The first geophysical technique applied to the agricultural sector in Korea was electrical resistivity sounding and conducted in purpose of groundwater exploitation in the 1970s. According to the diversity of agricultural activities since the 1990s, various geophysical methods including electrical resistivity, electromagnetic induction, and self-potential method were applied to several agricultural fields such as soil characterization with saline concentration in vast reclaimed area, delineation of seawater intrusion regions in costal aquifer, safety inspection of embankment dikes with leakage problem, detection of ground subsidence from overpumping and tracing of groundwater aquifer contamination by leachate from livestock mortality burial or waste burial site. This paper introduces representative geophysical techniques that have been utilized in various agricultural fields and suggests several ways to develop the geophysical methods required for the precision agriculture field in the near future based on the past achievements.

This study was conducted to investigate the downward mobility of pesticides using soil colunms and to compare the experimental results with predicted values from Convective mobility test model. Five pesticides including ethoprophos, procymidone, iprobenfos, isoprothiolane, and butachlor were subjected to soil column leaching test for three types of cultivation soils. The concentrations of ethoprophos, iprobenfos, procymidone, isoprothiolane and butachlor leached from soil column of 30 cm depth ranged $0.74{\sim}3.61mg/mL,\;0.36{\sim}1.67mg/L,\;0.16{\sim}0.84mg/L,\;0.16{\sim}0.67mg/L$ and lower than 0.15 mg/L, respectively. Elution volume to reach the peak of ethoprophos, iprobenfos, procymidone, isoprothiolane and butachlor in the leachate ranged $2{\sim}4PV,\;3{\sim}10PV,\;5{\sim}13PV,\;4{\sim}14PV\;and\;19{\sim}61PV$, respectively. Convection times predicted by Convective mobility test model at standard conditions were $9{\sim}18$ days for ethoprophos, $17{\sim}35$ days for iprobenfos, $24{\sim}54$ days for isoprothiolane, $21{\sim}65$ days for procymidone and $105{\sim}279$ days for butachlor. Based on these convection times, ethoprophos was classified as mobile or most mobile, isoprothiolane and procymidone as moderately mobile or mobile and butachlor as slightly mobile. On the same conditions, convection times from the model were coincided with those from soil column test in most of the soil-pesticide combinations applied. Therefore, Convective mobility test model could be applied to predict convection times of pesticides.
The leaching behaviour of quinclorac was elucidated using soil columns. On top of each glass column packed with a rice paddy soil up to the 30 cm height were applied three different treatments of [$^{14}C$]quinclorac: quincloiac only (T-1), quinclorac adsorbed onto active carbon (T-2), and quinclorac adsorbed onto a mixture of active carbon and $Ca(OH)_{2}$ (T-3). Half of the columns were planted with rice plants for 17 weeks and half of them unplanted for comparison. Average amounts of $^{14}C$-activity percolated from tile soil columns without rice plants in T-1, T-2, and T-3 were 81.1%, 27.8% and 48.0%, respectively, of tile originally applied $^{14}C$, whereas those with rice plants grown were 36.8%, 9.6% and 11.0%, respectively, indicating that the leaching of [$^{14}C$]quinclorac was significantly affected by vegetation and by treatment with the adsorbents. The bioavailability of the herbicide to rice plants in T-1, T-2, and T-3 were 13.6%, 11.0% and 13.9%, respectively. The residue levels of quinclorac in the edible part of rice grains would be far less than the maximum residue limit (MRL, 0.5 ppm). After the leaching, the amounts of $^{14}C$ remaining in soil in with rice planting T-1, T-2, and T-3 were 36.3%, 73.7%, and 61.8%, whereas those without rice planting were 19.7%, 71.1%, and 52.3%, respectively. The balance sheets indicate that [$^{14}C$]quinclorac translocated to rice shoots would be lost by volatilization and/or in other ways in T-1 and T-3. The $^{14}C$-activity partitioned into the aqueous phase of the leachates collected from all treatments was less than 7% of the total, but it increased gradually with time in the case of rice growing, suggesting tile formation of some polar degradation products.

