Turbulent flow structure in the high amplitude meandering channel is complex due to secondary recirculation with helicoidal motions and shear layers formed by flow separation from the curved sidewall. In this work, the secondary flow and the superelevation of the water surface produced in the high-amplitude Kinoshita channel are reproduced by the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations using the VOF technique for resolving the variation of water surface elevation and three statistical turbulence models ($k-{\varepsilon}$, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, $k-{\omega}$ SST). The numerical results computed by a second-order accurate finite volume method are compared with an existing experimental measurement. Among applied turbulence models, $k-{\omega}$ SST model relatively well predicts overall distribution of the secondary recirculation in the Kinoshita channel, while all three models yield similar prediction of water superelevation transverse slope. The secondary recirculation driven by the radial acceleration in the upstream bend affects the flow structure in the downstream bend, which yields a pair of counter-rotating vortices at the bend apex. This complex flow pattern is reasonably well reproduced by the $k-{\omega}$ SST model. Both $k-{\varepsilon}$ based models fail to predict the clockwise-rotating vortex between a pair of counter-rotating vortices which was observed in the experiment. Regardless of applied turbulence models, the present computations using the VOF method appear to well reproduce the superelevation of water surface through the meandering channel.
Numerical simulations of free surface flow over a broad-crested rectangular weir are conducted by using the volume of fraction (VOF) method and three different turbulence models, the k-${\varepsilon}$, RNG k-${\omega}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models. The governing equations are solved by a second-order accurate finite volume method and the grid sensitivity study of solutions is carried out. The numerical results are evaluated by comparing the solutions with experimental and numerical results of Kirkgoz et al. (2008) and some non-dimensionalized experimental results obtained by Moss (1972) and Zachoval et al. (2012). The results show that the present numerical model can reasonably reproduce the experimental results, while three turbulent models yield different numerical predictions of two distinct zones of flow separation, the first zone is in front of the upstream edge of the weir and the second is created immediately behind the upstream edge of the weir where the flow is separated to form the separation bubble. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model appears to significantly underestimate the size of both separation zones and the k-${\omega}$ SST model slightly over-estimates the first separation zone in front of the weir. The RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ model predicts both separation zones in overall good agreement with the experimental measurement, while the k-${\omega}$ SST model yields the best numerical prediction of separation bubble at the upstream edge of the weir.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of various turbulence models on the aerodynamic noise of an air-conditioner (AC) indoor unit. The results from URANS (unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations with the standard k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ shear stress transport (SST) and Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence models were analyzed and compared with the noise data from the experiments. The frequency spectra of the far-field acoustic pressure were computed using the Farrasat equation derived from the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation based on the acoustic analogy model. Two fixed fan casings and the rotating cross-flow fan were used as the source surfaces of the dipole noise in the Farrasat equation. The result with the standard k-$\epsilon$ model showed a much better agreement with the experimental data compared to the k-w SST and S-A models. The differences in the pressure spectra from the different turbulence models were discussed based on the instantaneous vorticity fields. It was found that the over-estimated power spectra with the k-w SST and S-A models are related to the emphasized small-scale vortices produced with these models.

TVC is a kind of ejector which entrains low pressure working fluid by using the high pressure working fluid. While most papers relating with ejectors treat the working fluid as an ideal gas for convenience, the fluid doesn't behave as the ideal gas when phase change occurs. In this study, numerical analysis is conducted by applying Redlich-Kwong equation of state instead of ideal gas equation of state. Two turbulent models are compared for the better prediction and SST k-${\omega}$ model is preferred rather than realizable k-${\epsilon}$ model by comparison. Energy loss at the diffuser inlet and throat using the real gas equation of state is relatively greater than that using ideal gas law. For the real gas case, pressure increase due to shock train at the diffuser outlet is relatively smaller than the ideal gas case, but both cases have the same pressure increase due to a pseudo shock.

A numerical simulation of the incompressible multiphase hydraulic jump flow was performed to compare the interface prediction through the use of the three RANS turbulence models: $k-{\varepsilon}$, $RNGk-{\varepsilon}$ and SST $k-{\omega}$. A three dimensional no submerged hydraulic jump and a two dimensional submerged hydraulic jump were modeled. Both the geometry and the mesh were created using the open source Gmsh code. The project's geometry consists of a rectangular channel with length and height differences between the two dimensional and three dimensional simulations. Uniform hexahedral cells were used for the mesh. Three refining meshes were constructed to allow to verify simulation convergence. The Volume of Fluid (abbr. VOF) method was used for treatment of the air-water surface. The turbulence models were evaluated in three distinct set up configurations to provide a greater accuracy in the flow representation. In the two-dimensional analysis of a submerged hydraulic jump simulation, the turbulence model RNG RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ provided a better interface adjust with the experimental results than the model $k-{\varepsilon}$ and SST $k-{\omega}$. In the three-dimensional simulation of a no-submerged hydraulic jump the k-# showed better results than the SST $k-{\omega}$ and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ capturing the height and length of the ledge with a better fit with the experimental results.

