There always exists uncertainty which is mainly due to uncertainty of the evaluation of a geotechnical structure at a site. The uncertainty in the geotechnical analysis can be considered in the probabilistic analysis using the Monte Carlo Simulation. It needs various soil profiles which could be possible at the target site. In this study, a new method is proposed to generate soil profiles which are probable at the site. The proposed method analyzes a structure of a site and generates one dimensional soil profiles for a probabilistic analysis. Through the field application, the applicability of the prosed method was shown.

To quantitatively estimate the effect of yellow sand(loess) fromt he Northern China, various soil sources having similar chemical compositions to yellow sands should be separated and identified. After that, mass contribution for yellow sand can be calculated. The study showed that it was impossible to solve this problem by the traditional bulk analyses. However, particle-by-particle analysis by a CCSEM (computer controlled scanning electron microscope) gave enormous potentials to solve it. To perform this study, seven soil source data analyzed by CCSEM were obtained from Texas, U.S.A. Initially, each soil date was classified into two groups, coarse and fine particle groups since the particle number distribution showed a minimum occurring at 5.2$\mu$m of aerodynamic diameter. Particles in each group were then classified into one of the 283 homogeneous particle classes by the universal classification rule which had been built by an expert system in the early study. Further, mass fractions and their uncertainties for each class in each source were calculated by the Jackknife method, and then source profile matrix for the 7 soil sources was created. To use the profile matrix in the study of source contribution, it is necessary to test the degree of collinearity among sources. The profiles were tested by the singular value decomposition method. As a result, each soil source characterized by artificially created variables was totally independent each other and is ready to use in source contribution studies as a receptor model.

It is becoming more important to utilize reclaimed lands in South Korea, due to the increasing competition for its usage among different sectors. However, the high groundwater level and poor permeability are exposing them to deterioration by salinization. Salinization is difficult to predict because the pattern changes according to various characteristics of soil and groundwater. In this study, the capillary rising time was studied by the water content profile in the soil. The prediction equation of soil salinity was developed based on simulation result of the CHEMFLO model. to enable prediction considering various soil water content and groundwater level. The two terms constituting the equation showed the coefficients of determination of 0.9816 and 0.9824, respectively. Using the prediction equation of the study, the surface salinity can be easily predicted from the initial surface salinity and the salinity of the groundwater. In the future, more precise predictions will be possible with the results of studies on the hydraulic characteristics of various reclaimed soils, changes in water content profile by seasonal and climate events.

The cyclic plate load test were peformed to determine the behavior of reinforced soft ground with multiple layers of geogrid. Five series of test were conducted with varying the soil profile conditions which including the ground level, type of soil, and the thickness of each soil layer. The plate load test equipment was slightly modified to apply the cyclic load. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the bearing capacity ratio(BCR), subbase modules, shear modules, the elastic rebound ratio, and reinforcing parameters are presented.
This paper presents a nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis approach, which can consider precisely characteristics of structures, complicated soil profiles and nonlinear characteristics of soil. Although many methods have been developed to deal with the soil-structure interaction effects in past years, most of them are nearly unpractical since it is difficult to model complicated characteristics of structure and soil precisely. The presented approach overcomes the difficulties by adopting an maligned mesh generation approach and multi-linear model. The applicability of the proposed approach is validated and the effects of complicated characteristics of structure and soil on soil-structure interaction are investigated through the numerical example by the proposed nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis approach.
The stiff top layer in a soil profile, which can happen in winter, may change the isolation effect of the wave barrier. The research scope of this paper is the investigation of the propagation of surface waves in layered soil with a stiff layer on its top, and the isolation effect of the solid stiff wave barrier. The investigations have been performed numerically by the Boundary-Element Method as a two-dimensional problem. A strip foundation vibrated harmonically in vertical direction was considered as the vibration source. Three soil profiles, a homogeneous half-space, two profiles with different thickness of stiff top layer, with two different types of wave barriers were investigated. The profiles with a stiff top layer show considerable reductions of the amplitude of the vibration in comparison to the homogeneous soil profile. The layered soil profiles with a stiff top layer do not show wave propagation velocities as high as they are expected from the material properties. Furthermore the vibration amplitudes in a frozen soil are much smaller with distance than in a non-frozen soil.

The precise analysis of soil-pile-structure interaction requires a proper description of soil layer, pile, and structure. In commonly used finite element simulations, mesh boundaries should match the material discontinuity line. However, in practice, the geometry of soil profiles and piles may be so complex that mesh alignment becomes a wasteful and difficult task. To overcome these difficulties, a different integration method is adopted in this paper, which enables easy integration over a regular element with material discontinuity regardless of the location of the discontinuity line. By applying this integration method, the mesh can be generated rapidly and in a highly structured manner, leading to a very regular stiffness matrix. The influence of the shape of the soil profile and piles on the response is examined, and the validity of the proposed soil-pile structure interaction analysis method is demonstrated through several examples. It is seen that the proposed analysis method can be easily used on soil-pile-structure interaction problems with complex interfaces between materials to produce reliable results regardless of the material discontinuity line.
Compaction is becoming a greater concern in crop production and the environment because it can have deleterious effects on growing conditions that are difficult to remediate. Because compaction can vary considerably from point to point within a field, and also from depth to depth within the soil profile, it is important to consider quantification and management of the spatial and vertical variability in soil compaction when developing an overall site-specific crop management plan. In this paper, the importance of soil compaction, techniques for quantification of its variability, and the concept of site-specific tillage are examined. Methods and systems to detect within-field variation in soil strength as a surrogate measure of soil compaction and related soil properties are also compared and discussed. Quantification of variability in soil compaction and site-specific compaction management was motivated recently, and sensors and control systems are still under development. Future study will need to address a number of issues related to understanding and applying the sensor measurements.

Vehicles and UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) need a variety of road informations, such as road profile, soil type and soil water contents, to run a cross country course. Especially, soil water contents are very important factor to judge the vehicle mobility, because it can change soil strength. This paper describes the real-time measuring method of soil water contents by using the soil thermal conductivity.
Geomorphological properties for the phylite-derived soil were examined to relate processes to four landscape positions, shoulder, backslope, footslope, and toeslope in Chungbuk. The distribution of Ogcheon-geology system was 216 thousand ha in South Korea. 2 orders, 3 suborders, 4 great groups, 5 subgroups, and 9 series were mapped. Soil color was interlocked by landscape. Soil color index values and $Fe_2O_3$ contents increased with soil-drainge class. Silt/clay and Ca/Mg ratios tended to narrow wish elevation and decreased with depth. Therefore, profile development or age on the landscape position was shoulder>backslope>footslope>toeslope. Color index(C2m) has a sighificant correlation with $Fe_2O_3$, in soil profile($r=0.777^{**}$). Pedologic type was continuity/discontinuity and soil property changes of depth<12cm would have a continous function.
