  • The purpose of this study is to clarify when spawning occurs of Clupea pallasii in the coastal waters of Jinhae Bay and Yeongun-ri, Tongyeong, Korea from December to February using SCUBA observation which is known as spawning season. Eighteen surveys of SCUBA diving observations have performed at 3 stations of Jinhae Bay from December 2017 to January 2018 and 24 times of survey at Yeongun-ri, Tongyeong from December 2017 to February 2018. In Jinhae Bay, average 740,274 eggs/㎡ fertilized eggs were observed in Judo Island and average 671,718 eggs/㎡ were observed in Gusan-myeon. On December 30, 2017, about 388,444 eggs/㎡ fertilized eggs were observed in Yeongun-ri, Tongyeong but no eggs were founded in next surveys. The results in this study suggest that spawning season of C. pallasii in the coastal waters of Jinhae Bay and Tongyeong begins in late December at average 7.7℃ water temperature.

  • A fisheries biological study on the hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus LINNAEUS), which was collected from Cheju City, Hanrim, Sungsanpo and Seogwipo in Cheju Island, was carried out from June through December In 1992. GSI of the hairtail maintained relatively high from June to September, and then it began to decrease in October and remained low until December. The maturation and spawning period was between June and October, and the major spawning occurred in August. The hairtail turned out to be a multiple spawning species which spawn two or three times In a single spawning season. During the spawning season the number of females was greater than that of males, whereas the sex ratio was almost 1 : 1 during the rest of the season. Fecundity estimated from various sizes of the hairtail ranged from 12,821 to 125,876. The bigger the snout anal length and body weight of the hairtail was, the more eggs it possessed.

  • The reproductive biology of largehead hairtail Trichiurus japonicus, from near Jeju Island, Korea was investigated based on 4,384 individuals collected by commercial vessel from November 2016 to October 2019. There were more female specimens than male specimens (2.64:1). T. japonicus preanal lengths (PL) ranged from 10.5 to 53.5 cm; the relationships between PL and body weight (BW) were BW=0.0103PL3.1293 for females and BW=0.0106PL3.1251 for males. Monthly changes in gonadosomatic index were analyzed to estimate spawning season. The spawning period ranged from June to November. The size-frequency distribution of eggs suggested that T. japonicus exhibits multiple-spawning during a spawning period. The minimum size of females at maturity was 18.2 cm, while the size at sexual maturity was 25.0 cm.

  • The seasonal changes in the muscle components of hibernant fish, amphibious mudskipper (Boleopthalmus pectinirostris), caught during the period between June 1993 and April 1994 were studied. The distributional changes of its major components in each muscle tissues was also observed before and after spawning and hibernation. Moisture content was the lowest after spawnig season and the highest just after hibernation, but crude protein was the highest after spawning sea-son. Crude lipid in female was the highest before spawning season, while in male it was the highest after spawning season, but both of female and male the lowest just after hibernation. Carbohydrate content in female and male showed the highest value just before hibernation and tended to decrease thereafter. In case of mudskipper, dyeing distribution was more or less spread in almost all of the tissues after spawning season but showed nearly no difference just after hibernation with the exception of small increase in dyeing degree of muco layer and epidermis layer. Investigation of mudskipper muscle tissue through the method of sudan black B dyeing yielded the results as follows ; lipid component in mudskipper in seasons before and after spawning season was percieved as mainly distributed in muco layer, epidermis and hypodermis layer respectively and also percieved a little between hypodermis subscutoneus cells. In season just before hibernation, it prevailed in almost all of the tissues, contrary to the weakness in its distribution degree just after hibernation.

  • The age and spawning characteristics of Iksookimia pacifica were investigated in this study to provide baseline data for its ecological characteristics in the Bukcheon (stream), Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea from January to December, 2013. Age groups of I. pacifica (female) estimated by the frequency distribution of total length in the spawning season indicated that the 30~49 mm group is 1 year old, the 50~74 mm group is 2 years old, the 75~99 mm group is 3 years old, the 100~124 mm group is 4 years old, and the 130~160 mm group is $5{\leq}$years old. The sex ratio (♂/♀) was 0.63, and females were 30~60 mm larger than males. The lamina circularis at the base of pectoral fins in males as a secondary sexual character was created at the 13th month after hatching. The spawning season according to the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was July to August (main spawning season in July) with water temperatures of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. The average number of eggs was $2,503{\pm}1,337$ with a diameter of $1.11{\pm}0.04mm$ in mature eggs.

  • We investigated the gonadosomatic index (GSI), germ cell development, reproductive cycle of the Afriean lungfish Protorierus annecteus (Owen) by histological observations and morphometric data. Samples were collected from the river Orie and its flood of Nigeria, from January to December 2000. The fish is dioecious and oviparous. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed a similar pattern to change in the mean oocyte diameter and the reproductive cycle. The reproductive period occurred from March to July-August; the spawning period was once a year between truly and August, and the main spawning occurred in August when active and voracious feeding occurred during the rainy season. In the resting (dormant) stage after spawning, fish stopped feeding and aestivated during the dry season from December to February. The reproductive cycle of the species can be divided into five successive stages, quiescent stage (March to April), developing/maturing stage (April to lune), ripe/spawning stage (July to August), post-spawning stage (September to November), and resting (dormant) stage (December to February).

