The UTM-01 developed in 1998 was the first maglev vehicle in Korea for the urban transit maglev (UTM) system. Through the improvement of UTM-01 and development of UTM02, the commercialization of the UTM system is being prepared now. In order to prepare for the commercialization of maglev, it is necessary that an optimal design of the levitation magnet should be provided for the safe operation of the vehicle. The levitation force is formed through the function of magnetic flux density on the top of magnet poles and gap between magnet pole and guide rail. To generate a magnetic field that is high enough to levitate the vehicle, ferromagnetic materials, such as pure iron for magnet pole and SS400 for guide rail, were used. The heat generated by $I^2R$ loss of magnet conductor makes the thermal convection on the surface of magnet including coil and poles. As these two characteristics are nonlinear phenomena, this paper deals with the nonlinear analysis on the magnetic and thermal properties of the U-type levitation magnet by using 3-D finite element method (FEM). Base on the analysis results, a small scale U-type magnet was designed, manufactured, and tested and it was verified that the magnet manufactured was satisfactory to all the design specifications.
Most of the welding steel plate structures have complicated mechanical problems such as rolling directional characteristics and residual stresses caused by manufacturing process. For the enhancement of reliability and safety in those structures, therefore, a systematic investigation is required. SS400 steel plate used for common structures was selected and welded by FCAW butt-welding process for this study, and then it was studied experimently about characteristics of fatigue crack propagations with respect to rolling direction and welding residual stress of welded steel plates. When the angles between rolling direction and tensile loading direction in base material are increased, their ultimate strength not show a significant difference, but yielding strength are increased and elongations are decreased uniformly. It is also shown that fatigue crack growth rate can be increased from those results. When the angles between welding bead direction and loading direction in welded material are increase, fatigue crack growth rate of them are decreased and influenced uniformly according to the conditions of residual stress distribution. In these results, it is shown that the welded steel plate structures are needed to harmonize distributed welding residual stress, rolling direction and loading direction fur the improvement of safety and endurance in manufacture of their structures.

Silk Sericin(SS) is a natural protein extracted from cocoon of bombix mori and shows moisturizing effect to the skin due to a number of hydroxyl groups in the structure. But its application to cosmetics is limited due to its poor solubility in water. In order to solve this drawback and expand its application to cosmetics, polyethyleneglycol(PEG) was conjugated with sericin by reacting activated polyethyleneglycol(ActPEG). Reaction site of sericin is tyrosine residue, which was determined by using $^1$H-NMR. Random coil structure of sericin was transformed to beta-sheet structure by conjugating polyethyleneglycol. It was confirmed that melting point of sericin-PEG conjugate was lowered compared to that of each sericin and PEG due to the interaction between sericin and PEG in crystalline structure. Self-assembled sericin-PEG nanoparticle was obtained by dialyzing with alcohol solution of sericin-PEG conjugate against water. The particle is spherical and has 200-400nm of size. The moisturizing ability of sericin-PEG nanoparticle was much higher than that of sericin itself. Incorporation of vitamin A into sericin-PEG nanoparticle was carried out by diafiltration method. The content of incorporated Vitamin A in sericin-PEG nanoparticle was 8.9 wt%. Releasing behaviour of vitamin A incorporated into nanoparticle was tested in phosphate buffer, pH 7.4 at 37$^{\circ}C$. and half-life of Vitamin A release was 43hrs. Sericin-PEG nanoparticle exhibited higher moisturing effect than sericin itself and distilled water, respectively. No toxicity and irritation were observed in animal tests. It can be expected that the self-assembled sericin-PEG nanoparticle can be developed for cosmetics.