In Korea, over 4,700 animal carcass disposal sites were installed until 2011 due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Due to the putrefaction of buried animals, the leachate containing veterinary antibiotics may release into surrounding environments. Antibiotic residues in the environment cause the formation of antibiotic resistance bacteria threatening human and ecosystem health. This study reports the concentrations of five antibiotics, including tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), sulfamethazine (SMZ), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), in soils from animal carcass disposal site and adjacent agricultural field. Concentrations of antibiotics at animal carcass disposal sites (TC: $144.26-350.73{\mu}g/kg$, SMZ: $17.72-44.94{\mu}g/kg$) were higher than those at agricultural field (TC: $134.16-320.73{\mu}g/kg$, SMZ: $6.48-8.85{\mu}g/kg$) whereas the concentrations of CTC, OTC, and SMX were below detection limit in both sites. Results showed that the antibiotics in animal carcass site might leach to the soil and possibly contaminating the groundwater. Future studies will focus on the transfer of antibiotics residues into food crops.
As household and industrial wastes continue to rapidly increase every year, the demands for landfill sites are also increasing. However, the construction of landfill sites causes many problems due to the high costs of liners, while the leachate from the landfills generates secondary contamination of surrounding lands and groundwater. The purpose of this study is to determine the proper mixing ratio to meet the liner conditions (must be less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$), using the local soil as the main material and using fly ash, bentonite, and cement as the mixing materials. The possibility of using this mixture as the liner for landfill sites was examined. To determine the proper mixing ratio, this study conducted basic physical properties tests, compaction tests, consolidation tests, and uniaxial compression tests. It was found that the higher the ratio of bentonite, the lower the coefficient of permeability, and the higher the ratio of fly ash, the higher the coefficient of permeability. The reason for this is that, while bentonite expands and fills pores, fly ash cannot fill the pores because the particles have a round shape and do not have adhesion. In conclusion, the optimum coefficient of permeability that meets the landfill liner condition was obtained when the ratio of bentonite was 15% or higher. If fly ash was mixed, the landfill liner condition was met when the ratio of bentonite was 15% or higher and the ratio of fly ash was 20% or lower.
Recently, many landfills are constructed by using geosynthetics with earth materials. Geotextiles in geosynthetics are applied for the various purposes such as filters of the leachate collection and removal system and protectors of geomembrane liner. However geotextiles can be exposed to direct sunlight during the construction of landfill for several months. As you know the exposure of polymers to sunlight can be a major source of degradation of them. This study is to suggest a criteria on the installation of heavy weight geotextiles at the landfill. For this purpose, several different geotextiles were evaluated by outdoor exposure at two different locations and under the different seasons for one and half years. As the results of outdoor exposure, polypropylene geotextiles with 500g/$m^2$ and 700g/$\textrm{m}^2$were maintained around 40% of the initial strength during for one and half years. However, the polypropylene geotextile of 1000g/$\textrm{m}^2$showed 65% of the retained strength for the same duration of exposure. The retained strength of all polypropylene geotextile reduced dramatically with the cumulative sunshine radiation on a horizontal surface of around 1500MJ/$\textrm{m}^2$.

The aims of this study is to improve physical properties of the sewage sludge and the process sludge generated in the leachate treatment by mixing the dry fuel, to develop the neutral solidifing agents that reduce oder, and to recycle the sewage and the process sludges as landfill cover materials. The mixing ratio (W/W) of sludges and dry fuel was appropriate at about 1:1, and the mixed materials were shown to be homogeneous at that ratio. We could know that when the sludges were mixed with dry fuel, moisture contents and viscosities are reduced, and air passages are formed between particles and particles. The various mixing tests and odor tests showed that the neutral solidifing agent was effective for the odor reduction. The main ingredient of the solidifing agent is the ash of sewage sludge, enabling it competitive in waste recycling and production costs. The landfill cover, using developed neutral solidification agent, improved physical properties to satisfy the quality standards and to increase the compressive strength. It also proved to reduce the value of complex oder and the usage of solidification agent to 1/3 (3,000 to 1,000) and to 1/8 (50% to 6%), respectively, from the comparative study with alkaline solidified landfill cover. Further research is under way to prove that this can be mixed with general soil to be used as a soil improvement agent for plant cultivation.
