STAR of STAR (SS 01-04) is a series of drinks that consist of various extracts obtained from Coriolus versicolor, Artemisia capillaris Thunb., Hovenia dulcis, Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, Lycium chinense, Citrus reticulata, Saururus chinensis, Pueraria lobata, Pyrus pyrifolia, and Oenanthe javanica. A purpose of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of SS 01-04. Antioxidant activity of the drinks was evaluated by conducting a hydroxyl radical-scavenging assay. Cytotoxicity and hepatoprotective potential were determined using HepG2 cells in vitro, while protective effects against acute hepatotoxicity was evaluated in vivo. The antioxidant activity of the SS 01-04 at concentration of 100 and 250 mg/mL was similar to that of $50{\mu}M$ vitamin C. tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP)-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was blocked by SS 01, 03 and 04 in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with SS 04 significantly lowered the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in an animal model of carbon tetrachloride $(CCl_4)-induced$ hepatotoxicity (p<0.05). In addition, SS04 increased glutathione level while decreased malondialdehyde level in the liver considerably (p<0.05). It also inhibited the $CCl_4-induced$ increase in the levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in serum and the liver. These findings indicated that SS 01-04 possessed antioxidant activity and protect against ROS. In particular, SS 04 is potentially highly beneficial in treating liver damage as it scavenges reactive free radicals and boosts the endogenous antioxidant system.
The photocatalytic degradation of livestock wastewater has been investigated over $TiO_2$ photocatalysts irradiated with a ultraviolet (UV) light. The effect of operational parameters, i.e., distance, reaction area, concentration of suspended solids(SS), and column diameter on the degradation of livestock wastewater has been performed in lab-scale. The optimal conditions for livestock wastewater were determined: distance was 3 cm (less than 7 cm), reaction area was $3.6\;m^2$, SS concentration was 40 mg/L (less than 300 mg/L) and column diameter was 5 mm (less than 10 mm). Under the optimal conditions, COD, color and coliform removal efficiencies were approximately 49%, 53% and 100%, respectively. Non-biodegradable COD removal efficiency increased with 57% using by photocatalysis process. Therefore, it is shown that photocatalysis has an effect on degradation of non-biodegradable organic matter.
Model for optimally dimensioned PE film bag was developed according to fruit size to maintain best quality of 'Fuyu' persimmon in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage based on relationship between quality and oxygen and carbon dioxide in PE film bag. Harvested persimmons were graded into five sizes, and average weights were LL:261, L:217, M:188, S:168, and SS:154 g. Five fruit units of each grade were optimized in five PE film bag sizes of $150{\times}376,\;140{\times}357,\;130{\times}344,\;130{\times}333,\;and\;120{\times}3l8\;mm$. To minimize quality deterioration such as softening and discoloration, optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in PE film bag were 0.5-1.0 and 6.0-8.0%, respectively, and optimal thickness of PE film bag according to fruit size were LL:45, L:50, M:55, S:60, and $SS:65\;{\mu}m$. For all fruit sizes, model for PE film bag area $(mm^2)$ was good quadratic simple equation by fruit weight (g): $Y=-4055.707+627.993X_1-0.701{X_1}^2$. Model far optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide (Y) concentration in PE film bag was suited to linear multiple equation by fruit weight $(X_1,\;g)$ and PE film thickness $(X_2,\;{\mu}m)$. Equations for oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations (%) were $Y=5.798-0.0109X_l-0.0491X_2\;and\;Y=-2.427+0.01927X_l +0.09646X_2$, respectively.
SWAT model is applied to simulate rainfall-runoff and pollutant loadings in the Nakdong River basin as the condition for extreme droughts and floods. The year 1994 and 2002 are chosen as the drought and flood year, respectively, through the analysis of past rainfall data for 30 years. The simulation results show decreases in both runoff and pollutant loadings for the drought year but increases for the flood year. However, the pollutant loadings on some upper sub-basins increase for drought year due to highly-regulated dam discharge and soil moisture change. Collectively, extreme droughts and floods have negative impacts on water quality, showing elevated SS loadings during wet season and concentrated T-P concentrations during low flow season. The extent of these impacts is highly influenced by antecedent dry days and precipitation patterns.