In this paper, in order to secure the safety and productivity of pine cone harvest, modeling and structural analysis of the hammering system for pine cone harvest drone that can easily access pine cone of Pinus koraiensis and collide with them to harvest them was performed. It calculate the equivalent stress for the structure of the hammering system and the yield strength of the applied material by applying the shear force of the stalk at which the pine cone is separated from the branch, and it is to verify the safety of the structure and propose an optimal design through appropriate factor of safety and design change. The shear force of the stalk at which the pine cone was separated from the branch was 468 N, and was applied to both ends of the hammering system. The yield strength of SS400 steel used in the hammering system is 245 ㎫, and the design change and structural analysis were performed so that the Von Mises stress could be less than 122.5 ㎫ by applying the factor of safety of 2.0 or more. As a result of the structural analysis of the frist modeling, the Von Mises stress was 220.3 ㎫, the factor of safety was 1.12, and the stress was concentrated in the screw fastening holes. As a result of the design change of the screw fastening holes, the Von Mises stress was 169.4 ㎫, the factor of safety was 1.45, and the stress was concentrated on the side part. As a result of the design change by changing screw fastening holes and adding ribs, the Von Mises stress was 121.6 ㎫, and the factor of safety was 2.02. The safety of the hammering system was secured with an optimal design with little change in mass. There was no deformation or damage as a result of experimenting on pine cone harvest by manufacturing the hammering system with an optimal design.

Hydrogen infiltration into metals has been reported to induce alterations in their mechanical properties under load. In this study, we conducted CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement) tests on steel specimens designed for use in liquid hydrogen storage systems. Electrochemical hydrogen charging was performed using both FCC series austenitic stainless steel and BCC series structural steel specimens, while CTOD testing was carried out using a 500kN-class material testing machine. Results indicate a notable divergence in behavior: SS400 test samples exhibited a higher susceptibility to failure compared to austenitic stainless steel counterparts, whereas SUS 316L test samples displayed minimal changes in displacement and maximum load due to hydrogen charging. However, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis results presented challenges in clearly explaining the mechanical degradation phenomenon in the tested materials. This study's resultant database holds significant promise for enhancing the safety design of liquid hydrogen storage systems, providing invaluable insights into the performance of various steel alloys under the influence of hydrogen embrittlement.

Special equipment used for snow removal is only used in the winter and must be moved into storage during non-winter seasons. However, when moving heavy equipment using a forklift within a limited space, safety accidents may occur due to deformation and damage due to the worker's limited visibility and excessive loading of heavy objects. In this study, the scissors boom of the developed heavy load transporter was conducted in two cases: link structural analysis and position-based structural analysis. In detail, the link structural analysis covers four cases of stress and safety factor according to material and thickness to optimize the specifications of the material selected during development, and the structural analysis according to position covers two cases before and after the lift, when maximum stress concentration is achieved. Safety was evaluated through finite element analysis. As a result of the study, when manufacturing a scissors boom type heavy load transporter that can withstand a load of 10 tons, the link showed safety at SS400 4.5mm or higher, and reinforcement is needed in the upper and lower structures, so it is judged to be useful in applying materials according to the load.
The dissolved air at the bottom layer of the deep aeration tank transforms into fine gas bubbles within the MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solid) floc when exposed to the atmosphere. MLSS floc flotation occurs when MLSS from the deep aeration tank enters the secondary clarifier for solid-liquid separation, as dissolved air becomes fine air within the MLSS floc. The floated MLSS floc causes a high SS (Suspended Solid) concentration in the secondary effluent. The fine air bubbles within the MLSS floc must be removed to achieve stable sedimentation in the secondary clarifier. Fine bubbles within the MLSS floc can be removed by air sparging. The settleability of MLSS was measured by sludge volume indexes (SVIs) after air sparging MLSS taken at the end of the deep aeration tank. MLSS settling tests were performed at MLSS heights of 200, 300, 400, and 500 mm, and compressed air was fed at the bottom of the settling column with air flow rates of 100, 300, and 500 ml/min at each MLSS height, respectively. Also, at each height and air flow rate, air was sparged for 3, 5, and 7 minutes, respectively. SVI was determined for each height, air flow rate, and sparging time, respectively. Experimental results showed that a 300 mm MLSS height, 300 ml/min air flow rate, and 3 minutes of sparging time were the least conditions to achieve less than 120 ml/g of SVI, which was the criterion for good MLSS settling in the secondary clarifier.
