  • A spatial join has the property that its execution time exponentially increases in proportion to the number of spatial objects. Recently, there have been many attempts for improving the performance of the spatial join by using parallel processing schemes, In the case of executing parallel spatial join using the parallel machine with shared disk architecture, the disk bottleneck of parallel processing of spatial join worsens in comparison with sequential spatial join. This paper presents the algorithms of task creation and assignment to reduce the disk bottleneck caused by accessing the shared disk at the same time, and to minimize message passing between processors, This paper proposes object caching which is a higher level of abstraction than page caching, and uses it to do creation and assignment of tasks according to temporal and spatial localities for minimizing disk access time. The object caching shows the performance improvement of 50%. The task creation and assignment using localities gives the gain of 30% and 20%. Overall performance evaluation of the proposed algorithms shows 7.2 times speed up than those of sequential execution of spatial joins.

  • By the rapid development of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Geo-spatial Technology (GT) and the increased usage of spatial data for planning and infrastructure management, the National Geographic Information System (NGIS) for more efficient and effective utilization of spatial information has been developed by the central government in Korea since 1995. NGIS is the base of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). SDI is developed as one of National Information Infrastructures (NII). Among the hierarchy of SDI, National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) has very important role in the success of SDI development. Many research articles show that the USA's NSDI initiatives, development strategy have been strongly influenced all over the world. In these viewpoints, to propose the future directions of Korean NGIS, the development of NSDI strategy of USA is reviewed by literature through published book and internet resources. The conclusions of this study are as follow: 1) top-down and bottom-up approach are needed for integrated data sharing and standardization. 2) the creative and evolutionary vision and strategy has to be suggested. 3) the training program and lecture material has to be developed and diffused to the users and providers of spatial data. 4) governance system has to be built for NSDI evaluation. 5) the formation of geo-spatial forum to discuss the spatial-related problems and make research agenda, etc.

  • This research focuses on accomplishing analysis problems and issues by examining the policies and systems related to geo-spatial big data which have recently arisen, and suggests political and systemic improvement plan for service activation. To do this, problems and probable issues concerning geo-spatial big data service activation should be analyzed through the examination of precedent studies, policies and planning, pilot projects, the current legislative situation regarding geo-spatial big data, both domestic and abroad. Therefore, eight political and systematical improvement plan proposals are suggested for geo-spatial big data service activation: legislative-related issues regarding geo-spatial big data, establishing an exclusive organization in charge of geospatial big data, setting up systems for cooperative governance, establishing subsequent systems, preparing non-identifying standards for personal information, providing measures for activating civil information, data standardization on geo-spatial big data analysis, developing analysis techniques for geo-spatial big data, etc. Consistent governmental problem-solving approaches should be required to make these suggestions effectively proceed.

  • In this study, TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) is installed in a retractable-roof spatial structure in order to investigate dynamic response characteristics according to mass ratio and installed position of TMD on large spatial structures. The example analytical model is generated based on the Singapore sports hub stadium. Twenty eight analytical models are used to investigate optimal installation position of TMD for the example retractable-roof spatial structure using 4 to 16 TMDs. The mass of one TMD is set up 1% of total mass at the example analytical model. Displacement response ratio of model with TMD is compared with that of base model without TMD. It has been found from numerical simulation that it is more effective to install TMD at the edge of the spatial structure rather than to concentrate the TMD at the center of the spatial structure.

  • This paper discusses the spatial variability of the carbonation depth caused by the mesoscopic structure of the concrete and the influence of the spatial variability on the thickness of the concrete cover. To conduct the research, a method to generate the random aggregate structure (RAS) based on polygonal particles and a simplified numerical model of the concrete carbonation at meso-scale are firstly developed. Based on the method and model, the effect of the aggregate properties including shape, content and gradation on the spatial variability of the carbonation depth is comprehensively studied. The results show that a larger degree of the spatial variability will be obtained by using (1) the aggregates with a larger aspect ratio; (2) a larger aggregate content; (3) the gradation which has more large particles. The proper sample size and model size used in the analysis are also studied. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the influence of the spatial variability of the carbonation depth on the proper thickness of the concrete cover. The research in this paper not only provides suggestions on how to decrease the spatial variability, but also proposes the method to consider the effect of the spatial variability in designing the thickness of the concrete cover.

