  • STACOM will be utilized to control substation voltage in the near future. Although STACOM shows good voltage regulation performance owing to its rapid and continuous response, it needs additional reactive power compensation device to keep control margin for emergency such as fault. ULTC transformer is one of good candidates. This paper presents a Kohonen Neural Network (KNN) based coordination control scheme of ULTC transformer and STACOM. In this paper, the objective function of the coordination control is minimization of both STACOM output and the number of switchings of ULTC transformer while maintaining substation voltage magnitude to the predefined constant value. This coordination, control is performed based on reactive load trend of the substation and KNN which offers optimal tap position in view of STACOM output minimization. The input variables of KNN are active and reactive power of the substation, current tap position, and current STACOM output. The KNN is trained by effective Iterative Condensed Nearest Neighbor (ICNN) rule. This coordination control applied to IEEE 14 bus system and shows satisfactory results.

  • In this research project, two aspects of small signal stability are studied: improvement in Hessenberg method to compute the dominant electromechanical oscillation modes and siting FACTS devices to damp the low frequency oscillation. Fourier transform of transient stability simulation results identifies the frequencies of the dominant oscillation modes accurately. Inverse transformation of the state matrix with complex shift equal to the angular speed determined by Fourier transform enhances the ability of Hessenberg method to compute the dominant modes with good selectivity and small size of Hessenberg matrix. Any specified convergence tolerance is achieved using the iterative scheme of Hessenberg method. Siting FACTS devices such as SVC, STACOM, TCSC, TCPR and UPFC has been studied using the eigen-sensitivity theory of augmented matrix. Application results of the improved Hessenberg method and eigen-sensitivity to New England 10-machine 39-bus and KEPCO systems are presented.

  • In Jeju power sytstem, the generation of reactive power depends on the operation of CSC-HVDC filter. Thus, the grid voltage will be affected. Statcom and SVC have demonstrated that it has excellent charateristics to solve this problem. First, this paper analyzes the operation of the Statcom based on the real power system in Jeju. Then, the characteristics of Statcom will be compared to the SVC. The modelling of the Jeju power system including Statcom and SVC will be performed by using PSCAD/EMTDC program and the real data from the real Jeju power system.

  • The electric traction systems are quite differ from general power systems which is single-phase and heavy load. Therefore, there are inevitably power quality problems such as steady state or transient voltage drop, voltage imbalance and harmonic distortion. Among these problems, since steady-state volatge drop is the one of most important factor in electric power quality, many researches about on the compensation of volatge drop by using SVC(Static Var Compensator) and/or STACOM(Static Compensator) have been studied and proposed Also, it is expected that transient voltage drop(voltage sag) could affect the control and safety of high speed traction load. In this paper, voltage sag compensation of AT(Auto Transformer) feeding system are studied The detailed transient models of utility source, scott transformer, AT, and traction load are estabilished. The application of DVR(Dynamic Voltage Restorer) in electric traction system is proposed to compensate the voltage sag of traction network which is occured by the fault of utility source. It can be shown that application of the DVR in electric traction system is very useful to compensate the volatge sag from the result of related simulation works.
