  • In this study, through the analysis of the growth condition and prey of the largemouth bass, we tried to understand the characteristics of the aquatic animal community depending on the composition and shape of a artificial lake. The evaluation was conducted for Ilsan lake which is one of the largest urban artificial lakes in Korea. Weight gain rate of the Zone III (eco-zone) was more rapid based on the relationship of length and weight of largemouth bass. Total 16 and 9 species of fish were found in each Zone III and Zone I, II (artificial zones), which represented significantly higher diversity of fish species in Zone III than Zone I, II. Index of relative importance(IRI) was more diverse at Zone III and when considering the hunger rate the food stress was more serious at Zone I, II. the proportion of the population of fish, Zacco platypus revealed to be the dominant species, and Squalidus gracilis majimae and Rhinogobius brunneus inhabited only Zone III naturally rich. On account of low prey species diversity of Zone I, II, the Phylum Arthropoda like Heteroptera showed relatively higher prey ratio in stomach of largemouth bass than that of Zone III. It was possible to figure out aquatic animal community characteristics indirectly through analyzing the stomach contents of largemouth bass.

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary moisture content on the growth and gastrointestinal evacuation of sub-adult olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in the summer and winter seasons. In the first experiment, three experimental diets containing different moisture levels (7%, 15%) and additives were prepared by adding water and commercial additives (1% nutrients, 1% digestives) to commercial extruded pellets. Fish (initial weight: $332{\pm}9.2$ g) were distributed randomly into six 3000 L tanks (25 fish/tank) in a flow-through tank system. Two replicate groups of fish were fed the experimental diets to satiation for 14 weeks during the summer season ($21.4{\pm}2.5^{\circ}C$). Survival, weight gain, feed efficiency, and daily feed intake did not differ significantly among groups. In the second experiment, two experimental diets containing different moisture levels (8%, 23%) were prepared by adding water to commercial extruded pellets. Fish (initial weight: $646{\pm}6.7$ g) were randomly distributed into six 3000 L tanks (20 fish/tank) in a flow-through tank system. Three replicate groups of fish were fed the experimental diets to satiation for 19 weeks during the winter season ($12.2{\pm}1.2^{\circ}C$). Weight gain, feed efficiency, and daily feed intake did not differ significantly among groups. Gastrointestinal evacuation rates were determined after the end of the winter feeding trials. The stomach contents of fish fed diets containing different moisture levels peaked within 3 h after feeding and then decreased gradually over 40 h to approach pre-feeding levels. Intestinal contents began to accumulate 3 h after feeding and reached a maximum at 32 h, then declined until nearly complete evacuation around 56 h. The stomach contents reached moisture levels of approximately 70% within 3 h after feeding and then increased gradually. No considerable difference in moisture levels was observed in the stomach contents of fish fed diets with different moisture contents. The results of this study suggest that the gastric evacuation of sub-adult olive flounder was not affected by dietary moisture level and the addition of water to the diet had no beneficial effect on the growth of sub-adult olive flounder in the summer and winter seasons.

  • The aim of this study is to compare the differences of influencing factors and subjective digestive symptoms among upper gastrointestinal disease groups. Subjects of this study are the results of Helicobactor Pylori test, gastrofibroscopic findings, and the electronic data of medical questionnaires on individuals at the age of 20 to 79 who visited a Health Promotion Center in Seoul from October, 2003 to October, 2004. 2,708 cases are analysed for final with $x^2$ test and ANOVA test. The sociodemographic factors of sex, age and occupation, the living habits factors of smoking and drinking, the pathophysiological factor of H. pylori infection, and the psychological factor of stress show statistically significant differences among groups. The digestive symptoms of "the feeling of something remained in the stomach", "the burning feeling right after eating or at the empty state of stomach" and "the frequent reflux of watery acid from the stomach" show statistically significant differences among groups. This study provides meaningful data in finding distinctive features of each disease and will be applied as basic materials to the development of intervention methods for health promotion relating to the upper gastrointestinal diseases.

  • Feeding habits of A. luridus were studied by analyzing the stomach contents of monthly collected fish from the intertidal zone of Dodun-ri, Sochon from July 1996 to June 1997. Fullness of stomach increased twice a day, first in the morning and second in the afternoon. A. luridus (1.2-5.9 em in standard length) was a carnivore consuming mainly decapods (natantia larvae, Acetes japonicus, Penaeus japonicus and reptantia larvae), amphipods (caprellids, gammarids and hyperiids) and copepods (Acartia sp., Calanus sinicus, Corycaeus affinis, and Microsetella sp.). Its diets also included minor quantities of isopods, cirriped larvae, polychaete larvae and stomatopods. According to fish size, some changes in feeding habits were apparent, i.e. smaller fish preferred to prey in the following order : copepods < decapods < amphipods. However, as the size increased, decapods and amphipods were selected.