  • One of the key problems in the design of high-rise commercial complex is how to guide reasonable pedestrian distribution in commercial space. In this study, pedestrian distribution in three high-rise commercial complexes in Shanghai and Hong Kong was studied using spatial configuration analysis software Space Syntax and quantification of physical elements in commercial spaces, such as functional attractiveness, entrances, escalators, level variations and passage width. Additionally, in an attempt to integrate functions with spatial integration and spatial depth, two combination variables, the spatial coefficient of function (IF) and spatial depth coefficient of function (F/D), were proposed. The results of the correlation analysis and multiple regression analyses reflected the following: (1) Regarding the influence on pedestrian distribution, there was a synergistic and complementary relationship between function and space; (2) The comprehensive flow distribution analytic model could successfully interpret flow distribution in high-rise commercial complexes and its R Square ranged up to about 70% in the three cases; (3) The spatial coefficient of function (IF) and spatial depth coefficient (F/D) could effectively integrate functions and spatial configuration, which could help close the gap between over-emphasis on function in commercial research and the lack of consideration of function in space-syntax analysis.

  • The I/O performance for spatial queries is extremely important since the handling of huge amount of multidimensional data is required in spatial databases for geographic information systems. Therefore, we describe representative spatial access methods handling complex spatial objects, z-transform B tree, KDB tree, R tree, MAX tree, to increase I/O performance. In addition, we measure the performance of spatial indexing schemes by testing against various realistic data and query sets. Results from the benchmark test indicates that MAX outperforms other indexing schemes on insertion, range query, spatial join. MAX tree is expected to use as index scheme organizing storage system of GIS in the future.

  • Steel roof construction is on the most important and critical factors in the large spatial construction and necessary to be prepared under a radical planning. Therefore, the major management factors of steel roofing structure assembly must be critically reviewed during planning. Through the review process, it is necessary to reduce the construction cost, to prevent delays in the construction schedule, and to minimize construction errors. However, domestically due to the lack experience in large spatial constructions, a planning of roof construction is limited to have a radical planning. Especially due to unclear organization of the management factors in hierarchy, using them in reality for construction planning is difficult and reliability is low. Therefore, in this study, the goal is to conduct the major management factors in the large spatial construction. To achieve this, we have reviewed and analyzed the numbers of construction plans and construction reports and conducted a total 68 of the management factors. Based on the conducted factors, we have interviewed 16 experts with experience in large spatial construction. From the interview result, we have deduced the factors scored above 4.20 of 10 for critical factors. The results of this study will be used as a guidance for planning steel roofing structure assembly in large spatial construction. The critical factors will be provided to the site mangers for the quality management of large spatial constructions in practice.

  • Occupants' visual perception, psychological responses and spatial satisfaction under various indoor lighting environments were analyzed in this study. Field measurements and surveys were conducted in four coffeeshop space where different lighting conditions were used. Results imply that worse visual comfort was reported under direct lighting conditions that exposed light sources to occupants. To improve spatial satisfaction in space, lighting environments should lessen visual thresholds and distraction. Also, necessary illuminance levels should be kept with appropriate color of light that occupants prefer. Worse spatial satisfaction was reported under direct lighting environments, and spatial satisfaction was strongly relevant to visual comfort. Psychological comfort for space was positive in space where visual thresholds were minimized and visual comfort was positively evaluated. Psychological and spatial satisfaction was relevant each other. Occupants preferred to stay longer in space where psychological and spatial satisfaction was positively achieved due to less visual thresholds and improved visual comfort. Better psychological and spatial satisfaction was achieved in space where temporary mood and visual perception were favorably evaluated under indirect lighting environments.

  • In order to answer questions successfully on behalf of the human contestant in DeepQA environments such as 'Jeopardy!', the American quiz show, the computer needs to have the capability of fast temporal and spatial reasoning on a large-scale commonsense knowledge base. In this paper, we present a hybrid spatial reasoning algorithm, among various efficient spatial reasoning methods, for handling directional and topological relations. Our algorithm not only improves the query processing time while reducing unnecessary reasoning calculation, but also effectively deals with the change of spatial knowledge base, as it takes a hybrid method that combines forward and backward reasoning. Through experiments performed on the sample spatial knowledge base with the hybrid spatial reasoner of our algorithm, we demonstrated the high performance of our hybrid spatial reasoning algorithm.
