The Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) is the first of a new generation of infrared instruments with high sensitivity, high spectral resolution, and broad spectral grasp. IGRINS, a joint project of the University of Texas and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, designed and constructed by a team at UT, KASI, and Kyung Hee University, has been available to the Korean and Texas communities on the McDonald Observatory 2.7m telescope since 2014 September. On this modest-sized telescope, the instrument has 30 times the spectral grasp of CRIRES at the 8m VLT and is only slightly less sensitive. Already, Korean and UT astronomers have produced a raft of new results in star formation studies, investigations of the interstellar medium, and the nature of cool stars. Several programs are under way to detect and study the atmospheres of exoplanets. We will present highlights from the first 6 months of IGRINS operations and look at the future of IR spectroscopy both with IGRINS and with GMTNIRS, a UT/KASI/KHU instrument for the Giant Magellan Telescope.
The NGC 1333 IRAS 4B region is observed in the 6.9 mm and 1.3 cm continuum with an angular resolution of about 0.4 arcseconds. IRAS 4BI is detected in both bands, and BII is detected in the 6.9 mm continuum only. The 1.3 cm source of BI seems to be a disk-like flattened structure with a size of about 50 AU. IRAS 4BI does not show any sign of multiplicity. Examinations of archival infrared images show that the dominating emission feature in this region is a bright peak in the southern outflow driven by BI, corresponding to the molecular hydrogen emission source HL 9a. Both BI and BII are undetectable in the mid-IR bands. The upper limit on the far-IR flux of IRAS 4BII suggests that it may be a very low luminosity young stellar object.

Understanding the birth and evolution of galaxies, and the history of star formation in them, is one of the most important problems in astronomy. Using the data from the AKARI IRC survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at 3.2, 7, 11, 15, and $24{\mu}m$, we have constructed a multi-wavelength catalog containing data from the cross-correlation with a number of other databases at different wavelengths. We present the first approach with a Support Vector Machine (SVM)-based method to separate different classes of stars in LMC in the color-color and color-magnitude diagrams.
I will present a new approach to constrain galaxy physical parameters from the combined interpretation of stellar and nebular emission in wide ranges of observations. This approach relies on a comprehensive library of synthetic spectra, assembled using state-of-the-art models of star formation and chemical enrichment histories, stellar population synthesis, nebular emission and attenuation by dust. We focus on the constraints set by 5-band photometry and low- and medium-resolution spectroscopy at optical rest wavelengths on a few physical parameters characterizing the stars and interstellar medium. Since these parameters cannot be known a priori for any galaxy sample, we assess the accuracy to which they can be retrieved by simulating 'pseudo-observations' using models with known parameters. We find that the combined analysis of stellar and nebular emission in low-resolution (50A FWHM) galaxy spectra provides valuable constraints on all physical parameters. The approach can be extended to the analysis of any type of observation and during this talk i will present some applications to observed galaxies up to redshift 1.5.
We present our AKARI study of massive star forming regions where a large-scale cloud-cloud collision possibly contributes to massive star formation. Our targets are Spitzer bubbles, which consist of two types of bubbles, closed and broken ones; the latter is a candidate of the objects created by cloud-cloud collisions. We performed mid- and far-infrared surface photometry toward Spitzer bubbles to obtain the relationship between the total infrared luminosity, $L_{IR}$, and the bubble radius, R. As a result, we find that $L_{IR}$ is roughly proportional to $R^{\beta}$ where ${\beta}=2.1{\pm}0.4$. Broken bubbles tend to have larger radii than closed bubbles for the same $L_{IR}$.

The point sources in the Bright Source Catalogue of the AKARI Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) were classified based on their FIR and mid-IR fluxes and colours into young stellar object (YSO) and extragalactic source types using a Quadratic Discriminant Analysis method (QDA) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). The reliability of the selection of YSO candidates is high, and the number of known YSO candidates were increased significantly, that we demonstrate in the case of the nearby open cluster IC348. Our results show that we can separate galactic and extragalactic AKARI point sources in the multidimensioal space of FIR fluxes and colours with high reliability, however, differentiating among the extragalactic sub-types needs further information.
Dwarf galaxies are the most common type of galaxy in the universe and believed to be basic building blocks of the large scale structures. In order to understand the formation history of these galaxies, we selected two well-observed galaxies in the Local Group and constructed the stellar population models including HB stars. We employed Y$^2$ Isochrones (Yi et al. 2001) and HB tracks (Yi et al. 1997) for stellar population synthesis. Our models show that (1) the Carina dSph has several distinct populations with age of ∼10.5, 5.8, 4.1, 2.8 and 1.0 Gyrs, and (2) stellar populations of the Sextans dSph are constructed in terms of the two populations with age of ∼ 11 and ∼2.5 Gyrs. Observational data were kindly provided by Lee et al. (2003, in preparation) and Monelli et al. (2003) for Sextans and Carina dsphs, respectively.
We classified Abell clusters using the magnitude differences between two or three bright member galaxies and investigated how such classification was correlated with the properties of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). S-type BCGs being clearly brighter than the rest of the member galaxies were likely to be red, luminous, and evolved as early type galaxies. On the other hand, T-type BCGs being not dominant at all were less luminous than early type galaxies. A small fraction of BCGs was currently forming stars, and all of the star-forming BCGs were T-type BCGs. Active galactic nuclei were most frequent for S-type BCGs. Through these quantitative analyses of the BCG properties, we discussed the possible scenario of BCG formation and the differences between S-type and T-type of BCGs.
Symbiotic stars and quasars exhibit prominent $H{\alpha}$ emission lines often accompanied with broad wings. $H{\alpha}$ emission nebulae in these objects are proposed to be optically thick to resonance scattering. The transfer of $H{\alpha}$ line photons are further complicated by the existence of another scattering channel leading to re-emission of $Ly{\beta}$. In this work are develop a Monte Carlo code to simulate the transfer of $H{\alpha}$ line photons incorporating the scattering channel into $Ly{\beta}$. We show various line profiles of $H{\alpha}$ and $Ly{\beta}$ emergent from our model nebulae. It is shown that temperature is a critical parameter which controls the ratio of emergent $Ly{\beta}$ flux to that of $H{\alpha}$.
About 50% of stars reside in binary or multiple systems. However, the formation mechanism of the multiplicity is poorly understood. Theoretical studies suggest two main mechanisms for the multiplicity: turbulent fragmentation and disk fragmentation. We can testify which mechanism is more plausible by measuring the separation between companions or the alignment of stellar spins. Here we present our ALMA Cycle 2 observational results of a proto-binary system, IRAS 04191+1523, which consists of two Class I sources. We detected disks around both Class I sources, which are located in a common dense filamentary structure traced by $C^{18}O$ J=2-1. Two protostellar disks are separated by ~900 AU and their rotational axes are almost perpendicular, which strongly support that this binary system formed by the turbulent fragmentation.
