Induction of Integrin Signaling by Steroid Sulfatase in Human Cervical Cancer Cells

  • Steroid sulfatase (STS) is an enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of aryl and alkyl sulfates. STS plays a pivotal role in the regulation of estrogens and androgens that promote the growth of hormone-dependent tumors, such as those of breast or prostate cancer. However, the molecular function of STS in tumor growth is still not clear. To elucidate the role of STS in cancer cell proliferation, we investigated whether STS is able to regulate the integrin signaling pathway. We found that overexpression of STS in HeLa cells increases the protein and mRNA levels of integrin ${\beta}1$ and fibronectin, a ligand of integrin ${\alpha}5{\beta}1$. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), one of the main metabolites of STS, also increases mRNA and protein expression of integrin ${\beta}1$ and fibronectin. Further, STS expression and DHEA treatment enhanced phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) at the Tyr 925 residue. Moreover, increased phosphorylation of ERK at Thr 202 and Tyr 204 residues by STS indicates that STS activates the MAPK/ERK pathway. In conclusion, these results suggest that STS expression and DHEA treatment may enhance MAPK/ERK signaling through up-regulation of integrin ${\beta}1$ and activation of FAK.

과학-기술-사회(S-T-S)교육 도입을 위한 시도 (The Attempt to Introduce Science-Technology-Society(S-T-S) Education to Korean Science Education)

  • According to the rapid change of the modern society, science & technology influences the society significantly. Thus, Korean education, especially the science education must be reviewed in the terms of that, the purpose of this article is to introduce social, environmental context's science education-STS education. STS education is to arise the ability of the democratic decision-making & participating in a discussion. The areas of this are knowledge, process, creativity, attitude, application. Also there are social issues approach & the social studies of science approach in the STS education. The social issues approach is the predominant approach to STS education; the social studies of science approach is often found in the form of goals & objectives for STS education. In order to introduce STS education to Korean science education,this author suggests the following; 1. The relation between science & society in science education must be emphasized more. 2. The study and development of STS education appropriate for Korean society must be preceded. 3. The new course about STS and technical education in the level of college must be developed.

중학교 과학 교과서에 포함된 과학-기술-사회(STS) 내용, 활동 유형 및 포함 정도 분석 (An Analysis of STS Material and Activity in the Middle School Science Textbooks Published by the Sixth Curriculum)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine for middle school science textbooks published by the sixth curriculum to analyze STS material, activity, and space devoted to STS. Because most teachers and students are dependent upon textbooks in teaching and learning, analyzing science textbooks will give basic information to ascertain the extent to which the current school science incorporate STS themes. Results indicated that lots of STS topics in the middle school science text books are related to applications of science. They also revealed that about 3% of the narrative space is devoted to STS topics, with a range of 0.7% to 5.2%. The coverage of STS topics increases as grade level increases.

공통과학 교과서 화학영역의 STS 내용 분석 (An Analysis of STS Contents in the General Science Textbooks(Chemistry Parts) of High School)

  • 본 연구는 제 6차 교육과정에 의해 편찬된 12종의 검인정 공통과학 교과서 중 화학단원에서 전체 지면중 STS 내용의 포함정도를 알아보고 STS 내용을 단원별, Piel의 주제영역별, 활동영역별로 비교분석하였다. 그리고 교과서에 STS와 관련된 내용이 어느 정도 반영?품?있고, 교과서가 교육과정 목표에 어느 정도 부합되는지를 알아보았다. 12종의 공통과학 교과서 화학 영역에서는 STS 교육내용이 교과서 지면의 11.8%에서 33.6%로 평균 24.2%를 차지하고 있었다. STS 내용의 단원별 분포를 보면 현대과학과 가술 단원에 45.5%, 환경단원 38.7%, 에너지단원 29.1%, 물질단원14.0%로 현대과학과 기술단원에 STS에 관련된 내용이 가장 많았다. Piel에 따른 교과서별 STS 주제영역을 비교해 본 결과, 7개의 주제영역중에서 환경문제와 천연자원의 이용이 38.3%, 과학이 과학의 사회학이 29.6%, 기술발달의 영향이 23.6%, 에너지가 7.9%, 인간공학이 0.6%를 차지하고 있으며 인구 그리고 우주개발과 국방에 관련된 주제는 모든 교과서에서 다루고 있지 않았다. STS 주제를 단원별로 분석한 결과를 보면 에너지는 에너지 단원, 환경문제와 천연자원의 이용은 환경단원에 그리고 기술발달의 영향은 현대과학과 가술단원에 대부분 포함되어 있었다. 반면, 과학의 사회학은 전 단원에 걸쳐 골고루 포함되어 羚駭? STS 교육내용을 SATIS의 활동영역에 따라 분석해 보면 조사연구와 사례연구가 대부분이었고 현장활동, 역할놀이, 문제해결과 의사결정은 매우 적은 것으로 나타났다.

