Application of Moment Tensor Inversion to Small Local Earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula (한반도의 소규모지진 모멘트 텐서 역산의 응용)

  • The purpose of application of moment tensor inversion method is to determine source parameters, such as, focal mechanism, seismic moment and source depth. This paper presents results of focal mechanism solutions of 14 recent events with magnitudes ranging from M3.3 to M4.8 by using moment tensor inversion method called TDMT_INV. The strike of faults is in the direction of NE-SW and NW-SE with the movement of strike-slip or strike-slip of minor reverse component. The compressional axis of the stress field is predominantly E-W or ENE-WSW except for some faults, which are distributed at Ryongnam Massif and Wonsan, they have a compressional axis of N-S or NNW-SSE.

An Automated Water Nitrate Monitoring System based on Ion-Selective Electrodes

  • Purpose: In-situ water quality monitoring based on ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is a promising technique because ISEs can be used directly in the medium to be tested, have a compact size, and are inexpensive. However, signal drift can be a major concern with on-line management systems because continuous immersion of the ISEs in water causes electrode degradation, affecting the stability, repeatability, and selectivity over time. In this study, a computer-based nitrate monitoring system including automatic electrode rinsing and calibration was developed to measure the nitrate concentration in water samples in real-time. Methods: The capabilities of two different types of poly(vinyl chloride) membrane-based ISEs, an electrode with a liquid filling and a carbon paste-based solid state electrode, were used in the monitoring system and evaluated on their sensitivities, selectivities, and durabilities. A feasibility test for the continuous detection of nitrate ions in water using the developed system was conducted using water samples obtained from various water sources. Results: Both prepared ISEs were capable of detecting low concentrations of nitrate in solution, i.e., 0.7 mg/L $NO_3-N$. Furthermore, the electrodes have the same order of selectivity for nitrate: $NO_3{^-}{\gg}HCO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$, and maintain their sensitivity by > 40 mV/decade over a period of 90 days. Conclusions: The use of an automated ISE-based nitrate measurement system that includes automatic electrode rinsing and two-point normalization proved to be feasible in measuring $NO_3-N$ in water samples obtained from different water sources. A one-to-one relationship between the levels of $NO_3-N$ measured with the ISEs and standard analytical instruments was obtained.

  • Comparison calibration equipment for infrared-radiation thermometers below $0^{\circ}C$ has been established, using a TRT2 (transfer radiation thermometer 2, HEITRONICS) as a transfer standard and an ME30 (Model: ME30, HEITRONICS) as a variabletemperature blackbody. The TRT2 was calibrated using three fixed points (Ice ($0.01^{\circ}C$), In ($156.5985^{\circ}C$), and Sn ($231.928^{\circ}C$)) and the Planckian Sakuma-Hattori equation, and including the interpolation and extrapolation errors at $-50^{\circ}C$ in the uncertainty. The pneumatic lid is installed upon opening of the ME30 and is opened for only 30 seconds for measuring the radiation temperature, which prevents formation of ice in the ME30 and also reduces the calibration time to half. The farther away from the $0{\sim}232^{\circ}C$ region, the larger the uncertainty of the comparison calibration equipment becomes. The expanded uncertainty of the comparison calibration equipment was estimated as 0.26 K at $-20^{\circ}C$.

  • Bayesian inference and model selection method for software reliability growth models are studied. Software reliability growth models are used in testing stages of software development to model the error content and time intervals between software failures. In this paper, could avoid multiple integration using Gibbs sampling, which is a kind of Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to compute the posterior distribution. Bayesian inference for general order statistics models in software reliability with diffuse prior information and model selection method are studied. For model determination and selection, explored goodness of fit (the error sum of squares), trend tests. The methodology developed in this paper is exemplified with a software reliability random data set introduced by of Weibull distribution(shape 2 & scale 5) of Minitab (version 14) statistical package.

  • Ten empirical disinfection models for the plasma process were used to find an optimum model. The variation of model parameters in each model according to the operating conditions (first voltage, second voltage, air flow rate, pH, incubation water concentration) were investigated in order to explain the disinfection model. In this experiment, the DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) plasma reactor was used to inactivate Phytophthora capsici which cause wilt in tomato plantation. Optimum disinfection models were chosen among ten models by the application of statistical SSE (sum of squared error), RMSE (root mean sum of squared error), $r^2$ values on the experimental data using the GInaFiT software in Microsoft Excel. The optimum models were shown as Log-linear+Tail model, Double Weibull model and Biphasic model. Three models were applied to the experimental data according to the variation of the operating conditions. In Log-linear+Tail model, $Log_{10}(N_o)$, $Log_{10}(N_{res})$ and $k_{max}$ values were examined. In Double Weibull model, $Log_{10}(N_o)$, $Log_{10}(N_{res})$, ${\alpha}$, ${\delta}_1$, ${\delta}_2$, p values were calculated and examined. In Biphasic model, $Log_{10}(N_o)$, f, $k_{max1}$ and $k_{max2}$ values were used. The appropriate model parameters for the calculation of optimum operating conditions were $k_{max}$, ${\alpha}$, $k_{max1}$ at each model, respectively.

