Investigation of Corrosion Characteristics with Zn, PTFE Hybrid Coating for SS400 in Sea Water (Zn, PTFE 복합 코팅에 의한 SS400 강의 해수 부식 특성 변화 연구)

  • The severe corrosion environment makes the steel product lifecycle short while Cu-alloys with anti-corrosion characteristic used in sea water are too expensive. This study shows that the Cu-alloy(Cu-37.25% Zn-0.67%Al) used in sea water environment can be superseded by SS400 with various coating process, evaluating electrochemical characteristics. Three coating processes were applied to SS400 such as PTFE + Zn coaing, Zn + PTFE coating and only Zn electrogalvanizing coaing. Various electrochemical experiments such as open circuit potential measurments, potentiodynamic polarization tests and analyses of Tafel constants. Mechanical properties were also measured by tensile test and hardness tests. As a result, Zn + PTFE coating for SS400 steel presented the excellent anti-corrosion characteristic in sea water.

  • For structural design and diagnosis, quantitative relationship between corrosive degradation and variation of mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue strength is needed. But it is difficult to find experimental data associated with corrosive degradation of structural structures in the literature. In this study, first of all I established the atmospheric corrosion test procedure. And using specimens of SM490A and SS400 on the atmospheric corrosion test bed, I carried out tensile and fatigue tests at regular intervals. And we studied the effect of post-weld heat treatment on the tensile and fatigue behaviour. It is found fatigue strength decreases as the atmospheric corrosion period increases.

  • It is well known that fatigue failure occur on welded structures in industrial application due to the repetitive load force. In order to decrease the fatigue failure, we analysed the mechanical properties based on their structural aspect, roll steel (SS 400) welded onto stainless steels (STS 304) by $CO_2$ gas as well as structure roll steel welded onto itself. We compared the hardness, tensile and fatigue properties with two kinds of samples which had no defects on the welding part observed by X-ray topographic analysis. It was recognized that the tensile and fatigue strength of SS 400 welded onto itself by $CO_2$ gas was higher than that of SS 400 welded onto STS 304.

  • Thermal and mechanical characteristics in dissimilar SS400-STS304 steel weldment have been investigated by 3D thermal elastic-plastic analysis. Moreover, the influence of welding residual stresses on the mechanical behaviour of this welded joint, by applying superimposed external load (tension load) was determined. The residual stresses obtained by numerical simulation were compared with the experimentally measured results. The FE results were in good agreement with the measured values. The mechanical test (hardness, tensile test) and metallurgical analysis was carried out to ensure the weld integrity. Hence, possibility of applying SS400-STS304 dissimilar steels in industries has been established.

  • The crevice corrosion of local corrosion occur when the gap exist on metal surface. This crevice corrosion happen to region such as flange of pipe, contact part of casing, under gasket and packing, between valve disk and seat of pump etc. Especially The crevice corrosion of mild steel(SS 400) get serious. This paper was studied on the crevice corrosion of SS 400 in fluid environment. In $0\%,\;2\%,\;3.5\%,\;5\% NaCl$ solution, the aspect of the crevice corrosion and polarization behavior under the crevice corrosion was investigated. And Weight loss rate of SS 400 with crevice and non-crevice was measured according to the NaCl concentration. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) Under crevice corrosion, the corrosion potential become less noble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased. 2) The current density under open circuit potential was high drained as concentration of NaCl solution increased by $3.5\%$ but the concentration increased over $3.5\%$, the current density was low drained. 3) The weight loss rate of SS 400 was increased as concentration of NaCl solution Increased by $3.5\%$, but the concentration increased over $3.5\%$, that of SS 400 was decreased. 4) Effect of oxygen for crevice corrosion in the concentration of $3.5\%$ NaCl solution become sensitive than that $0\%$ NaCl solution.

  • On this study, $CO_2$ gas, net of Ar gas, and mixed gas in solid wire(AWS ER 70S-6) and flux cored wire(AWS E71T-1) were used to weld on Mild steel(SS400). After the progress, the status changes of the welds in Mild steel(SS400) were investigated with compositional changes. For stable experiments, welding was conducted using the automatic feeder. Radiation testing, hardness testing, chemical composition analysis and penetrated cross-section were measured. Through these experiments, shapes of penetrated cross-section, chemical composition changes, and weld defects according to the variation of welding gas were known. Weld defects and weld cross-sectional shapes by the variation of the welding voltage were also detected.

  • The effect of Post-Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT) of SS400 Steel was investigated with parameters such as micro vickers hardness corrosion potential polarization behaviors galvanic current Al anode generating current Al anode weight loss etc. Hardness of each parts(HAZ, BM, WM)by PWHT is lower than that of each parts by Non Post-Weld Heat Treatment(NPWHT) However hardness of WM of HAZ part was the highest among those three parts and HAZ area were also acted as cathode without any case of heat treatment. Potential difference between each three parts by PWHT was also smaller compared to NPWHT. Therefore it is suggested that Corrosion resistance property is increased by PWHT. However both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss was also decreased by PWHT compared to NPWHT when SS400 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode.

  • This paper was studied on the effect of temperature on corrosion of absorption refrigeration systems using $LiBr-H_2O$ working fluids. In the fresh water and 62 % lithium bromide solution at $70^{\circ}C$, polarization test of SS 400, Cu(C1220T-OL) and Al-Ni bronze was carried out. And polarization behavior, polarization resistance characteristics, corrosion rate(mmpy) and corrosion sensitivity of materials forming absorption refrigeration systems was considered. The main results are as following: (1) As the experimental temperature increase, the change of corrosion rate of Al-Ni bronze become duller than SS 400 and Cu in 62% lithium bromide solution. (2) According as corrosion environment is changed from fresh water to 62% lithium bromide solution, potential change of Cu and Al-Ni bronze become less noble than SS 400. (3) The corrosion sensitivity of Al-Ni bronze was duller than that of Cu and SS 400 in 62% LiBr solution.