Distributions of water temperature and DO profiles were investigated in Andong Reservoir from 1992 to 2004. Thermal stratification began to form from May of every year. Increasing water temperature of epilimnion, temperature difference between epilimnion and hypolimnion increased until August. Lower oxygen layer was formed at metalimnion from June or July of every year and there were 2 layers depending on each year. The two lower oxygen layers were affected by rainfall and inflow between July and September when thermal stratification was formed. The metalimnetic oxygen minima strongly formed at 2 layers, upper and lower part, when the average rainfall and inflow were ${\geqq}$ 170 mm, ${\geqq}$ 50 $m^3\;sec^{-1}$, respectively. It formed weakly when they were > 400 mm and > 200 $m^3\;sec^{-1}$ for one month. The upper part of low oxygen layers formed on the interface of epilimnion and metalimnion showed larger decreasing rate of DO than temperature and it disappeared around November. The lower part of those farmed on interface of metalimnion and hypolimnion existed until December and disappeared in January, this layer showed larger decreasing rate of temperature than DO. DO increased between the upper and lower part of the low oxygen layers. DO on hypolimnion increased under metalimnion and dramatically decreased near the bottom of the reservoir. Temperature of the inflow during rainy season was similar to that of the reservoir's metalimnion, DO was similar or higher and BOD, COD and SS increased. Density layer caused by turbidity was formed in metalimnion, and turbidity increased under the upper part (oxygen increasing layer) of metalimnetic DO minima layers reaching the maximum at the direct upper part of the lower DO minima layer. The upper part of DO minima layers formed on the interface of epilimnion and metalimnion is related to organic activity on the surface, and the lower part of those was considered to be the result of turbid water inflow to metalimnion during rainy season.
A high heat flux test facility using a graphite heating panel was constructed and is presently in operation at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, which is called KoHLT-1. Its major purpose is to carry out a thermal cycle test to verify the integrity of a HIP (hot isostatic pressing) bonded Be mockups which were fabricated for developing HIP joining technology to bond different metals, i.e., Be-to-CuCrZr and CuCrZr-to-SS316L, for the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) first wall. The KoHLT-1 consists of a graphite heating panel, a box-type test chamber with water-cooling jackets, an electrical DC power supply, a water-cooling system, an evacuation system, an He gas system, and some diagnostics, which are equipped in an authorized laboratory with a special ventilation system for the Be treatment. The graphite heater is placed between two mockups, and the gap distance between the heater and the mockup is adjusted to $2{\sim}3\;mm$. We designed and fabricated several graphite heating panels to have various heating areas depending on the tested mockups, and to have the electrical resistances of $0.2{\sim}0.5$ ohms during high temperature operation. The heater is connected to an electrical DC power supply of 100 V/400 A. The heat flux is easily controlled by the pre-programmed control system which consists of a personal computer and a multi function module. The heat fluxes on the two mockups are deduced from the flow rate and the coolant inlet/out temperatures by a calorimetric method. We have carried out the thermal cycle tests of various Be mockups, and the reliability of the KoHLT-1 for long time operation at a high heat flux was verified, and its broad applicability is promising.
We analyzed the ocean environmental data from water sample and automatic measurement instruments with the Incheon-Jeju passenger ship for 18 times during 4 years from 2001 to 2004. The objectives of this study are to monitor the spatial and temporal variations of ocean environmental parameters in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea using water sample analysis, and to compare and analyze the reliability of automatic measurement sensors for chlorophyll and turbidity using in situ measurements. The chlorophyll concentration showed the ranges between 0.1 to $6.0mg/m^3$. High concentrations occurred in the Gyeonggi Bay through all the cruises. The maximum value of chlorophyll concentration was $16.5mg/m^3$ in this area during September 2004. The absorption coefficients of dissolve organic matter at 400 nm showed below $0.5m^{-1}$ except those in August 2001 During 2002-2003, it did not distinctly change the seasonal variations with the ranges 0.1 to $0.4m^{-1}$. In the case of suspended sediment (SS) concentration, most of the area showed below $20g/m^3$ through all seasons except the Gyeonggi Bay and around Mokpo area. In general SS concentration of autumn and winter season was higher than that of summer. The central area of the Yellow Sea appeared to have lower value $10g/m^3$. The YSI fluorometer for chlorophyll concentration had a very low reliability and turbidity sensor had a $R^2$ value of 0.77 through the 4 times measurements comparing with water sampling method. For the automatic measurement using instruments for chlorphlyll and suspended sediment concentration, McVan and Choses sensor was greater than YSI multisensor. The SeaWiFS SS distribution map was well spatially matched with in situ measurement, however, there was a little difference in quantitative concentration.