Bathymetry and Marine Geophysical Observations of the Ayu Trough, Southern Philippine Sea: Implications for Crustal Extension and Structure (남부 필리핀해 Ayu Trough에서의 지형과 선상지구물리 관측: 지각 확장과 구조 고찰)

  • The Ayu Trough, located in the southern end of the Philippine Sea, represents a divergent boundary between the Philippine Sea and the Caroline Plates. A detailed geophysical survey was carried out in the Ayu Trough by R/V Onnuri. Topographically, the Ayu Trough resembles an slow spreading ridge. The trough can be divided into three sections: the south $(0^{\circ}-1^{\circ}30'N),\;middle\;(1^{\circ}30'-4^{\circ}N)$, and north $(4^{\circ}-6^{\circ}30'N)$. The seafloor in the middle section is characterized by features asymmetric with respect to the axis. These features were probably produced by NW-SE and NNW-SSE extensions and seem to support the argument that the opening of the Ayu Trough occurred in an oblique fashion. Farther south, a long transform fault but with a short offset defines the boundary between middle and southern sections. The axial depth increases a stepwise to the south of $1^{\circ}30'N$. A clear difference can be seen between the southern and middle sections with the latter exhibiting much higher mantle Bouguer anomaly values in the axial region. The anomaly indicates that the axial crust perhaps experienced a much higher degree of extension in the middle than in the southern section. The analyses of magnetic field data reveal that the region beyond 100km exhibits considerable variations, whereas the magnetic anomalies within 100km from the trough axis are very much subdued. This observation suggests that the opening of the Ayu Trough involved an initial stage of rifting of existing volcanic arcs, followed by production of new seafloor.

Injection Treatment for Frozen Shoulder ; Trigger Point Injection and Neruologic Blockade (동결견에 대한 주사요법; 통증유발부위 주사 및 신경 차단술)

  • Frozen shoulder is known as a self-limited disease. But, its long duration and pain nature can make the patients debilitative. And most patients cannot tolerate a chronically painful extremity and are concerned about the possibility of developing permanent dysfunction. In painful phase of frozen shoulder, some aggressive mordalties as like trigger point injection or suprascapular nerve block can beneficial to: reduce discomfort and pain. In order to document clinical results, we evaluated the results of 134 frozen shoulders treated with trigger point injection and/or suprascapular nerve block at Kyungpook National University Hospital, from January 1995 to April 1997. The treatment group was divided into 3 modalities: 17 cases in trigger point injection(TPI), 39 cases in suprascapular nerve block(SSB), and 78 cases in both methods. The supportive treatment including oral medication, heat and stretching exercise was also applied. The average age at the time of diagnosis was 57 years old and average follow-up time was 18 months. The results were as follows: Average time of significant improvement in pain was 9 days. Eighty-eight percent (119 cases) was improved in pain and range of motion after injecllion treatments; 82%(14/17) with TPI, 85%(33/39) with SSB, and 92%(72/78) with both. Early improvement of paih within 1 week was 72% in the treatment-responsive group, in which TPI group has 100% response(14/14) and sse has 94% response(31/33)

  • The WGR model was developed to represent meso-scale precipitation. As a conceptual model, this model shows a good link between atmospheric dynamics and statistical description of meso-scale precipitation(Waymire et al., 1984). However, as it has maximum 18 parameters along with its non-linear structure, its parameter estimation has been remained a difficult problem. There have been several cases of its parameter estimation for different fields using non-linear programming techniques(NLP), which were also difficult tasks to hamper its wide applications. In this study, we estimated the WGR model parameters of the Han river basin using the genetic algorithm(GA) and compared them to the NLP results(Yoo and Kwon, 2000). As a result of the study, we can find that the sum of square error from the GA provide more consistent parameters to the seasonal variation of rainfall. Also, we can find that the higher rainfall amount during summer season is closely related with the arrival rate of rain bands, not the rain cell intensity.

Shallow Geological Structure of the Yongil Bay, Southeast Coast of Korea (한국 남동부 영일만의 천부 지질구조)

  • The geologic structure of the Yongil Bay was studied in detail based on high resolution seismic profiles. The seafloor trends NE to SW with a deeper part off the Kuryong Peninsula. The seafloor is rather smooth due to the Quaternary fluvial deposits in the lower part and muddy sediments in the upper part. The seafloor off Umockri is very irregular due to erosion where Tertiary sedimentary rocks crop out. The underlying basement rocks were strongly deformed with faults and folds. High-angled reverse faults mostly trend N-S and NNW-SSE and are indicative of westward thrusting. Normal faults in NW-SE and WNW-ESE directions occur locally. Large folding structures trend NE-SW nearshore area of Umockri. The geologic structure suggests that the bay was subject to compressional stress regimes trending E-W and/or NW-SE prior to the early Late Miocene.