The compatibility of chemicals in the leachates with the three natural and artificially -made liner materials is analyzed by performing the laboratory hydraulic conductivity test. The selected liner materials are natural marine clay, fly ash and weathered granitic soil stomped from Kimpo Wastefills, Seochon power plant and Mansu Dong, Inchon, respectivaly. Bentonites of 20 and 10 percent by weight are used as additive materials for fly ash and weathered granitic soil and the chemical solutions used in the test are acetic acid, methanol, heptane, and aniline which are frequently found in the leachate of waste fills. The concentrations of the chemical solutions are 100% and 75%. The results of the tests show that hydraulic conductivities of the oxter materials are increased by one or two orders of magnitude with permeating pure chemical solutions. The rate of hydraulic conductivity increase is lowest for Seochon fly ash admixed liner and highest for natural marine clay liner. The influence of hydraulic chemical solutions on the liner materials is least for acetic acid and largest for aniline. The increases of conductivity are not shown with the permeation of the solution of concentration 75%. At least by this test results, it can be recognized that the tested liner material can be quite stable with the solutions of significantly high concentration except pure solutions.
Sorption of the aqueous cyanide onto steel mill sludge and steel mill slag, both of which are the by-products from the converter furnace, was studied. In the study, the influence of temperature, activation energy, concentration and pH on sorption of cyanide was investigated. Three different temperature($25^{\circ}C$ > $37^{\circ}C$> $50^{\circ}C$) was chosen to represent that of landfill leachate. Initial concentration was 1 mg/$\ell$ 5 mg/$\ell$, 10 mg/$\ell$, and 20 mg/$\ell$. In addition, pH was set to three different level, that is, 3, 7, and 11 respectively. As the result of batch mode experiment for cyanide adsorption, the removal rate was found to be proportional to the initial concentration of cyanide. The order of removal rate was 20 mg/$\ell$> 10 mg/$\ell$> 5 mg/$\ell$> 1 mg/$\ell$. Similarly the influence of pH was proportional because of the change in solubility of cyanide. The order of removal rate was pH 11 > pH 7 > pH 3. As the temperature increased, so did the removal rate. The reaction was endothermic and the value of activation energy(Ea) was 127.93 J/mole and 59.44 J/mole respectively at 1 mg/ιand 20 mg/ιof initial concentration. From the experiment, it can be postulated that the capability of steel mill by-products to attenuate aqueous cyanide is enough to be used as substitute for clay liner of landfill site in the aspect of pollutant removal.

Oil leaked from underwound storage tanks and leachate from sanitary landfills have been known as contaminant sources of the high-quality groundwater resources. The mobility of contaminants in the aquifer largely depends on the groundwater flow and the determination of associated hydraulic parameters is essential for a proper remediation of contaminated grnundwater. This study aimed at determining an optimum set of hydraulic parameters for an unconfined sandy aquifer of a laboratory scale through comparison of various methods. Results showed that the specific yield obtained from gravity drainage experiment was an average of 0.20 with minor variations in aquifer depths. and the permeabilities obtained from Dupuit approximation and slug test gave similar values of 5.33 cm/min and 5.85 cm/min but the constant head method gave 0.17 cm/min, which is much ion than the other methods. This experimental evidence reveals that the permeability of the unconfined sandy aquifer could be accurately determined by Dupuit assumption or slug tut rather than by constant head method conducted for a disturbed separate soil column.