온간성형법에 의한 클래드 강판재의 정사각컵 드로잉성 향상에 관한 연구 (Improvement of Square Cup Drawability of Clad Sheet Metal by Warm Forming Technique)

  • This study was performed to investigate the optimized warm forming conditions which gave the maximum drawing depth in square cup drawing of clad sheet metals, by changing the temperatures of die and blankholder and also shapes and materials of blanks. Two kinds of clad sheet metals, STS304-A1050-STS304 and STS304-A1050-STS430 were selected for experiments. The relative drawing depth of STS304-A1050-STS304 clad sheet was increased up to 4.4 at $150^{\circ}C$ that was 29% higher than at room temperature, whereas STS304-A1050-STS430 material was improved to 3.9 at $120^{\circ}C$ which was 15% better than at room temperature. In addition, comparison of wall thickness and hardness of a warm drawn cup with those of room temperature showed more even distributions. No separation between each laminated material after drawing occurred through inspection by microscope as well as application of penetrant test and bond strength test. Therefore, warm forming technique was confirmed to give better results in deep drawing of stainless clad sheet metal.

Ti/Al/STS 클래드재의 접합특성에 미치는 예비 열처리의 영향 (Effect of Pre-Heat Treatment on Bonding Properties in Ti/Al/STS Clad Materials)

  • Titanium/aluminum/stainless steel(Ti/Al/STS) clad materials have received much attention due to their high specific strength and corrosion-resisting properties. However, it is difficult to fabricate these materials, because titanium oxide is easily formed on the titanium surface during heat treatment. The aim of the present study is to derive optimized cladding conditions and thereupon obtain the stable quality of Ti/Al/STS clad materials. Ti sheets were prepared with and without pre-heat treatment and Ti/Al/STS clad materials were then fabricated by cold rolling and a post-heat treatment process. Microstructure of the Ti/Al and STS/Al interfaces was observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and an Energy Dispersed X-ray Analyser(EDX) in order to investigate the effects of Ti pre-heat treatment on the bond properties of Ti/Al/STS clad materials. Diffusion bonding was observed at both the Ti/Al and STS/Al interfaces. The bonding force of the clad material with non-heat treated Ti was higher than that with pre-heat treated Ti before the cladding process. The bonding force decreased rapidly beyond $400^{\circ}C$, because the formed Ti oxide inhibited the joining process between Ti and Al. Bonding forces of STS/Al were lower than those of Ti/Al, because brittle $Fe_3Al$, $Al_3Fe$ intermetallic compounds were formed at the interface of STS/Al during the cladding process. In addition, delamination of the clad material with pre-heat treated Ti was observed at the Ti/Al interface after a cupping test.

  • Fe-Cr steels are the most promising candidate for interconnect in solid oxide fuel cells. In this study, an effective, dense and well adherent (LaSr)(CrCo)$O_3$ [LSCC] coating layer was produced onto 430 stainless steel (STS-430) by atmospheric plasma spraying and the oxidation behavior as well as electrical properties of the LSCC coated STS-430 were investigated. A significant oxidation of pristine STS-430 occurred at $800^{\circ}C$ in air environment, leading to the formation of $Cr_2O_3$ and $FeCr_2O_4$ scale layer up to ${\sim}7{\mu}m$ after 1200h, and consequently increased an area specific resistance of $330\;m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$. Although the plasma sprayed LSCC coating contained the characteristic pore network, the coated samples presented apparent advantages in reducing oxidation growth of STS-430, resulting a decrease in oxide scale thickness of ${\sim}1{\mu}m$ at $800^{\circ}C$ after 1200h. The area specific resistance of the LSCC coated STS-430 was much reduced to ${\sim}7\;m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ after exposure at $800^{\circ}C$ for 1200h, compared to that of the pristine STS-403.

