  • Objectives: To investigate the effects of Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture on the blood picture and antioxidative activity in rats. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups; normal control (n=5), pharmacopuncture at CV12 (CV12 group, n=5), and pharmacopuncture at ST36 (ST36 group, n=5) once every other day for 4 weeks. Blood cell counting was performed and liver superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were analyzed. Results: Values of red blood cell and plasma cell volume were significantly higher in the ST36 group than the normal control. Values of hematocrit, total protein, and albumin were not significantly different among groups. White blood cell count and the percentage of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and eosinophils were not significantly different among groups. However, monocytes and basophils were significantly increased in the ST36, and CV12 groups, respectively. SOD and CAT in the CV12 and ST36 groups were significantly activated than in the normal control group, while the activity of GSH-Px showed no significant difference among groups. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, Hominis placenta pharmacopuncture may have positive impact on antioxidative capacity, thus activate various functions of the body.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of various concentrations of Hwangnyeonhaedok-tang (HTT) pharmacopuncture on ST25 (天樞) in rats with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. Methods Colitis was experimentally induced by feeding rats with water mixed with 5% (w/v) DSS for 20 days. The rats were divided into 5 groups: the normal group (Nor, n=5), the control group - colitis induced rats with no treatment (Con, n=5), the acupuncture group - colitis induced rats with acupuncture applied on ST25 (Acu, n=5), the pharmacopuncture group 1 - colitis induced rats with 0.729 mg/250 g/40 μl of pharmacopuncture applied on ST25 (PA-1, n=5), the pharmacopuncture group 2 - colitis induced rats with 3.645 mg/250 g/40 μl of pharmacopuncture applied on ST25 (PA-2, n=5). The changes in weight, excrement concentration and hemafecia were observed 5 times every 2 days. The colon lengths were measured from appendix to the end of colon after the experiment. Hematological and serological exams were conducted the day after the last treatment by cardiac puncturing anesthetized rats. Results ST25 is the abdominal front point (募穴) of large intestine meridian and is known to have effect in colitis. Various concentrations of HTT pharmacopuncture (HTTP) applied on ST25, in rats with DSS-induced colitis inhibited decrease in colon lengths and body weight in both PA-1 and PA-2 groups. Hematological and serological exam results also showed that HTTP has significant effect on colitis in both PA-1 and PA-2 groups. Conclusions Colon lengths were significantly increased in the acupuncture group, PA-1 group and PA-2 group, compared to the control group. The body weight was significantly increased (p<0.05) in PA-2 group after the first treatment, compared to the control group. TNF-α, IL-6, AST were significantly decreased in PA-1 and PA-2 groups, compared to the control group.

  • This study was carried out in 1979 to establish the proper mulching culture method for an aromatic tobacco, ST 375-4. Three different methods of mulching were employed: Improved mulching (I. M.), General mulching (G. M.) and Non-mulching (N. M.). The number of seedlings per hole was 5 for I. M., and one for G. M. and N. M. In comparison with N. M., I. M. had shortened final date of leaf harvest by 14 days, enabling curing leaves before the rainy season. It also reduced transplanting labour hours by 44.9%. Yield and price value increased with improved mulching culture. There was little difference in relative light intensity at leaves between N. M. and I. M.

  • The chromosome numbers of two species (Culter brevicauda and Erythroculter erythropterus) of Korean Cultrinae are investigated. In two species, the mitotic chromosomes from 24 groups with two chromosomes each indicated that it is a diploid. Their karyotypes and total length of chromosomes were slightly different from each other. The karyotype of C. brevicauda and E. erthropterus is 2n=48 (7M+10SM+7ST), FN=96 and 2n=48 (6M+10SM+8ST), FN=96. Observed chromosomes of C. brevicauda and E. erythropterus ranged from 5.4 to $2.2{\mu}m$ and 6.1 to $2.3{\mu}m$ in length, respectively.

