stainless steel at $600^{\circ}C,\;700^{\circ}C$. From tensile tests performed by constant cross head speed controls with 1mm/min, rates at each elevated temperature, the scatters were observed in tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation and the acoustic emission parameters. The effect of temperature on the scatter of tensile behavior was larger at $700^{\circ}C$. The distributions of tensile properties was well followed in 3-parameter Weibull. The AE counts and energy of the $700^{\circ}C$ specimens were smaller than the $600^{\circ}C$.
As wrought stainless steel, sintered stainless steel (STS) has excellent high-temperature anti-corrosion even at high temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ and exhibit corrosion resistance in air. The oxidation behavior and oxidation mechanism of the sintered 316L stainless was reported at the high temperature in our previous study. In this study, the effects of additives on high-temperature corrosion resistances were investigated above $800^{\circ}C$ at the various oxides ($SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO and $Y_2O_3$) added STS respectively as an oxidation inhibitor. The morphology of the oxide layers were observed by SEM and the oxides phase and composition were confirmed by XRD and EDX. As a result, the weight of STS 316L sintered body increased sharply at $1000^{\circ}C$ and the relative density of specimen decreased as metallic oxide addition increased. Compared with STS 316L sintered parts, weight change ratio corresponding to different oxidation time at $900^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$, decreased gradually with the addition of metallic oxide. The best corrosion resistance properties of STS could be improved in case of using $Y_2O_3$. The oxidation rate was diminished dramatically by suppression the peeling on oxide layers at $Y_2O_3$ added sintered stainless steel.

We previously reported that the SbROMT3syn recombinant protein catalyzes the production of the methylated resveratrol derivatives pinostilbene and pterostilbene by methylating substrate resveratrol in recombinant E. coli. To further study the production of stilbene compounds in E. coli by the expression of enzymes involved in stilbene biosynthesis, we isolated three stilbene synthase (STS) genes from rhubarb, peanut, and grape as well as two resveratrol O-methyltransferase (ROMT) genes from grape and sorghum. The ability of RpSTS to produce resveratrol in recombinant E. coli was compared with other AhSTS and VrSTS genes. Out of three STS, only AhSTS was able to produce resveratrol from p-coumaric acid. Thus, to improve the solubility of RpSTS, VrROMT, and SbROMT3 in E. coli, we synthesized the RpSTS, VrROMT and SbROMT3 genes following codon-optimization and expressed one or both genes together with the cinnamate/4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase (CCL) gene from Streptomyces coelicolor. Our HPLC and LC-MS analyses showed that recombinant E. coli expressing both ScCCL and RpSTSsyn led to the production of resveratrol when p-coumaric acid was used as the precursor. In addition, incorporation of SbROMT3syn in recombinant E. coli cells produced resveratrol and its mono-methylated derivative, pinostilbene, as the major products from p-coumaric acid. However, very small amounts of pterostilbene were only detectable in the recombinant E. coli cells expressing the ScCCL, RpSTSsyn and SbROMT3syn genes. These results suggest that RpSTSsyn exhibits an enhanced enzyme activity to produce resveratrol and SbROMT3syn catalyzes the methylation of resveratrol to produce pinostilbene in E. coli cells.
Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a promising material for use in many potential applications because of its outstanding physical properties such as high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and super hardness. Even though 316L austenitic stainless steel (STS) has poor wear resistance causing it to be toxic in the body due to wear and material chips, 316L STS has been used for implant biomaterials in orthopedics due to its good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, in the present study, c-BN films with a $B_4C$ layer were applied to a 316L STS specimen in order to improve its wear resistance. The deposition of the c-BN films was performed using an r.f. (13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering system with a $B_4C$ target. The coating layers were characterized using XPS and SEM, and the mechanical properties were investigated using a nanoindenter. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS steel was obtained using a pin-on-disk according to the ASTM G163-99. The thickness of the obtained c-BN and $B_4C$ were about 220 nm and 630 nm, respectively. The high resolution XPS spectra analysis of B1s and N1s revealed that the c-BN film was mainly composed of $sp^3$ BN bonds. The hardness and elastic modulus of the c-BN measured by the nanoindenter were 46.8 GPa and 345.7 GPa, respectively. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS was decreased from 3.5 to 1.6. The wear property of the c-BN coated 316L STS was enhanced by a factor of two.
This study was carried out to identify a high-resolution marker for a gene conferring resistance to brown planthopper (BPH) biotype 1, using japonica type resistant lines. Bulked segregant analyses were conducted using 520 RAPD primers to identify RAPD fragments linked to the BPH resistance gene. Eleven RAPDs were shown to be polymorphic amplicons between resistant and susceptible progeny. One of these primers, OPE 18, which amplified a 923 bp band tightly linked to resistance, was converted into a sequence-tagged-site (STS) marker. The STS marker, BpE18-3, was easily detectable as a dominant band with tight linkage (3.9cM) to Bph1. It promises to be useful as a marker for assisted selection of resistant progeny in backcross breeding programs to introgress the resistance gene into elite japonica cultivars.