천연해수 용액에서 STS 304와 용융 알루미늄 도금된 STS 304의 캐비테이션-침식 환경 하에서의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Characteristics under Cavitation-Erosion Environment of STS 304 and Hot-Dip Aluminized STS 304 in Sea Water Solution)

  • In this paper, the characteristics of a cavitation-erosion damage behavior on the STS 304 and hot-dip aluminized STS 304 under cavitation environment in sea water solution was investigated. The electrochemical experiments were carried out by potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization test, Tafel analysis, and also galvanostatic experiment in current density variables for the samples. The apparatus of cavitation-electrochemical experiment was manufactured in compliance with modified ASTM G-32 standard, with the conditions of sea water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and the measurement, amplitude of $30{\mu}m$. The damage behavior was analyzed by an observation of surface mophologies and a measurement of damage depth by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and a 3D microscope, respectively, after electrochemical test. After polarization experiment under cavitation environment, much higher damage depths for the hot-dip aluminized STS 304 were observed comparing to the untreated STS 304. In addition, higher corrosion current density in hot-dip aluminized STS 304 presented than that of untreated STS 304 as a result of Tafel analysis.

고밀도 STS316L 합금 적층 성형체의 제조공정 최적화 및 인장 특성 연구 (Study on the optimization of additive manufacturing process parameters to fabricate high density STS316L alloy and its tensile properties)

  • STS316L 합금의 Laser powder bed fusion 공정 최적화를 위하여 Laser power, Scan speed 및 Hatching distance의 공정조건을 제어하면서 투입 레이저 에너지 밀도와 조형체의 상대밀도와의 상관관계를 연구했고, 최적조건으로 제작된 조형체의 적층 방향에 따른 인장특성 변화를 분석했다. STS316L 분말을 에너지밀도가 55.6 J/mm3, 83.3 J/mm3 및 111.1 J/mm3인 조건에서 적층 성형한 결과, 투입 레이저 에너지밀도가 83.3 J/mm3이며, Power 및 Scan speed 각각 225 W, 1000 mm/s인 조건에서 가장 안정적으로 고밀도 STS316L 샘플을 제작할 수 있었다. 최적공정조건을 이용해 적층 방향과 인장방향이 각각 0°, 45°, 90°인 인장시험편을 제작하여 인장특성을 비교한 결과 적층 방향과 인장방향이 수직인 시험편의 항복강도, 인장강도 및 연신율이 가장 우수한 것이 확인되었다. 적층 방향과 수직 방향으로의 이방성을 가지는 기공 및 Lack of fusion 결함이 응력집중을 야기하여 인장특성을 열화 시키기 때문인 것으로 추정된다.

Effects of sit-to-stand imagery group training on balance performance in individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke: a randomized control trial

  • Objective: To evaluate the effects of sit-to-stand (STS) imagery group training (IGT) on STS movement and balance performance for chronic hemiparetic stroke. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 30 people with chronic hemiparetic stroke (15 for STS-IGT group and 15 for control) were recruited in this study. The STS-IGT group participated in a videotape-based STS-IGT for 30 minutes a day, five days a week for six weeks, while the control group watched a documentary on television for the same period. The STS-IGT focused on a five-stage protocol. Specifically, external imagery was used during the four phases of the STS movement from the seat of the chair to standing up. All of the participants also participated in a regular rehabilitation program. STS movement and balance performance were assessed using three clinical measures. Results: After training, time to perform the 5-repetition STS test significantly increased in the STS-IGT group (change value, $4.0{\pm}2.0$ sec) compared with the control group (change value, $0.9{\pm}0.7$ sec) (p<0.05). There was a greater improvement in Berg balance scale scores in the STS-IGT group (change value, $0.2{\pm}4.1$ points) compared with the control group (change value, $0.3{\pm}0.9$ points) (p<0.05). There was a greater improvement in Timed Up and Go scores in the STS-IGT group (change value, $2.6{\pm}1.5$ sec) compared with the control group (change value, $0.9{\pm}1.0$ sec) (p<0.05). Conclusions: STS-IGT can be considered as a useful option for restoration of STS movement and balance performance for individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke who are unable to fully participate in physical activities.
