Soil Chemical Properties - Variation with Altitude and Forest Composition: A Case Study of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Western Himalaya (India)

  • The present study was carried out to evaluate the chemical properties of soil in relation to forest structure and composition at different altitudes (900-2,600 m asl) in a part of Western Himalaya. The composite soil samples were taken from three (viz. upper, middle and lower) depths. The soils of the whole study area were acidic in nature (pH=4.90-5.51). Contents of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Carbon (C) and soil organic matter (SOM) showed much fluctuation during different seasons of year. Nitrogen content showed significant positive correlations with altitude (r=0.924, p<0.05) and different community parameters like species diversity (r=0.892, p<0.01) and species richness (r=0.941, p<0.05). Phosphorus exhibited direct correlations with carbon (r=0.637) while weak negative correlations with different community parameters like species richness & diversity, total basal cover (TBC), density and canopy cover. Carbon content and hence SOM showed direct correlations with Nitrogen (r=0.821, p<0.01); Phosphorus (r=0.637, ns) and Potassium (r=0.540, ns). But no significant relationship was observed between K content and species richness (p=0.30, r=-0.504); between K content and species diversity (p=0.14, r=-0.672); between P content and species diversity (p=0.29, r=-0.513) and species richness (p=0.23, r=-0.575). Among the different soil nutrients, only N showed a significant positive correlation with altitude while all others exhibited negative (but non-significant) correlation with it. The study revealed that the chemical properties affect and are reciprocally affected by forest structure and composition and that N rich soils of higher altitudes are best for the growth and development of forests.

서울지역 삼림에서 세포성 점균의 분포와 토양 미생물과의 관계 (The Distribution of Cellular Slime Molds in Forests of Seoul Area and Relationship between Cellular Slime Molds and Soil Microorganisms)

  • In this study, the distribution of dictyostelid cellular slime molds was investigated from F, H and $A_1$ horizon of pinus, oak forests in Mt. Puk'an, Mt. Nam and Mt. Kwanak. The relationship of cellular slime molds with other soil microorganisms and abiotic factors were analyzed. The six species were isolated as follows: Polysphondlium pallidurn, Dictyostelium purpureum, D. mucoroides, D. crassicaule, D. capitatum, D. implicatum. The dominant species in pinus forests was P. pallidum, and in oak forests it was D. macro ides. In Mt. Nam, D. mucoroides and P. pallidum were isolated at only oak forest. The Correlations of slime mold abundance with bacteria were significant. Even though positive correlations of cellular slime molds with actinomycetes or fungi were not significant, correlations between soil microorganisms were analyzed. Correlation coefficients were high in Mt. Kwanak(r=0.5921) and Mt. Nam(r=0.7243) at significant level P<0.01. There were significant correlations between total slime molds and abiotic factors. It supports that cellular slime molds are limited by foods in nature. In low level of pH, water content and organic matter, that community diversity is more affected by bacteria whose organic degradation capacity is regulated by interactions of soil microorgaisms. Changes in macroalgal assemblage with sea urchin density on the east coast of South Korea

  • Urchin barrens have been a major issue of rocky coastal ecosystems in temperate regions. In South Korea, the east coast and Jeju Island have especially been a focus because the area of barren ground increases in spite of continual efforts to install artificial reefs. This study approached the urchin barrens issue in South Korea, by focusing on a correlational analysis of urchin and macroalgal abundance. Urchin density and algal species coverage were obtained using a quadrat image analysis. Subtidal sites were then classified into three groups according to the average densities of urchins to evaluate the characterization of the macroalgal community: no urchin (NU) zone; transition (TR) zone, $4inds.\;m^{-2};$ and urchin (UR) zone, ${\geq}8inds.\;m^{-2}$. The average urchin density in the study site was $4.7inds.\;m^{-2}$ and 57 macroalgal species were found in the study site. From the NU zone to UR zone, total species number, species diversity index and evenness gradually decreased, whereas the dominance index increased. The algae species with negative correlations were Grateloupia divaricata, Polysiphonia morrowii, Chondracanthus intermedius, Delesseria violacea, Desmarestia viridis; and those with positive correlations were the crustose corallines, Sargassum horneri. Other species were not significantly correlated with urchin density. The significant correlations indicate that the abundance of some macroalgal species is proportionally regulated by sea urchin density. This study also shows how macroalgal vegetation changes in response to an urchin's density gradient in a natural condition; and there is a TR zone that existed with respect to an intermediate level of algal abundance.

