For the efficient recovering of collapsed sloped soil, using a soil binder that can support the soil strongly and help the growth of plants is very important. The soil binder should also have functions of recovering the soil ecologically as well as be environmental friendly materials. In this research, optimum values of the water content and permeability and direct shear strength were searched by adding the water absorbent and coagulant into the soil binder. The polyacrylamide (PAM) with various anionic strength, super absorbent polymer (SAP) and cellulose ether (CE) were used as a soil binder, water absorbent and coagulant, respectively. Effects of the soil binder on the characteristics of soil were observed by changing the mixing ratio of PAM, SAP and CE. Experimental results showed that the soil binder increased the direct shear strength tens of times and the water content around two times, whereas decreased the water permeability. Also, the addition of CE to increase the coagulation of SAP increased more of the direct shear strength and water content.

Three soils, sandy loam, loam and silty clay loam, were selected and three inches soil cores with 4 bulk density(BD) levels were made by compressing the soils wetted with 3 levels water. Mechanical and water characteristics were measured and analyzed the mechanical resistance limiting water, available water and least-limiting water range. Mechanical resistance limiting water(MRLW) were appeared at higher bulk density than $1.6Mg/m^3$ in sandy loam, and $1.4Mg/m^3$ in loam and silty clay loam. The least-limiting water ranges were sharply decreased at the bulk density $1.6Mg/m^3$ in sandy loam and loam, $1.4Mg/m^3$ in silty clay loam. There were big deferences between available water contents and least limiting water ranges in finer texture and higher bulk density soils.
This study was carried out to investigate the surface soil organic carbon fractions affecting by different land use types, including needle-leaf forest (FN), broad-leaf forest (FB), pasture, annual upland cropping land (upland), and paddy rice land (paddy). We chose seven regions across Korean inland, considering sea level altitude, and measured soil organic carbon content and physico-chemical properties such as bulk density at a depth of 0~15 cm using core samples in April for the each land use type. In addition, labile organic carbon fractions in soil including light fraction and hot water extractable carbon were investigated. From this study, organic carbon storage (Mg C per ha) in the upper 15-cm soils was highest in FB (37.8), and decreased in the order of pasture (29.1), FN (28.8), paddy (21.9), and upland crop (19.9). In forest, more than 20% of soil organic carbon existed as light fraction, the free organic matter. Hot-water extractable carbon contents of soils in five land use types were lower than 7% of their soil organic carbon content.

The electrical conductivity, EC is a major indicator of soil salinity. Measuring EC of saturation-paste extract of soil, ECe, is the standard way to evaluate soil salinity. However much of the data on soil salinity have been obtained by measuring the EC of the 1:5 soil-to-water extract, EC(1:5) or salts contents(%) which multiplied by conversion factor. And, thus we attempted to collect and analysis 90 soil samples at 9 reclaimed tidelands in Korea and to derive a relationship between ECe and dilution factor at ECe and EC(1:5), $DF_{1:5}$ of 3 soil textural conditions and 6 salinity conditions. Regression equations between ECe and $DF_{1:5}$ were obtained $ECe=1.4701ln(DF_{1:5})+5.0974(r^2=0.97^{**})$ in case of more than 50% silt contents, $ECe=2.1399ln(DF_{1:5})+5.3462 (r^2=0.99^{***})$ in case of below 50% silt contents, and $ECe=1.5927ln(DF_{1:5})+5.2486 (r^2=0.98^{***})$ in all cases, and then we suggested the $DF_{1:5}\;and\;DF_%$ of 3 soil textural conditions and 6 salinity conditions.