  • Stomach contents of bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, and yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, caught by longlining in the western tropical Pacific were analyzed to examine their foods and to compare their feeding behavior. The food species of both bigeye and yellowfin tunas were primarily fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods. A total of 15 fish, 6 crustacean, and 1 cephalopod species were identified from their stomach contents, of which lantern fish (Myctophum sp.) was the most important food for both tuna species. No significant differences in species composition of food items between bigeye and yellowfin tunas were observed, indicating that in the same habitat the tunas have a similar feeding behavior. However, while they showed a remarkable similarity in diet composition, significant quantitative differences on the basis of IRI values were observed in several diet species, such as Myctophidae, Alepisauridae, Oplophoridae, Gammaridae, and Onychoteuthidae.

  • Feeding habits of dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus, were analyzed. Fish samples were collected by using a purse seine, fishing and set net in the southern sea of Korea from January to December 2015. The size of C. hippurus ranged from 23.8 to 127.4 cm in fork length. The species with the highest percent index of relative importance (%IRI; the most important prey taxa) in the diets of C. hippurus were teleosts and cephalopod, including Engraulis japonicus, Thamnaconus modestus and Trachurus japonicus, Loligo edulis was the most frequently consumed cephalopods. Coryphaena hippurus also ate small amounts of amphipods and carid shrimp. The dietary compositions of C. hippurus was not significantly different among size classes or seasons (ANOSIM, P>0.05). As body size of C. hippurus increased the mean number of prey per stomach (mN/ST) tended to decrease, but the opposite trend was evident for mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST). The mN/ST and mW/ST also significantly varied with season (one-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • The feeding habits of the Pacific herring Clupea pallasii were examined based on 333 specimens collected from the coastal waters of the East Sea of Korea. Sampling was conducted in April, June, and September 2019 and February 2020. The total length of the C. pallasii ranged from 11.9 cm to 37.7 cm. Euphausiids (93.0%, index of relative importance, IRI), especially Euphausia, comprised the primary diet of the pacific herring, in addition to amphipods, copepods, and fishes. The dietary composition of C. pallasii showed non-significant differences by size. As body size of C. pallasii increased, the mean number of preys per stomach (mN/ST) and the mean weight of preys per stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase.

  • A 14-year-old girl was admitted to the emergency department for excessive bile-containing vomiting and severe abdominal pain. She had been healthy until she intentionally lost 25 kg over a 6-month period. Thick, bloody bile-mixed food particles were drained from the stomach through a nasogastric tube. Abdominal computed tomography revealed huge stomach dilatation with extensive gastric pneumatosis, possible near rupture, acute pancreatitis, and a very narrow third of the duodenum, indicating superior mesenteric syndrome. Gastrofibroscopy revealed multiple hemorrhagic ulcers and numerous beadlike cystic lesions in the stomach. Laboratory examination results were notable for severe deficiencies in critical nutrients, including iron, zinc, proteins, and prealbumin, as well as undernutrition-associated endocrine complications such as hypothyroidism and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Excessive vomiting ceased after the endoscopic removal of stagnant gastric contents. Gastric pneumatosis improved after 3 days of supportive care.

  • Human and animals are living by acclimation to environmental changes like high and cold temperature, nose, confinement, etc. If the above changes reach a defined levels, some physiological abnormal state could appear, which we call them as stress state. Catecholamines are excreted by the sympathetic-adrenomedullary system in free from in urine. Catecholamines are derived from the adrenal medulla and urinary epinephrine can be taken as a rough estemation of the activity of this gland. Many scientist reported the endocrinological change, excretion of catecholamine and its metabolites, stomach ulcer formation, etc. under the condition of the confinement and high temperature. In this study author gave restraint, electric shock and immersion stress to rats by administrating by HPLC and got the following results. 1. In the restriant experiment, epinephrine contents in control rat was 194.7 ng, but in Bohyulanshintang administered rat urine 198.9 ng of epinephrine was found. 2. In the electrical shock experiment, 199.5 ng of epinephrine was found in the control rat urine, but in Bohyulanshintang administered rat urine epinephrine content was 142.4 ng. 3. Dopamine contents in control rat urine the immersion environment was 118.9 ng, but in Bohyulanshintang administered rat urine only 55.2 ng of dopamine was found. 4. Incontrol rat stomach there appeared focal erosion and inflamatory exudate, but in experimental group these symptom were turned to mild condition.

  • Feeding habits of juvenile Sillago maculata, collected from the tropical seagrass beds in Cockle Bay, Queensland, were studied. S. maculata (0.5~9.5 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly gammarid amphipods, crabs and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of polychaetes, shrimps, fishes, isopods and cumacean. S. maculata showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals preyed mainly on copepods, crab larvae and gammarid amphipods. While the portion of the stomach contents attributable to polychaetes, crabs and fishes increased with increasing fish size, consumption of copepods and crab larvae decreased progressively. Gammarid amphipods were the most selected prey item for all size classes.