황칠처리재의 도막 물성 및 내구성 (Durability and Properties of Coating Film on Lumbers Coated with Hwangchil)

  • To investigate weathering and surface characteristics of coating film on lumbers coated with Hwangchil(varnish of Dendropanax morbifera), we carried out to investigate the resistance against discoloration, value of crack and surface characteristics of coating films on seven domestic lumbers and those of four introduced tropical lumbers. There was investigated to evaluate the properties of coating films by the varnish of Dendropanax morbifera. There was insignificant correlations between the hardness and moisture contents of each lumber treated by the varnish. There was no significant correlations between the thickness of coating film and the hardness, either. Although we investigated 11 wood species, we found only three species as resistance wood species against discoloration; Diospysos spp., Abies holophylla and Ulmus davidiana. The crack of coaing films was the largest on Zelkova serrata followed by Juglans sinensis, Cercidiphum japonicum, Tectona grands, Ulmus davidiana, Guibourtia tessmannii, Diospysos spp. and Dalbergia latifolia. However, there was no crack of coating films on the lumbers of Juniperus rigida, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea and Abies holophylla. The crack of coating film showed positive correlations with the thickness of coating film and hardness. The surface characteristics of the coating films evaluated on the basis of $R_{a}$ values indicated the lumbers of Ulmus davidiana($0.14{\;}{\mu}m$), Juniperus rigida($0.1 5{\;}{\mu}m$), Guibourtia tessmannii($0.19{\;}{\mu}m$), Dalvergia latifolia($0.20{\;}{\mu}m$) and Diospysos spp.($0.20{\;}{\mu}m$), Cercidiphum japonicum($0.24{\;}{\mu}m$) as good species while there was insignificant differences between softwoods and hardwoods. Tectona grands, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea and Abies holophylla showed rough surface with $1.53~2.63{\;}{\mu}m$ of $R_a$ values. The four kinds of rough indices($R_a,{\;}R_z,{\;}R_{max}{\;}and{\;}R_q$) showed very low correlations with moisture contents with the correlation coefficients. The $R_a{\;}and{\;}R_{max}$ also showed slight relationship with hardness.

동해 남부 연안 정치망어업의 수온에 따른 종조성 변동 특성 연구 (Characteristics of Changes in Species Composition with Water Temperature in Set Net Fishing on the Southern Coast of the East Sea)

  • The southern coast of the East Sea is an important area affected by large warm currents as it connects the coastal waters of Jeju Island, the South Sea, and Dokdo. From 2017 to 2021, the average catch per unit effort (CPUE; kg/day/ship) of set net fishery at six ports in the Gyeongbuk region off the southern coast of the East Sea was the highest in Gampo, Gyeongju, and the lowest in Hupo, Uljin. Although the seasonal variation in the CPUE differed by region and year, it was generally high in autumn. In the set net fishery in Pohang from 2019 to 2021, we identified 72 species, which decreased to 56 species in 2019, 46 in 2020, and 41 in 2021. The species diversity index slightly increased over the three-year periods. We found positive correlations between the total catch (kg) of subtropical species in autumn and the water temperature at 50 m. Among the most abundant species, we found substantially positive correlations between the CPUE of Scomber japonicus, Scomberomous spp. and Carangids. We also noted positive correlations between the CPUE of Todarodes pacificus, Seriola spp. and Carangids.

