  • A track-type underwater construction robot (URI-R) was developed by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology. Because URI-R uses tracks to move on the seabed, insufficient ground strength may hinder its movement. For smooth operation of URI-R on the seabed, it is important to determine the geotechnical properties of the seabed. To determine these properties, standard penetration test (SPT), cone penetration test (CPT), and sampling are used on land. However, these tests cannot be applied on the seabed due to a high cost owing to the vessel, crane, sampler, and analysis time. To overcome these problems, a free fall cone penetration tester (FFCPT) is being developed. The FFCPT is a device that acquires the geotechnical properties during impact/penetration/finish phases by free fall in water. Depth information is crucial during soil data acquisition. As the FFCPT cannot measure the penetration depth directly, it is estimated indirectly using acceleration. The estimated penetration depth was verified by results of real tests conducted on land.

  • This paper reports the application of field tests to weak ground. In this study, field and laboratory tests were performed in the west seashore of KOREA(Ildo, Sore, Kunsan, Youngam). Applied tests are standard penetration test, cone penetration test, dilatometer test, field vane test, unconsolidated undrained test, oedometer test and other fundametal material properties tests. The results of in-situ test are used to estimate soil types and undrained shear strengths of five clay local deposits. SPT results showed low reliability and FVT war also demonstrated the best field test to weak clayey deposits.

  • Israel's coastal region consists, mainly, of Pleistocene and Holocene sands with varying degrees of calcareous cementation, known locally as "kurkar". Previous studies of these materials emphasized the difficulty in their geotechnical characterization, due to their extreme variability. Consequently, it is difficult to estimate construction stability, displacements and deformations on, or within these soils. It is suggested that SPT and Menard pressuremeter tests may be used to characterize the properties of these materials. Values of elastic modulus obtained from pressuremeter tests may be used for displacement analyses at different strain levels, while accounting for the geometric dimensions (length/diameter ratio) of the test probe. A relationship was obtained between pressuremeter modulus and SPT blow count, consistent with published data for footing settlements on granular soils. Cohesion values, for a known friction angle, are estimated, by comparing field pressuremeter curves to curves from numerical (finite element or finite difference) analyses. The material analyzed in the paper is shown to be strain-softening, with the initial cohesion degrading to zero on development of plastic shear strains.

  • Due to the variation of equipments and test procedure, level of energy transferred to split spoon sampler varies and thus measured N value. Since the properties and parameters are estimated from empirical correlations related to N value, the correction of N value with respect to specific energy level is essential. Factors affecting N value are discussed and the results of previous studies on energy correction of SPT N value is reviewed. Part of results from joint research works with KHC are presented and the range of energy levels for the hammer and release system typically used in Korea is suggested.

  • To study the carrying capacity behavior of pile, dynamic pile testis and static load tests were carried out on two instrumented piles during and some time after pile driving. Cone Penetration Test( CPT) and Standard Penetration Test(SPT) were also performed at the test site before pile tests to investigate the relationship between unit skin friction of piles and cone tip resistance values and SPT N values. Total static capacity of pile reached the ultimate stage at the pile head settlement of about 0.055D (D : Pile diameter), at which skin friction of Pile already Passed the maximum value, but the end bearing was still increasing with the pile head settlement. The carrying capacity of pile increased in the form of natural logarithmic function with the time after pile driving. The increase in skin friction with time was very substantial the increase in skin friction 40 days after pile driving was 4.6 times of that determined during pile driving. The contribution of skin friction to the total capacity twas insignificant in the beginning, but became substantial 40 days after pile driving. This implies that the tested pile initially responded as an end bearing pile and later behaved as a friction pile. It was also noted that unit skin friction of pile might be ielated to cone tip resistance values(q.) and SPT N values, though the coefficient of this relationship might differ from one soil group to another and was somewhat greater than the value used in the design practice of Korea.

  • Strength and deformation characteristics of oyster shell-sand mixtures were investigated to utilize waste oyster shell being treated as a waste material. Standard penetration test (SPT) is a common method to obtain in-situ strength in sand. However, in case of oyster shell-sand mixtures, there was no information between SPT N-value and internal friction angle of mixture soils. In this paper SPT experiments from several large scaled model chamber tests and large scaled direct shear tests were carried out with varying unit weight of oyster shell-sand mixtures. Appropriate correlations were in tile study observed among N-value, unit weight and internal friction angle, which make it possible to estimate in-situ strength from SPT and the coefficient of volume compressibility from the confined compression tests to compute the settlement of oyster shell-sand mixtures.

  • SPT-Uphole tomography method was introduced for the evaluation of near subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) distribution map. In SPT-Uphole method, SPT (Standard Penetration Test) which is common in geotechnical site investigation was used as a source and several surface geophones in line were used as receivers. Vs distribution map which is the triangular shape around the boring point can be developed by tomography inversion. To obtain the exact travel time information of shear wave component, a procedure using the magnitude summation of vertical and horizontal components was used based on the evaluation of particle motion at the surface. It was verified that proposed method could give reliable Vs distribution map through the numerical study using the FEM (Finite Element Method) model. Finally, SPT-Uphole tomography method was performed at the weathered soil site where several boring data with SPT-N values are available, and the feasibility of proposed method was verified in the field.

  • The settlement of foundations under working load conditions is an important design consideration. Well-designed foundations induce stress-strain states in the soil that are neither in the linear elastic range nor in the range usually associated with perfect plasticity. Thus, in order to accurately predict working settlements, analyses that are more realistic than simple elastic analyses are required. The settlements of footings in sand are often estimated based on the results of in-situ tests, particularly the standard penetration test (SPT) and the cone penetration test (CPT). In this paper, we analyze the load-settlement response of vertically loaded footings placed in sands using both the finite element method with a non-linear stress-strain model and the conventional elastic approach. Based on these analyses, we propose a procedure for the estimation of footing settlement in sands based on CPT results.