Water qualities (WQ) were measured biweekly from April 2nd to October 29th, 2003 in Sillicheon flowing into the entrance of Jumunjin Harbour and daily water quantities (river discharges) were estimated by the TANK model which has been widely used to compute the runoff discharges in the ungauged watersheds. The spatial and temporal change patterns of the measured WQs were analysed in detail and the correlation between rainfall - WQ and river discharge - WQ were also analysed. From this results, it is found that the correlation coefficient between BOD concentration and rainfall is 0.75 and between the SS concentration and 2-days river discharge is 0.36. The correlation between the COD, TN, TP in the station of Silli Lower Bridge and rainfall runoff quantity was analysed as un-correlated items. As a consequence, the estimated BOD and SS pollutants loads are reliable and show good change patterns even though the accuracy of SS pollutants load is slightly low. The estimated COD, TN and TP pollutants loads, however, can be used only as the reference or averaged values. In order to analyse more accurately the temporal change patterns of these items, more-detailed researches considering the artificial effects and landuse patterns are highly required.

In this study, variations of water quality, sediment size and contaminant substances are analyzed at upstream and downstream in sewer systems in order to evaluate the characteristics of wastewater transformation by physico-chemical and biological reactions. The differences of DOC concentration between up and down stream showed the range of $-5.8{\sim}18.6$ from the result of continuous measurement at up and down stream. About 8.4% of DOC concentration was reduced and reduction rate was 2.3 mg/L/km. SS reduction rate was measured by 5.5 mg/L/km, 0.22 mg/L/min from upstream to downstream, which was twice than DOC reduction rate. When pollution load reduction was evaluated considering infiltration/inflow effect, DOC load was eliminated from 1,230 ka/d to 1,167 kg/d by physi-chemical and biological reaction in a sewer and 7.8% of the SS in upstream station was reduced under dry weather condition. The results showed that the characteristics of transformation process of wastewater in sewer should be considered for design and operation of wastewater treatment plant.

Water quality variations were investigated at 4 locations of Jungrang river (upper, middle and lower basins) during a period of 3 rainfall events. During the rainfall, concentrations of $COD_{Mn}$, SS and $BOD_5$ significantly increased, while the concentration of T-N decreased and that of T-P remained relatively constant. This pattern became more apparent as the level of accumulative precipitation and rainfall intensity increased. Simple regression analysis showed that the accumulative precipitation was positively correlated with all water quality pollutants except for T-N. With increasing accumulative precipitation, the concentration of T-N decreased, while the others increased. $R^2$ of simple regressions of hourly average rainfall intensity and water quality pollutants, showed wider range of variation ranged from 0.483 to 0.992, which indicated a strong correlation. The stronger the hourly average rainfall intensity, the more T-N and T-P in the upper basin, more $COD_{Mn}$ in the middle and lower basins, more SS with gradual increase from upper to lower areas, and more $BOD_5$ with gradual decrease from upper to lower region. Simple regression showed that water quality pollution in the upper basin was more sensitive to an increase of rainfall discharge than that in the middle and lower areas.
This study was conducted to find out the coefficient relationships between intensity values image processing and pollution density of slurries. Slurry images were obtained from the image processing system using personnel computer and CCD-camera. Software, written in Visual $c^{++}$, combined the functions of the image capture, image processing and image analysis. The data of image processing for slurries were analyzed by the method of regression analysis. The results are as follows. 1. Red(R)-values among image processing data were obtained the highest correlation coefficient 0.9213 for detecting COD. Also, green(G)-value were obtained the highest correlation coefficient 0.9019 fur detecting BOD. Blue(B)-value could not find significant values to detect the pollution resources density. 2. Hue(H)-values among image processing data were obtained the highest correlation coefficient 0.9466 for detecting BOD. This fact could be used in detecting BOD 3. Green(G)-value, GRAY-value, Hue(H)-value, Saturation(5)-value and Intensity(I)-value were the correlation coefficient more than 0.8 for BOD. Hue(H)-value was higher correlation coefficient than any other value. It was possible to detect pollution density of slurries by using the image processing system. 4. Red(R)-value, GRAY-value and Saturation(5)-value were obtained the correlation coefficient more than 0.8 for detecting COD. a-value had the highest correlation coefficient Among these values. It was possible to detect density indirectly by using the image processing system. 5. SS-density were obtained the correlation coefficient less than 0.8 by using the image processing system. The density of $NH_4$-N and $NO_3$-N were obtained correlation coefficient less than 0.2.