For the prediction on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown, computational studies on the Oblique Shock wave/Vortex Interaction (OSVI) are conducted and compared with both experimental results and analytic mode1. A Shock-stable numerical scheme, the Roe scheme with Mach number-based function (RoeM), and a two-equation eddy viscosity-transport approach arc used for three-dimensional turbulent flow computations. The computational configuration is identical to available experiment, and we attempt to ascertain the effect of parameters such as a vortex strength, streamwise velocity deficit, and shock strength at a freestream Mach number of 2.49. Numerical simulations using the k-w SST turbulence model and suitably modeled vortex profiles are able to accurately reproduce many fine features through a direct comparison with experimental observations. The present computational approach to determine the criterion on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown is found to be in good agreement with both the experimental result and the analytic prediction.
This study investigates the accuracy of short-term ocean predictions during the development of ocean stratification for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) as well as the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on the predictions through a series of sensitive numerical experiments. Model performance is evaluated using the marine meteorological buoys at seas around the Korean peninsular (KP), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) buoys over the tropical Pacific ocean, and ARGO floats data over the western North Pacific for boreal winter (February) and spring (May). Sensitive experiments are conducted using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model (i.e., GloSea5) and an uncoupled ocean model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, NEMO) and their results are compared. The verification results revealed an overall good performance for the SST predictions over the tropical Pacific ocean and near the Korean marginal seas, in which the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were $0.31{\sim}0.45^{\circ}C$ and $0.74{\sim}1.11^{\circ}C$ respectively, except oceanic front regions with large spatial and temporal SST variations (the maximum error reached up to $3^{\circ}C$). The sensitive numerical experiments showed that GloSea5 outperformed NEMO over the tropical Pacific in terms of bias and RMSE analysis, while NEMO outperformed GloSea5 near the KP regions. These results suggest that the atmosphere-ocean coupling substantially influences the short-term ocean forecast over the tropical Pacific, while other factors such as atmospheric forcing and the accuracy of simulated local current are more important than the coupling effect for the KP regions being far from tropics during the development of ocean stratification.

In this study, a numerical analysis methodology is studied to predict thermal and flow characteristics of C3X vane with internal cooling. Effects of turbulence models, transition models and viscous work term on temperature and pressure distributions on the vane surface are investigated. These optional terms have few effects on the pressure distributions over the vane surface. However, they have great influence on prediction of the temperature distributions on the vane surface. The combination of k-${\omega}$ based SST turbulence model, ${\gamma}$ transition model and viscous work term are better than RSM turbulence model on prediction of the surface temperature. The average temperature difference between CFD results and experimental results is calculated 2 % at the pressure side and 1 % at the suction side. Furthermore computing time of this combination is half of the RSM turbulence model. When k-${\omega}$ based SST turbulence model and ${\gamma}$ transition model with viscous work term are applied, more accurate predictions of thermal and internal flow characteristics of high pressure turbine are expected.
Turbulent flow analysis is conducted around the multi-stage launch vehicle including base region and detachment motion of strap-on boosters due to resultant aerodynamic forces and gravity is simulated. Aerodynamic solution procedure is coupled with rigid body dynamics for the prediction of separation behavior. An overset mesh technique is adopted to achieve maximum efficiency in simulating relative motion of bodies and various turbulence models are implemented on the flow solver to predict the aerodynamic forces accurately. At first, some preliminary studies are conducted to show the importance of base flow for the exact prediction of detachment motion and to find the most suitable turbulence model for the simulation of launch vehicle configurations. And then, developed solver is applied to the simulation of KSR-III, a three-stage sounding rocket researched in Korea. From the analyses, after-body flow field strongly affects the separation motions of strap-on boosters. Negative pitching moment at initial stage is gradually recovered and a strap-on finally results in a safe separation, while fore-body analysis shows collision phenomena between core rocket and booster. And a slight variation of motion is observed from the comparison between inviscid and turbulent analyses. Change of separation trajectory based on viscous effects is just a few percent and therefore, inviscid analysis is sufficient for the simulation of separation motion if the study is focused only on the movement of strap-ons.