To understand the difference of runoff discharge processes between Gwangneung deciduous and coniferous forest catchments, we collected hydrological data (e.g., precipitation, soil moisture, runoff discharge) and conducted hydrochemical analyses in the deciduous and coniferous forest catchments in Gwangneung National Arboretum in the northwest part of South Korea. Based on the end-member mixing analysis of the three storm events during the summer monsoon in 2005, the hillslope runoff in the deciduous forest catchment was higher 20% than the coniferousforest catchment during the firststorm event. Howerver, hillslope runoff increased from the second storm event in the coniferous catchment. We conclude that low soil water contents and topographical gradient characteristics highly influence runoff in the coniferous forest catchment during the first storm events. In general, coniferous forests are shown high interception loss and low soil moisture compared to the deciduous forests. It may also be more likely to be a reduction in soil porosity development when artificial coniferous forests reduced soil biodiversity. The forest soil porosity is an important indicator to determine the water recharge of the forest. Therefore, in order to secure the water resources, it should be managed coniferous forests for improving soil biodiversity and porosity.
The purpose of this study was to determine the engineering and environmental properties of the waste tire powder-added lightweight soil (TLS) used as flowable backfill. The TLS used in this experiment consisted of dredged soil, bottom ash, waste tire powder and cement. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals and water contents ranging from 140% to 200% by the weight of the dry dredged soil. Several series of unconfined compression tests, flow tests, and leaching tests were carried out. Experimental results for the TLS indicated that the unconfined compressive strength, secant modulus (), and unit weight of the TLS decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content. However, as the waste tire powder content increased, the stress-strain relationship of the TLS showed more ductile behavior rather than brittle behavior. The flow value increased with an increase in water content, but decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content. The result of the leaching test showed that the leaching amounts of heavy metals were lower than the permitted limits suggested by the Ministry of Environment.
Jeju-Do is a volcanic island of which climate is very warm and humid, but Opuntia lanceolata Haw, showing CAM metabolism is growing at Wolyung-Ri, Hanrim-Eup, Jeju-Do. Annual productivity of Opuntia was 696.47g/m2/yr and 533.47g/m2/yr at two populations on the seashore respectively and 414.92g/m2/yr on the basalt wall of a village. Stem area index was 13.74, 6.93, and 9.30 at each population which are higher values than average range of leaf area index. The standing crop was the highest at the second cladode from the cladode showed little difference at most chemical properties of P, K, Ca and Na. Total nitrogen contents were the most at the youngest cladode and the lest at the oldest one. Soils were infertile of which organic contents were 1.5% and 5.0% on the seaside and the basalt wall respectively. The soil on the basalt wall contained little water whose water contents were 0.9% and at seashore population 15.12% of water contents were. Furthermore high exchangeable Na contents in soil added waer deficiency.

Shear failure in soil is the primary cause of most geotechnical structure failures or instability. Soil water content is a significant factor affecting soil shear strength. In this study, the shear strength of samples with different water contents was tested. The shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle decreased with increasing water content. Based on the variation of cohesion and internal friction angle, the water content zone was divided into a high-water content zone and low-water content zone with a threshold water content of 15.05%. Cohesion and internal friction angle have a good linear relationship with water content in both zones. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) test presented that the aggregates size of the compacted loess gradually increases with increasing water content. Meanwhile, the clay in the compacted loess forms a matric that envelops around the surface of the aggregates and fills the inter-aggregates pores. A quantitative analysis of bound water and free water under different water contents using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test was carried out. The threshold water content between bound water and free water was slightly below the plastic limit, which is consistent with the results of shear strength parameters. Combined with the T2 distributions obtained by NMR, one can define a T2 relaxation time of 1.58 ms as the boundary point for bound water distribution without free water. Finally, the effects of bound water and free water on shear strength parameters were analyzed using linear regression analysis.
The objective of this study is to investigate the removal efficiency of volitile organic compounds in soil, and the mechanism of desorption by bench scale microwave heating, Silt soil used for experiment and was impregnated with toluene, tetrachloroethylene, o-xylene and p-dichlorobenzene and the microwave treatment was conducted in a modified domestic microwave oven : 2450MHz, 700W. According to the results of the research the removal efficiency was improved with increasing water contents and the soil temperature appeared to plateau period extending to 2-3minutes corresponds to the temperature a which steam distillation was expected. The value of removal rate constant (k) were calculated on dry and moisty silt soil, respectively, which showed linear with increasing microwave heating time. Therefore, addition of a certain amount of water to the contaminated soil can efficiently enhance the ability of the soil to absorb microwave energy and promote the evaporation of the volitile contaminants.
Water and soil properties in paddy fields subjected to organic and conventional farming were characterized over the rice cycle in South Korea. To achieve the goals of this study, we sampled and analyzed soil and water from 24 organic paddy plots and 11 conventional paddy plots in March, May, August, and October 2016. The results were analyzed using statistical analyses, including analysis of variance (ANOVA), cluster analysis, and principal component analysis. The ANOVA results showed that water content (WC), electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter (OM), and available phosphorus ($P_2O_5$) in soil varied significantly (p < 0.01) depending on the farming method. Higher OM, EC, and $P_2O_5$ of soil were observed in the conventional paddies than in the organic paddies. All soil properties, except pH and ammonium, depended on seasonal variation. Cluster analysis revealed that soil properties in May were distinctly separated from those in other seasons mainly due to basal fertilization. The principal component analysis distinguished the soil properties in different seasons, but such a distinction was not observed between the soil properties in organic and conventional paddies. Low contents of WC, OM, and total N were observed in March. High concentrations of nitrate and total P were observed in May, but these were low in August and October. The soils from October were also characterized by high concentrations of EC and $P_2O_5$. These results indicate that the sampling time for soil and water can significantly influence the evaluation of soil properties with different farming methods.