  • Background: To evaluate the location of tumor relapse and imaging modality for detection according to the breast cancer subtype: luminal A, luminal B, HER2 positive luminal B, nonluminal HER2 positive, and triple negative. Materials and Methods: A total of 1244 patients with breast cancer with known estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), Ki-67 and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), who underwent breast surgery from 2009 to 2012 were analyzed. Patients were classified into the following categories: luminal A (n=458), luminal B (n=241), HER2 positive luminal B (n=227), nonluminal HER2 positive (n=145) and triple negative (n=173). A total of 105 cases of relapse were detected in 102 patients: locoregional recurrence (n=46), recurrence in the contralateral breast (n=28) and distant metastasis (n=31). Comparison of proportions was used to determine the difference between subtypes. Results: Relapse rates by subtypes are as follows: luminal A 23 of 458 (5.02%), luminal B 19 of 241(7.88%), HER2 positive luminal B 15 of 227 (6.61%), nonluminal HER2 postive 19 of 145 (13.10%) and triple negative 29 of 173(16.76%). Luminal A tumors had the lowest rate of recurrence and had significantly lower recurrence rate in comparison with nonluminal HER2 postive (p=0.0017) and triple negative subtypes (p<0.0001). Compared with all other subtypes except nonluminal HER2 positive, triple negative tumors had the highest rate of tumor recurrence (p<0.01). Triple negatives were most likely to develop contralateral recurrence against all subtypes (p<0.05). Detection rate of locoregional and contralateral tumor recurrence were 28.3% on mammography (n=17/60). Conclusions: Luminal A tumors are associated with a low risk of recurrence while triple negative lesions have a high risk. In case of triple negative tumors, the contralateral breast has much more recurrence as compared with all other subtype. In terms of detection rates, breast USG was the best modality for detecting tumor recurrence, compared with other modalities (p<0.05). Subtyping of breast tumors using a molecular gene expression panel can identify patients who have increased risk of recurrence and allow prediction of locations of tumor recurrence for each subtype.

  • The purpose of this study is the identification of (N-2-hydroxy-3-butenyl) valine(HBVal adduct) and (N-2,3,4-trihydroxy-butyl)valine(THBVal adduct)with mice inhalation exposure with 1,3-butadiene for 3 weeks($6\;hr/day\;{\times}\;5\;days/week$). Body weights were significantly lower from 4 or 9 exposure post-day in 1000 or 500ppm inhalation group than in control. The levels of HBVal adducts are 1.8, 3.7 and 6.2 pmol/mg globin in $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ , and $3^{rd}$ week for 500 ppm 1,3-butadiene(BD), and 5.7, 7.4 and 16.0 pmol/mg globin in $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ , and $3^{rd}$ week for 1000 ppm BD inhalation exposure. The levels of THBVal adducts are 32.0, 42.0 and 55.0 pmol/mg globin in $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ , and $3^{rd}$ week for 500 ppm BD, and 67.8, 72.7 and 83.5 pmol/mg globin in $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ , and $3^{rd}$ week for 1000 ppm BD inhalation exposure. Their ratios of THBVal and HBVal adducts are higher at earlier exposure and lower concentration. They are17.8, 11.4 and 8.87 in $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ , and $3^{rd}$ week for 500 ppm BD, and 11.9, 9.8 and 5.2 in $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ , and $3^{rd}$ week for 1000 ppm BD inhalation exposure. In conclusion, THBVal and HBVal adducts are a important hemoglobin adduct for monitoring of BD exposure, and the latter is more biomarker than the other.

  • Pregnant Yorkshire gilts were utilized to investigate the efficacy of exogenous administration of pST and/or insulin in enhancing prenatal piglet survival, uteroplacental and umbilical cord growth and development. Gilts were randomly assigned in a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement to four treatment combinations consisting of either daily i.m. injections of 5 mg pST (P, n=23); 0.50 IU/kg of insulin (I, n=23); combination of pST and insulin (P+I, n=23); or 1 ml of saline as control (C, n=23) from gestation Day 30 to 70. All gilts were sacrificed on gestation d 113 to evaluate piglet survival and uteroplacental or umbilical cord development Uteri were longer (346.3 vs 325.7 cm; p<0.05), and heavier (3122.8 vs 2940.7 g; p<0.05) in insulin treated gilts. Only placental macroscopic surface area was enhanced by maternal insulin injections (p<0.05) Incidence of umbilical cord abnormalities were low (14.3%), and they were independent of maternal treatment, occurring more in short cords than in long ones (21 vs 12%; p<0.05). A 6% increase in cord length (53.2 vs 48.6 cm; p=<0.05) was observed in piglets from treated gilts compared with controls. Significant sex differences (in favour of males) were observed in piglet weight, crown rump length and for most umbilical or placental parameters. Gilt weight gains from breeding to Day 113 of gestation were 10% and 15% greater in pST and insulin treated gilts compared with controls. These data indicate that prepartum injections of pST and/or insulin to gestating gilts seem to have a beneficial effect on uteroplacental or umbilical cord development and promote conditions conducive for perinatal piglet survival.