Seasonal variation in kelp phlorotannins in relation to grazer abundance and environmental variables in the Alaskan sublittoral zone

  • Phlorotannins are common metabolites produced in kelps that can have deterrent functions against grazers. The factors dictating seasonal patterns of phlorotannin content in northeastern Pacific kelps are not well understood. This study assessed density and grazing of the gastropod Lacuna vincta on the annual canopy-forming kelp Nereocystis luetkeana and the perennial understory species Agarum clathratum, Saccharina latissima and S. groenlandica in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. In addition, we assessed seasonal patterns of environmental variables as possible drivers of phlorotannin concentrations. Phlorotannins occurred in all species, with overall lowest levels in N. luetkeana, and with different seasonal patterns among the four species. Lacuna vincta was most dense on N. luetkeana thalli in the summer and had highest grazing rates on this low-phlorotannin species. However, correlations between L. vincta density and phlorotannin content of each kelp species were not significant. Except for N. luetkeana, there were no correlations between phlorotannin levels and environmental variables. We suggest that kelp life history traits may be more important for phlorotannin patterns in these kelp species than grazers or environmental drivers.

오대산 국립공원 동대산, 두노봉, 상왕봉 지역의 삼림군집구조에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Structure of Forest Community at Dongdaesan, Turobong, Sangwangbong Area in Odaesan National Park)

  • 오대산 국립공원의 동대산, 두노봉, 상왕봉 지구를 중심으로 분포하고 있는 천연림의 생육현황과 구조를 정확히 파악하고자, 이 지역에 27개의 방형구(20$\times $20m)를 설치하여 식생을 조사하였다. Cluster 분석한 결과 세 개의 집단으로 분류되었다. 수종간의 상관관계는 피나무와 당단풍, 야광나무와 개회나무, 돌배나무와 백당나무 등의 수종들 간에는 비교적 높은 정의 상관관계를, 신갈나무와 귀룽나무, 피나무와 귀룽나무, 당단풍과 귀룽나무 등의 수종들 간에는 높은 부의 상관관계를 보였다. 본 조사지의 종 다양도는 0.9586~1.1814로 비교적 높게 나타났다.

  • 주왕산국립공원의 왕거암과 금은광이 지역(400-700m)을 중심으로 분포하고 있는 천연림의 생육현황과 구조를 정확히 파악하고자. 이 지역에 23개의 방형구(20$\times$20m)를 설치하여 식생을 조사하였다. Cluster분석한 결과 두 개의 집단으로 분류되었다. 수종간의 상관관계는 서어나무와 피나무, 고로쇠나무와 말발도리, 조록싸리와 팥배나무등의 수종들 간에는 비교적 높은 정의 상관관계를, 산벚나무와 팥배나무, 고로쇠나무와 쇠물푸레, 말발도리와 굴참나무 등의 수종들 간에는 높은 부의 상관관계를 보였다. 본 조사지의 종다양도는 1.2167-1.3945로 비교적 높게 나타났다.

  • 덕유산 국립공원의 고산지대 (해발 1,350m이상)를 대상으로 삼림식생의 실태와 삼림군집 구조를 정확히 파악하고자, 자연보존지구에 29개의 방형구(20$\times$20m)를 설치하여 식생을 조사하였다. Cluster 분석한 결과 네 개의 집단으로 분류되었다. 수종간의 상관관계는 신갈나무와 들메나무, 들메나무와 노린재나무 및 싸리, 시닥나무와 주목, 함박꽃나무와 작살나무, 주목과 구상나무 등의 수종들 간에는 비교적 높은 정의 상관관계를, 신갈나무와 시닥나무, 주목 및 괴불나무 등의 수종들 간에는 높은 부의 상관관계를 보였다. 본 조사지의 종다양도는 0.9969~l.2217로 비교적 높게 나타났다.
