Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models are extensively employed in industrial settings for the purpose of simulating intricate fluid flows. However, these models are subject to certain limitations. Notably, disparities persist in the Reynolds stresses when comparing the RANS model with high-fidelity data obtained from Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) or experimental measurements. In this work we propose an approach to mitigate these discrepancies while retaining the favorable attributes of the Menter Shear Stress Transport (SST) model, such as its significantly lower computational expense compared to DNS simulations. This strategy entails incorporating an explicit algebraic model and employing a neural network to correct the turbulent characteristic time. The imposition of realizability constraints is investigated through the introduction of penalization terms. The assimilated Reynolds stress model demonstrates good predictive performance in both in-sample and out-of-sample flow configurations. This suggests that the model can effectively capture the turbulent characteristics of the flow and produce physically realistic predictions.
A computational study of evaluation of current turbulence models is performed for a better prediction of thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor. The turbulence models tested in the present study are the two-layer model, the shear stress transport (SST) model, the v2-f model and the elliptic blending mode(EBM). The performances of the turbulence models are evaluated by applying them to the thermal stratification experiment conducted at JNC (Japan Nuclear Corporation). The algebraic flux model is used for treating the turbulent heat flux for the two-layer model and the SST model, and there exist little differences between the two turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. The v2-f model and the elliptic blending model better predict the steep gradient of temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and the v2-f model and elliptic blending model predict properly the oscillation of the ensemble-averaged temperature. In general the overall performance of the elliptic blending model is better than the v2-f model in the prediction of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature oscillation.
Evaluation of the elliptic blending turbulence model (EBM) together with the two-layer model, shear stress transport (SST) model and elliptic relaxation model (V2-F) is performed for a better prediction of natural convection and thermal stratification. For a natural convection problem the models are applied to the prediction of a natural convection in a rectangular cavity and the computed results are compared with the experimental data. It is shown that the elliptic blending model predicts as good as or better than the existing second moment differential stress and flux model for the mean velocity and turbulent quantities. For thermal stratification problem the models are applied to the thermal stratification in the upper plenum of liquid metal reactor. In this analysis there exist much differences between the turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. The V2-F model and EBM better predict the steep gradient of temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and the V2-F model and EBM predict properly the oscillation of temperature. The two-layer model and SST model fail to predict the temporal oscillation of temperature.
A numerical study is carried out to analyze the steady three-dimensional turbulent flow and convective heat transfer in a staggered pin-fin array with diamond shaped elements at various geometrical configurations. Steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation are solved using a finite volume based solver. Shear stress transport (SST) model is used as turbulence closure. The computational domain is composed of one pitch of pin-fin displacement with periodic boundary conditions on the surfaces normal to the streamwise direction and the cross-streamwise direction. The numerical results for Nusselt number and friction factor are validated with experimental results. The effects of pin angle, pin height and pitch on Nusselt number, friction factor and efficiency index are investigated.
This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.
Detached Eddy Simulation(DES) is performed for turbulent flow of the $270^{\circ}$ bend at a Reynolds number of 56,690. A Fine grid generation is used near a wall in order to satisfy the wall boundary condition of y+<1. Turbulence models adopted for DES and Reynolds Average Navier Stokes(RANS) simulation are SST(Shear Stress Transfort) model. Solutions for both streamwise and circumferential velocity components are compared with the experimental data by Lee for $270^{\circ}$ bend and by Chang for $180^{\circ}$ bend.
The objective of this study is to predict the drag of an axisymmetric underwater vehicle with bluff afterbody using CFD. FLUENT, commercial CFD code, is used to simulate high Reynolds number turbulent flows around the vehicle. The computed drag coefficients are compared to available experimental data at various Reynolds numbers. Four widely used two-equation turbulence models are investigated to evaluate their performance of predicting the anisotropic turbulence in a recirculating flow region, which is caused by flow separation arising from the base of the vehicle. The simulations with Realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models predict the anisotropic turbulent flows comparatively well and the drag prediction results with those models show good agreements with the experimental data.

Numerical simulations of 3D aircraft configurations are performed in order to understand the effects of turbulence models on the prediction of aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics. An in-house CFD code that solves 3D RANS equations and two-equation turbulence model equations are used. The code applies Roe's approximated Riemann solver and an AF-ADI scheme. Van Leer's MUSCL extrapolation with van Albada's limiter is also adopted. Various versions of Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models as well as Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model are incorporated into the CFD code. Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST models include the standard model, the 2003 model, the model incorporating the vorticity source term, and the model containing controlled decay. Turbulent flows over a wing are simulated in order to validate the turbulence models contained in the CFD code. The results from these simulations are then compared with computational results from the $3^{rd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Numerical simulations of the DLR-F6 wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon configurations are conducted and compared with computational results of the $2^{nd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Aerodynamic characteristics as well as flow features are scrutinized with respect to the turbulence models. The results obtained from each simulation incorporating Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model variations are compared with one another.

The main concern of this study is to integrate the EARSM into an industrial RANS solver in conjunction with the $k-{\omega}$ model, as proposed by Hellsten (EARSMKO2005). In order to improve the robustness, particular limiters are introduced to turbulent conservative variables, and a suitable full-approximation storage (FAS) multi-grid (MG) strategy is designed to incorporate turbulence model equations. The present limiters and MG strategy improve both robustness and efficiency significantly but without degenerating accuracy. Two discretization approachs for velocity gradient on cell interfaces are implemented and compared with each other. Numerical results of a three-dimensional supersonic square duct flow show that the proper discretization of velocity gradient improves the accuracy essentially. To assess the capability of the resulting EARSM $k-{\omega}$ model to predict complex engineering flow, the case of Common Research Model (CRM, Wing-Body) is performed. All the numerical results demonstrate that the resulting model performs well and is comparable to the standard two-equation models such as SST $k-{\omega}$ model in terms of computational effort, thus it is suitable for industrial applications.
The wall friction correlations of oscillatory natural circulation loops are highly loop-specific, making it difficult to perform 1-D system simulations before obtaining specific experimental data. To better predict the friction characteristics, the nonlinear dynamics of a toroidal single-phase natural circulation loop were numerically investigated, and the transition effect was considered. The k-kL-ω transitional turbulence and k-ω SST turbulence models were used to compute the flow characteristics of the loop under different heating powers varying from 0.48 to 1.0 W/cm2, and the results of both models were compared with previous experiments. The mass flow rates and friction factors predicted by the k-kL-ω model showed a better agreement with the experimental data than the results of the k-ω SST model. The oscillation frequencies calculated using both models agreed well with the experimental data. The k-kL-ω transitional turbulence model provided better friction-factor predictions in oscillatory natural circulation loops because it can reproduce the temporal and spatial variation of the wall shear stress more accurately by capturing the movement of laminar, transition turbulent zones inside unstable natural circulation loops. This study shows that transition effects are a possible explanation for the highly loop-specific friction correlations observed in various oscillatory natural circulation loops.