  • The gametogenic cycle, the number of spawning seasons per year and first sexual maturiity of the pen shell, Atrina (Servatrina) pectinata, were investigated by quantitative statistical analysis using an Image Analyzer System. Compared two previous results (the spawning periods in the reproductive cycles in 1998 and 2006) by qualitative histological analysis with the present results by quantitative statistical analysis, there are some differences in the spawning periods: the spawning period (June to September) by quantitative statistical analysis was one month longer than those of two previous reports (June to July or June to August) by qualitative histological analysis. However, the number of spawning seasons studied by the qualitative and quatitative analyses occurred once per year. In quantitative statistical analysis using an image analyzer system, the patterns of monthly changes in the percent (%) of the areas occupied by follicles to the ovary area in females (or that of the areas occupied by spermatogenic stages to the testis area in males) showed a maximum in May, and then sharply droped from June to September, 2006. From these data, it is apparent that the spawning season of A. (S.) pectinata occurred once a year from June to September, indicating a unimodal gametogenic cycle during the year. Shell heights of sexually mature pen shells (size at 50% of group sexual maturity, $GM_{50}$) that were fitted to an exponential equation were 15.81 cm in females and 15.72 cm in males (considered to be one year old).

  • This study aims to understand the relationship between the distribution of fish species in the two water ecosystems and the habitat factors according to the survey period targeting Gwanggyo Lake Park in the city. There are studies on the appearance and distribution of species by applying eDNA to freshwater ecosystems. However, in the domestic, streams are the target, and studies on the relationship between species distribution and habitat environment in two water environments are lacking. We conducted to analyze the species list and relationship with habitat factors using eDNA research in May and October at 21 points in Gwanggyo Lake Park, Suwon City, which were connected to lakes and streams. As a result, there was no species difference in the water environment according to the survey period. However, the total number of reads during the spawning season(May) was 3,126,482, which was more than double that after the spawning season(October). Tolerant species appeared in Woncheon Lake with a slow or stagnant flow, but there was no significant correlation between species and habitat factors depending on the survey period. On the other hand, intermediate and sensitive species appeared in the Woncheon stream with high flow. There was a significant correlation between the low temperature during the spawning season and the high dissolved oxygen content after the spawning season(P<0.001, Tem.: 20.7±2.6℃, DO: 8.6±1.7). It is expected that environmental DNA will be used to survey species and suggest monitoring methods according to the survey period.

  • This study was carried out to obtain fundamental data on the metabolism of hibernant fish loach, Misgurnus mizolepis. Main focus was on the compositon of muscle components and its changes in fresh - water loach before and after spawning season and before and after hibernation. Distributional changes of carbohydrate, protein and lipid in the muscle tissues were also investigated. Change patterns of miosture and crude protein, and moisture and crude lipid were in inversely proportional, i.e. : moisture amount showed the lowest value after spawnig season, the highest just after hibernation, but crude protein and crude lipid were the highest values after spawning season, and the lowest just after hibernation. Carbohydrate showed the highest value just before hibernation and tended to decrease thereafter. Muco layer of epidermis and muscle cell of hypodermis layer in loach were remarkable in its PAS dyeing degree after sapwning season, and it was presumed to include high percentage of protein or carbohydrate. Dermis layer became thinner before spawning hibernation. Lipid component in female tended to distribute relatively widely in the muscle cell layer before spawning season, but in case of male mainly in muco layer and epidermis layer. It appeared that lipid was spreaded mainly in epidermis and hypodermis tissue after spawning season, while it prevailed in almost all tissues but tended to decrease after hibernation.

  • The maturity and spawning of Pacific cod, Gadus macrocephalus, was studied using samples caught by gillnets in the East Sea from January to December 2003. Monthly changes of maturity observed with the naked eyes for females showed that maturing Pacific cod appeared from August, and their numbers increased to $83\%\;and\;100\%$ in November and December, respectively. In January, mature and spawning Pacific cod were observed for the first time and composed over $40\%$ of the population. In February, the proportion of spawning individuals increased to over $50\%$, however, the mature individuals decreased to less than $10\%$. In March, mature fish were not found, and all were in an immature (spent) or spawning state. From April to July all fish remained in immature condition. The males maintained this trend with the females, whereas, mature males appeared from November to March. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females and males showed higher values both in January and February and declined sharply in March. The lower value remained until October and then began to increase from November for the female population. For the males, however, this value remained lower until August, and then began to increase from September, and showed higher values in October through December than in January and February. These results indicated that the spawning season of Pacific cod was from December to March, and the main spawning season was from January to February, and the period of the spawning season was longer for males than the females. The diameter of the matured oocytes was 0.80-1.10 mm with a single mode of 0.95 mm. Fecundity was 1,300,000-9,400,000 in total length of 65-95 cm and the relationship between the total length (TL, cm) and fecundity (Fc) was Fc= $180,248\timesTL-10,883,638$. The total length at first maturity was observed at 57 cm for females and 47 cm for males. The size at $50\%$ group maturity was estimated to be 63.9 cm for females and 56.0 cm for males.
