  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate the attitude and the position of SPOT satellite which are needed in producing DEM(Digital Elevation Model) using SPOT satellite image pairs. DEM extraction is consists of three parts. First part is the modeling of satellite position and atitude, second part is the matching of two images to find corresponding point of them and third part is to calculate the elevation of each point by using the result of the first and second part. For modeling inaccessible area, extended modeling algorithm which removes the GCP(Ground Control Point) most errorneous from the GCPs extracted from map iteratively is proposed According to the experiments using a collinearity equation, the second order polynomials are shown to the optimal for .omega.(pitch), and Zs parameters while the first order ones for .kappa.(yaw) .PHI.(roll), Xs, and Ys parameters. The input images used in this paper are 6000*6000 level 1A panchromatic digital SPOT images of Chungchong-do, Korea. With 30 GCPs, experiments on SPOT images show that the planimetric and altimetric RMS errors are 7.11m and 7.10m, respectively, for test points.

  • The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the effects of focal spot size of X-ray tube on sharpness of clinical radiographic images of dogs and cats. Radiographic images of 24 stifle joints, 15 carpi, 18 lumbar spines, 61 thoraxes, and 47 abdomens of 102 dogs and 4 cats were obtained in the present study, using 2 X-ray tubes with nominal focal spots of 2.0 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. The sharpness of specific anatomical structures in all the images of 5 projections was assessed. The radiographic sharpness of various anatomical structures of lumbar spine and cortex of stifle with fine focal spot was increased significantly compared with broad focal spot images. In addition, the blurred motion was significantly higher in the fine focal spot images of thorax. In conclusion, our study suggests that a selective use of fine foci for imaging of lumbar spine or cortex of stifle enhanced radiographic sharpness.

  • A new High Resolution Geometry or HRG imaging instrument is developed by CNES to be carried on-board SPOT 5. The HRG instrument offers a higher ground resolution than that of the HRV/HRVIR on SPOT 1 - 4 satellites. The field width of HRG is 60 km, same as SPOT constellation. With two HRG instruments, a maximum swath of 120 km at 5 m resolution can be achieved. The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from satellite stereo images scores over conventional methods of DEM generation using topographic maps and aerial photographs. This global availability of satellite images allows for quicker data processing for an equivalent area. In this study, a HRG stereo images of SPOT 5 over JECHEON has been used with Leica Photogrammetry Suite OrthoBASE Pro tool for the creation of a digital elevation model (DEM). The extracted DEM was compared to the reference DEM obtained from the contours of digital topographic map.

  • The accuracy of input coordinates of ground control points and check points affects great influences to the results of ground coordinate computation in using SPOT digital image data. The original SPOT images displayed on CRT are not usually adequate for identifying the object features and determining the point positioning. Hence, appropriate image processing techniques such as contrast enhancement, subpixel interpolation, edge enhancement, and spatial filtering are needed. In this study, the principles of digital image processing needed for accurate three dimensional positioning and spectral characteristic analysis are investigated. The algorithms for the actual applications are developed and programmed. And using the developed image processing software, some SPOT P-mode and XS-mode images are merged into the SPOT P+XS, the high-resolution color composite image.

  • Geometric corrections are required to compensate skew effects, earth rotation effects and so on. Parameters for geometric modeling can be acquired from the metadata information. These parameters allow to locate on ground every pixel of acquired images. In this paper, we tested the precision of geometric modeling of linear pushbroom images, acquired by SPOT 3 and 5 using the satellite orbit information itself without additional external data. The result acquired from examination to recovery the geometry of image using 30 GCPs have about 650m RMSE in SPOT 3 and about 170m RMSE in SPOT 5.

  • In this paper, we generate the 3D geometric sensor model of SPOT-5 HRG stereo images which are processed in Supermode and have 2.5m ground spatial resolution, and calculate the RPC(Rational Polynomial Coefficients) for acquisition of topographic information using the exterior orientation parameters which are determined in the 3D geometric sensor modelling process. It is shown that SPOT-5 images can be modelled with me 3.3m accuracy by the bundle adjustment method used to model the existing SPOT series. Considering the accuracy of RPC's results with rmse 0.03m accuracy, the RPC model can replace the sensor model, if we emphasize the simplification and the cost.

  • We carried out accuracy assessment for DEM extraction from the KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images over Daejeon and Nonsan in Korea. DEM generation divided into two parts. One is camera modeling and the other stereo matching. We used Orun & Natarajan's(1994) model and Gupta & Hartley's(1997) model in the camera modeling step and checked the possibility using Orun & Natarajan and Gupta & Hartley's models in EOC stereo pairs. For stereo matching, we used an algorithms developed in-house for SPOT images and showed that this algorithm could work with EOC images. Using these algorithms, DEMs were successfully generated from EOC images. The comparison of DEM from EOC Images with a DEM from SPOT Images showed that EOC could be used for high-accuracy DEM generation.

  • In an attempt to enhance the visual effect of SPOT image, this study develops a neural network algorithm to transform SPOT false color into simulated true color. The method has been tested using Landsat TM and SPOT images. The qualitative and quantitative comparisons indicate that the striking similarity can be found between the true and simulated true images in terms of the visual looks and the statistical analysis.

  • In this study we applied a DEM generation algorithm developed in-house to satellite images at various resolution and discussed the results. We tested SPOT images at l0m resolution, EOC images at 6.6m and IKONOS images at 1m resolution. These images include the same urban area in Daejeon city. For camera model, we used Gupta & Hartley's(1997) DLT model for all three image sets. We carried out accuracy assessment using USGS DTED for SPOT and EOC and 23 check points for IKONOS. The assessment showed that SPOT DEM had about 38m RMS error, EOC DEM 12m RMS error and IKONOS DEM 6.5m RMS error. In terms of image resolution, SPOT and EOC DEM error corresponds to 2∼4 pixels where as IKONOS DEM error 6∼7pixels. IKONOS DEM contains more errors in pixels. However, in IKONOS DEM, individual buildings, apartments and major roads are identifiable. All three DEMs contained errors due to height discontinuity, occlusion and shadow. These experiments show that our algorithm can generate urban DEM from 1m resolution and that, however, we need to improve the algorithm to minimize effects of occlusion and building shadows on DEMs.

  • The geoscientists are very interested in a volcanic reactivity of Mt. Baekdu. Periodical observation and monitoring are thus needed to detect the topographic and environmental changes of Mt. Baekdu. It is, however, very restrictive to survey with difficulty of observer's accessibility in the field due to political problems. This study therefore is to produce digital elevation model (DEM) of Mt. Baekdu using SPOT-5 stereo images. The produced DEM is very not accurate because of using without ground control points (GCP). To correct the previously generated DEM, scale-invariant feature transform(SIFT) matching method is adopted with shuttle radar topography mission(SRTM) DEM of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL). The results of the produced DEM to SRTM DEM matching indicate that the corrected DEM from SPOT-5 stereo images has more detail topographic structures. In addition, difference of spatial distances between the corrected DEM and SRTM DEM are much smaller than non-corrected DEM.