  • Purpose: The significance of hospital volume remains inconsistent and controversial. In particular, few studies have examined whether hospital volume is associated with the outcome of gastrectomy for gastric cancer in East Asia. This study examined the effect of hospital volume on the short-term surgical and long-term oncological outcomes of patients undergoing curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Between 2009 and 2011, 1,561 patients underwent curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital (n=1,322) and Bucheon St. Mary's Hospital (n=239). We defined Seoul St. Mary's Hospital as a high-volume center and Bucheon St. Mary's Hospital as a low-volume center. Results: The extent of resection, rate of combined resection, tumor stage, operating time, and hospital stay did not differ significantly between the 2 hospitals. In addition, the hospital volume was not significantly associated with the 30-day morbidity and mortality. When the overall and disease-free survival rates of the patients were stratified according to stage, hospital volume was not significantly associated with prognosis at any stage. Conclusions: Hospital volume might not be a decisive factor with respect to the surgical and oncological outcomes of patients if well-trained surgeons perform gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

  • Purpose : The present study tested the hypothesis that acupressure at Zusanli(ST36) would attenuate immobilization-induced skeletal muscle atrophy. Methods : The left hind limb was immobilized using casting tape (ST36 group, n=10), and the animals were then treated daily with a pressure needle at ST36. Ten untreated animals with hind limb immobilization and no treatment served as a control group (n=10). After 2 weeks of immobilization, The body weight changes of rats were evaluated and the morphologies of the right and left gastrocnemius muscles in both the ST36 and control groups were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) of gastrocnemius muscles were observed. Results : The acupressure at the accupoint of Zusanli conferred significant protection against reductions in left gastrocnemius muscle weights and average cross-sectional muscle areas in the ST36 group as compared with those in the control group. Moreover, the acupressure at the ST36 point significantly reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) activity in the gastrocnemius muscles as compared with that in the control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that acupressure at the accupoint of Zusanli provides protection against immobilization-induced muscle atrophy by decreasing MDA activity in gastrocnemius muscles.

  • To determine the structure of chromosome and to identify the sex chromosome of Ginkgo biloba and G. biloba var. fastigiata, the samples were obtained from root tips of trees growing in seven different provinences. The results are as follows. The basic number of somatic chromosomes was 2n=24. The range of a relative length of long chromosome was between $14.88{\sim}11.18{\mu}m$ and that of short chromosome was $8.11{\sim}6.24{\mu}m$. The chromosome sets were composed with one long pairs of m type and 11 short pairs of sm or st type. These short pairs showed the continuous descending in length. There was a satellite on the short arm of the Longest chromosome pair, and were satellites of the one or both long arm of 7th or 8th chromosome pair which were sm or st type, or the shortest st type chromosome pair. Sometimes, a satellite on the short arm of the longest chromosome pairs of Ginkgo biloba was double satellite, but that of G. biloba var. fastigiata was not. Karyotype was $2n=24=2^{2s}A^m+2B^{st\;or\;sm}+2C^{st}+2D^{st}+2E^{st}+2F^{st\;or\;sm}+2G^{sm}+2^{2s}H^{sm}\;or\;(^{1s}H^{sm}+H^{sm})+2I^{st}+2J^{st}+2K^{st}+2^{2s}L^{st}\;or\;(^{1s}L^{st}+L^{st})$. The male and female trees were not apparently distinguished by the chromsome structures. However the differences between the satellites could be used to identify the male and females. The male tree has double satellite on short arm of a longest chromosome pairs and females' has not. Also female trees have a satellite on a short chromosome more frequently than male trees.
